The 2022 BMW X3 is a luxury compact SUV that marked the entry of BMW’s family of utilitarians as a result of BMW’s corporate brainstorming for an alternative to the X5. Subsequently, BMW launched the X1 and X2 to expand their range, but we feel that the X3 is the smallest member worthy of the suffix- SUV or as BMW calls it, the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). Based on the BMW 3 Series, BMW CLAR platform, the X3 ranks near the top of the luxury crossover SUVs due to its ample of cargo space as well as precise handling.

Thus the X3 is one of the most popular models in BMW's lineup, with sales in the United States topping 70,000 units last year. Not much will be changed for 2022 and the SUV will remain as robust as ever. However, the design could see some changes which might or might not be inspired from the new BMW 4 Series. Still, it will be a part of the third-generation BMW X3 with a mid-cycle refresh for 2022 model year. Expected changes include an updated exterior design and possibly a new infotainment unit. Let’s see how everything else will be like with the newer BMW X3.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The X3 is one of the most popular models in BMW's lineup and the brand is planning on refreshing the car for the 2022 model year. It is expected to offer a refreshed exterior design and subtle interior tweaks. But if you plan on waiting for the newer model, do not expect any major changes.

2022 BMW X3 Pricing and Features

For the 2022 model year, the BMW X3 will be offered in the same trim as the current 2021 model. This means that you will again get only one trim with the X3 which will be offer with either a RWD or an AWD. Thus, the X3 sDrive30i will be the cheaper trim with the RWD and the X3 xDrive30i will be offered with a AWD configuration. The M-Performance X3 M40i will also join the line-up which has been covered in a separate review.

The 2022 BMW X3 will be offered with a ton of advanced high-tech features and safety technology. However, a major change in the standard features list is not expected.

2022 BMW X3 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

BMW has never been in the top lists when it comes to reliability. However, it does not mean that it makes unreliable cars. With newer and newer models on the roads we can see an improvement in terms of reliability. However, we still suspect that the 2022 model will also go through a couple of recalls if major changes are made.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

A machine from the BMW’s stable has never been known to cost cheap or offer cheap maintenance. This however can be said for most German car manufacturers who offer luxury cars with the most cutting edge features. Thus, same can be expected from the 2022 model year. However, you would be happy to not that the 2021 model year of the BMW X3 was featured in the 4th position in KBB’s top 10 small luxury SUVs. J.D. Power too gave it a healthy score of 79 out of 100. This means that the car has largely remained quite reliable as well.

Warranty

The 2022 BMW X3 will continue to offer the same warranty package as the current model and other BMW cars. It will be offered with a limited warranty coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles which can be extended at an extra cost.

BMW’s Ultimate Care warranty service provides you a limited warranty plan of 4 years/50000 miles that is industry-standard for most SUVs out there. To spice up the deal, BMW grants you 3 years or 36000 miles complimentary scheduled maintenance to eliminate the expenses on maintenance and repairs. Corrosion perforation coverage extends to a length 12-year period for unlimited distance. You can also stay stress-free with the 24/7 roadside assistance plan that runs up to 4 years for infinite mileage.

When you consider the ownership costs, owning a new BMW X3 won’t feel friendly on your wallet. Depreciation hits the X3 pretty hard and the car loses almost $12000 of its value within the first year of ownership. While its balanced fuel economy may spare you some blushes on the fuel expenses, the average repair and maintenance costs outside the scheduled maintenance plan will be a source of headache. Maintenance and repairs may cost well up to $3500 but BMW’s quick and reliable customer service ensures your car returns to the streets for action in no time.

Criteria

Period

Limited Warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-Hour Roadside Assistance

4 years unlimited

We are glad to report that the 2022 BMW X3 will also offer a 3 years or 36000 miles complimentary scheduled maintenance which will reduce the expenses on costly maintenance and repairs.

Miles per Dollar

Considering the average distance traveled in a year is 15000 miles, for the first 3 years of ownership, you have to incur about $1500. This means that the mile per dollar figure of the BMW X3 is around 10 miles for every dollar spent on it.

2022 BMW X3 Buying Advice

We would recommend you to stick with the X3 xDrive30i as it offers better handling characteristics thanks to the AWD. This makes it much more enjoyable and engaging to drive behind the wheel.

Is buying a used BMW X3 a good idea?

Most BMW cars depreciate quicker than regular non-premium cars. This means that you can buy a used BMW X3 for a much cheaper price which shall offer a better value for your money. Finding a well-maintined X3 is not difficult as most users use these cars for short day to day drives.

2022 BMW X3 Engine and Performance

The 2022 model year of the BMW X3 will be offered with the same powertrain and drivetrain as the current 2021 model year. There are less to no changes expected in the mechanical department of the newer X3.

An SUV needs to fulfill its sporting duties and X3 in its base avatar is anything but exhilarating. The 248 horsepower from its 2.0-liter does provide a not so gentle shove into the seats, but that’s about it. The 258-lb-ft of torque coupled with the 8-speed ZF transmission takes care of the city commutes with ease. We don’t expect any change in terms of engines in the upcoming model.

Moving up the trim ladder, you’ll find the rather ambitious X3 M40i. Powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, this in our opinion is the sweet spot among all the X3s. Power figures are impressive at 382 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.

2022 BMW X3 Acceleration and Braking Performance

The 2022 BMW X3 will be equipped with one of the quickest shiting gearbox in the segment. This means that you will get lighting fast gear changes whenever needed. However, we expect the 2022 model to completed the 0-60 mph run in the same 6 seconds, which the current model is capable of.

As can be seen, the current model is one of the quickest SUVs in its class. However, where it runs out of breath is in the quarter mile run which is the carmaker might work on with its future model.

