The 2021 BMW X3 gets a ton of safety and tech features as standard. Apart from the minor feature updates, not much has really changed with the 2021 BMW X3. Why fix if ain't broken though? The outgoing 2020 BMW X3 is already a great machine. It could only be helped with some enhanced feature and tech updates which is what BMW exactly did for 2021.

With its precise composition, the X3 is one of the best contenders of the hot luxury compact SUV which also has participants like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 and even the Volvo XC60. With that being said, let’s look at what is on store onboard the 2021 BMW X3 that helps its stay relevant to the competition.

2021 BMW X3 Features

7.8/10

The 2021 BMW X3 will roll out in two core specs as: the X3 sDrive30i with RWD and the X3 xDrive30i with AWD. We treat the M-Performance X3 M40i and the track-oriented X3 M as separate models instead of trims. The 2021 BMW X3 will be a treasure trove of the latest technologies and comfort elements that would sure brand it as the ‘jack of trade’ of all SUVs.

One of the latest and most awaited additions to the feature list of the 2021 BMW X3 is the Android Auto compatibility. The X3 already had the Apple CarPlay compatibility before, however, the Android Auto was missing. Moreover, the list of features does not end here. The new 2021 X3 also gets an improved Driver Assistance Features, that prove it to be a better value for money.

2021 BMW X3 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

BMW’s stint with reliability has always been a sweet and sour relationship. Some BMW vehicles make up to the mark while other BMWs drown in the burden of recalls and complaints. So how is the reliability factor of the 2021 BMW X3? We take a quick look down here:

Reliability and Ownership Costs

BMW caters to every customer grievances within no time and this quick, reliable customer service has gained some accolades over its reliability. The 2020 BMW X3 featured in the 4th position in KBB’s top 10 small luxury SUVs behind its arch-rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. J.D. Power also gave the 2021 BMW X3 a healthy score of 79 out of 100. There is no question about the X3’s popularity.

The 2021 BMW X3 however, has some critical weak points that it needs to resolve. First of all, almost every competitor offers Android Auto in its tech suite, which ironically the BMW does not. Also, the performance factor is refined and exhilarating but the ride quality can tend to get stiff on some occasions. Also, the diverse flavor of customizations can end up spilling more bucks from your pocket compared to other adversaries. The 2021 BMW X3 redeems itself with its top-notch safety features and immense practicality. It is the most spacious and stylish SUV that you can get for its price tag and BMW gives you scraps of German excellence through its performance and technology.

When you consider the ownership costs, owning a new BMW X3 won’t feel friendly on your wallet. Depreciation hits the X3 pretty hard and the car loses almost $12000 of its value within the first year of ownership. While its balanced fuel economy may spare you some blushes on the fuel expenses, the average repair and maintenance costs outside the scheduled maintenance plan will be a source of headache. Maintenance and repairs may cost well up to $3500 but BMW’s quick and reliable customer service ensures your car returns to the streets for action in no time.

Warranty

The Ultimate Care warranty service of the brand provides the 2021 BMW X3 with a limited warranty plan of 4 years/50000 miles that is industry-standard for most SUVs out there. To spice up the deal, BMW grants you 3 years or 36000 miles complimentary scheduled maintenance to eliminate the expenses on maintenance and repairs. Corrosion perforation coverage extends to a length 12-year period for unlimited distance. You can also stay stress-free with the 24/7 roadside assistance plan that runs up to 4 years for infinite mileage.

Criteria

Period

Limited Warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-Hour Roadside Assistance

4 years unlimited

Volvo offers a similar maintenance service for its XC60 of 3 years period like BMW. BMW’s warranty service is simply among the best in its business and outshines the warranty plans of other German rivals like Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

Miles per Dollar

Consider the average distance traveled in a year by an average US citizen as 15000 miles. For the first 3 years of ownership, you only have to incur the fuel costs of the BMW X3 which equates to $1500 per year.

With this data, we can conclude that the BMW X3 can shell out 10 miles for a dollar’s worth for the 1st 3 years of ownership. After that, this figure is bound to go on a downward trajectory as maintenance and costs start creeping in.

2021 BMW X3 Buying Advice

We recommend opting for the 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i that shines with its homegrown traction controlling AWD technology. For your comfort and convenience, we suggest equipping the Premium package that brings sophisticated features like Live Cockpit Professional-integrated dashboard, a heads-up display, a panoramic moonroof, Connected Package Pro, comfort access keyless entry, heated steering wheel, and lumbar support. All these features come under the $50000 price tag which should be the budget of most buyers while purchasing a mid-size luxury SUV.

Is buying a used BMW X3 a good idea?

The BMW X3’s low resale value means you can settle for a used SUV with not much compromise on the latest features. The 2020 model is almost identical to the upcoming model albeit to some style and interior refreshments. The sDrive30i variant with RWD made its introduction for the 2019 lineup with the inclusion of safety features like driver fatigue monitor, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and many more.

