Camaro SS, history has witnessed “Super Sport” badge adorning performance-oriented Chevrolet’s. But lately Chevrolet’s SS badging is limited to the Camaro’s - the power performers for the automaker. The rest of the Chevy lineup has adopted an RS nomenclature for its sports versions i.e. “Rally Sport”. The Camaro supplies 2dr coupe and convertible bodytypes in two trims, SS and LT1, powered with a similar V8 engine at an affordable price. Under Camaro SS one can opt for 2SS for more features than 1SS with the financial implication of $5000.

The Chevy Camaro SS, ranging from $37,995 for a standard coupe to $48,995 for a convertible top trim with leather upholstery and lots of extras. The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible is equipped with a powerful V8 engine, upgraded Brembo brakes, a performance suspension, bigger wheels and other technical enhancements for maximizing the performance in terms of elicited acceleration, agile handling, and braking capabilities.

The enthusiasts might opt for a lighter SS coupe (3,685 lbs) instead of a convertible (3,932 lbs), but the joy of top-down driving with performance, a four-seat sports car will be a bone of contention behind the wheel of the bow-tie badged pony car. The upcoming luxury sports car i.e. BMW Z4 M40i and true muscle car i.e. Mustang GT convertible will make the fight tough for the Camaro SS convertible.

After lightning, comes the thunder and so is the Camaro SS which thrills with its lightning power followed by wide-open-throttle-blasts. For driving enthusiasts, the standard 6-speed manual transmission completes the package.

How fast is the Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible?

The Camaro SS convertible offers optional 10-speed automatic transmission to harness the V8 power. Performing burnouts is easier with 10-speed automatic transmission, “Red Alert”, not advisable. If the Camaro SS couldn’t satisfy your adrenaline needs, probably you ain’t driving it. The mighty V8 is never short of power and facilitates chest-compressing acceleration. Piloting the Chevy Camaro SS throws you back in your seat as you hammer down the gas pedal and takes you to a top speed of 198 mph.

With the power-adjustable roof and added equipment, the curb weight of the convertible is slightly higher than its counterpart, still, performance remains unaffected. This track worthy stalwart, Camaro SS posted 4.0 seconds 0-60 mph time in default rear-wheel-drive

The boffo 6.2L also placed in this Chevrolet may beat the likes of Mustang easily in a straight line. The flawless 6-speed manual transmission completes the feel for a driving enthusiast. The much smaller, lighter and more refined Camaro SS delivers a driving experience without sacrificing comfort, unlike its predecessors.

How do the brakes perform on the Chevrolet Camaro SS?

The performance of a sports car isn’t just determined by the power and speed but the braking as well. Equipped with Brembo brakes, SS brakes reassuringly and consistently. The brake pedal is firm and delivers a smooth initial response.

How is the ride and handling of Camaro SS convertible?

The 2020 Camaro SS is not just a straight-line sports car, it is thrilling while threading the mountain roads as well. Doubt the category in which this latest Chevy Camaro SS be placed, either muscle car or a sports car? Also, don’t forget about it being called a pony as well. The 2020 Chevy Camaro SS holds the muscle to be called a true sports car with its superb ride quality and agile handling. It is not just a straight line burn-out machine but swirls quickly through the turns with ease and with body lean.

Thanks to Camaro’s astonishing chassis which uses Alpha platform bones and advanced suspension borrowed from the Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans of german origin. The resultant solidity grants handling better than any other heavier coupe. The double-pivot, control-arm and strut design of the front suspension along with the electric-assist power steering works quite well showcasing accurate responses, just perfection.

The available Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) enables smooth ride, adjusting for any road conditions. The MRC dampers firm up quickly for handling or relax for cruising. The strong brakes complete the trio and elate the driving experience to the whole new level.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Fuel Economy

5.5/10

The V-8 can run on four-cylinders at a time to save on fuel but this affordable sports car uses premium unleaded which adds a further cost. Also, the rear-wheel-drive supports better fuel economy as compared to the all-wheel-drive variants.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Interior

7.0/10

The SS convertible equips 4 seats but only 2 are comfortable. Upfront, the 2SS offers vivid Red inserts on the jet black backdrop. The Recaro seats are available in front for better feel and comfort but the standard seats wrap the driver with utmost comfort and don’t feel tiring. Disclaimer, don’t plan to bring in guests for a long drive. Don’t worry the rear seats can be used for extra luggage.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible front seats

Much to the credit, front-seat access is pretty straightforward and allows easy in and out. Also, the small-diameter, flat-bottom steering wheel gives slightly more clearance. Also, the driver seat offers easy adjusting and the shifters are well-placed for hard-driving scenarios.

The biggest worrisome factor for Camaro has been the Outward visibility, especially to the rear. Though a reverse camera comes standard which can be upgraded with a high definition camera for better clarity. The head-up display is available for the Camaro, visible almost with polarized sunglasses on.

