Expected to hit the market at the end of 2020, the BMW X6 competes against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 and the Audi Q7. Here’s our take on the 2021 BMW X6 that is soon going to be on sale in the North American market.

2021 BMW X6 Features

6.5/10

The BMW X6 is offered in three basic trims: the rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i, the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i and the sporty, V8-powered M50i. There's also the high-performance X6 M, which is reviewed separately sice it's an entirely different car with better performance oriented underpinnings.

2021 BMW X6 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

BMWs are sophisticated, classy, and pretty much everything you would want in a car. Still, BMWs get a bad reputation for reliability but it’s not wholly true and German brands like BMW and Mercedes have been making pretty solid cars. The J.D. Power Ratings put BMW at the top for Quality Overall and above average for Performance and Design. Overall. To put things in perspective, the X6 offers good MPG figures and decent performance but lacks cargo capacity.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The 2020 BMW X6 is still a new car hence; it has not been yet evaluated by J.D. Power. However, the BMW X6 shares the platform with 2019 BMW X5 which holds a J.D. power rating of 78 out of 100 and we expect the BMW X6 to retain the same reliability scores as the X5. The X6 has a decent score of 80 out of 100 in terms of resale value.

On average, the X6 would cost you about $65,00. Buyers from Arizona will be paying slightly less for the X6 while people from Florida will have to pay higher for the same. The annual maintenance costs for X6 amounts to $3073 which is expected for such an SUV.

There is one recall reported by the NHTSA for 2020 X6 due to issues in the backup camera as it does not display an image on the central screen that increases the risk of a crash.

Warranty

The 2021 BMW X6 comes with a limited warranty lasting four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and a powertrain warranty lasting 4 years or 50,000 miles and a four-year/unlimited-miles roadside assistance program. Nevertheless, BMW offers one of the best complimentary maintenance plans in the industry.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles

Powertrain warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles

24-hour roadside assistance

The warranty covers Bumper-to-Bumper coverage, Anti-Corrosion/Perforation, Powertrain coverage, and roadside assistance.

Miles per Dollar

The BMW X6 will have a MPD (miles per dollar) ratio of 4.88. This means the X6 runs for 4.88 miles for every dollar you spend on it. This ratio is achieved by factoring all the running costs including taxes and insurance to the average distance covered in a year which comes to $3,073 and 15,000 miles respectively.

2021 BMW X6 Buying Advice

All the BMW X6’s trim has a decent engine with the standard feature but you get more upgraded features as you go up to the top variant. The base X6 sDrive40i is the only model with a rear-wheel drive. The base X6 model has a long list of standard features and a competent powertrain, and it costs nearly $20,000 less than M50i though the X6 M50i offers greater performance but still, the 2021 BMW X6 sDrive40i has better fuel economy figures and gets you nearly all optional features. So, don’t worry about buying the higher trim to get exclusive amenities. Hence, we recommend going for the base BMW X6 sDrive40i.

Is buying a used BMW X6 a good idea?

The BMW X6 will lose around 43 percent in the first three years. Moreover, the maintenance cost of the X6 is also very high as compared to the average cost of its rivals. The total fitness of the X6 is around 12 years, and opting for a used BMW X6 version gives it around 10 more years of perfect usability.

2021 BMW X6 Engine and Performance

8.9/10

We expect there should be no changes under the hood of the 2021 BMW X6 and it comes with a similar 3.0L six-cylinder combined with the rear-wheel-drive that pumps out 335 HP and 330 lb-ft of torque. The X6 M50i trim has 4.4L twin-turbo V8 that churns out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed transmission comes standard across the X6 line-up. This transmission has been tweaked to provide seamless power delivery to the rear wheels of the car.

2021 BMW X6 Engine

The top range X6 M still comes with 4.4-liter V8 engines that deliver 600 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque.

Comparing the performance, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 gives the best performance with 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, while the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and BMW X6 are similar in every aspect. Q7 is the least expensive vehicle in the lineup making it a great value proposition.

2021 BMW X6 Acceleration And Braking Performance

There are two options available with this turbo inline-six engine; the xDrive40i and BMW X6 M50i. The BMW X6 can hit the 0-60 MPH in 5.2 seconds and the quarter-mile mark in 14.4 seconds, which is almost a second faster than the generation it replaces.

