The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid size pick up truck that comes with an unbeatbale combo of engines. The three engine options for the Colorado are a base 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder which is mated to a six-speed manual, a 308-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 which is remarkably fast and a turbo-diesel 2.8-liter inline-4 with a class-leading towing rate and fuel efficiency.

You might overlook the Colorado for its poor-quality interior and limited safety tech. However, it is a truck that offers a lot and is capable of doing all sorts of jobs with a starting price of $21,195 for the base model and going all the way up till $41,395 for the top trim.

My lifestyle truck!

Pros - Strong engine. Drives like a car. Rugged reliability.

Cons - Sluggish gearshifts. Not so quick.

A great option for a mid-size family truck! Honestly speaking I got the Colorado after being tired of owning my SUVs. I traded this off for my 2008 Trailblazer for a good deal. The Colorado packs the practicality of a SUV still and yet drives like a car. The crew cab is quite comfortable for my family to accompany. I have numerous memories of driving the Colorado for fishing and camping trails. Never has the truck caused an issue or broken down in the middle of the truck. The annual maintenance on the truck is also quite nominal. This was the first time I had a bitter experience while a new car buy. The sales showroom didn't have the trim that I wanted for a test drive and asked me to come two days later. Even after two days, I couldn't catch a glimpse of the ZR1. I went ahead with the purchase anyway and had the car delivered a day late again. They offered complimentary wax detailing to compensate for the delay!

Work truck.

Pros - Functional and long rear bed, ride comfort, livable cabin

Cons - Low fuel efficiency, city manouverability

A work truck done right! Probably the name gives it all. A low spec work truck with no exterior bling whatsoever. But I must say the interiors are well appointed and is very comfortable. You get all basic amenities including a touchdcreen infotainment system with integrated rear backup camera. The rears are too perfectly usable but do not get dedicated AC vents. That said, the seats do get a lot of stain very easily; something not very promising for a work truck. The bed is very long and fits in almost anything, but does not have any covering.Basically more than anything you could ask for in a basic work truck. Lena was such a help throughout. She took me through the inventory just to show the features and gave me a good deal on the work truck.

Crosstrek Crossover

Pros - "Powerful, fuel-efficient diesel engine available Outstanding towing and payload capacities"

Cons - Lower crash test ratings than rivals

long lasting truck It's both sporty and elegantly styled. Also spacious and opulent. Both cost-effective and long-lasting. It's a real truck, and it's surely eye-catching. My Chevy Colorado is one of my favorite vehicles. The styling and design, the quality of the materials on the interior. The overall ride and handing are nice too. David Lewis comes highly recommended from me! Extremely polite and useful! I will continue to purchase my cars from Bobby Layman!! The service was excellent and prompt. I went in looking for a decent used truck and came out with a brand new one for less than half the price!!! I'm overjoyed, and I'm looking forward to having a new car for my son Phil for Christmas!! I will strongly advise purchasing from Bobby Layman Chevrolet and the many people I encountered during my stay.

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pick-up truck placed just below the Silverado. It carries over all the important cues from its big brother - whether it be refinement, ruggedness or performance. It does play a lot of roles in one - as a cargo hauler, a daily commuter and is very much capable to take on anything that's off-road.

A total of five trims are offered in the Colorado with the top trims Z71 and ZR2 especially suited for off-roading. There are two cabs and two cargo bed lengths to choose from. All the Extended Cab Colorados come with a 6-foot-2-inch bed, while Crew Cabs can be equipped with either a standard 5-foot-1-inch bed or a 6-foot-2-inch bed option. And that's what we drive here.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Pricing and Features

8.5/10

The mid-size pickup truck Colorado is available in five trims. But before you choose one you must decide which configuration you want to go with as it is offered in two body styles - Extended Cab and Crew Cab along with two-bed lengths- 6 feet 2 inch and 5 feet 1 inch. The five trims offered are Base, Work Truck (WT), LT, Z71, and ZR2.

