Not every muscle car that looks like a muscle car has to pack a V8. Sometimes a muscle car only has to look the part. The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is a testament to that fact. This drop-top Camaro looks like a proper muscle car, aspires to be a family sedan, and lets you fold down the roof so you can bask in the scenery.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

What this Camaro Convertible does not do though is behave in the way most muscle cars do. The main reason behind it being its less potent 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder powertrain that makes 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque. Not that this engine isn’t powerful. Just that, don’t expect it to deliver the kind of thrill and excitement you’d get out of the V6 or V8 powered Camaro Convertibles.

The 2020 Camaro Convertible, with its roof down, looks a lot more appealing than the likes of Nissan 370Z, Audi A3 Convertible and BMW 230i Convertible. But these opponents do other things a lot better than the drop-top Camaro. However, the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible has something to offer to everyone.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Features

7.0/10

The sun-loving 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, which is powered by the 2.0-liter inline-four engine, is available in three different trim levels. The least expensive trim, 1LT is available at a price of $31,500. Then there’s the more expensive 2LT which costs another $2,000 over the base variant. Lastly, there’s the 3LT variant of the 2020 Camaro Convertible lineup. Available at a price of $37,500, the 3LT is the most expensive variant of the 2020 Camaro Convertible.

Several mechanical features like a 6-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine are standard across the range. The 1LT and 2LT trims get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. While, the 3LT version gets an 8-inch touchscreen. Other than that, leather upholstery is common in the 2LT and 3LT variants, but the base 1LT variant gets cloth upholstery.

We recommend:

All the different trims of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible are equally loaded with features. Keeping that in mind, the 2LT variant makes the most sense. It hardly misses out any features that the more expensive trim gets, other than an 8-inch touchscreen. The 2LT is powered by the same 2.0-liter motor, is just as powerful and practical, and has been reasonably priced.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is powered by the same motor that drives the Chevrolet Camaro Coupe. It’s a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that makes 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque. Power from the engine is sent directly to the rear two wheels of the Camaro Convertible with the help of a six-speed manual transmission.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible 2.0-liter I4 premium Engine

The 2.0-liter engine, rear-wheel drive and the 6-speed manual gearbox are all standard across the range. While there is an optional 8-speed automatic on offer too, the powertrain and drivetrain options have no substitute.

The Nissan 370Z has the most impressive specification in this segment. It is the only roadster in this lineup to be equipped with a six-cylinder engine, while the rest get four-cylinder engines.

How fast is the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible?

The 2.0-liter inline-four powered Camaro Convertibles are definitely not as powerful as the Camaros with a V6 or V8 engine. Nonetheless, the 2.0-liter Camaro Convertibles are still pretty fast. The engine sends power directly to the rear wheels. So even the lesser Camaro Convertible accelerates with authority.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible 0-60 MPH in just 5.4 sec

Peak torque kicks in at 3,000 rpm and there’s plenty of power throughout the rev range. The stick shifts seamlessly, and feels significantly light to use. Shifts from the optional 8-speed automatic transmission are also pretty smooth. However, the true joy of driving this Camaro Convertible is achieved with the manual unit.

Again, the Nissan 370Z is the quickest of the lot to get to the 60 mph mark. No surprises there as the 370Z’s big V6 engine makes the most amount of power. What does surprise though that the 2020 Camaro Convertible’s engine is the second most powerful one on paper. Still, almost all the other cars are quicker. A downside of the Camaro Convertible’s weight.

What about the braking performance of the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible?

Chevrolet has maintained their silence on the kind of brakes that the 2020 Camaro lineup will be equipped with. But all Camaros are known to be great braking machines. So there’s no doubt that 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is going to be any different.

The Nissan 370Z again has the biggest brakes, and consequently brakes quicker than the rest. It also weighs significantly less than the others.

What about its driving dynamics?

The best thing about any Camaro is the way they handle. The Camaro Convertible’s premium Alpha platform borrowed from the outgoing Cadillac ATS features advanced suspension geometry. At the front are double-pivot, control-arm and strut design suspensions that coordinate with the electrically assisted power steering.

At the back is a five-link suspension setup which keeps this Chevy planted while also making up for an adequately comfortable ride. The steering wheel on this Chevy is easily one of the best in the business. It is nicely weighted and the way the Camaro follows in the direction of the steering wheel is too satisfying.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Steering Wheel

Additionally, the Camaro can also be equipped with Magnetic Ride dampers. Doing so ables the Camaro to actively adjust the suspension from firm to relaxed depending on whether you’re cornering or cruising. But the available 20-inch wheels can cause a lot of pain over not so smooth pavements.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Of the three engine choices that the 2020 Camaro Convertible comes equipped with, the least powerful 2.0-liter inline-four is the most fuel efficient one. Although the base 2.0-liter’s fuel efficiency ratings are disappointing to say the least. The Camaro is a naturally heavy car. The Convertible on the other hand, because of its retractable roof, is all the more heavier.