2021 BMW X6 Fuel Economy

7.1/10

The 2020 BMW X6 is rated one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its segment, with economy figures of 21 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. The V8-powered version of BMW X6 is noticeably less efficient and it is very obvious with such powerful figures. while the top variant X6M offers up to 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

2021 BMW X6 Interior

6.8/10

The 2021 X6 is one of the few automobiles that comes with genuine and upmarket leather upholstery. The X6’s interior offers premium and luxury features. The leather surface is floated on the dashboard, center console, and other places. Just like its predecessor, the X6 seats five passengers in the utmost luxury.

2021 BMW X6 Front Seat

The 16-way power driver seats allow for a high driving position. Throw in a few more thousands into the pot and have the pleasure of getting your hands on the premium Merino leather, which floods your interior from the seats to the center stack around the dashboard too. On the inside, the BMW X6 offers plenty of storage spaces around the door pockets along with the glove box. The cargo space is reduced due to the sloping roofline design. The vehicle offers 59.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

X6 offers the most room in the front row among the competition but when it comes to rear row, Audi takes the win here. However, Mercedes is the king of the interior segment offering a comfortable and luxurious cabin among the competition.

How’s the 2021 BMW X6’s infotainment system?

The 2021 BMW X6’s infotainment system consists of a 12.3-inch instrument digital instrument cluster that one can set up to exhibit a variety of information and a 12.3-inch touchscreen along with a rotary knob placed at the center of the dashboard, that gives the X6 a more modern feel. They are very responsive and user-friendly. The infotainment also supports voice commands and can operate with voice control, touchscreen, and gesture control. 2021 BMW X6 Exterior

8.0/10

The 2021 BMW X6 will return in a similar design as its current model because it is largely a carryover model. The newest generation X6 shares a similar platform with the recently all-new X5. The BMW X6’s rear is appealing, owing to its slim LED headlights, sculpted tailgate, and a sporty rear bumper. The X6 is expected to come with 20-inch wheels with a palette of options.

2021 BMW X6 Third Quarter View

The vehicle comes with an aggressive bumper with large intake vents along with fully adaptive LED headlamps designed to match the aggressive front end. The side profile of BMW X6 still retains the stunning sporty design that gives it a sleeker look. The tail of X6 looks the best in its xDrive M50i trim due to its massive quad tailpipes run throughout the rear. The new X6 is slightly lower than before for improved aerodynamics and a reduced center of gravity.

2021 BMW X6 Competition

7.0/10

2021 BMW X6 vs.Mercedes Benz GLE 450

The Mercedes Benz GLE 450 offers better performance than the base BMW X6. Both cars offer an almost similar list of standard and optional features. While the Mercedes Benz GLE 450’s price is less than the X6, it lacks acceleration. The GLE has world-class interior quality and offers engaging handling.

2021 Mercedes Benz GLE 450

The 2021 BMW X6 offers better fuel economy though. The Mercedes Benz GLE 450 is a better option than the base BMW X6, considering its price and interior. If you have a soft-corner for BMW then you should go for the top range to get better performance with advanced features.

2021 BMW X6 vs. Porsche Cayenne

The 2021 BMW X6 offers more luxury features and far better fuel efficiency. The Porsche Cayenne is sportier and more engaging to drive than the X6, though it lacks acceleration. Both the cars offer somewhat similar cargo space and performance yet the base BMW X6 costs you less. So, the BMW X6 is a better option to get more luxury features with less price.

2021 Porsche Cayenne

2021 BMW X6 Final Verdict

8.1/10

The new 2021 BMW X6 is better than ever before and it features an opulent and roomy interior with comfortable seats. The BMW X6 also boasts good reliability ratings and offers the best fuel-economy figures among its rivals as well. Still, the BMW X6 has some flaws like the cargo space offered is among the lowest in the class and it also has poor rearward visibility. The BMW X5 has a similar line-up of engines as the X6 and similar features, but it offers much more cargo space. If the cost doesn’t matter and if you prioritize engine power and interior luxury over top-notch handling and practicality then it's worth considering the new BMW X6.
