We all know that full-size trucks have always been on top of the demand charts, but the mid-size truck segment has been gaining momentum steadily over the past decade. Chevrolet is one of the biggest players in both the segment and the Colorado pickup truck is their midsize segment entire. The Colorado has a starting price of $21,300 and comes with plenty of available options.

The 2019 Colorado Crew Cab comes with three engine options, two drivetrain options, and two cargo-bed options. The Colorado Crew Cab faces a lot of coemption in the mid-size truck segment. The biggest rivals to the Colorado are the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and the Colorado’s corporate sibling the GMC Canyon

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Pricing and Features

7.7/10

The 2019 Colorado is available in four trim levels- Work Truck (WT), LT, Z71, and ZR2. It also comes with three engine options a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter, and a Turbodiesel 2.8-liter inline-4. The base trim is quite well-equipped considering its price and offers air conditioning, vinyl upholstery and floor covering, a four-way power driver's seat with manual recline, front bucket seats, a tilt-only adjustable steering wheel, and power windows. You also get a rearview camera, a 7-inch infotainment system, and a six-speaker sound system. The LT trims build upon the WT trim and further offer 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, OnStar, and additional USB ports. The top-end ZR2 trim is strictly for those who seek some serious off-roading along with the utility of a pickup truck. The features on offer in the trim are a raised suspension with special dampers, bigger all-terrain tires, fender flares, special bodywork for improved off-roading capability, a spray-in bed liner, and an electronically locking rear differential.

We recommend.

We would recommend the Colorado LT with the Crew Cab configuration. It also adds the option for a 3.6-liter V-6, and AWD. It comes with seating for five along with quick acceleration and excellent towing power-up to 7600 pounds. The LT comes at a low price and with all the engine options, so you can customize it according to your need and it is also fitted with most of the comfort and convenience features that Colorado has to offer.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Engine and Performance

7.3/10

You can choose from the three-engine option that Chevrolet has to offer. The base engine is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit churning out 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The motor is powerful enough for day-to-day driving but if you want your Colorado to tow and haul more weight then you will need to opt for the powerful engine-equipped trims.

Colorado also comes with a 3.6-liter V-6 that puts out 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque and is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The eight-speed gearbox feels much smoother and the engine feels relaxed while towing maximum capacity. Chevy also provides an optional 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine that is good enough, to say the least for regular towing and hauling. It produces 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Colorado Crew Cab comes with one of the best towing capacities on the list. However, this base 2.5-liter engine does not have any towing potential unless you opt for optional trailering packages. Nonetheless, if you opt for the diesel of the V6 you get the best towing capacity in the segment. The Colorado’s corporate sibling the GMC Canyon which uses the same engine also offers the same towing capacity. The Nissan Frontier is the most powerful truck on the list but still falls short in terms of maximum trailering capacity.

Acceleration

The engine of the Chevy Colorado is mated with a six-speed transmission which helps it sprint to 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds which is one of the best in the class. However, the V-6 engine in Colorado makes it feel light and full of power and hits 0-60 in an awesome 6.7-seconds.

The best in the class is the Nissan Frontier which is not surprising because it has the most powerful engine in the class. The Colorado comes in a clear second place and rounding off the podium is Chevy's cousin the GMC.

Ride and Handling

Trucks are not known for their ride and comfort and the Colorado is no exception. However, compared to the other trucks in the segment the Colorado offer a better ride. As for the handling, the Colorado behaves like any other body on frame trucks in the segment. The truck feels heavy through the corners, and the suspension has to work double-time to keep traction.

Top-of-the-line ZR2 trim is special in its own way and it comes with some serious off-roading package and a Multimatic DSSV damping system. The damping systems are extremely quick to react to any kind of suspension movement making the ZR2 a serious off-roader that a die-hard adventurer will definitely appreciate.

Braking and Handling

Colorado come with 12.2-inch rotors at the front and 12.8-inch rotor at the rear. Compared to the Japanese trucks the Colorado and its cousin have a larger rotor. However, that does not translate to the braking performance.

Brake pedals feel stiff while hard braking, however, it performs well under normal driving conditions. Colorado stops from 60 mph in 124 feet which is good, whereas Toyota Tacoma leads the pack with the best stopping distance.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder gets the best mileage as it earns an EPA rating of 22 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is exceptional for a compact pickup truck. The base engine, when compared with the competitors, does not feel left out either. Its estimated EPA ratings are 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined which is the best in the class. The V-6 motor has the lowest fuel economy rating of 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Interior

7.8/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado comes with zero changes and the interior still gives the feel of a full-size truck. There are hard plastics inside which you otherwise would expect in a truck, however, the cabin noise is minimal, and you will feel comfortable. The front seats are spacious, and the rear seats can easily accommodate three adults. The Colorado comes with two-bed lengths (6.2 feet and 5.1 feet) and various standard and available tech features.