The X3 went through a complete redesign for the 2018 lineup bringing forward more robust engines, touchscreen infotainment, and standard 3-zone automatic climate control. So if you want to stay in touch with the latest technology onboard the X3, we suggest the 2020 variant.

2021 BMW X3 Engine and Performance

8.4/10

The 2021 BMW X3 retains the same turbocharged inline-four unit inside its base X3 SUV that has worked wonders for it in the previous models. The 2.0-liter twinpower turbocharged is BMW’s tried and tested unit which also serves other Bimmers like the X4. Even the 2021 BMW X3 M40i and 2021 BMW X3 M models retain their 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6. Of course, who would dare to replace an energetic inline-6 that strolls around effortlessly in the city and shows its caliber on tough off-road terrain as well?

2021 BMW X3 SUV has 2.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline Four-Cylinder

While the M-powered models are a bit high on the performance part of things, the 2.0-liter pot in the basic X3 does its job pretty well. Churning out 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, the engine feels refined and smooth and the 8-speed auto transmission behaves effortlessly as well. While you do get a hint of turbo lag towards the beginning but that is very well compensated by a motivated mid-range torque supply.

Competition in the segment here is very close among all these mid-size SUVs as the difference between their powertrain capabilities are only marginal. Unfortunately, the BMW X3 lags behind its rival in terms of horsepower and torque. To point out a clear winner, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC trumps everyone else with its class-leading power output.

2021 BMW X3 Acceleration and Braking Performance

BMW’s snappy 8-speed automatic transmission is one of the quickest-clutching in its business with almost zero delay in transmitting the power. This propels the 2021 BMW X3 to 60 MPH from a standstill in just 6 seconds. The X3 clocks in a quarter-mile time of 15.1 seconds which is pretty commendable for a heavy SUV. This powertrain permits the BMW X3 to an electronically limited top speed of 130 MPH.

2021 BMW X3 SUV accelerate 0-60 mph in 6 sec

Even the braking sector is praiseworthy, with Brake Energy Regeneration and other brake assistance features aiding a better braking performance. The BMW X3 comes to a stop from 60 MPH in a distance of 114 feet. The numerous driving modes like Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport can help tweak out the performance and efficiency as per your need.

The BMW X3’s acceleration figures sit in the middle of the chart. Its 0-60 time is an above-average figure while the quarter-mile timing is the slowest of the lot. The Audi Q5’s acceleration figures and braking performance just emerges as the winner by a fine margin.

2021 BMW X3 Ride and Handling

Ride of the 2021 BMW X3 feels as good as it looks. To sum it up best, it's comfortable, poised and confident on almost every occasion. No goosebumps or so like the X3 M or even the X4 M, but the X3 is more tuned towards relaxed and comfortable duties. The rich interior with plenty of space goes very well with the nicely balanced suspension. Though it might not be as friendly as a Porsche Macan, it's still plenty of fun to cruise around. The suspension setup is very lively and is neither too firm nor very soft.

Most of the bumps are soaked very well and the cabin noise remains under fair-check at most of the times. That's only until you hit a large pothole though. However, a nice and comfortable ambience is always ensured inside the cabin. The steering wheel again has a nice heft into it and is communicative enough to allow the driver a good command over the vehicle. The X3 steers through corners with ease and remains firm and composed throughout every arc.

2021 BMW X3 Fuel Economy

8.0/10

You don’t crave an SUV because of its meager fuel economy? The 2021 BMW X3 fuel efficiency is still to look out for. BMW’s emphasis on a more efficient engine pulls out a fuel-efficient beast in the form of the X3 SUV. The 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i is capable of doing 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, with a combined MPG of 26. The BMW X3 sDrive30i which is the RWD variant returns slightly better MPG figures of 25 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway that equates to a combined MPG of 27.

The B48 engine supports clever fuel-saving technologies like direct fuel injection to boost its efficiency. This gimmick might help BMW to attract the cash-savvy audience. With a fuel tank capacity of 17.2 gallons, the 2021 BMW X3 xDrive can shell out a mileage of 413/499/447 miles.

The 2021 BMW X3 makes every competitor taste the dust with its splendid MPG figures and stellar range that proves to be the best in its class. The Volvo XC60 is the closest SUV to the BMW X3 in terms of fuel economy and has the best range in this analysis only because of its larger fuel tank.

2021 BMW X3 Interior

8.2/10

BMW only integrates some modest changes in the 2021 BMW X3 interiors but ensures these little details stand out the most when you catch a first glimpse of the cabin. The entire interior features elegant dark oak wood trimmings that adds a unique charm to the cabin. The dashboard looks ergonomic and technologically sound with the latest driving technology at your fingertips.

The steering wheel position is however higher than other BMWs that could make the driver feel disconnected. The BMW X3 hits back with its comfortable SensaTec leather upholstery, making you fall heads over heels on a luxury SUV again. The front seats are also adjustable by a 10-way power and also include memory functionality.

