Believe it or not, Buick has been around with us since the early 1900s. So the experience part of the auto marquee is taken care of. Come the year 2021, the opinions toward newer Buick models have somewhat taken the bland route altogether. Well, the 2021 Buick Encore is here to change that, by fortifying America's voracious love for small crossovers, and of course the brand, Buick itself. Buick insists that a car as small as the 2021 Encore, can be practical enough, all the while catering to the fun part of this segment too.

2021 Buick Encore wallpaper

2021 Buick Encore is the latest trend introduced by GM and is expected to arrive on the public platform by June 2020. This one is comparatively smaller than other SUVs, even though it resonated with the specifications of Buick Enclave. The vague buzz about the new features like Advanced infotainment system, Stabilitrak, Quiettuning technology, Remote starting, etc added to the Buick Encore, has made people clingy to it. So without further ado, read our detailed analysis to know more about the 2021 Buick Encore.

The car is now in the second generation from 2019. It is rumored that General Motors is planning to give a slightly revised front and rear fascias with the exception of those equipped with optional sport touring package. Also, the 2021 Buick Encore will be incorporating forward collision alert, safety II package, Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and Sirius XM satellite radio.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Three Quarter View

There is another set of newly added components like QuietTuning technology, power moon-roof, premium LED lighting, head-turning wheels, and personalized and powerful ride experience with the Buick infotainment system. Apart from this, there is no expected minor and major refurbishment for 2021 Buick Encore in the powertrain department. So with these substantial changes in the pipeline, the Buick Encore has certainly stepped up its game against the likes of Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and the Hyundai Kona.

2021 Buick Encore Features

7.4/10

The 2021 Buick Encore will come in two trim levels, instead of the 4 trims that were a part of the Encore up until 2020 -1SV and the top-level Preferred are the trims in question. It is expected to have a price ranging from $23,200 for the !SV variant, which goes all the way up to $24,600 for the Preferred variant in the FWD setup. Moreover, you can opt for an AWD setup too with the Preferred trim, at a premium of $1,500, on top of the MSRP. Both the trims of the Encore are powered by the same 1.4L turbocharged Inline-4 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

With no resemblance whatsoever to the trims of the past, Buick has made the Encore out of sheer ergonomics. Although, major details regarding the trim tables are not out yet, nevertheless, one thing's for sure, moving up the trim levels, the crossover, Encore gets much more plush interior features and safety tech. Speaking of the various safety and driver-assistant features on offer, the 2021 Buick Encore comes with 2 external safety packages-

    Front and rear parking sensors
    Rain-sensing wipers

Which trim should you buy?

Our recommendation would be for you to go for the Preferred trim. Although the price is a bit more on the premium side of the spectrum when compared to the other vehicles in this segment, the Encore still offers great safety features that quantify the value-based proportion remark quite perfectly. Moreover, with the new safety packages on point, the Preferred trim is the best of both worlds, and thus makes the Buick Encore a practical, luxurious and highly responsive SUV, which is well worth the wait.

2021 Buick Encore Engine and Performance

7.7/10

The vehicle comes equipped with the only engine option available for 2021, a 1.4L turbocharged engine that churns out 138 hp at 4900 rpm and 148 lb-ft at 1850rpm. Peak torque is achieved in the lower rev band itself thanks to its potent turbocharged engine. The vehicle is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that is slick smooth. These figures are not unusual to the sub-compact SUV segment and are on par with the rest of the crossover's power figures.

2021 Buick Encore SUV has 6-speed shiftable automatic  Transmission

Rarely do people know that the Encore had a much more potent 1.4L engine producing 157 hp up until 2019 but was hence traded off for better fuel-efficiency, and the MPG figures for the same are a testament to that very fact. Now, despite the small displacement engine, the 2021 Buick Encore, is well versed to be a fully-fledged SUV, despite being a major contender in the subcompact crossover segment. Opt for the Preferred trim, and the 6-speed automatic transmission is more than willing to send all the power to all of its wheels for a rigorous acceleration and inspiring driving experience in the Encore.