That takes a huge toll on the 2020 Chevy Camaro Convertible’s MPG ratings. But the Camaro Convertible has one of the biggest fuel tanks in this segment. So overall range is still average.

The Audi A3 leads the segment as far as fuel efficiency is concerned. It’s least powerful engine consumes the least amount of fuel and offers its own perks.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Interior

7.5/10

The previous generation Camaros disappointed with the way their interior was laid out. Thankfully, for the year 2020, the Camaro Convertible gets a much modern cabin that is covered in fairly upscale material for the price. However, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro’s average fuel economy isn’t its most noticeable compromise.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Rear Seats

It’s the lack of attention they paid to the second row. For a family sedan, that this Camaro aspires to be, it is more than just uncomfortable for the passengers. The rear seats are actually only good for doubling up as extra storage space. The Camaro’s coupe design not only compromises the availability of headroom but also takes away a sufficient amount of legroom. As a result, putting people in the second row can be a punishment on the otherwise comfortable Camaro.

There are several reasons why the Nissan 370Z has been outperforming its opponents. There’s obviously the 370Z’s bigger, more powerful engine. It is also the fact that the 370Z has no second row. On the other hand, all other cars in this lineup get a retracting roof and a second row.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The not so expensive 2020 Camaro Convertibles feature a seven-inch infotainment on the 1LT and 2LT trims. The 3LT trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen. Regardless, the touchscreen features the following tech on board:

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Infotainment Screen
  • Bluetooth connection
  • WiFi hotspot
  • Chevrolet Connected Access
  • SIRIUS XM with 360L trial subscription

What about utility?

Think the regular Chevrolet Camaro has a small boot? The Camaro Convertible has an even smaller one. The mechanism that allows you to take the Camaro’s top off so you can feel the sun on your skin and wind in you hair takes up a lot of space on the inside.

As a result the already small trunk of the standard Camaro gets even smaller in the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible.

Still, it’s not the Camaro Convertible that disappoints with a small boot. The Nissan 370Z has the smallest trunk in the segment. On the other hand, the BMW 230i gets the biggest cargo space.

  • Climate control
  • Cruise control
  • Keyless entry
  • Power adjustable driver/passenger seats

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Exterior

7.0/10

Chevrolet redesigned their Camaro lineup for the year 2019, and the exterior refresh was not at all appreciated by enthusiasts all over. So for the year 2020, Chevrolet has again given the Camaro a mid-cycle refresh. However, Chevrolet has limited the change only to the front in order to save face.

After a styling revision last year, that proved rather controversial, the new front fascia adds a body-color bar between the upper and lower grille. The large mesh from 2019 has been scrapped for good. Even the Chevy’s iconic bowtie badge has been moved to the upper grille.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Side View

The overall profile remains the same. The 2020 Camaro sits low and so does it roof. The beltline rises gradually as we move to the back. The traditional Coke-bottle shape has also been kept intact as the sides that taper inward merge with expanded rear. Overall, the 2020 Camaro looks more intimidating than pleasing.

The BMW 230i is the heaviest in this lineup of four-seater convertibles. However, the Camaro Convertible is the longest, and it also has the largest wheelbase, which is surprising considering how deprived of interior space this Chevy Convertible is.

What are those eye catching features?

The most noticeable exterior design elements of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible are:

  • 18-inch 5-split-spoke wheels
  • Body-color power outside mirror
  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Low-slung profile
  • Retractable roof

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Safety

4.0/10

One of the several setbacks of the 2020 Camaro is also the fact that it does not come equipped with automatic emergency braking, and neither are they available as an option. But the several safety features that are standard on this 2020 Chevy include:

  • Back-up camera
  • ABS
  • Tyre pressure monitor
  • Brake assist
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Cross traffic alert
  • Airbags

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Competition

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible vs. Audi A3 Convertible

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is a car that has its own class. Probably because as far as practicality is concerned, it hardly fails to disappoint. The Audi A3 Convertible has a smaller, less powerful engine. Still it is almost as fast as the Camaro Convertible. Also, as a result of its smaller engine, the Audi A3 Convertible offers better fuel efficiency. The Audi A3 Convertible offers much better value for money in general.

2020 Audi A3 Convertible

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible vs. BMW 230i Convertible

The only reason to not consider the BMW 230i Convertible over the Camaro Convertible is the fact that the former is a good $10,000 more expensive. Other than that, the 230i convertible offers level of performance, refinement and comfort the Camaro Convertible can not even aspire to reach. The reason why the Bimmer costs all that much probably.

2020 BMW 230i Convertible

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Final Verdict

We all have come to greatly appreciate and love the Camaro for all the years that it has been around. Probably because it offers one of the most affordable V6s and V8s in the market, and those Camaros are undoubtedly great packages. But the lesser Chevrolet Camaros with the 2.0-liter inline-four engines don’t quite impress as much. Yes, they are very well equipped with features, but the real world application of the 2.0-liter Camaros doesn’t seem all that practical.
