2020 Cadillac XT6 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: July 20, 2020

After a long gap of 10 years since the 7 seater SRX was discontinued in 2009, Cadillac is now back with a new 7 seater family SUV, the 2020 Cadillac XT6. It is an all new model in the Caddy lineup and even though it does not carry the Escalade badge, it certainly seems inspired by its elder sibling.

The all new XT6 fills the gap between the smaller XT5 and the full blown Escalade in Cadillac’s portfolio and marks its entry into the hot 7 seater crossover battlefield.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

The XT6 presents a very well amalgamation of several elements of the GM family. First up, it shares some underpinnings with the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, there's an XT5 like front fascia with now a more imposing grille borrowed from the Cadillac Escala concept and last but not the least it has the Escalade like stretched up body with an additional row of seats. Design cues follow the same traditional sheet with signature Cadillac grille with vertically stashed DRL’s sitting below the sleek headlamps and you have the regular vertical tail lamps as well.

However the overall profile of the XT6 much closely resembles its European rivals, thanks to the low slung body which gives it a calm and composed stance, especially when viewed from the side. With prices starting at $52,695, the XT6 sails into the Luxury province, however it feels more inclined towards practicality than luxury.

The XT6 is spacious, gets the subsequent premium treatment with soft touch materials on the inside and yes you always have a bunch of electronics and safety equipment doing their part in this segment. However, is the 2020 Cadillac punchier enough to smack down its more vested rivals like the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Acura MDX and the new Lincoln Aviator? Well we would have to wait for some time to get back to this question

2020 Cadillac XT6 Features

8.0/10

As of now, Cadillac is offering the 2020 XT6 in two trims, Premium Luxury and Sport with prices starting at $52,695 and $57,095 respectively. The premium luxury trim can be had with a front wheel drive or all-wheel drive whereas the Sport gets standard AWD.

Both the trims come aptly loaded with plenty of standard features with major difference being the latter, as the name suggests, is upgraded with more sport oriented features like Center and rear slip differential and a sport tuned steering.

All premium luxury models get front wheel drive and comfort oriented fixed rate dampers. On the premium luxury you can have all wheel drive with single clutch differential as an option, however the sport trim comes standard with dual clutch diff at the rear.

Which trim to go with?

We recommend going with the Sport trim of the 2020 Cadillac XT6. The $4400 extra premium over the base Premium Luxury trim brings along dual clutch differential for better torque vectoring and also adds a much responsive sport steering that adds to the driving fun.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The 3.6 liter V6 unit delivers a healthy 310 hp power output on paper however, once you start rolling it around, you don't feel that energy being properly communicated to the wheels. The engine feels a bit hesitant in kicking off with a noticeable power lag down the lower rpm range. The engine takes a significant amount of time to open up and even at higher revs it just doesn't feel as energetic or as refined even as a Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade.

Part of the engines slice is also shared by the transmission. The 9 speed automatic is smooth in its operation, however, the shifts are just not quick enough. Take out the XT6 on a long spin and the scream of the powertrain for more power and an efficient transmission gets audible enough to displease you, something not expected from a vehicle of this class.

How does it sprint ?

Although the V6 powertrain in the XT6 might seem hesitant while kicking off from a start, the 7 seater Caddy boasts of an impressive 6.9 seconds run from 0-60. Despite the disconnected, initial power delivery, it's the strong mid-range that gradually builds up and the 310 hp motor shows its true flare. The XT6 could have posted even better numbers in the acceleration table, had their only been a quick shifting transmission.

However, the 2020 XT6 is not the quickest in the lot. The mighty Lincoln Aviator and the Acura MDX post quicker 0-60 time than the humble Cadillac. The Aviator is honored by its chunky powertrain and dynamic mechanical set-up whereas the MDX’s, comparatively shorter proportions, lightweight body and an enhanced super AWD, make it quicker than the XT6.

What is it like to drive ?

The all new 2020 XT6 does impress with the way it rides. The ride quality is very smooth and quiet, just as you would expect from a Cadillac. The relaxed and light steering wheel does its job pretty well in providing easy maneuverability. However around corners the steering does feel disconnected at times. Shift it to the available sport mode and things change pretty significantly. The steering and optional adaptive dampers tighten up aiding the overall driveability and better grip around corners. Body roll is kept under check and you always feel that you are driving a smaller car.

2020 Cadillac XT6 SUV Rear View

Opt for the sport trim and you are introduced to the more enhanced side of the XT6. As the name suggests, the sport trim gets a firmer suspension, sports steering with quicker steering ratio and dual clutch rear differential that vectors torque side to side. Along with these goodies, the sport trim also gets continuous damping control with active handling. Bundled with all these mechanical tweaks the XT6 Sport feels more confident down the lane with its better handling and agility over the premium luxury trim.

What about the braking performance ?