Comparing Buick Encore with its rivals mentioned above, it is quite clear that it is a value-based proportion. Even though the power figures are not much better like its rivals, it does have better torque than the rest of the segment. It also offers quick and nimble tight turning radius and performance whether you are on an open or narrow road. Also, the turbocharged 1.4 Engine offers you a sporty ride experience with surprising efficiency

How fast is the Buick Encore from 0-60 MPH?

The Buick Encore can hit 60 MPH from a standstill in just 8.0 seconds. The vehicle can cover a quarter-mile drag in just 16.2 seconds, not that it should matter for a sub-compact family crossover. The engine despite popular belief sounds pretty muted when achieving 3-digit speeds on hard acceleration. The 2021 Buick Encore's segment-leading torque figures have had a major impact on achieving these times. The Encore being slightly on the heavier side of the spectrum, let's it down majorly, as and when compared to the Honda HR-V.

When compared to the Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and Hyundai Kona, it is clear that the Buick Encore has the best figures. While the Hyundai Kona covers 0-60 with 9.1 seconds, Buick Encore covers the same distance in just 8.0 seconds, despite the Hyundai Kona being the lightest crossover of the lot.

What about the Buick Encore's Ride and Handling?

The newly arriving 2021 Buick Encore is expected to have a powerful and sporty turbocharged engine with its all-wheel drivetrain and the 6 speed automatic electronically controlled- transmission. The turbocharged engine in the Encore is anticipated to offer highly powerful and sporty performance, impressive receptiveness, and outstanding figures. Also, along with this to provide you more confidence on icy, wet, or uneven roads, Buick Encore is already planning to assimilate and provide you with 'Stabilitrak' which automatically intervenes when it senses the loss of control.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Left Side View

Speaking of the handling features like steering and suspension setup, Buick Encore will be coming with front independent Suspension and a stabilizer bar. And it is also rumored that the steering wheels will be undergoing refurbishment and the newly installed one will be an elegant and sleek looking heated steering wheel, which is extremely responsive.

How quickly does the Encore brake from 60-0 MPH?

The 2021 vehicle is expected to sport the same set of brakes as that of the 2020 model. It's 11.8-inch front brake rotors and 10.6-inch rear brake rotors are expected to bring in the hefty 1.6-ton 2021 Buick Encore to a complete standstill from 60 MPH in just 126 ft. This is the only aspect where the Encore falls behind a bit to the other crossovers in the segment. Nevertheless, as the brake rotors pack in some serious bite in them, the brake pedals also feel light and responsive which helps the braking feel linear at all times. With the Encore having much better proportions this time around, the vehicle dipping ahead under panic braking is completely nullified.

2021 Buick Encore is well equipped with the stronger front braking systems than Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3. Although, when it comes to stopping distance, Mazda CX-3 takes the mantle in this case, which is then followed by the Honda HR-V and the Buick Encore thereafter.

2021 Buick Encore Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 2021 Buick Encore stands to deliver 26 MPG in the city and 30 MPG out on the highway for the FWD setup, although when you opt for the AWD setup, the figures face a minor decline of 1 MPG throughout., which are quite decent numbers for this sub-compact SUV segment. Although, the 2021 Buick Encore is tremendously economical if you ask us. The 6-speed automatic transmission does a great job of backing the potent 1.4L engine in the Encore to stack up some respectable numbers.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Instrumental Cluster

The vehicle has the biggest fuel tank capacity of 14 gallons, which goes onto show that, despite having some average MPG figures, the Encore can cover far more longer distances between fuel-stops that the rest of the segment can achieve. With a minimal of 6.3 tons of CO2 emitted per year, it is also slightly more eco-friendly and is relatively good for the environment too.