Practicality is a paramount factor of the 2021 BMW X3 with its commodious trunk capacity of 28.7 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded down, that figure rises to a generous 62.7 cubic feet of cargo space which converts the X3 into essentially a wagon. The Volvo XC60 has the leading trunk capacity of 29.7 cubic feet followed by the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 at 25.1 cubic feet. Mercedes Benz GLC needs to amp up its practicality as it only offers trunk storage of 19.4 cubic feet.

How’s the 2021 BMW X3’s infotainment system?

BMW’s love affair with futuristic technology 2021 BMW X3 continues inside as well. BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind your steering wheel and a high-resolution 10.25-inch touchscreen for infotainment. The digital instrument cluster showcases vehicle information in a diverse flavor right by your line of sight. BMW’s intuitive iDrive 6.0 system powers the infotainment.

2021 BMW X3 SUV infotainment screen

BMW grants you the privilege to control the infotainment by voice, touchscreen, or the iDrive touchpad. Bluetooth, navigation, SiriusXM radio, heads-up display, and 2 USB ports are also a part of the awesome tech suite. BMW integrates a HiFi sound system with a 205-watt digital amplifier and 12 speakers. Audiophiles can upgrade to a lively premium Harman Kardon sound system for that extra bass. However, the inclusion of Apple CarPlay but an absence of Android Auto smartphone integration seems absurd for a car of this stature.

2021 BMW X3 Exterior

8.0/10

The design of the 2021 BMW X3 makes a bold statement with its rugged and commanding design. Although the 2021 model doesn’t vary much from its 2020 predecessor, its bold exteriors indicate it is a force to be reckoned with. Refreshments include a redesigned sculpted kidney grille, Icon Adaptive Full LED headlights, and redesigned bumpers.

  2021 BMW X3 SUV

A dominant off-road personality gives the SUV more flair on the streets and an unnerving presence too. The 2021 BMW X3 is a result of crafty BMW engineering and will be a sight to behold on the streets.  A near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution gives the SUV tremendous agility like a sedan.

2021 BMW X3 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

This classic AutoBahn rivalry extends to the world of SUVs too. Merc has always been the symbol of opulence and class and takes the bragging rights from the BMW in this sector. Its GLC is also mechanically lighter than the X3 and more stylish in the interior aspects.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV

However, the X3 edges the GLC ahead with its quicker acceleration and engaging driver mechanics. Practicality and fuel economy is also the selling point of the BMW X3. Both the SUVs trade blows to each other and it all comes down to brand loyalty.

2021 BMW X3 vs 2021 Audi Q5

Bavarian by blood, but fierce gladiators on the AutoBahn. Audi and BMW’s fierce duel continues with the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. The Ingolstadt-born Audi Q5 has a livelier performance as evidenced by the acceleration charts.

Audi Q5 SUV

However, this compensates for its fuel economy, which is no match to the BMW X3. Audi Q5 sports more standard interior features than the X3 that give it a unique identity and charm. The X3’s practicality turns up big, rightly outclassing the Q5 with its interior space. Both SUVs have their strong talking points and you should buy accordingly based on what you prefer the most.

2021 BMW X3 Final Verdict

The 2021 BMW X3 remains true to its competitive nature with its nimble handling and ride quality. 2021 marks the year where BMW ventures into the all-electric market with the arrival of the iX3.

However, BMW ensures its regular gasoline-powered X3 doesn’t stay shy of any detail, including a wide array of futuristic features and safety aspects. Its practicality and efficiency are unquestionably brilliant and the SUV is an ideal daily ride for customers who are willing to splash the bucks for that German muscle.

Doesn't feel like a BMW.

Pros - Engine works great, transmission is also very smooth. Backseats are very comfy and roomy.

Cons - Suspension, rear design, infotainment

The 2.0L engine is very punchy and has a decent amount of torque as well, but the real highlight of the driving experience is the 8-speed automatic transmission. It is so quick. Ride quality is not the best though. Suspension could have been better as they are not great when it comes to shock absorptions. Gas mileage is satisfactory on the other hand.

A let down from bmw

Pros - Nothing

Cons - Noise inside the cabin even when windows are fully up, engine over heating check light, suspension

Since this is not my first car from bmw, I've never really had any issues in past. 2020 X3 seemed to be a better option since I had a fair amount of good experience with the brand. Unfortunately the 20 model is nothing but a let down. The silent ride quality of bmw is no more a thing now. Even when the windows are rolled fully up, the noise still manages to creep in. I've also had an issue where my engine overheating warning would light up after like 10-12 miles of driving. And if this was not enough, the cabin has started to rattle when going over small droops and the suspension has this creaking sound. All these issues under 4000 miles on the odo, the built quality clearly going to rack and ruin.
