The BMW X1 is currently in its second generation, with the 2021 model set to be a carryover from the 2020 base model. BMW X1 is a top-class luxury subcompact SUV with an intimidating look. The car gives off a very dynamic and elegant vibe with a very muscular and elite aesthetic. With a base price tag of $ 35,200, 2021 BMW X1 is expected to be launched later this year with more standard safety and convenience features added to its list. Currently, it offers two trims with the top-specced trim costing $ 37,200. However, there is only one engine on offer and the same shall continue to be offered with the 2021 model of the BMW X1.

The BMW X1 is quite a capable and popular SUV in its class. It hits the ball out of the park when it comes to offering driver-focused performance and features. Expected to come with various other convenient features and upgrades, the 2021 BMW X1 is going to give its rivals a hard time. The vehicle will face competition in the elite segment from the likes of Audi Q3, Cadillac, and Lexus NX300. Here’s our take on the 2021 BMW X1 that is soon going to be on sale in the US Market.

2021 BMW X1 Features

7.7/10

The 2020 BMW X1 was launched with two trim levels called sDrive28i and xDrive28i. The base trim was well equipped but the top end trim price rises too steeply. The upcoming trims for the 2021 model have not been released by the German automakers but one can surely expect it to be the same as the 2020 model with refinements in technology and styling. The vehicle is expected to be a well-rounded package and will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base model sDrive28i priced at 35,200USD comes with a number of features and perks but we would recommend the xDrive28i which gives AWD and some additional features for a minimal bump in the price of around $2000.

2021 BMW X1 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

BMW as a company is known for its strong attention to the needs of customers and its cars come with a strong warranty, above-average, and eco-features that make it easy for the customer to get insurance. The BMW X1 ranks at the top for reliability among other luxury subcompact SUVs.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The vehicle has a very strong residual value and an above-average reliability score by JD Power. The model has been given a satisfactory response by the users but the same can’t be said for the German automakers. BMW finished a worrying 27th out of 30 manufacturers in the Driver Power customer satisfaction survey while X1 finished a decent 58th out of 75 cars. BMW cars tend to require more regular and consistent maintenance which increases the true cost of the car monstrously.

On average the BMW X1 costs around $36,000 but surely varies across states. The people from Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Atlanta, and Delaware enjoy the lowest prices as they have exempted the sales taxes.

*2020 figures used for reference.

The X1 had a single recall of around 76 units in May 2020 which was due to the potential risk of injury because of the inactivation of safety features like airbags. A recall was issued and BMW proceeded to change the airbag control unit of all the recalled vehicles free of cost.

BMW is quite a known German manufacturer and hence it offers quite reliable and long-lasting machines. Hence, when it comes to a long-term ownership review of BMW cars, most owners remain quite happy. However, maintaining a BMW is no cheap affair as the cost of repairs can run high which is also true for the BMW X1. Hence, we do recommend taking an additional warranty for your car if you plan on keeping it for more than 5 years. The X1 is a sophisticated machine which is however quite reliable but only if regular maintenance is taken care of.

Warranty

The X1 gets the same warranty as the rest of the BMW lineup which covers three years for unlimited mileage. This puts BMW in a better position when compared to its competitors who tend to put a 60,000 miles cap on warranty. The model also gets a breakdown cover for the three years covered by warranty. This is at par with the other rivals in the industry and its nothing exceptional nor disappointing.

The manufacturers provide a need-based servicing schedule with customers getting alerted through about the condition of the car and due servicing dates via the dashboard display. BMW also offers its Service prepayment maintenance plan which includes MoT protection and free repairs by the company for a cost of around 400 dollars.

Miles Per Dollar

On average a gallon of gas costs around 2.5USD. With an estimated range of 23-32 miles per gallon, it should equate to about 10 miles per dollar.

2021 BMW X1 Buying Advice

We will recommend the xDrive28i trim from the BMW X1 lineup. Apart from BMW’s turbocharged engine, its features include AWD drivetrain, Steering Wheel Audio Control, Hill Descent Control, and Multi-info display. It also comes with an impressive infotainment system and a plethora of safety features.

Is buying a used BMW X1 a good idea?

We would recommend not to buy a used BMW as the price of a BMW depreciates rapidly and the german car tends to have high maintenance and repair costs. The vehicle becomes prone to flat tires and suspension problems as all the components become more expensive with the time.

One would be much happier buying a brand new non-luxurious car for the price of a second-hand BMW. But if you want to own a used X1, get the 2015 model year as it will be available for purchase at 30% of its retail price with about 7 years of useful life left.

2021 BMW X1 Engine and Performance

8.2/10

The 2021 model of BMW X1 is powered by the same time-tested turbocharged 2.0L inline-four engine as the 2020 model. The engine is paired with an efficient 8 speed Steptronic automatic transmission. This helps the vehicle to reach the power of around 228hp and an impressive torque of 258 lb-ft. The turbocharged engine can handle heavy loads well without breaking a sweat. The single-engine helps BMW cut down the operating costs but that is no bad news for the customers.

