Probably one of the popular cars in the compact luxury crossover SUV segment, the BMW X3 was always known for its elegant interiors and its unique driving dynamics. Although the BMW X3 was introduced to the world in 2003, the M version was introduced to us just last year, which is based on the 3rdgeneration X3 introduced for the 2018 model year.

Tuned and perfected by BMW’s tuning division, the X3 M is a sportier and aggressive version of the regular BMW X3. Although it looks like an SUV, the BMW X3 is actually based on the 3 Series platform and it feels more at home on the tarmac rather than getting dirty off-road. But don’t get it wrong, the BMW X3 is also very capable off-road as well. Hence, BMW markets it as the “Sports Activity Vehicle”.

The 2021 BMW X3 M is also based on the 3rdgeneration X3 and isn’t getting any significant changes from the 2020 model, if at all. The Wi-Fi hotspot feature has been made standard for the 2021 model. With a starting MSRP of $69,900, it competes with other very capable compact sports SUVs in the market like the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, Audi SQ5, Porsche Macan Turbo, etc.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Germans are synonymous with their precision build quality and tremendous reliability, and the BMW X3 M is no exception. But since the X3 M is a performance variant of the normal BMW X3, it is a bit more expensive than the normal X3 in terms of ownership and maintenance.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Since the BMW X3 M is a fairly recent car, it hasn’t been rated by J.D. Power yet. Nonetheless, the normal 2020 BMW X3 managed to score a decently high score of 82 out of 100 in quality and reliability in the J.D. Power reports and the 2021 BMW X3 M should also be more or less in the same ballpark.

In terms of ownership costs, the BMW X3 M is quite a bit more expensive than the normal X3 with all those performance upgrades, and hence quite a bit more expensive to maintain as well. On an average, you will have to shell out roughly about $75,000 in 5 years when you buy a brand new X3 M. This is not a surprise being an up-market sporty luxury SUV with tremendous performance capability. But the X3 does tend to depreciate in value quite quickly, with the 2020 X3 scoring a below-average score of 73 out of 100 in terms of resale value in the J.D. Power reports.

The average price paid for the 2020 BMW X3 M is about $65,035. The people from Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Atlanta, and Delaware enjoy the lowest prices as they have exempted the sales taxes.

Considering the fact that the 2020 BMW X3 M already had six recalls but with only a single complaint from a customer regarding an issue in the car, it does raise some questions about the quality control of BMW, which is quite surprising for a German luxury automaker.

Warranty

The 2021 BMW X3 M is backed up by your regular array of limited warranties, typical for any luxury German automaker.

Criteria

Period

BMW Ultimate Care

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Roadside Assistance Program

4 years/ unlimited miles

Rust Perforation Limited Warranty

12 years/ unlimited miles

Although the warranty might not be the best in the market, it is also quite good at the same time and is comparable to its competitors at this price range.

Miles Per Dollar

Considering driving for 15,000 miles per year on average, miles per dollar for the BMW X3 M stands roughly in the neighborhood of 1 mile per dollar.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Buying Advice

Without any choice in terms of trim levels, you are stuck with only one choice for the 2021 BMW X3 M. But you can personalize your car with the available packages for the 2021 BMW X3 M. For instance, the Competition Package includes a more powerful engine with a plethora of performance upgrades. The Driver Assistance Plus Package adds some features that make driving easier and less stressful.

And lastly, the Executive Package adds a plethora of luxury features to make the already upscale SUV feel even more upscale and luxurious. Out of the available packages, the Competition Package is a must consider the fact that the BMW X3 M is a performance SUV, and you should go all out with the performance department if you are considering buying the 2021 BMW X3 M.

The Executive Package is also a good option to consider if you want to fully spec the interior of the car with the decent selection of convenience features included in the package.

Is buying a used car BMW X3 M a good idea?

Considering the fact that the BMW X3 M is a fairly recent car with its launch being just last year, there’s not a lot of choice for it in the used car market. But the fact that the BMW X3 depreciates quite a lot in the automotive market suggests that it could be a good investment in the future, especially due to the fact that German cars are built like a tank and have tremendous reliability as well. So if the BMW X3 M has been well maintained and regularly serviced, you could consider buying a used X3 M without any issues.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Engine and Performance

9.1/10

The 2021 BMW X3 M is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo Inline-6 engine under the hood producing 473 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Competition Package includes a tuned version of the same engine that increases the power output to 503 horsepower.

In terms of competition, the 2021 BMW X3 M is one of the most powerful of the bunch, with only the Merc overtaking it in terms of torque.

2021 BMW X3 M Acceleration And Braking Performance

The 3.0L twin-turbo Inline-6 in the 2021 BMW X3 M is mated to an 8-speed M Sport automatic transmission. It has Sport and Manual shift modes along with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The 2021 BMW X3 M also has launch control as well, which is capable of catapulting the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, which is crazy for a car its size. The Competition Package with a more powerful engine should be even quicker. All that power is put onto the tarmac with an M-tuned xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

 2021 BMW X3 M SUV accelerate 0-60 mph in 4.1 sec

With regards to the brakes in the car, the 2021 BMW X3 M is equipped with an M Compound 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes (ABS) with cross-drilled rotors and blue-painted calipers.

