Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible offers two engine options - a base 2.0L Inline-4 and a 3.6L V6. There's also a 6.2L V8 in the Camaro SS and Camaro LT1 trims and a 6.2L Supercharged V8 in the Camaro ZL1, all of which are reviewed separately. The standard 6-speed manual transmission keeps the purists happy, while an optional paddle-shift automatic transmission is also available for those who are not really keen on shifting it for themselves.

The major flaw with the Camaro Convertible is its interior that feels claustrophobic. However, this Chevy is more focused on driving pleasure rather than practicality. From a performance standpoint, the Camaro certainly merits consideration. However, its weak points are more glaring than longtime rivals such as the Ford Mustang Convertible and the BMW 2 Series Convertible

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Buying Advice

We suggest you go for the mid-tier 2LT trim of the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and pair it with the optional V6 powertrain coupled to the 6-speed manual transmission. The Camaro Convertible 2LT V6 comes at a price of $36,290 and offers a fair share of upgrades over the base 1LT variant, for a justified price.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Engine and Performance

"This Camaro is a strong performer that blends speed with precision and enjoyment in a way that previous Camaros never did." - Edmunds

The 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible offers 2 engine options - a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, with a muscular 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. One step up from that is the 3.6-liter V6 with 335 hp. This engine offers more power but less torque than the 4-cylinder.

Regardless of the engine configuration you go for, the standard transmission choice happens to be a 6-speed manual. However, you can also get the optional 8-speed automatic transmission with the 2.0L engine or a 10-speed automatic with the V6 engine. All the grunt is transferred to the rear wheels of the Camaro Convertible, as, unlike its German rival, the Chevy does not offer an optional AWD drivetrain.

The small turbo engine offers a solid punch of torque low down in the range and makes the V6 feel sluggish in comparison, but runs out of steam higher up in the range. Speaking of acceleration, the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible with a 2.0L engine can go from 0-60 MPH in 5.4 seconds. Meanwhile, getting the V6 engine will bring down these figures to 5.2 seconds. Flat out, the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible has a top speed of 163 MPH.

Speaking of rivals, the Ford Mustang Convertible with its 310 hp 2.3L Ecoboost engine rules the charts in terms of power output. The Camaro slots in the second spot, meanwhile the 2021 BMW 230i Convertible's 2.0L twin-turbo engine is the weakest mill in this comparison, belting out just 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Fuel Economy

The V6 engine with automatic transmission helps in boosting fuel economy, thanks to the 'ActiveFuel' technology – and the transition between modes is seamless – but overall, the Camaro has a severe thirst for gas. When equipped with the base engine, the Camaro Convertible returns city/highway/combined mpg of 20/30/23

Bringing in the V6 brings these figures down to 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. However, the Camaro Convertible's fuel tank capacity of 19-gallons compensates for the average mpg figures and lends it a range of 437 miles in mixed driving conditions.

The Camaro's fuel economy is a little below average compared to the opponents, but it's right in line with its American muscle-car rival. The Ford Mustang Convertible's fuel economy is very much similar to that of the Chevy. However, it's the BMW 230i Convertible that is the most fuel-efficient drop-top in this comparison returning 27 mpg combined

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Interior

"Its comfortable front seats and straightforward layout are high points, but its torturously small back seat and compromised visibility inhibit livability." - Car and Driver

The Chevy Camaro Convertible's interior is a mix of traditional and fashionable. There are components of the first car here, such as the dual hoods over the instrument cluster and the various chrome circles on multiple controls. The base 1LT trim looks a bit spartan and gets four-way manual front passenger seats with power recline and an eight-way power driver seat, all covered in cloth. Although upper trims up the ante with leather inserts, aluminum interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated steering wheel, illuminated sill plates, etc.

Getting in and out of the Camaro is no hassle if you're using only the front seats, but get in the back, and you'll have a more difficult time. The tiny window openings and low seating positions create a claustrophobic and cramped feel. The preponderance of black plastic doesn’t help make it any more comfortable.

Small-item storage isn’t much better: those in front get two cup holders, a small glove box, and a shallow center console storage bin but little else. The Camaro convertible serves up 7.3 cubic feet of trunk space, which is the lowest in this comparison. Further, the small trunk opening worsens the case.

The base model features a seven-inch color touchscreen display with Bluetooth streaming, voice command. Sound is routed through a capable six-speaker system, which sounds best when blasting Iron. 2LT models also get SiriusXM radio.

The 3LT models add a more significant eight-inch color driver information center and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display with a premium Bose sound system with nine speakers and voice recognition. What's new for 2021 is the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some of the most prominent interior and infotainment features of the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible are:

  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Power mirrors
  • A/C
  • Climate control
  • Cruise control
  • Keyless entry
  • Power adjustable driver/passenger seats
  • Remote trunk release
  • Keyless start

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Exterior

"The low roofline is noticeable, although those acutely angled A-pillars remain an issue when it comes to forward visibility." - Carbuzz

The sixth-generation Chevy Camaro has been with us since 2016 and is one of the most contemporary takes on one of the most iconic, timeless muscle cars ever created under the Chevrolet banner. The 2021 Camaro Convertible isn't the biggest pony car, but its bold styling obliges attention when sailing on the highway or when parked on the side of the road.

The thinner headlights give the Camaro a menacing squint, reinforced by the bulging hindquarters and sweptback roof. In addition to a black accent exterior package, new this year are Wild Cherry Design packages for a real pop of color. The Camaro Convertible sits low and so does its roof. The beltline rises gradually as we move to the back. The traditional Coke-bottle shape has also been kept intact as the sides that taper inward merge with the expanded rear.

Speaking of dimensions, the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the bulkiest offering of this lot. Its curb weight is close to 3,700 pounds. It also has the longest wheelbase, which is surprising considering how deprived of interior space this Convertible is.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Safety

The 2021 Chevrolet Camaro earned a 5-star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA. Although it was not named the Top Safety Pick as Camaro failed to impress the IIHS: while it received a Good score in most categories, it only managed an Acceptable score for roof strength.

The Camaro earned the lowest rating of Basic for its optional vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system. The 2021 Camaro Convertible offers a decent suite of standard active and passive safety features, but the rivals are far ahead. Some of the most eminent safety features of the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible are:

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Side-impact bars
  • Adjustable front head restraints
  • Four-wheel ABS brakes
  • 6 airbags
  • Panic alarm
  • Brake assist
  • ABS and driveline traction control

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Competition

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Vs. 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible

The Ford Mustang Convertible is the arch-rival of the Camaro Convertible. Priced at $32,655, the Mustang gives a tough fight to the Camaro with its more potent 2.3L Ecoboost engine. Even though the 2021 Camaro Convertible exhibits slightly better acceleration performance, the 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible turns out to be superior in terms of ride and handling. However, the Mustang Convertible's interior is much more spacious and premium than the Chevy.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Vs. 2021 BMW 230i Convertible

The BMW 2-Series is a competent coupe with plenty of power—even in base trim. Chevrolet Camaro is an actual sports car in muscle car guise; the Chevrolet Camaro will go toe-to-toe with any performance rival and usually come out on top. The 230i convertible offers a level of refinement and comfort the Camaro Convertible can not aspire to reach. The reason why the Bimmer costs all that much probably.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Camaro convertible is big, brash, and as American as apple pie. It drives surprisingly well with the revised suspension to provide muscle car thrills on a sports car underpinnings. The Camaro's stand-out styling will be enough to persuade many buyers when they want a modern muscle car with a lot of appeal.