How intuitive is the infotainment system of Camaro SS?

Chevrolet replaced its old MyLink infotainment system with an updated Infotainment 3 system offering an 8-inch touchscreen that upholds its easy-to-use legacy. The Camaro SS comes with a respectable level of standard technology features.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible infotainment system

With the Camaro SS convertible’s top-down, at a speed on 60 mph, the voice recognition system seems pretty useless. With the top, up (it takes less than 20 seconds to raise), the voice recognition system responds rather quickly but still needs to better its user-friendliness if it wants to beat Siri. the incredible Bose audio system overcomes the wind rushing and engine roaring noise with ease even with an open top.

The climate controls are separate and the 2SS Convertible's dual-zone automatic system deftly integrated the temperature controls into the center vent rings.

Key Infotainment Features

How spacious is the cargo of Chevy Camaro SS convertible?

The utility of the Camaro SS is compromised with only 9 cubic feet of trunk space but that isn’t bad for a sports car, but some rivals offer considerably more space. Does the cargo capacity of SS coupe worry you? Well, then the cargo capacity of the SS convertible which is just 7.3 ft might doze you. Isn’t it funny to take a sports car to a grocery shop and its boot can accommodate a maximum of five grocery bags, let alone the bulkier loads.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible cargo area

To make things worse, high liftover height and narrow trunk opening make it difficult to load and organize cargo. However, foldable rear seats are standard which is something to boast about.

The Camaro’s evolutionary design, it looks like its decade-old predecessor. Rightly, legends never die! So is the retro formula Chevrolet has adopted. The Chevy has introduced the face-lifted 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS as a 2dr coupe and convertible with the capacity to seat 5, much to the delight of Camaro enthusiasts. The new front end design for the SS is based on the Camaro Shock concept. The tweaks include repositioning of the bowtie emblem to the upper grille and rendering of the bar with the body color instead of black.

The sixth-generation SS profile remains the same inspired by first-generation 1967 Camaro. The high belt-line and low-sloping roof which at times interferes with rear outward visibility. The amalgamation of the retro and the modern craftsmanship keeps the Camaro SS alive and kicking.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Safety

8.0/10

Any sports car will never be the poster child for safety. This doesn’t mean it isn’t safe or devoid of active safety features. The Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible is a sports car with exceptional handling and control, surely feels safer. However, the Camaro 1SS is not equipped with many standard active safety features as compared to its rivals.

Buyers have to opt for 2SS to get more safety features. The Camaro 2SS comes with rear park assist, blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, and forward-collision warnings. The forward collision system can be shut off if you are planning for a track day.

The 2020 Camaro SS scores overall 5-star safety rating from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and 2019 Camaro SS got “Good” crashworthiness ratings but downgraded to “Marginal” for LATCH ease of use from Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Given the restricted outward visibility, the presence of a blind-spot monitor and a rearview camera is inevitable.

Chevrolet Camaro SS Vs Ford Mustang GT

Chevy introduced the Camaro in the year 1966, rivaling against Mustang since then. Surely, its the long-standing rivalry which everyone on this planet knows about. It is said that a “wise man gets more from his enemies than a fool from his friends”, definitely, Camaro and Mustang share a lot in common. Both offer powerful engines, agile handling, and exceptional fun-factor. However, Mustang wins the utility race with higher safety features, better interiors, and a larger trunk.

2020 Ford Mustang GT

Chevrolet Camaro SS Vs BMW Z4

The BMW is synonymous with luxury and convenience. With its classic roadster experience with modern conveniences, it offers features beyond comparison. Priced at $63,700 it is way costlier than Camaro SS convertible. The Camaro acquires the top spot with its powerful performance and handling. Thought the Z4 offers better utility in terms of larger-than-expected cargo space and quiet and calm interior with the top up or down. For the driving enthusiasts, Chevy Camaro is a true sports car that BMW Z4 can’t match.

2020 BMWZ4

Chevrolet Camaro SS Vs Nissan 370Z

In the class of convertibles, a comparison between the Nissan 370Z and Camaro SS might not be quite apt. The Camaro SS offers power, might, and control and is a track-ready car. Nissan is powered with a V6 which offers adequate power but isn’t a sports car. Both share precise handling and pure driving experience but the SS convertible adds the thrill. Also, Nissan 370z cabin is flushed with very loud with abundant road noise and unrefined engine with Inconsistent control efforts make it difficult to drive smoothly

2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Final Verdict

This pony car is a bright combination of classic muscle and sportiness. The 2020 Camaro SS convertible checks all the boxes for a good sports car. Entering its sixth-generation, Chevy Camaro SS is lighter, faster and quieter than all its predecessors. Chevrolet Camaro SS is also easier to drive with ample power, agile handling, and superb control. This affordable sports car surely is worth a try for all the driving enthusiasts.
