The X5 packs in a sporty performance and optimum luxury. The 2021 BMW X5 comes with a choice between a 3.0L Inline 6 Cylinder turbocharged engine, that breathes out 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torques and a 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V6 engine, which powers the performance versions.

The X5 creates a perfect balance between performance and luxury. Being a beemer, it is also a driving oriented vehicle, that focuses more on the performance and handling. The X5 is a direct rival to the likes of Acura MDX and the Land Rover Discovery.

2021 BMW X5 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The BMW X5 is a big, spacious and a practical vehicle. It is comfortable on long hauls and manageable in the city traffic. The beemer also is one reliable piece of machinery and is comparatively easy to maintain. But how is it to live with an X5 on a daily basis? Let's find out.

Reliability and Ownership Cost

The BMW X5 scored 78 out 100 points in terms of reliability in J.D.Power ratings. 78 is a decent score for an SUV with the aesthetics of the X5. In the spirit of a true BMW, the X5 scores 86 out of 100 for the Driving Experience and 72 out of 100 for Quality and Reliability. BMW also has a proven and widespread dealership network, which gives the X5 score of 78 out of 100. Overall experience of owning a BMW X5 is rather brilliant. Just keeping a tab of the vehicle essentials like oil and coolant, the engine barely requires any kind of major repairs.

The 2021 BMW X5 will also have a starting price just a shy under $60,000. The cost of a vehicle is different for individual states because of the regulation of taxes, geographical location and other costs like delivery charges. The average sales tax across the US is about 5% as it differs from 3% to 8% from state to state. However, people from Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire, Atlanta and Delaware enjoy the best prices as the sales taxes are exempted from these states.

2021 BMW X5 Buying Advice

We recommend the BMW X5 xDrive40i is the perfect choice. You get the efficient 3.0L Inline 6 Cylinder engine under the hood and the xDrive all-wheel-drive setup, which gives the X5 a utilitarian edge. Moreover, it comes as standard with all the luxurious and modern features like Apple CarPlay. BMW also offers different additional packages with the X5, that for an additional cost, can add much more value to the package.

Is buying a used BMW X5 a good idea?

Buying a used BMW X5 can be a tedious task. As per the survey, the 2015, 2016 and 2017 are the best options, in case you want to go for a used BMW X5. The X5 received a major update for the 2019 model year, which also marked the starting of the 4th generation. The reliability of the X5 is out of the question as it can be witnessed by a 78 out of 100 reliability score from J.D.Power.

A 2017 BMW X5 in a mint condition can be fetched for about $35,000, however, using the Car Indigo database, you can find some really lucrative deals. Also, you can get a great deal on a used BMW X5 and end up saving quite some money as well.

2021 BMW X5 Engine and Performance

8.5/10

The 2021 BMW X5, just like the 2020 version, gets a choice between two different engines, i.e. a 3.0L Inline 6 Cylinder engine, which is turbocharged and powers the sDrive40i and xDrive40i variants. The power can be sent either to the rear two wheels or all the 4 wheels depending on individual preference. The second engine is a 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 power plant that powers the xDrive50i, which is a more performance oriented engine of the lot.

The 3.0L Turbocharged Inline 6 engine, pumps out 335 hp @ 5,500 revs. The X5 as standard is offered with an 8-Speed Automatic Transmission and offers 330 lb-ft of torques. The 3.0L power plant can be used to power either the rear wheels or all the 4 wheels.

Although the 2021 X5 has not been crash tested by NHTSA and IIHS yet, considering the previous year ratings, we are confident that the latest iteration will still have the same level of safety ratings. The 4th generation of X5 received a 5 star rating and Top Safety Pick + from IIHS. Along with all the structural integrity, the X5 also comes loaded with a plethora of safety equipment as standard.

Some of the noteworthy safety features of the 2021 BMW X5 are:

  • Driver and Passenger Front Airbags with dual-stage deployment
  • Front and Rear Head Protection System(HPS) with side-impact airbags
  • Automatic Locking Retractors(ALR) on all passenger-seat safety belts

  • Front Safety Belts with automatic Pre-tensioners

2021 BMW X5 Competition

9.6/10

2021 BMW X5 Vs Acura MDX

The Acura MDX is a worthy competitor to the BMW X5. They are offered in the same price segment and come with loads of features as standard. The MDX is offered with a 3.5L Naturally Aspirated V6 engine as compared to the 3.0L Inline 6 cylinder turbocharged engine. However, the Beemer feels more performance oriented and technologically sound than the MDX.

2020 Acura MDX SUV

2021 BMW X5 Vs Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery feels more rugged and in all cases a better choice when you want to take things off the road. The Discovery gets a 3.0L Supercharged V6 engine and more gadgets to play with, while on the move. The Beemer feels more civilized than the Discovery and comes out as a better daily driver than the Discovery.

2020 Land Rover Discovery

2021 BMW X5 Final Verdict

The engineers of BMW really know about their stuff. The 2021 BMW X5 is a technically sound car that is practical to use as a daily driver and feels comfortable on the long haul. It is powered by a 3.0L Turbocharged I-6 engine and packs enough grunt. Moreover, it can carry 5 adults comfortably and also gets enough cargo space. The 2021 BMW X5 is expected to have a starting price of $59,380 and is expected to be launched by the end of the year 2020.

Drives very good and I do not have any complaints. Mine has V8 rather than regular straight 6 which is the reason for that improved 4.6 s to 60mph(I was never able to achieve though :p ) figure. The power and agility to take me almost anywhere I can think of, thats what my BMW X5 is capable of, or maybe even more who knows. I've only owned this for less than a month and I'm enjoying every inch of it. BMW, please provide choices for performance wheels as well.