The 2021 BMW X3 M has similar performance figures with most of its competitors. The Audi is the underperformer of the bunch, but it also costs quite a bit less than its competition.

Moreover, the more torque in Merc helps it get off the line more quickly than the BMW, but the additional horsepower in the BMW helps it cross the quarter-mile quicker than the Merc.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Being a performance-oriented version of the normal X3, fuel economy is not something where you would have high expectations. It gets 14 miles to the gallon in the city which kicks up to 19 on the highway. A more powerful engine along with a plethora of performance upgrades do drink up a lot of fuel. However, this is a sacrifice you have to make to get the additional horses and performance out of your engine.

Although somewhat similar in terms of fuel economy, the BMW is the least economical of the bunch, which is quite obvious from the power output from the engine of the BMW.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Interior

7.5/10

With competition from other compact luxury SUVs in the market, especially the Merc-AMG GLC 63, the interior of the BMW X3 M might look a bit bland but it is very driver-focused nonetheless. With premium materials all around and a decent list of standard and optional luxury and comfort features, the interior of the BMW X3 M is overall a very nice place to be in.

7.0/10

The exterior of the 2021 BMW X3 M remains the same as the 2020 model. Although the looks of a car being a very subjective term, the BMW X3 M is a very good looking car overall. Being a performance SUV, it does its part in looking like a sporty SUV without being too flashy at the same time.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Safety

8.5/10

Although the BMW X3 M hasn’t been crash-tested by NHTSA yet, the regular 2020 BMW X3 has been tested, and it managed to score a perfect score of 5 out of 5 with 5 stars in all the individual tests, except the Rollover test where it got 4 out of 5 stars with a rollover risk of 17.10%. That being said, the X3 M is also expected to be just as safe as the regular X3.

Some of the highlight active and passive safety features of the 2021 BMW X3 M include:

  • Frontal Collision Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rollover sensor that triggers airbags and safety-belt pretensioners in the event of a rollover
  • Automatic City Collision Mitigation and Braking
  • Adaptive Brake Lights
  • Fatigue and Focus Alert feature
  • BMW Assist eCall includes Emergency Request (SOS button) and Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification

The 2021 BMW X3 M is equipped with a host of advanced driving aids and safety features to keep its occupants as safe as possible.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Competition

7.5/10

2021 BMWX3 M vs 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

Originating from Germany, both the SUVs give tough competition to each other. The Merc is more of a hooligan of a car and quite possibly be more enjoyable to drive than the BMW, as the driver needs to be more involved while driving the Merc.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

Although a bit low on power, the Merc produces more torque than the BMW which makes it the faster car in terms of 0-60 time. Moreover, the Merc has a better fuel economy rating as well.

2021 BMW X3 M vs 2020 Audi SQ5

Although not quite a direct competitor to the BMW X3 M, the Audi SQ5 is a pretty decent performance SUV nonetheless. Costing quite a bit less than its competitors, it is quite low on power and performance as well.

2020 Audi SQ5

But it doesn’t matter as much as the Audi is a perfect SUV to have a little fun while driving and to experience owning a performance SUV without spending a fortune on it.

2021 BMW X3 M vs 2020 Porsche Macan Turbo

Both the BMW X3 M and the Porsche Macan Turbo are very similarly matched cars with very similar performance figures as well. Although the BMW might outperform the Porsche in a drag race, the Macan should be the better car around corners which its precision handling and nimbleness no other SUV could match. So at the end of the day, it all boils down to personal preference.

2020 Porsche Macan Turbo

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Final Verdict

A very good option in the world of compact luxury crossover SUV, the 2021 BMW X3 M holds its own value proposition in the performance SUV segment. That being said, there are other very capable performance SUVs out there in the market having their own unique characteristics and advantages and could quite possibly give the BMW a run for its money.

Nonetheless, the BMW X3 M could be argued to be one of the more balanced performance SUVs out there and the car can behave tamed and composed when you want it to. The ride quality is quite stiff compared to the regular X3 nonetheless, which could be a bit of a nuisance in long journeys.

The first time I drove my X3M, I wanted to hit highway to enjoy every single hp out of those 473 and BMW didn't disappoint me. As soon as I was able to hit gas to the fullest, and within a matter of seconds and it was cruising over 100mph. BMW has always been known about the jaw dropping performance in their cars and I can't agree more on that since I bought this lovely piece of automotive engineering home.

503 hp under the hood with launch control. Ability to throw you back kind of acceleration which takes 4 seconds to reach 60 mph, this beastly looking BMW X3M is actually a crossover but nothing less than a sports car in terms of power and acceleration. Great handling response. Takes a millisecond to think when I hit the gas and then I just hold on to steering wheel as hard as I can. Happens naturally.