The engine is quite capable of rocking through tough terrains and also cruising through the highways. However, within the city, it could feel a bit cumbersome due to the turbo lag on offer. Overall, it is not a deal-breaker and the 2.0 turbocharged unit of the X1 is quite an all-rounder.

The BMW X1 gives a powerful performance but the strongest performance in the segment is given by the Cadillac XT4 closely followed by the Lexus 300. The Cady is also the priciest of the lot and the BMW is the cheapest on the list. Audi’s Q3 on the other hand offer the same level of performance as the BMW X1 but comes at a higher price.

2021 BMW X1 Acceleration And Braking Performance

The BMW X1 flies past the 60-mile mark in around 6.6 seconds while achieving the top speed of 137 MPH. The X1 across its models has been well versed with speed and intense acceleration, it reaches highway speeds quickly and makes for a strong driving impression. The new X1 is expected to be quicker with an efficient power delivery system and swift acceleration.

2021 BMW X1 SUV Accelerate 0-60 MPH in 6.6 sec

BMW X1 does an impressive job in the braking department too. The brakes perform really well for a heavy vehicle. The upcoming model is expected to come with better braking features and advanced suspension abilities. These features make the car great for everyday usage and an overall practical vehicle.

The BMW X1 is the fastest car in the segment in terms of swift acceleration and top speed. Lexus NX300 is the slowest in the list, mostly for the reason that it’s the heaviest. The weight is also the reason that it takes the longest time to stop. The BMW X1 has incredible braking performance as it comes to a stop in just 122ft, closely followed by the Audi Q3 at 125 ft.

2021 BMW X1 Fuel Economy

7.8/10

The BMW X1 has a fuel capacity of 16.1 gallons and is highly fuel-efficient along with being incredibly powerful. The X1 keeps up with other competitors in the small luxury crossover segment. The new model is expected to come with refinements related to fuel efficiency, making the vehicle more economical even though the engine and powertrain are expected to remain the same.

BMW X1 has very impressive fuel efficiency figures with a combined 26 MPG. It also has the largest fuel tank and the 531 range it reaches on highways is really appreciable. The Audi Q3 with a combined 27 MPG just nudges off compared to the BMW.

2021 BMW X1 Interior

8.5/10

The interior of the BMW X1 gives a very premium and luxurious feel. The cabin is highly dynamic and loaded with expensive quality materials. Leather upholstery has been kept standard, and its softness is the center of attention. The front has a very driver-focused layout which gives it a very sporty and athletic feel.

The X1 can seat up to five adults comfortably and provides the best in class headroom and legroom in the front seats, as well as the rear seats. The separate sides of the rear seats also tend to slide independently, as an option. There are certain materials that seem flimsy but overall, the BMW X1 offers very premium cabin look and comfort.

The interface is quite intuitive to use and the hi-resolution display remains quite bright even under direct sunlight. 2021 BMW X1 Safety

7.6/10

The BMW X1 is one of the safest picks in the segment and was awarded a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 2020 BMW X1 was not given a rating by the IIHS but still, there’s no doubt about its safety and BMW’s commitment to making their rides safe and comfortable for their customers.

In 2021, one can expect some more advanced safety features in addition to the already including tech-laden features.

Some of the key active and passive safety features include:-

  • Rear Parking Aid
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Tyre Pressure Monitor
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic High beam headlamps

2021 BMW X1 Competition

9.6/10

2021 BMW X1 V/S Audi Q3

Both of these cars by German manufacturers can look eye to eye in terms of competition. The cars have very similar powertrains in the form of engines and transmission which leads them to have a very similar power output. The BMW is the lighter and cheaper of the two but has an edge over its rival with better fuel efficiency, practicality, and a very responsive engine.

Audi A3 SUV

2021 BMW X1 V/S Cadillac XT4

The rivalry between the Beemer and the Cady has been going on for ages and continues between these two cars too. Both of them provide optimal performance on the road and are equipped with a number of advanced features. It is very hard to choose a winner between the two, but the Cadillac is a much costlier option with an uninspiring drivetrain.

Cadillac XT4 SUV

2021 BMW X1 V/S Lexus NX300

Both of the cars offer a number of similar features, that said, Lexus is the posher and luxurious of the two. Lexus aims to provide the customers with a premium and comfortable driving experience with not much emphasis on the performance. It also lacks when compared to the X1 with its lack of boot space. Overall, BMW X1 is a superior choice when compared to the Lexus NX 300.

Lexus NX300 SUV

2021 BMW X1 Final Verdict

The new model set to release in the last quarter of 2020 is expected to be an exciting addition to the lineup with its dynamic features and sporty muscular look. The vehicle is powerful, elegant, practical, and adequately efficient. The segment is really competitive and the 2021 X1 does not really have a differentiating factor but is an overall well-rounded vehicle. We highly recommend you to wait for the 2021 BMW X1 as it is expected to tempt you with its plush interiors, athletic performance, and dominant presence.