Braking is taken care of by ventilated discs at all four corners which are also accompanied by standard ABS. The brake pedal feels good, however, the same is not true for the braking application and its effect. There is a tiny noticeable lag before the brakes wake up and get into business. And yes, the XT6 is a bulky SUV and you do feel that bulk lingering behind, everytime you hit the pedal.

In the braking section as well, the 2020 XT6 turns out to be a mild performer. It just does its business, since it has to. The brakes certainly, don't bite as hard as the Aviator, neither the brake operation is as smooth as the Q7 or XC90.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The XT6’s 20 mpg combined is slightly on the lower side when compared to that of the Volvo XC90 or the Acura MDX. The Lincoln Aviator, even with its burly powertrain and chunkier proportions delivers similar gas mileage to the XT6.

The AWD equipped XT6 does enhance the overall fuel economy, over the FWD versions, but only marginally. Cadillac is also offering a Tour mode on the AWD trims, which restricts power delivery only to the front wheels. Cadillac says that the Tour mode improves the gas mileage, but however, the XT6 just couldn't match the refined powertrain and better gear ratios of the XC90.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Interior

9.0/10

Where the XT6 puts the most emphasis upon is comfort and practicality, and that emphasis is clearly visible, the moment you get inside the cabin. The cabin feels roomier with ample space all around across the first and second row seats. What's most interesting is that how effectively Cadillac design team managed to carve out sufficient room even for the third row occupants.

The interior ambience just feels adequately luxury, with a clean and minimal theme. The optional leather upholstery feels soft and smooth, but again, it's not the best you can get in this price range. An Audi or Mercedes level fit and finish would only lead one to disappointment. The dashboard is covered with soft touch materials, and so are the door panels, but you are often likely to grab one of the cheap plastic inserts like those on the paddle-shifters, lower part of the central console and the storage bay under the central console.

2020 Cadillac XT6 SUV Seats

There is also a contrast stitching effect that runs around the dashboard to upscale the premium vibe. Based upon the selected trim and optional packages, you can have the XT6 either with a polished carbon-fiber or wooden inserts on the dashboard. Both the available dash inserts work well with the overall interior layout and provide a nice and premium touch to the XT6.

The seats in the XT6 are very well cushioned and are comfortable enough to move you around over long journeys, without breaking your nap. Front seats are heated and ventilated and also get 8-way power adjustment. Sadly though, this new Cadillac misses out on massaging seats. That's something very strange, especially in this price category.

The rear optional captain seats are reclineable, and they offer good comfort and support over long journeys. The rear seats do get the heated functionality, but miss out on ventilation.

Another important aspect of the XT6, is utility. Keeping that in mind, Cadillac has packed its new member with plenty of convenient storage spaces. That list of spaces is really long, but to name the most striking one, there are two cup holders in each row. Well, that's something, not every other manufacturer offers. Not to forget though, each of the three rows also get their own USB type C and A charging ports. How thoughtful !

What about the infotainment ?

At the heart of the 2020 Cadillac XT6, lies an 8.0 inch touchscreen, sitting in the center of the leather and wood/carbon-fiber draped dashboard. The relatively smaller screen is sharp and crisp and it comes standard with Android Auto, Apple Carplay and navigation. The user interface is clean and hassle-free and the system is pretty responsive to most of your commands, without any significant lag.

Gone are the touch sensitive buttons and are now replaced by real shortcut buttons to access various features. In case if you don't like inviting fingerprints on your glossy screen, there is also a rotary dial to control the infotainment. However, where the XT6 disappoints is the instrument cluster. In an age where most of the luxury manufacturers are going for full digital drivers display, this one still houses the traditional analogues and a tiny 4.5 inch drivers display.

Infotainment features:

  • 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Bose premium brand speakers
  • Satellite radio
  • Electrochromatic inside rearview mirror
  • 360 degree camera
  • rear view camera
  • 4.5 inch drivers display

How much cargo space does it offer?

We talked about, the 2020 Cadillac XT6’s generous third row space. But wait, that extra room in the third bench comes at a cost of a tighter cargo area. In fact, the XT6 has the minimal cargo bay among the competition with just 12.6 cu-ft of area behind the third row. However, just like every other 7-seater SUV, you do have the liberty of folding down the third bench, in case you need more room behind.

The other cars in the lot, like the Q7, XC90, and the MDX offers comparatively better boot space, but they are not as generous as the XT6, for the third row occupants. Well, Lincoln is on an altogether different note, and seems like it has mastered the art of cabin space utilization. The 2020 Aviator, not only offers best in class 18.3 cu-ft of cargo area behind the third row, but also offers ample amount of room to the third row passengers.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Exterior

One of the best things about this new XT6 is how it looks. It looks unlike any other Cadillac SUV till date. Unlike the larger Escalade’s bold and aggressive stance, the XT6’s lower roofline and subtle body creases provide it a humble and mild appearance. View it from the side and the lowered window line reminds you about the XC90.