2022 BMW X3 Ride and Handling

The BMW X3 has never disappointed when it came to its ride and handling characteristics. Its steering offers excellent feedback and feels precise at high speeds. With the 2022 model year, the X3 is expected to remain the same when it comes to its handling dynamics as there will be no changes done to it mechanically. In terms of the ride and comfort, the car is will offer a comfortable ride but will remain on the stiffer side.

2022 BMW X3 Fuel Economy

The engines could remain the same as the current-gen for the 2022 model year. The 2.0L engine under the hood of the 2021 BMW X3 is quite a fuel-efficient motor. It strikes a perfect balance between power and fuel economy. Even if you have a heavy right foot, the X3 will return more than a decent fuel economy, and paired with a fuel tank of 17.2 gallons, this small SUV is a proper mile muncher.

Since the iX3 and PHEV take care of being the fuel-efficient ones in the lineup, the X3 has a breather. According to EPA testing, the X3 is the most fuel-efficient SUV in this comparison. It gets a smaller fuel tank but good fuel economy figures make sure that the Bimmer can cover a lot of ground in one tank.

2022 BMW X3 Interior

The interiors of the BMW X3 have always meant business and has no fancy curves or sharp edges. BMW follows a minimalistic approach while designing the interiors and you can expect the same with the 2022 model year. The keen-eyed amongst you will notice the resemblance to the larger X5 from which the cabin takes the inspiration.

In essence, the X3’s interior is largely a scaled-down version of the X5. BMW has kept it rather simple with a rudimentary infotainment unit and physical buttons. However, we expect a change with the upcoming 2022 model year as a new infotainment unit could end up inside the X3.

How’s the 2022 BMW X3’s infotainment system?

the infotainment system apart from the exteriors is one area where the, 2022 model year of the BMW X3 could see some changes. This does not mean that the current generation’s infotainment is flawed in any way. Thus, BMW could follow the philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?”. We expect the newer model to get the same 10.25-inch touchscreen with a12.3-inch instrument cluster. The interface could however see a major overhaul.

2022 BMW X3 Exterior

Much like the larger and pricier X5, the X3 boasts a lowkey design which, most owners prefer. BMW intends the X3 be used across the corporate world that favors an under-the-radar look over being flashy. The front of the car gets signature kidney grilles with LED headlights on either side. A design upgrade is expected with slight tweaks to the front and rear bumper design for 2022.

Things at the back are fairly simple with no noteworthy highlights. With the 2022 refresh, we expect the design to take a turn and improve by a notch to make it feel upmarket and in line with the current design trends.

2022 BMW X3 Safety

BMW offers the X3 with a host of active safety features that are now offered as standard. Previous X3 models received 5-star ratings from NHTSA so a similar performance can be expected from the 2022 X3 as well. Some of the standard safety features in the current X3 are listed below:

  • Front and rear Head Protection System (HPS)
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights and LED fog lights
  • Dynamic Stability Control
  • Front and rear Park Distance Control
  • Rear-view Camera
  • Active Protection System with Fatigue and Focus Alert feature
  • BMW Assist eCall
  • Active Driving Assistant safety suite including Frontal Collision Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning
  • Anti-theft alarm system
  • Adaptive Brake Lights

2022 BMW X3 Competition

2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 will also undergo minor changer for the 2022 model year. This means that the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines will remain the mainstay of the line-up. In comparison, the GLC feels more opulent on the inside but lacks behind the X3 in terms of agility and performance.

2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 has been quite a popular choice amongst buyers in the compact luxury segment. With its lively performance and oodles of standard features, the Q5 certainly looks more lucrative than the BMW X3. Its better fuel economy also adds to pros list. The X3 manages to beat the Q5 in terms of cabin space as well as perfromance.

2022 BMW X3 Final Verdict

We are yet to receive concrete info about the pricing and release date but, we expect the 2022 X3 to be priced around the $45,000 mark. We look for the updated X3 to go on sale late next year or early 2022. Similar updates should also reflect on the X3 M and the X4. Thus, with respect to the 2022 model year of the X3, we would recommend you not to wait as it will be coming with minimal changes.

All good so far.

Pros - Cushy seating, techy cabin, peppy engine

Cons - Found nothing so far

Perfect compact. Got it for $47,699 with the new year offers. I have not drove this car around a lot and it has only about $2,700 miles on it. For the most part I'm really satisfied with the car. Really comfortable, loaded with tech, easy to drive and perfect size for our garage! Had a bit of a delay with the delivery in the current Covid Scenario but Roger did his best to get the car foe me as soon as possible.

Rather buy an Audi

Pros - Cabin design, easy to drive, spacious

Cons - Controls are not user-friendly, touch screen lags sometimes, design/styling is outdated

Want a German car? Buy an Audi! X3 does have some good driving dynamics but when it comes to practicality it loses out big times. The space in the back is a little cramped up for taller people around heads and legs. On the inside, it behaves more like a small two-seater coupe than a hatch. The infotainment is confusing and the controls are not very well put together. It takes quite a lot of time to get the hang of how to use them. Not only that but the design feels outdated too. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable

2021 X3

Pros - Looks/styling, ride comfort, interior

Cons - Gas mileage

Go for it. The new 2021 version is even more comfortable and responsive than the previous year version. The transmission in BMWs is always fantastic and the same goes true for this one as well as it makes a lot of difference when it comes to driving quality. My favorite has to be the noise-free drive Great cabin space. Feels pretty comfortable no matter where I seat. optional Xline package makes it look different. Driver aids do come with this package. Not sure as of now. Got a few added extras which took the price close to $48,000 Helping staff made me chose the best trim for me