In the three engine options, you get a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine which is standard on all the Extended Cab versions except the ZR2, which comes standard with 3.6-liter V-6 with a choice of 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. The 3.6-liter V-6 with 8-speed automatic is the only option with the Crew Cab configuration. There is also a turbo diesel 2.8-liter inline-4 which is optional on all but the base trim.

We recommend

We would recommend the Colorado LT with crew cab, 3.6-liter V-6, and AWD. It comes with seating for five along with quick acceleration and excellent towing power-up to 7000 pounds. The LT comes at a low price and with all the engine options, so you can customize it according to your need and it is also fitted with most of the comfort and convenience features that the Colorado has to offer.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Engine and Performance

8.1/10

You can choose from three engine options that the Chevy has to offer. The base engine is 2.5-liter 4-cylinder churning out 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission; however, a six-speed automatic is optional. Engine power is enough for day-to-day driving but if you want your Colorado to tow and haul then you will need to look for something more powerful.

And that would be the 3.6-liter V-6 that puts out 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. It is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevy has also provided an optional 2.8-liter turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine that is good enough, to say the least for regular towing and hauling. It produces 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The GM-exclusive Duramax 2.8-liter turbo diesel available for the Chevy Colorado is quiet, smooth and refined. It comes with outstanding power delivery and the roaring diesel soundtrack will keep reminding you about the power under the hood. However, the V-6 mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission is more capable of satisfying your power needs. Both the engines feel responsive and easily maneuverable whether you are in the city or taking on rocky terrain.

Acceleration

The powerful engine of the Chevy Colorado with six-speed transmission helps it sprint to 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds being light which is best in the class. The V-6 engine in Colorado makes it feel light and full of power and hits 0-60 in 6.7-seconds. Although the base engine is good enough, it really starts to feel out of breath when you start pushing it.

The Chevy gets competition from Toyota Tacoma which is slow initially but picks up speed later to complete a quarter mile in 14.7 seconds as compared to Colorado's 16.2 seconds. The GMC Canyon on the other hand, is much slower, reaching 60mph in 9.1 seconds.

Braking and Handling

The Colorado feels confident on corners as the strong suspension keeps the body roll in check. You will feel the light rear end breaking traction when the bed is unloaded, but stability control keeps that in check as well. Colorado also maintains its steady speed while climbing the hills. Electric power steering feels light, allowing the truck to maneuver smoothly around town or on highways.

The Colorado stops from 60 mph in 124 feet which is good, whereas Toyota Tacoma leads the pack with the best stopping distance. Following Tacoma is the GMC Canyon at 121 ft. and Chevrolet takes the most distance with 124 ft while the Nissan Frontier is the last one in the list.

Towing Capacity

If towing is the need of the hour for you then go for the GM-exclusive Duramax 2.8-liter engine with a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. It offers best-in-class towing power and torque, making the Chevy Colorado America's most fuel-efficient pick-up truck. Equip the Colorado with a V-6 and you get towing capacity of 7,000 pounds, but the base engine cuts the towing capacity to almost half (3,500).

WE can also observe how the Colorado has the best towing and payload capacities in its segment.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy

7.6/10

The 2.8-liter turbo-diesel 4-cylinder gets the best fuel efficiency as it earns an EPA rating of 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is exceptional for a compact pickup truck. This puts the Colorado on the map for being one of the most frugal trucks around.

The down performer is the V-6 which has the worst EPA rating of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Interior

6.7/10

The Chevy Colorado comes with zero changes and the interior still gives the feel of a full-size truck. There are hard plastics inside which you would expect in a truck, however the cabin noise is minimal and one feels comfortable. Front seats are spacious and the rear seats can easily accommodate three adults. The Colorado comes with two-bed lengths (6.2 feet and 5.1 feet) and various standard and available tech features.