The 2019 Chevy truck flaunts the most spacious cabin in its class. There are two seating options to select from - the extended cab models offer four seats while the crew cab comes with five seats. The rear seats in the extended cab are too tight and you would not love to spend too much time there. So, if you are someone who often goes out on family trips then opt for the Crew cab. The driving position is upright and comfortable with all the controls within reach. The front seats and steering can be adjusted according to your comfort. Some interior features include:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats.
  • Power-adjustable passenger seat

Infotainment

The Chevrolet Colorado, being a pick-up truck, also ensures that you remain connected at all times. The Mylink infotainment touch screen system, although feels sluggish to respond, packs in quite some features for everyday use. You get the 7-inch touchscreen in the base model and an optional 8-inch screen is available in the LT model and higher. Other infotainment features include:

  • Bluetooth streaming
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Two USB ports front and two optional in the back
  • Bose sound system

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior

7.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado definitely attracts you as a compact pick-up truck, but it does not look as bold for a truck as its rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma. Its swoopy styling is for functionality rather than form. The truck has a distinct rugged feel to its design with the black inserts in the front fascia including the front grille and the front bumper. Increased wheel arches, modified bumpers, and a hood scoop is additional on the ZR2 and is not just there for visual appearance but are fully functional as well.

At the front, there is wide headlight with a big chrome grille. You get a massive taillight and a rear bumper at the back. The base trim and WT trims look practical while the monochrome finish and alloy wheels on the LT trim are worth the money. Z71 feels sturdy but the Colorado ZR2 with its high stance and better ground clearance makes you feel more planted. The ZR2 exterior feature includes:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • A bed-mounted spare-tire carrier
  • 2.0-inch lift that lifts 31-inch off-road tires.
  • Front and rear locking differential for standard AWD

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Safety

2.0/10

The 2019 Colorado gets the GM's Tee Driver system as standard which allows the parent to monitor the speed a location of the truck, also mute the radio till all the passengers have put their seatbelts on. What comes as a tricky decision is that the LT model gets lane departure warning and forward collision warning as optional which is not available for the higher trim Z71.

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • All-speed traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • 6 airbags
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Competition

7.5/10

Chevrolet Colorado Vs Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma can handle any terrain with ease and is the most capable off-roader in the class. As we have discussed earlier that the Colorado did not impress with the safety features whereas the Tacoma offers great safety scores with added features like Siri Eyes Free and GoPro camera mount. However, Chevy inches ahead of the Toyota when it comes to interior comfort and rear space and is also available at $4,000 less. If you are looking for a serious off-roader go with the Tacoma otherwise, Colorado is a great value for money.

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma

Chevrolet Colorado Vs GMC Canyon

Engines same, towing capacity almost identical, pricing - not much difference, so what is the major difference between the two cousins? It is the cabin quality, Colorado's interior is value for money, but Canyon offers more refinement and plush design, especially in the Denali trim. So, it is up to you to decide which of these pick-up trucks you want.

The 2019 GMC Canyon

Chevrolet Colorado Vs Nissan Frontier

Nissan Frontier feels outdated and outclassed in many areas when compared to its rivals. There are no modern engine options and it also lacks the latest safety assist which is found on the Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and the GMC Canyon. The Frontier is also the shortest of the lot, so space is also a concern. However, its towing and payload capacity is impressive, and it outclasses the Tacoma and Canyon in carrying weight. Being the cheapest in class it can sure be a good choice considering its strength.

The 2019 Nissan Frontier

2019 Chevrolet Colorado Final Verdict

8.5/10

The Chevrolet Colorado has always been quite an appealing mid-size truck and provides superb utility as well. It goes up against some of the well-established competitors in the segment and holds its ground with its potent engine options and a feature-rich cabin right from its base trim level. The truck is also quite aggressively priced and offers a lot for the price tag it carries.

Chevrolet Colorado

Pros - Efficient engine, capable off-roader and good towing capacity

Cons - Cabin lacks space and annoying telescoping steering

more efficient and practical The off-road capability of the vehicle was far more efficient and practical compared to the rivals. The ground clearence was very practical which can take up the challenging roads. The suspension travel was very appreciable and good towing capabilities made this a best choice in the market.

Tacoma is better

Pros - Holds its value, has good power

Cons - Headlights, uncomfortable, noisy

Go get a Toyota In my opinion and from my experience, I think Tacoma is a better deal than Colorado in almost every aspect. It looks better than it drives is what Colorado is. Chevy has put in a lot of energy for it to look the part, but driving dynamics may have slipped out of their minds designing it. The transmission is the biggest disappointment, it struggles to change gears, doesn’t work on highways. It seems confused whether to upshift or downshift. Don’t know how Chevrolet didn’t notice a big issue like this. The staff at Lake Chevrolet are friendly and courteous. On top of that, they got me a pretty good deal too. We negotiated a bit and came to an agreement pretty quickly. Very pleased with the deal I got and with the vehicle I got.

Pros - Long bed, sturdy built, amazing suspension for off roading on this truck

Cons - Cabin space is bit less for tall people

for adventure sport and work it's a good buy Very attractive exterior and interior design. Tech features are up-to-date and extremely user friendly. Spacious enough for a family of 3 plus a large dog. Leather-wrapped seats are a big plus, and the cargo box fits most items needed to be hauled. Couldn’t be more satisfied or ask for more in a mid-size pickup! Knew what I wanted and I got just that. Was quick and easy. Thanks Andy and everyone at Performance.
