BMW has been around for a very long time. Long enough that they have learned how to make a perfect car. Almost that is. The 2020 BMW X3 was already a fast, comfortable, practical and capable car. With the X3 M40i, BMW makes a statement. They have added more performance to the already great practicality that the X3 offers. When it comes to looks, the M40i looks more mean and aggressive than ever before.

We all know what the X3 M has to offer, it is an outright monster when it comes to performance. BMW has slotted the X3 M40i somewhere between the X3 and the X3 M and rightly so. With the M40i, they have filled the gap between a family SUV and a performance-oriented SUV.

The X3 first came out in 2003. Fast forward fifteen years and BMW came out with the third generation of the X3 in 2018. Over these years, a lot has changed, people are craving for SUVs. Every major auto manufacturer is flooding the market with new models and BMW is no exception. The X3 offers way better handling, ride quality and practicality than the SUVs of the last generation.

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i is powered by a 3-liter twin-scroll inline-6 engine mated to an 8-speed “STEPTRONIC” gearbox. This setup is capable of producing a maximum of 355 horsepower. BMW has placed the X3 M40i against likes of the Mercedes AMG GLC43, the Audi SQ5, and the Porsche Macan S.

What do we recommend?

There is only one trim on offer. Having said that, BMW offers plenty of configuration options to make your X3 unique. These options do add up to the price of the vehicle, however, some of them are worth opting for.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Engine and Performance

8.1/10

The BMW X3 M40i is powered by a 3 liter inline 6 engine assisted by a “twin-scroll” setup. The powerhouse is mated to an 8 speed “STEPTRONIC” automatic transmission. This more powerful version of the X3 is capable of producing a maximum of 355 horsepower at 5500rpm. In terms of torque, the BMW can generate a maximum of 369lb-ft at a very low 1520rpm. This wide power band makes the X3 M40i a very easy car to drive in traffic and a comfortable highway cruiser.

The BMW X3 M40i is powered by a 3-liter inline-6 engine assisted by a “twin-scroll” turbo setup.

The engine feels relatively relaxed and at ease all through the rev range. You could be doing 40 miles an hour in the city or 80 on the highway, the M40i feels fairly at ease. The power delivery feels linear- the twin-scroll turbocharger setup removes any sudden power surge. The 8-speed gearbox goes through all the gears smoothly and quickly.

All the vehicles in this group are powered by a 3-liter 6-cylinder engine. The BMW and the Audi are powered by an 8-speed automatic transmission whereas the Merc and Porsche are equipped with a 9 speed and a 7-speed unit respectively. In terms of power, all the vehicles are evenly matched. The Mercedes AMG GLC 63 produces 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque which is a lot for an SUV. The AMG is followed by the BMW in terms of numbers. Then comes the Audi at 349hp followed by the Porsche at 348 horsepower.

How fast is the BMW X3 M40i?

For an SUV the acceleration shouldn't really matter all that much. Having said that, it actually matters for these sporty powerful SUVs. The 3-liter turbocharged inline-6 motor manages to push the BMW to 60MPH from a standstill in a mere 4.8 seconds. This might not seem all that impressive but once you take the dimensions of the Bimmer into consideration, you’ll realize that it is plenty quick. The quarter-mile comes in at an impressive 13.4 seconds. So, if somehow you do decide to take your X3 M40i to the dragstrip you know what to expect.

When it comes to comparing these vehicles, not a lot can be said. The BMW and the Merc take 4.8 seconds to reach the 60 miles an hour mark. The Audi and the Porsche cross the 60 MPH mark in 5.1 seconds. As fas the quarter-mile times are concerned, the BMW and the Mercedes have similar times - 13.4 seconds. The Audi is one-tenth of a second slower at 13.5 seconds. However, the Porsche Macan S is the fastest of them all at 13.2 seconds.

What about the ride quality?

The 2020 BMW X3 offers a very calm and composed ride on almost every terrain. The car feels planted all the time. The suspensions manage to soak up most of the bumps and even big impacts. Without the dynamic taking care of choices, this X3 isn't as adept at handling bends as you would anticipate. It can even now be driven with direct energy and hold its level-headedness, yet with its all-season run-punctured tires, this BMW SUV inclines more "utility" than "sport."

The 2020 BMW X3 offers a very calm and composed ride on almost every terrain.