The 2017 Chevy truck has the most spacious cabin in its class. There are two seating options to select from - the Extended Cab models offer four seats while the Crew Cab comes with five seats. The rear seats in the extended cab are too tight and you would not love to spend too much time there. So, if you are someone who often goes out on family trips then opt for the Crew cab. The driving position is upright and comfortable with all the controls within reach. Front seats and steering can be adjusted according to you comfort. Other seating options include:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable passenger seat

Infotainment Features

The Chevy Colorado is a pick-up truck that also makes you feel connected. It boasts segment-first 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and two touchscreens. The MyLink infotainment touch screen although crisp feels sluggish to respond. You get the 7-inch touchscreen in the base model and an optional 8-inch screen is available in LT model and higher. Other infotainment features include:

  • Bluetooth streaming
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Two USB ports front and two optional in the back
  • Bose sound system

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior

8.1/10

At the front, there is wide headlight with a big chrome grille. You get a massive taillight and a rear bumper at the back. The base trim and WT trims look practical while the monochrome finish and alloy wheels on the LT trim are worth the money. Z71 feels sturdy but the Colorado ZR2 with its high stance and better ground clearance makes you feel more planted.

The Colorado definitely attracts you as a compact pick-up truck but it does not look as bold for a truck as the Toyota Tacoma. Its swoopy styling is for functionality rather than form. Increased wheel arches, modified bumpers and a hood scoop on the ZR2 is not just there for visual appearance for they are all functional. The  exterior features include:

  • 17-inch wheels
  • A bed-mounted spare-tire carrier
  • 2.0-inch lift that lifts 31-inch off-road tires
  • Front and rear locking differential for standard AWD

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Safety

7.0/10

There is no reason to be worried if you are inside the Colorado as it has performed well in the NHSTA crash rating with an overall rating of four-stars. However, it lacks advanced collision avoidance tech which is common in a large number of cars these days. The IIHS has also rated its headlight as poor and front crash prevention as basic.

The Colorado gets the GM's Teen Driver system as standard which allows the parent to monitor the speed and location of the truck, and also mute the radio till all the passengers have put their seatbelts on. What comes as a tricky decision is that the LT model gets lane departure warning and forward collision warning as optional which is not available for the higher,  Z71 trim. Few safety features include:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • All-speed traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • 6 airbags
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Competition

7.8/10

Chevrolet Colorado Vs Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma can handle any terrain with ease and is the most capable off-roader in the class. As we have discussed earlier, the Colorado did not impress with the safety features whereas the Tacoma offers great safety scores with added features. However, Chevy inches ahead of the Toyota when it comes to interior comfort and rear space and is also available at $4,000 lesser. If you are looking for a serious off-roader go with the Tacoma, otherwise Colorado is great value for money.

Chevrolet Colorado Vs GMC Canyon

Engines being same, towing capacity remaining almost identical, pricing not being very different, the major difference between the two cousins being cabin quality, the choice is down to luxury preference only. The Colorado's interior is value for money but the Canyon offers more refinement and plush design, especially in the Denali trim. So, it is up to you to decide which of these pick-up trucks you want.

Chevrolet Colorado Vs Nissan Frontier

Nissan Frontier feels outdated and outclassed in many areas when compared to its rivals. There are no modern engine options and it also lacks the latest safety assist which is found on the Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma and the GMC Canyon. The Frontier is also the shortest of the lot so space is also a concern. However, its towing and payload capacities are impressive and it outclasses the Tacoma and Canyon in carrying weight. Being the cheapest in class it can sure be a good choice considering its strength.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is an excellent pick-up truck. For a mid-size pickup it offers smooth ride quality and is well equipped. It may be not the best off-roader but ist towing and hauling capacity is second to none in the class. Although most buyers are obsessed with the full-size pickup trucks in America, pick-ups like the Colorado definitely gives the big haulers a run for their money. The cars are practical while being much more effficient and cheap.
