Chevrolet hasn’t really been known to update its entry-level pickup truck for years at a stretch as its previous compact truck continued to be on sale for over a decade. Similarly, the Colorado is now into its eighth year of production and yet again Chevrolet has decided to let the Colorado march along with all its strengths and weaknesses for another year.

Pricey and full of flaws

Pros - N/A

Cons - Everything

Colorado is no pickup It is an entry level sissy pickup with no sauce what so ever. Can't pull heavy trailers and drives like my grandma's car when hauling stuff in the bed. Transmission is twitchy and the mpg is even worse than big trucks. Never going with a chevrolet again especially used one Definately not the best experience I've had. They recommended Colorado after I explained everything and it didn't take me a month to figure out this was not what I was looking for. Very poor experience with crump reese and Jake

Rugged Colorado

Pros - Regular cab, economic, strong built

Cons - Compact size, not much of torque, a space in 2nd row feels insufficent

Light weight quick Crewcab this can has good built quality a sufficiently powerful engine gives a it is good on fuel economy, more recreational use i have made for it, rather than occupational. for some holidays to carry equipment and cargo. it has strong built quality as it can good torque and it offers good driving dynamics with a higher ground clearance. pull trailers. soft touch material inside

Colorado's throttle positioning sensor

Pros - Hauling?

Cons - Faulty throttle positioning sensor, stalls, overheating issues

9 years in and our Colorado is showing signs of grey hair My Colorado has been in the family for 9 years now and hasn't been what I can call an ideal pick up by any means. Starting with the throttle sensor issues, stalling, lack of power to make it up on the steeper gradients and poor mpg of course. Used to tow well until these issues. Had to replace the throttle sensor which cleared the stalling issue only to make way for overheating. Now I have a truck that only drives on flat roads and can't drive on slopes or hilly areas and doesn't have enough to pull a trailer. We had bought it from Salt lake valley chevrolet and as I remember, they did give us a significant discount on it. Over the years, things went pretty good with them and whenever I'd take it to have repaired or serviced, they'd do everything with minimal cost. Everything however has changed now and looking at the issues it has started to develop, I've been told by Todd to trade it in for another pickup. I think I might as well go with the advice.

Even after being an aging model, there are no changes made for the 2011 model year but it still offers pretty decent performance in its segment, when properly specced and though it may not be as sophisticated as its rivals, the Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma, it still one of the crowd favorites at a starting price of $24,885.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Pricing and Features

9.0/10

The Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab is offered in three trims alongside the 4WD drivetrain option. It also is offered with a different engine for each trim, ranging from a frugal four-cylinder to a meaty five-cylinder one, while the top-spec 3LT trim gets a large V8 engine. There’s plenty of features and technology on offer right from the base trim and the higher trims get only a few additional features along with the change in the engine.

We Recommend

The base engine has very poor performance and since there is not much difference between the other two trims, the 3LT trim should be the preferred choice with the higher engine performance and fully-loaded cabin.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Engine and Performance

7.5/10

The 2011 Chevy Colorado is offered with a variety of engine choices, the top trim gets a powerful 300 hp 5.3-liter V8 engine while the mid-level trim gets a strong 3.7-liter five-cylinder engine with 242 hp. The base engine is a 2.9-liter four-cylinder unit that is good for 185 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque.

All the engines are mated to the same 4-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to the rear wheels as standard. The performance from the base engine is disappointing while the two engines are well suited for the truck.

The Nissan Frontier is one of the most affordable trucks in this comparison and yet has the highest engine output which translates to a superior hauling tugging performance. The Ford Ranger is the quickest off the line but falls a bit short when compared to the Nissan, in terms of towing and payload capacities. The Chevrolet Colorado with its base engine has the lowest performance with the Toyota Tacoma having only marginally better performance.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy

7.5/10

The advantage of opting for a compact pickup truck is the frugality that it offers over the full-size ones. The 2011 Colorado is rated for 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the combined fuel economy is rated for 21 mpg by the EPA. The 19-gallon fuel tank is on the smaller side but still offers a decent driving range.

The Nissan Frontier employs the largest gas tank to compensate for the high fuel consumption from the large V6 engine under its hood. The Chevy Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma have almost identical fuel economy figures but the Tacoma offers the best driving range, thanks to its larger gas tank.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Interior

7.0/10

The Chevy Colorado continues with its aging interiors which have been plagued by the poor build quality and mediocre materials quality. The seats aren’t as comfortable and do not offer sufficient support, overall the cabin lacks the refinement offered in other modern trucks. The two-position tailgate aids in carrying longer loads over the wheel wells.

The Ford Ranger offers the most spacious cabin in this comparison while the Toyota Tacoma has the most compact cabin. That’s because the Tacoma is only offered with a double cab with no Crew Cab on offer. The Chevy Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma have a similar interior space with the Chevy Colorado offering a marginally larger rear seat.

  • Front bucket seats
  • Cloth upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Chrome and Titanium Nova Silver-colored interior accents
  • Inside rearview auto-dimming with compass and outside temperature display

How is the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab’s infotainment system?

The 2011 Colorado has a basic infotainment system that offers pretty straightforward layouts and easy-to-use controls for everything and also comes loaded with plenty of features despite being an eight-year-old model. The inclusion of an OnStar subscription elevates the functionality by multiple folds.

  • AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player
  • Uplevel 6-speaker audio system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation
  • OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, Roadside Assistance, Remote Horn and Lights, and Hands-Free Calling
  • Bluetooth for Phone

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior

7.0/10

The Chevy Colorado also shows its age through the exterior design of the truck. Even when buying new, the truck doesn’t feel like it. The thick chrome bar that stretches from one end to the other at the front, splitting the headlamps and the grille horizontally compliments the chrome embellishments on the front bumper, while the flared wheel arches and minimalistic body lines keep the things simple and uninteresting.

The Toyota Tacoma despite being a double cab variant is the longest truck in this comparison and is also the widest. The Nissan Frontier on the other hand weighs too much but offers the highest ground clearance. The Colorado is the narrowest truck here and also rides lowest to the ground as compared to the other trucks.

  • Halogen headlamps and fog lights
  • Outside power-adjustable heated body-color mirrors
  • 2-position tailgate
  • Rear step-style bumper
  • Chrome-trimmed grille surround
  • 18-inch midnight silver alloy wheels

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Safety

6.0/10

Chevrolet isn’t a brand that takes the aspect of safety lightly, but the aging truck does not seem to cope up with the modern-day safety standards of the testing agencies. The NHTSA hasn’t even tested the new Chevy Colorado while it fares poorly in the crash test conducted by the IIHS. Apart from the wide array of airbags and a few safety features, there aren’t many features on offer which makes things worse for the Colorado.

  • StabiliTrak Includes traction control
  • Automatic Crash Response
  • Tire Pressure Monitor
  • OnStar w/6 months of Connections plan includes Emergency Services, Crisis Assist, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Remote Door Unlock
  • Frontal Driver and passenger airbags with Passenger Sensing System
  • Head curtain side-impact first and second-row airbags

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Colorado has been performing and selling well in the past but Chevrolet needs to change its habits of not updating its trucks for decades at a stretch. The safety standards have gone up and so are the cabin quality and technology in the market, and Colorado struggles in each of those aspects. Thus, it is better to look for other options until Chevy wakes up to take some hard and fast measures to regain its loyal customer base.