The X3's steering is light and direct, however, it feels a little nervous at higher speeds. This makes a dubious on-focus feel and requires more push to keep up a curve through any street with a level of twist. An odd deficit for BMW. All in all, if you want an SUV with a comfortable ride, the standard X3 might be a better option. However, if you want an SUV that offers a small touch of "sportiness", the X3 M40i might be the one to go for.

How's the braking system on BMW X3 M40i?

With all the weight these small luxury SUVs carry, it is imperative that they are equipped with brakes that complement the other aspects of the vehicle. The 2020 BMW X3 M40i is equipped with 13.7-inch rotors in the front and 13.5-inch rotors in the rear. These brakes manage to bring the M40i to a complete stop from 60 MPH in 112 feet. This, when compared to the stock X3, is pretty good.

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i Brake Rotors

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i is equipped with ventilated discs all around. Ventilated discs help in better heat dissipation that adds to the composite brake discs in the front. The M40i also get blue BMW "M" branded brake calipers on all four corners. It is also equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control, and brake pad wear indicators.

At 14.2 inches the Mercedes and the Porsche have the largest front brake rotors in this group. They are accompanied by 12.6 and 13-inch rotors at the rear. The Merc offers the best braking performance in this bunch which could be mainly due to its lower weight when compared to the other vehicles. The Bimmer stands at par with the Porsche and the Audi.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

This segment of small luxury SUVs is meant for hauling kids and families around. Having said that, this one’s not. The 2020 BMW X3 M40i returns 21 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. If you're looking for something that could go across the state in one tankful of gas, the X3 M40i might not be the one for you.

In terms of outright fuel economy, none of these vehicles are exactly "fuel-efficient"- with performance, comes a dip in the fuel economy. The BMW performs the best in this bunch. The Mercedes is slightly better than the Audi and the Porsche in terms of fuel economy. There is still not a lot to differentiate the vehicles.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Interior

8.2/10

Being a small luxury SUV, a lot is expected from the X3 in terms of space and comfort. However, it offers plenty of space and comfort to all the passengers. The front seats offer plenty of adjustment including lumbar support. All of these adjustments also make finding the ideal driving position very easy. The most impressive part is the fact that even the seat bolsters can be adjusted depending on the need. The bolsters can be raised enough to hold you in position even through quick long turns and for when you just want to cruise on the freeway, these bolsters loosen up.

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i Rear Seats

The rear seats offer plenty of comfort as well. BMW has cut no corners when it comes to interior quality. Even the rear seats have the best of materials all over. The rear bench can seat three abreast, however, longer journeys might prove to be a little upsetting for the one sitting in the middle. The bench also offers enough under-thigh support. In terms of general ambience, the X3's cabin in a nice place to be in.

In terms of ride quality, it is on a slightly stiffer side. Having said that, it is not as still as some of the outright performance SUVs. The ride is still very comfortable even for a very long drive. Vibrations are controlled inside the cabin but some amount of wind noise can be heard from around the ORVMs.

When it comes to numbers related to the interior space, the Audi offers the most amount to space to both the front and the rear passengers. This can be attributed mainly due to the boxy shape of the vehicle. All these vehicles can easily carry five on a short trip but the rear middle passenger might feel a little uncomfortable on longer journeys. The exact interior dimensions of the Macan are not available, however, it is expected to be at par with the rest of the competition.

What about the Infotainment system?

BMW’s iDrive system is probably one of the best in the business. It offers a very smooth and slick interface with adequately responsive touch feedback. What adds to the experience is the rotary dial which makes using the system while driving very easy. This system offers so many features that it might actually take some time for you to get used to all of them. And even after that, some features would always feel extra. The screen sits on top of the dashboard which makes it fall directly in the line of sight- the driver doesn't need to take his eyes off the road in order to use the infotainment system.

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i Infotainment system

The most disappointing thing about this infotainment system is the lack of Android Auto support. BMW offers Apple CarPlay support but wait- it is not free. The first year is free and then it costs $300 per year. The front row offers a couple of USB ports and both the rows offer one 12-volt socket. Here is the other list of features on offer.

  • Apple CarPlay Compatibility with 1-year trial
  • BMW TeleServices
  • ConnectedDrive Services
  • USB audio connection and hands-free Bluetooth including audio streaming
  • BMW Concierge Services
  • BMW Connected App
  • Real-Time Traffic
  • Stolen Vehicle Recovery
  • Remote Door Unlock

What about the Cargo capacity?

