Colorado's throttle positioning sensor

Pros - Hauling?

Cons - Faulty throttle positioning sensor, stalls, overheating issues

9 years in and our Colorado is showing signs of grey hair My Colorado has been in the family for 9 years now and hasn't been what I can call an ideal pick up by any means. Starting with the throttle sensor issues, stalling, lack of power to make it up on the steeper gradients and poor mpg of course. Used to tow well until these issues. Had to replace the throttle sensor which cleared the stalling issue only to make way for overheating. Now I have a truck that only drives on flat roads and can't drive on slopes or hilly areas and doesn't have enough to pull a trailer. We had bought it from Salt lake valley chevrolet and as I remember, they did give us a significant discount on it. Over the years, things went pretty good with them and whenever I'd take it to have repaired or serviced, they'd do everything with minimal cost. Everything however has changed now and looking at the issues it has started to develop, I've been told by Todd to trade it in for another pickup. I think I might as well go with the advice.

A good mid-size truck

Pros - Beast like looks, great suspension, 2 locking differentials

Cons - No LED

An okay-ish kind of car for the price. I have owned my truck for two years and have not had to do any major repairs to it. Has 85,000 miles on it and still runs strong. I do a lot of driving for work so its reassuring to know that i have a reliable truck to get me around. Jeff is great I have purchased two cars from him. I love this dealership and will be returning when I purchase my next car. Jeff thank you for always answering my questions even if its not about cars.

well-rounded midsize truck

Pros - Impressive off-road technology, standard driver safety assists,

Cons - Lack some high-end features

One of the best functional trucks around. This truck is the best value on the market today. I have been averaging close to 22 mpg on the highway with the 2.9 ltr engine.. 16.5 mpg on local driving. This truck is cheaper to insure due to the service that GM gives the buyer for the 1st 6 months. Had this truck for over a year. I do not have any regrets. Everyone was very friendly. Sal was great in sales.Absolutely no pressure or fast talking.

Overall Rating

Priced at $24,285 for its base variant, the Chevrolet Colorado seems curated to cater to buyer’s needs. However, it is blotched with problems. Colorado’s cabin feels lackluster, and its design feels outmoded and old-fangled. In its segment, the Chevrolet Colorado competes head-on with the likes of the GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier.

We Recommend

We recommend buying the 3LT trim of the Chevrolet Colorado available as a rear-wheel-drive variant. The advantage of buying the 3LT is the availability of all features with the other two trims. It also features a potent V8 engine that delivers impeccable performance. However, if you’re looking for more refined ride quality, the four-wheel-drive variant of the 2LT could be your ideal pick.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The Chevrolet Colorado is available with three different engine options. With the rear-wheel-drive option of the base variant, the Colorado comes equipped with a 2.9L inline-4 engine good for producing 185 hp of power and 190 lb.-ft of torque. Available as standard with the four-wheel-drive variant of 1LT and both trims of the 2LT is a 3.7L inline-5 engine which can churn 242 hp of engine power and 242 lb.-ft of torque.

The third option on offer is available with the 3LT trim and is a 5.3L V8 engine. The V8 engine is potent in its performance and is capable of producing 300 hp and 320 lb.-ft. As standard, all trims of the Colorado come attached to a 6-speed automatic transmission. While the base two trims give an option of both AWD and RWD, the top-end 3LT only comes in an RWD setup.

In comparison, the GMC Canyon is based on the structure of the Chevrolet Colorado. The least expensive Nissan Frontier is the most distinctive truck in the segment. It makes use of a V6 engine and gets connected to a 5-speed automatic transmission and offers the most power and torque in the competition. While figures for the trucks are not known, each of them is revered for their performance, making it a competitive segment.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy

7.5/10

The Chevrolet Colorado’s efficiency is rated at 16 and 21 MPG in the city and on the highway, respectively. Combined, it is capable of 18 miles per gallon of fuel. Its fuel tank has a total capacity of 19-gallons and can cover a total distance of 304 miles in the city and 399 miles on the highway.

