The all-new 2021 BMW X7 is the German marque's continued interpretation of their luxurious 7-seater SUV. Assembled alongside the X3, X4, and X5 at Spartanburg, Carolina, the X7 is a thorough American-bred luxurious utilitarian vehicle. This is the only BMW SUV/SAV that has a standard 7- or optional 6 passenger seating.

The Core X7 model comes in two trims, xDrive 40i, and xDrive50i. While the former comes with 3.0-liter inline-6, that produces 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, the latter gets a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, that produces 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission alongside a standard all-wheel drive.

The 2021 X7 competes against luxury offerings like the Audi Q7, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-class, and the Lexus LX 570. All Germans are similarly priced, but since the three-rowed Lexus is the top trim, it has a higher price tag.

Being the marquees' most expensive cars, both the X7 SUV and the 7 series sedan feature new fascias that BMW will eventually pass it down its lineage. It has already started with the latest 4 series. The new kidney grilles are not just large, but stunning to look at as well. The design schematics have been cleverly complemented by those sleek headlights that emphasize the X7’s height from ground up. And since luxury is the word of the day with this Sports Activity Vehicle, BMW’s Diamond Cut Glass Gear Shifter Knob can put a Rolls Royce interior pale too.

2021 BMW X7 Front View

But the X7’s off-road capability somewhat comes off as a bit odd and yet not surprising at all. With options like Adjustable Ride height and Rear Lock Differential, the X7 can trade the broken country roads. And with an optional Second-Row Captains Chairs, the inner Shangri-La will stay as it is the new 2021 BMW X7.

2021 BMW X7 Pricing and Features

9.1/10

Sticking to the same nomenclature, core BMW X7 models will be in two trims, xDrive40i and xDrive50i. Aside from that, there’s also the M50i and the Alpina XB7 which are more of variants than trims.

As far as features offered in the trims are concerned, the X7 is from the 7 series. So, features are in abundance. Comfort features are of first-class, which includes, Mood Lighting, a huge Panoramic Sunroof with Light Adjuster, Individual Climate Control, Automatic Parking and Driving.

2021 BMW X7 Third Quarter View

The autonomous bit works perfectly but under 40 km/h. It comes in the Driving Assistance Professional Package at an additional cost of just 1700 dollars. There’s also a Driver Handling Package that keeps features, M Sport Differential, and Active Steering and Active Comfort Drive - this feature uses the forward-facing camera that’s mounted on the rearview mirror to read the surface and adjust the suspension accordingly.

The Luxury Seating Package gets Front Ventilated and Massage seats and along with Cold Weather Package, second and third rows get heated seats. At the front, even the Steering Wheel and the Armrest gets heated options. Both these packages will cost an MSRP of $2500, together.

Now, provided the starting MSRP of this massive five-ton vehicle is $73,900*. With an extensive list of options and packages, that enhance the exterior and interior, the BMW X7 can easily end up with a six-figure price tag.

2021 BMW X7 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The X7 is a pretty large car and large carS sometimes leave behind scopes for several faults. These come in many forms, sometimes in technology, hardware, and system issues in general. And provided BMW has heavily equipped this vehicle with the latest of techs, that at times might work as a disadvantage. Like, take for example the third-row seats, some times they feel horridly slow when folding down. The same goes for the second-row seats. While sliding forward to make space for the third row, the enthusiasm gets killed halfway.

Reliability and ownership costs

Official reliability figures are not out yet for the 2021 BMW X7. However, there have been a few recalls over three instances, Reflex reflectors not meeting federal standards, a back-up camera is not working, and a faulty steering rack. BMW has worked quite a lot on the new steering wheel though and that has significantly improved ride quality also.

The cost to Own a BMW over five years has been calculated by Kelly Blue Book at $78,372. This is provided the vehicle has been driven for 15000 miles.

Warranty

BMW has not complicated the warranty scheme like most marquees. It has kept a single comprehensive warranty scheme that lasts for either 4 years or 50,000 miles. This warranty scheme is comprehensive and covers all mechanical breakdowns. On top of that, there’s also complimentary maintenance that covers the vehicle for either three years or 36,000 miles.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the inline 6 is much more economical in terms of ownership compared to the powerful and high maintenance V8. A vehicle that’s sized like a mammoth requires some extra attention for the upkeep when compared to smaller cars which means shelling bucks that are as large as the car. Not really though if one drives the X7 for about 15,000 miles on an average for 5 years the cost per mile should be about $1.04.