Coming to the fuel capacity, here also Buick Encore has the maximum fuel capacity. Honda's subcompact SUV, the HR-V is quite the fuel-efficient choice for the price figures and the engine option, it is being offered with. Mazda CX-3, on the other hand, stands last in this comparison, with the smallest fuel-tank of the lot.

2021 Buick Encore Interior

7.9/10

The 2021 Buick Encore receives quite a bit of subtle tweaks on the inside. These tweaks have been implemented for the sole purpose of assuring customers that are still on the fence for the little crossover, assuring them that Buick has still got plenty to offer on its plate. Buick Encore offers a decent standard dashboard area and interior space. The interior cabin is sumptuous, with the seats having enough space to seat in 5 average-sized adults comfortably. Even with the shortest wheelbase of the lot, it still manages to pack in decent space in crossover standards.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Cockpit Area

The interior-design is carried over from 2020, but with a few sensible changes upfront in terms of comfort. With only two trims this time around, the seats are draped in leather on both of them, with the front seats, having electronically adjustable settings, and moreover, it also comes with a heated steering wheel, this time around. But it lacks a fresh and sleek appearance when compared to rivals.

Analyzing the interior-spaces of Buick Encore with its rivals, it is evident that even though it offers lower leg-room than the rest, it still manages to break out a pretty decent amount of space for an average-sized adult. It also isn't overly cumbersome to ingress or egress from the sub-compact Encore.

What's there to keep you entertained?

Buick was never known for its interiors, as a whole lot of the dashboard was found to be bland. The complicated and lackluster infotainment system only added to its misery. Nevertheless, the 2021 Buick Encore is expected to have an astonishing 8" diagonal Buick infotainment system with touch screen, and voice-activated capabilities. It will be molded in a way that takes convenience and versatility to the next level.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Steering Wheel

Personalized and powerful connected ride experience by featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto compatibility, a trial version of Sirius XM satellite radio, and an optional Premium Bose 7speaker audio system to give you a concert-like experience will be an added standard features to 2021 Buick Encore from now on. Along with this, it is expected that the 2021 Encore will also come with a built-in high speed reliable 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot and 2 or more USB ports with the auxiliary input jack.

How big is the cargo-space inside the 2021 Buick Encore?

The 2021 Buick Encore stays true to its sub-compact SUV form, by delivering a yet another respectable number in the cargo-space department. Although, 18.8 cu.ft of space won't be enough to satisfy adults while out on long drives. Let's face it, Buick gave the Encore a small cabin space to comprehend with, and it seems we too have to live with it. Utility-wise, on the inside too, there are a lot of cubby spaces to store enough of your belongings, which is impressive.

At 24.3 cu.ft, Honda HR-V stands out to have the biggest cargo-capacity in this segment of family crossovers. Having said that, all the aforementioned crossovers seem to lack a bit generic in this department, and so you'd have to fold the rear seats to give way to even more cargo volume, and that's where the Encore takes the cake, as it has a better rear cabin space to spare.

2021 Buick Encore Exterior

8.0/10

A hatchback on steroids is what the 2021 Encore is. Both the basic 2021 Encore and the 2021 Encore GX, are on a receiving end of the minor yet much needed exterior update. A sleek and sculpted body of 2021 Buick Encore is really an angelic look that makes people cling towards it every time. Also, its eye-catching design cues such as athletic hood lines, that give it a slight aerodynamic feel and the signature lights give it a much more astounding look when compared to its rivals. A much-needed sigh of relief, considering what the previous model years used to look like.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Rear View

The dimensions of the Encore have also changed, but evidently for the worse. As now, resonating with proper sub-compact SUV dimensions, it houses the shortest wheelbase in the segment. Although, fret not, as the effect is minimal in the interior. Crisp cuts and creases make up a large portion of the crossover, with a long hard beltline rising gradually to the rear end, and flowing into the taillights. Moreover, when you equip the Base and the GX model with the Sport Touring package, you get a gloss-black painted roof, and a very appealing 18-inch gloss wheels.

