Overall Rating

A new trim has been added to the stable which adds more oomph. Both are powered by a turbocharged V8 engine, producing 456 horses and 479 twisties and the power bumps up considerably for the M50i. The humble one comes in at $76,150 and the mental M50i at $ 82,150.

The new bimmer comes loaded with a lot of mechanical upgrades that focus on making the SUV sound more meaner, handle sharper and brake much harder. This monstrosity takes on the likes of Porsche Cayenne, Maserati Levante and the humongous Lexus LX 570. This is going to be an interesting battle as you have a few surprises in store.

Which 2020 BMW X5 50i trim should you go for?

We recommend you to go for the more bonkers BMW X5 M50i which with the added power also includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential, an M Sport Exhaust, bigger and grippier brakes and tunable suspension with adaptive dampers. The extra premium is a small price to pay to experience the bimmer in its full glory.

The add-on packages are an added luxury. An extra $4,550 will add a few added comfort features along with a few driver assistance features.

2020 BMW X5 M50i SUV Engine and Performance

BMW offers two very potent trims powered by a 4.4L turbocharged V8 which produces enough power and torque to make the behemoth of a car lose its traction when blasting off the line! The xDrive50i pumps out 456 horsepowers and 479-pound feet of torque and the M50i bumps it up to 523 horsepowers and 553-pound feet of torque.

The fire breathing 4.4L Turbo V8 of the M50i in all its glory

The power is transferred to all four wheels via BMW’s intelligent xDrive system which helps you experience all of the power unconditionally. Torque comes in as low as 1500 rpm which helps you pull the SUV out of any given situation without flexing. The sweet symphony from the M Sport exhaust system is convincing to the extent that you would forget that you are in an SUV. The various driving modes change the character of the car as per your will. It includes ECO, PRO, COMFORT and SPORT modes with a total of four modes.

The added M Sport differential in the M50i makes sure that there is minimal loss of power when transferred to wheels. The competition-bows it's head in front of the mighty bimmer as the most powerful Lexus LX 570 tops out at just 383 horses and 403 pound-feet of torque. Maserati Levante and Porsche Cayenne Coupe are way below it, that there is no reason for comparison.

How quick does the X5 pull?

This mammoth of a car pulls hard. You would never expect to be thrown back into the seat when accelerating, but the xDrive50i and M50i equally surprises you with. The defying acceleration makes the bimmer pounces to 60 MPH in an impressive 5.2 seconds.

The mammoth X5 M50i does 0-60 in a staggering 4.1 seconds!

BMW can clock such impressive times for the xDrive50i due to the added brawn from the powerful V8 engine which was absent in the xDrive40i. The added power gives the X5, much-needed boost. The mental M50i does the 0-60 run in staggering 4,1 seconds! Now that’s a quick SUV.

Maserati Levante comes pretty close to the X5 with an impressive 5.8 seconds but its 3.0L V6 doesn’t have the juice to bust the bimmer. Porsche Cayenne slots in between the two with 5.7 seconds due to an impressive power to weight ratio.

How well does the 2020 X5 handle?

Don't let the sheer size fool you into thinking that the X5 is sluggish. It will happily prove you wrong in the first corner. The ride is much more refined than its predecessor and the steering feels much more lively now, which gives it a steady handler. The various driving modes help give the SUV multiple personalities, each of which is fine-tuned for different terrains. These include ECO, PRO, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. The last one is kinda scary!

2020 BMW M50i taking on curves like a pro

X5 takes corners while being extremely planted, providing the driver with minimal body roll and maximum confidence. The adaptive dampers do an impressive job of making the X5 M50i feel less of an SUV and more of a sporty sedan. The M Sport adaptive dampers completely changes the attitude of the car.

How strong does the brakes bite?

BMW has worked on to give you some extra bite by tweaking on the brake pads. It now dissipates heat more efficiently, which gives a stronger bite. Despite the bulk, X5 has very less nose dive and at times you won’t even notice it. The 2020 M50i gets bigger brakes

Bigger bitier slotted brakes on the 2020 X5 M50i

The added benefits of emergency braking helps make the most of the brakes on the bimmer. 2020 X5 also gets BMW’s integrated brake-by-wire system which is a crucial part of self-driving systems which would pave the way for future motoring.

Not much of the data is available at the moment, but as the brakes are bigger than the X5 xDrive40i which are rated at 15-inch at front and 14.8-inch at the rear, we are sure that the 2020 xDrive50i is the class leader in sheer dimensions. Maserati Levante and Porsche Cayenne have similarly sized brake rotors.

2020 BMW X5 M50i SUV Fuel Economy

The efficient 8-Speed Automatic transmission plays a very important role in providing the impressive numbers which X5 provides. The precise gear timing and quick upshifts help it lower fuel consumption.