Even for a small luxury SUV, the cargo capacity matters a lot. The BMW X3 offers 28.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Considering the class and size of the vehicle, it is actually pretty impressive. The rear seats can be folded down to release around 62 cubic feet of cargo volume. The already impressive numbers feel even more impressive once you take into consideration the level of performance the X3 M40i offers.

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i 28.7 Cu.Ft. Cargo Space

What adds to the cargo capacity is the comparatively lower load height. The underfloor storage is very limited due to the full-size spare wheel on offer. The cargo area is pretty wide and the squared shape adds to the practicality. The tie-down hooks on either side of the cargo area also help the cause. The rear seats also fold down almost completely flat which makes it easier to slide cargo to the front of the vehicle.

The X3’s cargo capacity is really impressive and the other vehicles in this segment fail to match that. The Audi SQ5 gets the closest with 25.1 cubic feet. Both the GLC 43 and the Macan S offer 17.6 cubic feet of storage. The X3 also offers the most squared trunk the segment that makes it pretty easy for it to be filled completely.

What are the Creature comforts on offer?

There are plenty of features onboard the 2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV. Some of the most notable highlights include the following

  • 10-way power front sport seats including 2-way power side bolsters, with 2-way manual headrests and memory system for driver's seat
  • Automatic 3-zone climate control
  • 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Exterior

7.0/10

In the front, the X3 boasts BMW’s signature “Kidney Grille” but now, it's active. This means that the grille opens and closes based on the engine’s needs and requirements. It makes for a very neat party trick. With the 2020 models, BMW has received a lot of flak for the massive grilles but on the X3, the size is just perfect. It might not be the best looking car out there but it is definitely a handsome one. The M Sport body kit compliments the performance of the vehicle very efficiently.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Third Quarter View

In terms of size, the X3 slots right in between the BMW X1 and the X5. It measures up a total of 185.9 inches in length and 74.4 inches in width. The 8 inches of ground clearance add to the daily drivability of the vehicle. And in case you decide to take your X3 M40i off-road, scraping your front splitter won't be the first thing you'd worry about.

The ground clearance is very impressive at 8 inches- enough to go over most of the obstacles. The wheelbase is also plenty which means more room for the passengers. The SQ5 is the heaviest of the bunch which affects its off-road capability. The X3 is the longest of the bunch and the tallest. The Merc has the longest wheelbase which is pretty evident on the inside as well.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Safety

8.0/10

When it comes to safety, not everyone can beat the Germans. The BMW offers a ton of safety features and all of those features work perfectly. However, Volvo manages to beat its competition narrowly when it comes to safety features and their implementation. The 2020 BMW X3 has not been rated by the NHTSA or the IIHS yet. But based on previous years' data and the crash tests of other BMW vehicles, it can be expected to perform pretty well.

What are the standard Safety features on offer?

  • Front and rear Head Protection System (HPS)
  • Active Protection System
  • Fatigue and Focus Alert feature
  • Impact sensor
  • Adaptive Brake lights
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Anti-theft alarm system
  • BMW Assist eCall includes Emergency Request (SOS button)
  • Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Competition

BMW X3 M40i vs Audi SQ5

A lot cannot be said to differentiate between the X3 M40i and the Audi SQ5. They are offered at a similar price and they offer similar performance. Even in terms of handling and ride quality, the Bimmer and the Audi are well matched. Both BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s all-new MMI are powerful enough to launch a nuke.

BMW X3 M40i vs Mercedes AMG GLC43

The Mercedes AMG GLC43 is one of the most dynamic and fun to drive SUVs on sale today. It offers more punch than the BMW and is more fun to drive. In a straight line, the Bimmer and the Merc cannot be separated. When it comes to interior tech, again, both BMW’s iDrive and Mercedes’s COMAND are very impressive.

BMW X3 M40i vs Porsche Macan S

Porsche makes one of the sportiest vehicles on the face of the earth. The Macan S is no exception. It is probably the only vehicle in this bunch that can carve canyons like a piece of cake. It is also the quickest in this bunch but at the same time, it is also the most expensive. In terms of tech, just like others, Porsche’s infotainment is also very slick and advanced. What makes the biggest impact for the Porsche is the 7-speed PDK. The PDK has to be one of the most advanced transmissions in the world. Where the Porsche loses out the most on is the practicality.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Final Verdict

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i is an amazing car. It offers the practicality of the X3 with power on tap. If you are looking for a full out sports SUV, BMW has the X3 M on offer. But if you are looking for a daily driver that can go pretty fast, the X3 M40i is the one to go for.