2021 BMW X7 Buying Advice

The xDrive40i with its cheaper price tag opens a lot of scope for personalizing the vehicle as far as appearance is concerned. The M Sport appearance package with its black chrome accent lines and M sport badging does make it a nicer car to look at. But if unbridled power is what the doctor prescribes, then the xDrive50i with its healthy 456 hp, 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 is an absolute brute to drive. So, if being chauffeur-driven is a rare occasion, then the xDrive50i with minimal specs will not leave you asking for more. And if it is the other way around, then the xDrive40i should be availed with a long list of optional comfort features.

How about a used 2021 BMW X7?

Provided the X7 is a recent badge that goes back to 2019, buying a used BMW will not be a bad choice. It will still have all the latest gizmos, provided the last owner had ticked those options. What might lag will be the infotainment system, though that can be updated if contacted BMW. Also, a new one will set you back with a six-figure price tag compared to a used one.

2021 BMW X7 Engine and Performance

7.4/10

Making a five-ton vehicle move in comfort and at a steady pace, requires a big engine. The twin-turbocharged 3.0l inline-6 that is offered in the base xDrive40i trim, produces a healthy 335 horsepower at 330 lb-ft of torque. It is quicker, in fact, its 0-60 figures can put a V8 powered Lexus to shame.

2021 BMW X7 Engine

To make matters more exciting, the twin-turbocharged 4.4l V8 with its expansive tuning capability has been extensively used in many BMW models at varying degrees. In fact, both the xDrive50i and M50i feature the same engine but with different output figures. While the former produces 456 hp, the latter - 523 hp. BMW’s reliance on this engine can be extensively seen in other M models as well. Not only is this engine capable of propelling the car to quicker acceleration figures but also makes it extremely helpful when it comes to towing.

Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz give a stiff competition with their inline-6’s to the Lexus LX 570. Which despite being a top of the trim car with a 5.7l V8, hits peak torque quite late at 3600 rpm. Unlike the Germans, which hits peak torque as early as 1500 rpm and 1600 rpm, respectively. However, between the Mercedes and the BMW, the Beemer gets ahead with its 100 rpm early peak torque range. But the Audi Q7 with a much more competitive V6 and a lighter curb weight and significantly cheaper prove to be a serious economical choice.

2021 BMW X7 Acceleration And Braking Performance

Both the xDrive40i and the xDrive50i display good acceleration prowess at the top of the feet. No matter where and when these five-ton vehicles can easily propel and navigate through the highway, pulling out at ease.

2021 BMW X7 Accelerate 0-60 MPH Just In 5.8 sec

With 330 lb-ft of peak torque hitting as early as 1500 rpm, the xDrive40i with its smaller engine is quick too. The xDrive50i with the V8 is quicker by a good 0.6 milliseconds and even there the peak horsepower hits well under 2000 rpm, which makes both the cargo quicker of the line.

The BMW X7 sits on standard 21” wheels, the biggest in its segment. There’s also a 22” inch optional, with M badged Sport Brakes. The large discs have appropriately sized brake pads with excellent fade resistance. The X7 can stop nearby100 ft and that is pretty impressive provided that this is a five-ton car.

The Lexus with its heavier weight ends up being a slower 0-60 vehicle. However, the equally heavier Mercedes Benz GLS ends up being faster but all that potential pace is limited to just 133 mp, electronically. So, with no performance limitations, both BMW and Audi end up delivering the same 0-60 and Quarter mile numbers from the same number of cylinders, just arranged differently and at the same speed too.

2021 BMW X7 Fuel Economy

8.5/10

Both the V8 and inline-6 feature significantly improved fuel efficiency figures. Technologies like Cylinder Deactivation and Brake energy regeneration does help the cause, yet to a certain extent, the X7 cannot be outrightly declared to be conservative.

2021 BMW X7 Instrument Cluster

The thriftiest X7 has been estimated to return 25 mpg on the highway and in the city fuel consumption of 20 mpg. With a fuel tank that can hold 21.9 gallons, BMW’s luxurious seven-seater can haul the whole gang to longer trips with fewer fuel breaks.