BMW manages to chuck out an impressive combined 18 miles to the gallon which is above average in the performance SUV class. This is because if the use of lighter components and less friction in the engine.

Lexus due to its sheer weight loses on efficiency and gives the lowest figures of the lot. Maserati despite having the smaller V6, slips behind the bimmer. But Porsche, on the other hand, fares a bit better with the same engine structure. So, it all boils down to efficient engineering.

2020 BMW X5 M50i SUV Interior

2020 X5 M50i is filled with luxury, comfort and top-notch quality materials. Cabin space is lavish for adults with the first and second rows making you feel contented with comfort. But the third optional row is at best for children. It is smart of BMW to make it optional, otherwise, it would have been a waste of space.

The materials used in X5 are as usual if the highest caliber. No complaints at all. The driver gets a power-adjustable seat with lumbar and bolster adjustments as well. The memory feature will help you keep the perfect sitting position at the click of a button. A double-pane moonroof makes stargazing mesmerizing. Customizable ambient lighting can change your mood.

The X5's seating is luxurious for a Sporty SUV

The X5 also has a list of optional luxury features which makes it feel like a high-end luxury SUV. But these options also demand a much higher premium. If that is not a concern for you then you can enjoy features like massaging seats, remote start, soft close doors, and a heated steering wheel.

What are the infotainment perks?

BMW’s iDrive system is one of the most intuitive and easy to use among any automakers. The interface is as simple as it gets and you will get used to all of its features in no time. Unlike Mercedes-Benz, it doesn’t frustrate you with clustered UI or a singular input point.

Gesture controls can be used to control the system but are less intuitive than the good old touch. A rotary knob can also be used to control the infotainment system.

Unfortunately, BMW has still not added Android Auto Capability. Apple CarPlay is available but requires an annual fee. Harsh sunlight will not hamper the view as well.

Infotainment Features

  • 12.3-inch Infotainment Screen
  • HiFi Sound System with 10 Speakers and 205-watt digital Amplifier
  • HD Radio with “multicast” FM Station Reception
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio Compatible
  • Am/FM Stereo with Radio Data System (RDS)
  • Apple CarPlay Compatible
  • Enhanced Smartphone Connectivity

How much cargo can the 2020 X5 take?

The X5 offers generous cargo space. There are additional hooks and storage space for small items that can fly about in the huge space. Even with the optional third seat, X5 returned a decent 11 cubic feet.

Praise-worthy cargo space in the 2020 BMW X5 M50i

The 40-20-40 second split row can fold down flat to provide of a whopping 1870 liters of cargo space. Well, we couldn’t decide on what to do with this much space!

The edgy exterior hues adds to the X5 M50i's character

The front and rear bumpers house aerodynamic design elements along with the impressive aero curtain in the kidney grille. This helps reduce the drag coefficient drastically and make the 2020 X5 an aerodynamic machine. Hidden flaps behind the kidney grille open up when the gush of air increases. This also helps keep the engine cool during long runs.

Lexus is the elephant in the room with gigantic propositions, Porsche Cayenne coupe is the smallest but the lightest SUV is the Maserati Levante with its smaller engine.

2020 BMW X5 M50i SUV Competition

BMW X5 vs Maserati Levante

The Italian Marque has delivered us with a rather beautiful looking SUV. It has a potent 3.0L V6 engine which is quite powerful and the suspension setup enhances comfort. The interior is extremely customizable as well. But the size takes away a lot of interior space. The bimmer delivers all of this with a much more roomier cabin and a much more powerful V8. All of this for a price less than the Maserati Levante, we would never resist the 2020 BMW X5.

2020 Maserati Levante

BMW X5 vs Lexus LX 570

The LX 570 is a humongous car which makes the X5 look small. It has a very striking design and is powered by a monstrous 5.7L V8. It has a very well stacked cabin high on features. But the Lexus fails miserably in driving dynamics and performance. The inefficient engine is very thirsty as well. The bimmer, on the other hand, has a smaller but much more powerful engine, is fun and involving to drive and costs a whopping $10,230 less. We would unsee the Lexus just by the price difference, let alone the superior features.

2020 Lexus LX 570

BMW X5 vs Porsche Cayenne

Porsche Cayenne is the only car of the lot, which is cheaper than the bimmer. It has exceptional levels of handling and the build quality is top-notch. But the marginal advantage in price does not justify the not so marginal power difference of 121 horses and 147-pound feet of torque. It has a very cramped interior as well. The X5 outshines in all the aspects and delivers a bang for buck SUV which we cannot resist.

2020 Porsche Cayenne

2020 BMW X5 M50i SUV Final Verdict

2020 BMW X5 is a wholesome car with a precise amount of performance, driving dynamics, and comfort. It manages to offer an experience which the competition struggles at coping with. It obliterates the competition just with performance figures and it doesn’t compromise on handling while doing so. The X5 has bowled us over and we just can’t get over this wonderful machine.