In terms, of ground clearance too, the Honda HR-V stands out to be the best. 2021 Buick Encore, does well in this respect, even though it has the smallest proportions of the lot.

Some of the exterior features included in the Encore are-

  • Power moonroof
  • Premium LED lighting
  • Head-turning wheels.
  • LED accented tail lamps
  • LED daytime running lamps

2021 Buick Encore Safety

9.0/10

This is the part where you get your money's worth. Straight-out Buick has equipped the 2021 Encore with the most advanced and best-in-class features known to a crossover of its caliber. Buick has always done well when it comes to reliability and resonating with that same aspect, the 2020 Buick Encore has done exceedingly well and is rated high enough in crash-test safety, with the IIHS awarding the Encore with an overall rating of "Good" in terms of safety.

2021 Buick Encore SUV Crash Test

The 2021 Buick Encore has taken it up a notch with its feature list, all the while addressing the sole concern of family buyers, as to whether the Encore is safe or not. Come the year 2021, a plethora of driver-assistance features that were optional earlier are from now on standard in the 2021 Encore. With a complete focus on the passengers' safety, Buick has packed the Encore with a lot of active and passive safety tech to keep them safe at all costs.

Safety measures included in the 2021 Buick Encore are-

  • Side blind zone alert
  • Lane Departure warning
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • LATCH
  • Stabilitrak
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Rain sensing wipers

2021 Buick Encore Competition

2021 Buick Encore vs Mazda CX-3

When two of the best looking sub-compact crossovers go head-to-head, sparks are bound to appear. The Mazda CX-3, although a fairly new contender, in this highly contested segment, gives the Encore, a well-seasoned player a run for its money. It is subsequently better than the 2021 Encore, in majority of the performance criteria. But Mazda, on the other hand, may have an interior that may feel a bit outdated and bland even for a wholesome family's taste. Fuel-efficiency wise too, Mazda takes the cake this time around. So out of these two, if we had to recommend one, we'd whole-heartedly recommend the Mazda CX-3.

Mazda CX-3

2021 Buick Encore vs Honda HR-V

The only Honda that can stand up to the Encore, and may even straight-up beat it in its own game, is the Honda HR-V. With a much more powerful and potent powertrain, it races ahead of the Encore, with even better proportions. The only thing where it fails to impress, is in the ride and handling part, as the Encore has a much better driving stance, with an even better and graceful driving dynamics. As the Honda manages to beat the Encore in terms of fuel-efficiency, it also manages to zoom past it in terms of performance prowess. So to sum it up, the 2021 Buick Encore does not stands chance against the Honda HR-V.

Honda HR-V

2021 Buick Encore Final Verdict

According to the reported specs and varied feature list for the 2021 Buick Encore, it is sure that the new one will be more attractive than 2020 Encore in every which way possible. The Pros are good enough to hook you onto this car, but the wide list of Cons prove out to overthrow the Encore quite a bit, when compared to its major rivals. Even with a limitless safety feature list backing the 2021 Encore, there are much better cars in the market that would rather suit you, with their subtle appeal. So you should maybe consider your options before straightaway opting for the 2021 Buick Encore.

I'm someone who can overlook a few weak points if the overall package is what you want. Same goes with our Encore.

"Practical car"

Got in last december and it has been driving excatly how it drove the first time. No change whatsoever. Easy to drive and ample visibility still happen to be the best attributes among all the good ones. Good cargo space and keyless entry makes it the best practical car I've had in years.

"Encore looks good inside out"

First Buick for an avid Ford driver has been fairly impressive experience. The most distinctive quality of Buicks is its noise free cabin, something I've always missed in other cars. Safety is not the best in class but nothing disappointing either. Could have done with a few more color options, otherwise its a nice daily ride. Does well on highways and even better in city.

"One good low end car"

Talking about thrifty, our Encore is what makes every drive fuel efficient and no nonsense. A lot of features help to make driving easy and this car actually makes more sense when driven daily.