BMW consumes the lowest fuel in its competition. Which kinda makes it the environmentalist in the group. For a 5370 lb vehicle to deliver a combined 22 miles per gallon, where it returns 25 miles on the highway alone is an achievement in this segment. Mercedes and Audi might not have efficiency figures of the BMW but all the three Germans deliver more range than the Lexus LX 570. Which again kinda makes it the most expensive car to haul on long trips in this group

2021 BMW X7 Interior

9.9/10

Irrespective of the consumer base, the X7’s crown comfort lies in the second row. The optional captain seats with 37.6 inches of legroom, not only is spacious but also the most luxurious. It gets power adjustments, massage options with heated and cooling settings, and its automatic climate zone - the BMW ‘s four-zone climate control. Similar facilities extend to the third row too with comfort features like its own USB port for charging and Climate control. There’s also ambient lighting at the back to keep away the claustrophobia if felt any and with a sizeable split-Panoramic sunroof, the interior of the BMW X7 feels airier too.

2021 BMW X7 Seating

As far as the front row is concerned, the tech-ladden, wood, and chromed line, soft-touch, the dashboard have a very BMW-ish touch to it. Tons of options give customers ways to enhance the interior both technologically and physically and with that BMW has managed to achieve a level personalization to the ride that makes it worthy of its price tag. The Advanced Vehicle and Key Memory remembers settings and can hold customization options for up to two people. Furthermore, an Ambient Air Package, Glass controls, Multi-contoured seats and the Harmon Kardon sound system adds that necessary panache to this palace on wheels, which is the BMW X7.

The Lexus ends up with more space at the front but the Mercedes Benz GLS takes the cherry away with its rear legroom space. The BMW has an average-sized cabin but it ends up with the least legroom space in the second row among the four. It is proportionally taller than all its competition which makes this car feel bigger on the inside with more headroom, equally at the front and third-row.

Some of the noteworthy features of the 2021 BMW X7 are:

  • 20-way power Multi-contour front sport seats including standard 16-way power seat functions
  • Automatic Panoramic moonroof
  • Automatic 4-zone climate control
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers with adjustable speed and automatic headlight control
  • Privacy glass

How’s the 2021 BMW X7’s infotainment system?

The large 12.3-inch rectangular shaped touchscreen that sits in the middle of the leather-wrapped dashboard can be controlled via voice and knobs on the center console. Gesture controls are however limited to the V-8 models. GPS Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Bluetooth, and a 32 GB hard drive come standard in the X7.

2021 BMW X7 Infotainment System

BMW s state of the art 360-degree view parking camera and a heads-up display is optional on the inline-6 models but standard on the xDrive50i and M50i. Furthermore, BMW’s Extended Ambient Lighting cleverly places ambient lighting throughout the cabin that enhances the interior with just the right amount of sophistication. No wonder, the X7’s interior has been compared to the base of a Rolls Royce. Some of the significant infotainment features are:

  • 12- and 16-speaker Harman Kardon Stereos and a 20-Speaker Bowers & Wilkins Surround-sound system.
  • Gesture control system
  • Rear-seat entertainment screens
  • Heated and cooled cup holders
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Push-button start
  • Quad-zone automatic climate control
  • The wireless smartphone charging pad
  • Standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

BMW awed the world with a very out-of-the-blue, big kidney grilled style. As much of a sight it was at first, the new design has aged quite well. It’s clever proportions not only amplify the exterior dimensions of the X7 but also gives its much required imposing stance.

2021 BMW X7 Three Quarter View

The narrow striped LED headlights leave a lot of space under the front fenders to the X7’s height. On the side too, by deciding to go with strong shoulder lines as opposed to the Merc’s round lines, the BMW X7 looks much more exquisite than its German counterparts. The large wheel arch around those standard 21” wheels with those new Y-Spokes and optional M- package Double Spokes design makes this a nice looking car also.

All in all, the 2021 BMW is a pretty big car, rather a wider car in its segment. It also has a higher ground clearance and with a curb weight that is neither as heavy as the Lexus LX 570 nor as light as the Audi Q7, the BMW X7 ends up having mid-weight. BMW further provides tons of features on the outside to make it a safe ride too.

The Lexus with its big front grille takes away the cake in the front fascia segment. The BMW with its functional kidney grilled setting might have been controversial at first but is aging pretty well. But with a massive curb weight of 6000 lbs, the Lexus ends up being slower than its competitors. However, the Mercedes-Benz still has the most spacious cabin in this lot, courtesy its 123.4 inches long wheelbase, followed by the BMW which is 122.2 inches.

