2012 BMW X3 Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

The BMW X3 is the smaller version of the BMW X5. It comes with one engine - a 3.0 liter inline-6 which has two engine outputs, one for each trim. The power goes to the all-wheel drive system and there is no two-wheel-drive option. The interior is sophisticated and spacious, and there are plenty of options that come in the form of packages, some of which increase your comfort while others increase the style of the vehicle. The good part is the car has a good amount of technology and safety ratings. BMW priced the X3 at a starting MSRP of $37,995.

Good choice SUV

Pros - Ride quality, steering and good features

Cons - Distracting infotainment

Best comfortable cabin but a bit disappointment in infotainment system Good handling and steering abilities and the rear seats are good. The cabin space is quiet and spacious which makes good ambience. But the infotainment is undesirable to use as it distracts while driving

Can't be trusted

Pros - Premium inside-out, smooth and powerful ride

Cons - Unsafe, minor regular electrical and electronic fixes

Can't be trusted on safety front My cousin had a X3 and it had issues minor related to electricals and electronics for which he freqently visited the dealers. The most critical issue he faced was the passenger restraint malfunction light coming on. The malfuctioning of passenger occupancy sensor was detected at the dealer and they got it fixed immidiately. But my cousin said he can't trust his X3 and wait until something worse happens, so he sold it out to a some online car-trading orgainzation called Vroom. The communication and repair quailty of the service staff is highly scandalous. Problems still arise after fixes, at least that's what my cousin says.

Was happy until the issues starting showing up

Pros - Fun to drive, spacious, styling/exterior design is one the best

Cons - Fuel economy is not good, powertrain issues, not very reliable

Money pit The car is fun and zippy to drive. It is also easy to park… compared to the Ford Explorer I had before, the X3 is like a sports car compared to a truck. Unfortunately, I will never purchase another BMW... and had I known about this single shortcoming before purchase, I would have walked out of the dealership. At first, the transfer case became nonfunctional at barely above 36,000 miles. A few months ago I paid over 600 to replace and recalibrate an emissions pump. Today I spent more than 3.5 thousand dollars to replace the cars front differential Our second car from this dealership. Got a used one in past and loved it too

Overall Rating

Sitting lower than the bigger X5, the BMW X3 returns for the 2012 model year with no major changes apart from a minor reshuffling of optional features and packages. The SUV carries a price tag of $37,100 for the base trim and comes with BMW's xDrive AWD layout as standard in both the trim levels. The powertrain remains the same, a 3.0-liter I-6, that comes in two states of tune. The base trim gets the motor in its naturally aspirated form while the top trim gets it in its turbocharged form pushing out more horsepower and torque.

We recommend

We recommend getting the xDrive35i trim, which comes with a lot of good options like adaptive xenon lights, 18” alloy wheels, wood interior accents, and a panoramic sunroof. Additionally, it gives marginally better mpg numbers from the more powerful turbocharged engine. All in all, the xDrive35i gives the best value for money offer.

2012 BMW X3 Engine and Performance

8.1/10

The BMW X3 is powered by a 3.0 liter inline-6 making 240 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque on the xDrive28i. The xDrive35i comes with a turbocharged version of the same trim making 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. 8-speed automatic transmission is paired to both engines, and all the power goes to all the wheels.

In the performance tests, the base does the 0-60 mph sprint in 6.3 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds. The xDrive35i variant of the SUV does the 0-60mph sprint in 5.8 seconds and the quarter-mile time in 14.4 seconds. Both the variants will achieve a top speed of 130 mph.

However, it does offer the least amount of trunk space by a margin of 0.2 cu.ft. to the next smallest and 2.4 cu.ft. lesser than the most, but is still adequate trunk space. Major interior features include-

  • 8-way power-adjustable front seat

8.5/10

The 2012 BMW X3 has the same design language as the rest of the BMW lineup. It actually looks like a smaller version of the BMW X5. The exterior features 17” alloy wheels on the 28i and 18” on the 35i as standard and also adaptive xenon headlights. The rest is all in optional extras in the form of a Sports Activity Package which adds bigger wheels on both trims. • Available roof rails

2012 BMW X3 Safety

9.3/10

NHTSA has not yet given a safety rating to the BMW X3, this does include the iDrive28i and the iDrive35i. However, the IIHS has crash-tested the car and has given it “Good” in all tests along with the 2012 Top Safety Pick award in the midsize luxury SUV/4-door SUV. The BMW X3 does come with many safety features, some of these safety features are:

  • Dynamic stability control
  • Hill descent control
  • Crash sensor System
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Head protection system (front and rear)
  • Brake Fade compensation
  • ABS and Dynamic brake control

2012 BMW X3 Final Verdict

The BMW X3 is a smaller version of the BMW X5 but comes with many features and a good engine output for each trim. The interior is sophisticated and comfortable, and there is adequate space. The good part is that the more powerful engine does have a marginally better fuel economy. We recommend buying this car not only for German engineering but also for the good features including a good safety rating.
