The Buick Envision is quite a popular crossover in its segment and has been one of the best choices for family buyers. It combines the practicality of a crossover with an upmarket appeal and manages to present quite a value proposition to its customers. However, this time Buick has decided to take it up a notch for the 2021 model year with redesigned interior and exterior. Today, this crossover faces stiff competition from the likes of segment stalwarts like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln Corsair, Acura RDX. Here’s our take on the 2021 Buick Envision that’s soon going on early next year.

2021 Buick Envision Ownership Costs, Reliability and Warranty

Buick ranks the highest among the American Brands in the Consumer Reports Annual Reliability Survey. The Buick is hovering in the top tens of the survey for the past few years. Chevrolet is the only other American brand that has been able to reach the top 15 of the survey list. The average annual repair cost of Buick is $608, which reflects an above average ownership cost.

2021 Buick Envision Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Buick Envision has always been a crossover of choices and hence it offers quite a lot of trims in order to attract more buyers. It currently comes loaded with features some of which can be quite sophisticated to fix. However, it’s not known to be very costly when it comes to repairs. Most costly repairs include the engine and the gearbox which are quite reliable and long-lasting.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The Buick Envision provides good reliability. As per the J.D. Power report, the Buick Envision receives a reliability rating of 4 out of 5. The envision is reliable and easy to maintain. The repairs are fairly cheap and are not a hassle to get it all done. The Envision is considered a worry-free travel companion that has no safety recall or customer complaints reported by the NHTSA and such has been the case since the past decade. Buick offers complimentary maintenance for the first visit. On average, you would need to shell you $608 annually in terms of ownership costs. This is indicative of an above-average ownership cost.

The Buick Envision is quite a low-maintenance vehicle, especially when compared to its rivals. It does share a lot of parts with the other Buick cars which the company has done due to cost-cutting. However, this also leads to better part availability and lower cost repairs.

Currently, the car has no safety recall or customer complaints reported by the NHTSA, and such has been the case since the past decade. Buick does offer some complimentary scheduled maintenance for some initial months but its repairs even over 5 years remain infrequent.

Even if we consider major breakdowns which are quite unlikely in a period of 5 years, the cost of ownership shall not exceed $50,000 over the course of 5 years.

Warranty

The Buick does live up to its reputation of being one of the most reliable brands in the industry, owing to great warranty figures and covers complimentary maintenance for the first time. It offers one of the best powertrain warranties in its industry which covers 6 years making up for a worry-free car ownership experience. You can opt for extended warranties that can cover the car up to 8 years but comes at an additional cost.

Powertrain warranty

6 years/ 70,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Buick offers a 4-year limited warranty cover or 50,000 miles and a 6-year warranty for the powertrain or 70,000 miles (whichever comes first) for the Envision. The Audi Q5 and the BMW X3 provide the same duration of a 4-year limited warranty but a lesser powertrain warranty in comparison to the Envision. However, Lincoln Corsair offers the same Limited and powertrain warranty.

Miles Per Dollar

The Buick Envision’s annual running cost is about $7,880 which means that the car is capable of running a mile for every $5.63 which is quite at par with the segment.

2021 Buick Envision Buying Advice

We will recommend the Premium II trim from the Envision lineup. Apart from its decent mileage, it packs features including cooled front seats, top-rated infotainment and navigation system, and all the features that are available in the other trims.

The Envision is a good SUV that tries to balance itself between being affordable and luxury categories. It is a great option for people wanting to buy a luxury compact SUV which provides good value.

Is buying a used Buick Envision a good idea?

Buick revamped the Envision in 2019 with a new exterior styling, a boost in torque for the turbocharged engine option, and an all-new nine-speed automatic transmission. There are not many changes brought in this year in comparison to the previous models. If you are looking to hurdle up some dime, you can opt to buy an older identical model at a cheaper price.

However, the 2021 model has an all-new eye-catching design and if you are really on a shoe-string budget and looking to save some, buying the previous models, can prove to be a better option for your wallet.

2021 Buick Envision Engine and Performance

The 1SV, Preferred and the Essence trims of the 2021 Buick Envision equip a 2.5L DOHC SIDI With Variable Valve Timing (VVT). While the Premium and Premium II equip a 2.0L Turbo DOHC SIDI With Variable Valve Timing (VVT). The engine of the 1SV, Preferred and the Essence trims can churn a total of 197hp @ 6300rpm and 192 lb-ft of torque at 4400 pm. While the engine of the Premium and Premium II is capable of giving 252 hp @ 5500 rpm and a torque figure of 295 lb-ft @ 3000 rpm. Both engines offer adequate performance to deal with the city and highway life but the 2.5 L feels a bit lethargic over the highways. The 9-speed automatic works like a charm but is tuned more towards comfort rather than outright performance.