2021 BMW X7 Safety

For a car that will end up with a six-figure price tag, the X7 is bound to feature some of the latest technologies. From rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors Adaptive headlights, and Drowsiness monitor, the X7 is one of the safest vehicles in the lot. There’s a Driving Assistance Package that features Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection alongside an abundance of features. The BMW has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute Highway Safety so as far as official ratings are concerned, nothing is out official yet.

Some of the noteworthy key features are:

  • Rollover sensor that triggers airbags
  • Front and rear Head Protection System
  • Park Distance Control, front, and rear
  • Daytime Pedestrian Protection
  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
  • Rear Cross-Traffic AlertBMW Assist eCall

2021 BMW X7 Competition

2021 BMW X7 Vs 2020 Mercedes GLS- 450

Mercedes Benz has been setting the standards for luxury inexpensive cars for quite some time, BMW has tried to match up to its standards and ends up giving us a different interpretation. While, both Germans heavily use Alcantara leather in its cabin by, key features like a trackpad and knob control, infotainment screens end up differentiating the Mercedes from the BMW.

2020 Mercedes GLS- 450

While the Merc chooses to be more futuristic, BMW chooses the same too but without any limits. Small things like the Android and Apply display, the BMW showcases it on a full screen, the Merc on a reduced screen. The choice boils down to the exterior. If the new kidney grille appeals to your taste, then the Merc will not stand a chance.

2021 BMW X7 Vs Audi Q7

The Q7 was reigning in this segment for quite some time. However, it has bee quite some time that the Q7 has received an update. So as far as the relevance of design is concerned, the BMW X7 will appeal more than the Audi right now. However, Audi’s new Q8 does bring the competition close to the X7’s turf but since it isn’t a three-row SUV, it isn’t compatible.

2021 Audi Q7

2021 BMW X7 Vs Lexus LX 570

The Japanese Lexus has a bigger standard engine, taller than its competition but with a heavier curb weight and sluggish performance figures, it ends up looking quite bored in front of the X7.

2021 Lexus LX 570

That large grille sure does make the Lexus look good, but it fails that exude that executive aura that comes with a BMW. The X7 has a more imposing stance than the Lexus. Despite having an elaborate feature list, the interior quality just fails to live up to the German standards of the X7.

2021 BMW X7 Final Verdict

7.4/10

The X7 with its wide range of engine choices and an abundance of standard comfort features makes this a very delightful package. The three rows are equally spacious and none of them misses out on any luxurious offerings. Both the inline-6 and V8 are a delight in daily driving scenarios and the subtle yet imposing design will make head turns too.

The BMW X7 wears the seven badge and that's adjourned to vehicles that have always uplifted BMW ‘s standard and innovation in automobile luxury. The 2021 BMW X7 lives up to that above statement and has yet again managed to deliver a standard that will eventually trickle down and set the benchmark for all BMW models in the future.

Drives like a normal SUV when in town but when on the freeway it absolutely flies! Could not have asked for a better SUV than BMW X7. It is FUN, capable, practical, and comfortable. The ride quality is smooth and so is the power delivery.

BMW X7 is a symbol of class with performance

Pros - Good low end torque, decent acceleration, paint quality

Cons - I love everything

10 /10 Overall Rating

Decently designed powertrain and well executed drivetrain. The refined engine produces max torque at low rpms where it gets going with minimum foot weight on the pedal. Not an exception for impeccable acceleration as well and does a pretty good job in quater mile-ish sprints.

A wrong step there

Pros - Almost everything like run flat tires, drive display, driving in general, comfort etc

Cons - Offroading, Too many steering mounted buttons, Rear visibility

So the very first thing that lets a driver ease up while driving are those run flat tires thereby giving a sense of safety. Apart from that, bmw's are supposed to be good when the question is driving and this one is no different. I however think they stepped in an unknown territory with the offroading package that adds a few dedicated equipment and features but lacks that factor of robustness. Drives wonderful and can climb the steepest of hills with ease but that chrome strips side moldings and on front grille including lip spoiler isn't the best way to ensure nothing goes south when you're inclined on a rocky surface trying to make your way through. Could easily damage the paint or that chrome work and one won't even know about it. So, if I have to sum my driving experience of my X7, I would call it the best suv by far I've driven but still stupid from a brand of such scale to not think about these minor loopholes. I'm not even counting the rear visibility yet which plays an important role in offroading or sand bashing

BMW X7

Drives like a normal SUV when in town but when on the freeway it absolutely flies! Could not have asked for a better SUV than BMW X7. It is FUN, capable, practical, and comfortable. The ride quality is smooth and so is the power delivery.