In comparison, the similarities between the Colorado and Canyon also extend to its fuel efficiency. The Nissan Frontier is the least efficient truck in the segment averaging a combined mileage of 16 miles per gallon of fuel. In terms of fuel capacity, the Nissan Frontier sports the largest fuel tank, which allows it to cover a competitive range in comparison.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Interior

7.0/10

The Chevrolet Colorado’s consistent performance does hit a low, credits to its lackluster cabin, which fails to hold the occupant’s attention. The lack of modernity and freshness inside the cabin feels irksome and may lead to traditional buyers in the segment opting for other alternatives. Irrespective of its make, the Colorado features an infotainment system that sits centrally, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a central console that sports a storage bin and front and rear cupholders.

What does come as a sigh of relief, however, is that the seats are comfortable. There is ample space both for the front and rear passengers. The ride quality is decent, with a good steering and transmission setup. The towing capacity of 6,000 lbs is one of the highest on offer, which makes a convincing case in its favor.

In comparison, the GMC Canyon has similar space for both front and rear-seat passengers. The Nissan Frontier has the lowest space for rear-seat passengers. In terms of towing capacity, the Frontier leads the pack with a total capacity of 6,100 lbs, while the Canyon lurks at the bottom of the table at 5,500 lbs. Some standout interior features include:

  •       Power Convenience Package
  •       Cruise Control
  •       Front and Rear Cupholders
  •       Cargo Area Light
  •       Rear Floor Mats
  •       Heated Mirrors

How intuitive is the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the Chevrolet Colorado is not the best in the segment. It comes equipped with the OnStar software and Bluetooth connectivity. The system gets connected to a 6-speaker sound system.  Many other tech features come standard with the pickup like radio data system, satellite radio, and more. Some basic infotainment features include-

  •         Satellite Radio
  •         Radio Data System
  •         Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  •         Mast Antenna
  •         MP3 Player
  •         CD Player

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior

7.0/10

The Chevrolet Colorado is idiosyncratic in its design and build. The aging design may not sit well in a segment that is rapidly making progressions. The front lights, though large and imposing, feel a bit complicated in design, however, they merge seamlessly with the chrome stripe that runs through the front grille.

At the rear end, the cargo bed measures 5 feet and is commodious, while the taillights are the highlight of the design. The Chevrolet Colorado is 207.1 inches long and sports a wheelbase of 126 inches. It is 67.6 inches wide and has a total height of 65.2 inches. Its clearance from the ground of 7.7 inches is the lowest in the segment, while it is also the lightest truck in the segment weighing 3,728 lbs.

In comparison, the GMC Canyon is similar to the Colorado in length and wheelbase. However, it is marginally taller and wider with a ground clearance of 10.4 inches. On the other hand, the Nissan Frontier is 72.8 inches wide and 70.1 inches tall, making it the widest and tallest truck in the segment. In terms of curb weight, the Nissan Frontier is the heaviest in the segment weighing 4,409 lbs, while the Canyon is relatively light at 4,070 lbs. Some exterior features of the Chevrolet Colorado include:

  •         Roof Rails
  •         Front License Plate Bracket
  •         Trailering Equipment
  •         Sliding Rear Window

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Safety

5.0/10

The Chevrolet Colorado may not be the safest truck in the segment. Its varying ratings of ‘Good’ and ‘Acceptable’ in the crash-tests conducted by the IIHS may not be the desirable rating, but it has standard safety features like traction control, engine immobilizer, and a post-collision safety system. While the base model makes use of front and rear drum brakes, higher trims make use of disc brakes. Some other safety specifications include:

  •         Electronic Stability Control
  •         Child Safety Locks
  •         Tire-Pressure Monitoring System
  •         Anti-Theft Alarm System
  •         Traction Control
  •         Daytime Running Lights

2012 Chevrolet Colorado Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Colorado has been a constant feature in the pickup truck segment and is revered for the multiple options on offer. It comes with three engine options and a standard transmission that together bestow upon its seemingly well performance. However, the Colorado’s ascendancy over its competitors starts to fade too soon and too quickly. It loses out on the grounds of its cabin’s disappointing build, and even its exterior design feels like a letdown. The infotainment features feel inadequate, and its safety scores are also underwhelming. While the Colorado may look like a viable and efficient option at first glance, we would recommend looking out for other trucks in the segment for more all-around and effective performance.