Interestingly, the front face still carries the distinguished Cadillac look with the signature crest grille, sleek headlamps and vertical LED turn signals. There is no extravagant chrome garnishing on the Escalade, however, we wished that the fake air-vents housing the turn signals, would have been more practical. On to the side, there are gentle body lines stretching all across to the rear, along with body coloured wheel arches, further adding to its politeness.

2020 Cadillac XT6 SUV Front View

The rear end is clean yet minimal, with vertical LED tail lamps and a horizontal chrome strip that connects both the tail lamps. To clear the rear clutter, Cadillac has smartly tucked the rear wiper upwards, underneath the rear lip spoiler. The rear view camera is also placed at the top of the rear windshield for better rear-field view and yes the XT6 gets two real exhausts at the back. For spotters, the Sport trim gets a nominal cosmetic treatment like blacked front grille, 21 inch wheels and blacked out tail lamps.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Safety

Safety is a top priority for every other manufacturer out there, even in their entry level cars. Needless to say, wearing the premium Cadillac crest on the nose, brings in a bunch of expectations and promises upon which, this new Caddy delivers very well. The 2020 XT6 comes packed with a plethora of standard safety equipment to ensure your utmost soundness. However if the standard gadgetry is not satisfactory enough to you, there's a whole lot of optional safety stuff, to pick from.

2020 Cadillac XT6 Competition

Cadillac XT6 vs Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 stands very tall in its class and for valid reasons. Compared to the XT6, the Q7 has a solid and premium build quality and the interior feels more spacious. The infotainment screen is larger too and is accompanied by a fully digital drivers display with a multitude of assistance features. Where the Q7 impresses the most, is its firm and composed ride quality. Riding on air suspension and Audi’s revolutionary Quattro AWD, the Q7 handles pretty well for its size, even around corners.

2020 Audi Q7

Cadillac XT6 vs Volvo XC90

Comparing the XT6 and the XC90 is a tough task, since both these SUVs make very similar promises of comfort and safety. However, the XC90 certainly has an edge over the XT6. The XC90 has a better and more premium build quality than the XT6 and Volvo’s clean and minimalistic interior design makes the cabin feel more spacious. The XC90 is also the better driving car here. Torque from the engine is linear all the time, and the smooth and comfortable ride quality is more enhanced than the XT6. Not to forget though, it is a Volvo, and it does get tons of advanced safety and driver assistance features including autonomous driving. And yes, the massive vertical infotainment screen is another handy stuff for the driver since it displays plenty of information and is easy to operate as well.

2020 Volvo XC90

Cadillac XT6 vs Acura MDX

The Acura MDX is a vehicle that presents a healthy blend of almost all the aspects one might look for, in the segment. The XT6 will certainly get you more bling, but the MDX promises uncompromised reliability, value for money and hassle free ownership experience. The MDX is one vehicle ideal for those who value their hard-earned money more, over fanciness. The MDX might stand behind the Caddy in terms of creature comfort and equipment list, however it is more dynamic than the XT6 around corners. At a price point of $44k, the Acura MDX is a better value for money.

2020 Acura MDX

Cadillac XT6 vs Lincoln Aviator

Even though the Lincoln Aviator is priced similarly to the XT6, it stands much taller than Cadillacs latest offering. With a more powerful engine and a smoother transmission, the Aviator offers the sheer driving fun, that the XT6 misses out. Apart from this, the build quality and interior layout is more upscale along with some mind-boggling luxury and driver assistance features. The new Lincoln also impresses with its superior ride quality and handling, thanks to the tight steering and the advanced adaptive dampers.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

2020 Cadillac XT6 Final Verdict

If you have been a hardcore Cadillac fan, waiting over the years for a humble 7 seater Crest, because the Escalade was too bulky and expensive, well then, the 2020 XT6 has to be your vehicle. However, If you are not a Caddy fanboy, to say the least, there are much more promising vehicles in the segment like the Lincoln Aviator and the Acura MDX, that are worth considering.

Not very luxurious for a luxury SUV

Pros - Looks, performance, AWD

Cons - Luxury, handling

Overall Review

8 /10 Overall Rating

It is a good SUV but a luxury SUV, it is not. I had high expectations and all those expectations came crashing down. It has been a month and there is not a single day that I have not regretted buying it. Being a 20 years loyal GM customer, Cadillac was the default for me when it came to luxury SUV, yet I have never been more disappointed.

There are better luxury SUVs available.

There is no easy way to say it but there are far better luxury SUVs available. It lacks in everything be it performance, comfort, or even the technology when compared to its better rivals like Lincoln Aviator. Once Cadillac stood at the pinnacle of American luxury but it has since fallen. GM needs to make some big changes if they want Cadillac to reach the heights and status it once had.