The Buick Envision Premium II offers a really competitive engine. The power and torque produced are almost similar to its rivals. However, the Envision Premium II is expected to be priced between $43,000 to $47,000 and provides good value in terms of horsepower and torque. Envision’s AWD setup also ensures that you get out of tricky situations but its no serious off-roader in anyways.

2021 Buick Envision Acceleration And Braking Performance

Buick's 2.0-liter engine allows the Envision to sprint from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.1 seconds. It is capable of a top speed of 130 MPH (estimated) and takes almost 127-ft to stop from 60MPH. Considering the segment, the sprint numbers are quite at par with the segment but lack push back feel that some of the rivals offer.

2021 Buick Envision SUV Accelerate 0-60 MPH in 6.6 sec

The competitors fare a better braking distance with the BMW being able to stop the car at 114ft and the Lincoln Corsair at 126ft.

The 0-60 timing of the Buick Envision is better than the Lincoln Corsair. The BMW X3 tops the chart followed by the Audi Q5 in terms of their 0-60 timing as well as braking performance. However, it is the Lincoln Corsair that offers the best braking setup which leads to the minimum braking distance when coming from 60 to 0 mph.

2021 Buick Envision Fuel Economy

The Buick Envision provides a poor fuel economy in comparison to its rivals. It gives 20/25/22 MPG on City/Highway/Combined respectively. It equips an average-sized fuel tank that is capable of holding 17.3 gallons and gives a cruising range of 346/432.50 miles on city/highway respectively. This is on the lower side considering the segment and is due to the Envision’s curb weight. As the 2021 model will be getting the same engine and powertrain we expect it to offer the same Gas mileage as the current model.

Looking at the rivals, the BMW without any doubt provides excellent fuel efficiency without compromising its performance.

The Audi Q5 and the Lincoln Corsair fare almost similar in terms of MPG figures but the Audi has an edge over the performance. The Lincoln equips the smallest fuel tank, while the Audi equips a larger fuel tank and also provides the best cruising range on the highway. In terms of the cruising range, the BMW and Audi are quite similar.

2021 Buick Envision Interior

There is no official word released by Buick about the 2021 model of the Envision. However, based on the photos, the 2021 Envision looks lower and wider than the previous model and this can have an impact on passenger and cargo space. The current Buick Envision offers a commanding position and an upmarket cabin. Hence, the 2021 model is expected to provide all that but take the luxury feeling inside the cabin up a notch. From the spy shot, it is clear that the 2021 model will dawn a futuristic look on the inside and offer a redesigned dashboard and center fascia.

2021 Buick Envision SUV Cockpit Area

The Envision seats up to 5 adults and provides enough headroom and legroom in both the rows. The Buick Envision has an attractive cabin but fails to feel and look as luxurious as its rivals. This is expected to continue as there will be no changes in terms of the interior dimensions.

2021 Buick Envision Safety

Scoring the highest possible rating of “GOOD” in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) crashworthiness tests and five out of five-star in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rating, the 2020 Buick Envision has proven its safety and sturdiness.

The 2021 Buick Envision is expected to maintain its safety standards. Apart from the safety standards, the Buick Envision offers various standard and optional safety features.

2021 Buick Envision Competition

2021 Buick Envision Vs 2020 BMW X3

In terms of Exterior, the BMW is a show stopper with a classy and modern feel and look. The BMW offers a much more luxurious interior, a better handling experience, a much more fuel-efficient engine, an exceptional powertrain. It offers more space and tops the SUV list in the price range. However, the Buick Envision provides a lot of value for its price, has Android Auto (the BMW does not), is a valuable option for an SUV. The BMW X3, however, outperforms the Buick Envision in all criteria.

2020 BMW X3

2021 Buick Envision Vs 2020 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 provides suave styling, chic interiors and provides an essence of luxury. The Audi also equips a powerful and thrifty powertrain. Overall, the Audi is a much more luxurious vehicle with better performance, powerful acceleration, and a better economy. Also making Audi a much more expensive option. Audi Q5 bites up on cargo space. The Envision lies in the middle of crossover luxury SUVs.

2020 Audi Q5

2021 Buick Envision Vs 2020 Lincoln Corsair

The Lincoln Corsair and the Buick Envision are priced competitively, have similar performance, and have minimal differences. The Envision offers better acceleration, while the Corsair takes the edge over better looks, upscale, plenty of features. The Lincoln also provides better passenger capacity and good legroom space in both the rows. Overall, the Corsair feels much more luxurious than the Envision for its price.

2020 Lincoln Corsair

2021 Buick Envision Final Verdict

The Buick Envision is a good vehicle for people looking for a premium vehicle to add in their garage without burning a hole in their pockets. It fits itself somewhere between being affordable and being in a luxury category and hence can be a valuable option for a lot of buyers as it is priced quite less to its competitors.

The Avenir trim might surprise us in the upcoming 2021 year. However, the Envision doesn’t live up to the standard of luxury and those who are interested in buying the high-end trims might as well invest in the base trim of the competition like the BMW X3, Audi Q5 or the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
