For those who have been completely astonished by the recently launched BMW 8 series coupe, but left with a bit more desirability, BMW has other plans for them. The 2020 BMW Gran Coupe just adds in, the left behind desireness to the exotic 8 series coupe. Apart from the two extra pillarless doors, there are two models available as well to pick from. Usefulness apart, we are more interested in the power packed 2020 BMW M850i.

The 2020 M850i carries all the DNA of its coupe sibling. Be it the powertrain, front and rear faces or the striking silhouette. However, what distinguishes the Gran Coupe from the 2-door coupe are the two extra doors at the rear and a slightly bigger trunk. To accommodate those doors, the body dimensions have been tweaked that give the Gran Coupe a longer sloping roof than the 2-door model and it looks gorgeous.

Build quality and interior layout is up to the mark with BMW standards with barely anything to complain about. Overall the 2020 BMW M850i tries to strike a balance between sportiness, style, and utility. However, with all its composition at a price of $108,900, it is not the only candy in the store. The community in which this hot 4-door coupe fits in, also has residents like the Mercedes AMG GT 63 4 door, Porsche Panamera Turbo, and the Audi RS7.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Features

10/10

Since the M850i occupies the highest position in the 8 Series Gran Coupe family, it remains a standalone trim. Termed as a ‘gentleman's racer’, this stylish four-door coupe pretty much justifies its nomenclature. Apart from a thrilling V8 engine and robust performance, it is adequately packed with luxury, comfort, safety and advanced tech goodies.

Any specific recommendations on the trim to buy?

Available as a standalone trim, the BMW M850i fulfills all your desires. It's powerful, it's stylish and is practical too. If the standard accessories do not align with your senses, you can further customize it according to your taste via the BMW configurator. However, if you crave for even more thrill, you can also have a look at the bonkers M8 Gran Coupe.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Engine and Performance

9.0/10

Sprucing up the 2020 M850i’s exterior presentation is the very capable 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8. We already love the engine's operation in the M850i 2-door coupe and the engine continues to gladden us in the 4-door iteration as well. 523 horsepower from the V8 mount, might not seem earth-shattering but its power delivery is absolutely phenomenal. Every time you squeeze the pedal, a gigantic wave of torque smashes your head against the headrests every single time. The 8 speed ZF automatic transmission shifts at lightning speeds without any signs of lag at all.

The power sources in the Mercedes AMG GT 63 and the Porsche Panamera Turbo bear higher numbers and are equally exciting as well. However, you do get a very slight hint of turbo lag in the Merc during startups because of the extra power rush. The hot Audi RS7 is yet to hit the US shores, but when it does, its massive numbers are very likely to put forth a very strong competition in the segment. That's surely a battle we are really looking forward to.

How fast is the new M850i?

The 2020 BMW M850i does not boast the most burly powertrain in the segment, neither it is the most compact or lightweight. Unsurprisingly though, it reaches the 60-mile mark from standstill in just 3.7 seconds which is similar to the 2-door coupe, but not the best in class. However, power delivery is so linear in the M850i, that it actually feels fastest among the lot from behind the wheels.

Among the competition, the Mercedes AMG GT 63 4 door turns out to be the fastest sprinter. The Merc hits the 60 miles mark from zero in just 3.3 seconds making the most of its 577 horses and superb aerodynamics.

How does the M850i fare on the Ride and Handling front?

Surprisingly though, even with its serious sports moniker, the 2020 BMW M850i offers a decently comfortable ride quality. 20-inch rims are part of the standard outfit, however, you can switch to 19 inches for enhanced ride comfort. Standard all-wheel drive and traction control keeps this ‘gentleman’s racer’, hooked to the ground all the time. However, it’s larger proportions and heavy mass do reflect in the very tiny body roll around corners. What compensates for its little tiny imperfections, is the four-wheel steering wheel. The steering is very responsive and precise and very well hides the heftiness of this stylish new Beemer, making it as agile as a small car.

What about the Braking performance?

60-0 braking distance of the 2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe is not available yet, but this new Beemer is blessed with some serious equipment. The brake pedal feels reassuringly firm and greets you with immediate responses every time you crunch them hard.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Front Brake is 15.5 in.

With its bigger brakes and sporty ergonomics, the Panamera turbo’s 98 feet 60-0 seems a very firm benchmark to break in. However, once the braking data for the other three competitors are out, things could get much exciting. Again, what we are particularly interested in, is the new RS7 which flaunts the largest set of discs in the segment as well as the lightest body.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Even with a powerful engine and that spurting power delivery, the 2020 BMW M850i delivers a very responsible fuel economy. 17, 25 and 20 mpg in city, highway and combined respectively is above class average.

However, in the class, the Porsche Panamera turbo delivers a slightly better 21 mpg combined. A lighter body, efficient traction management system and enhanced aerodynamics account for a promising fuel economy

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Interior

10/10

Like the exterior frame, the interior of the new 2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe is also reminiscent of its begetter. The dashboard layout and interior presentation is exactly similar to its two-door sibling. Leather interior trim comes standard and every surface that you might get in contact with is draped in high-quality material. Buyers also get two chose their own combination of shades for the dual-tone interior leather surfaces. The enhanced proportions open up 3.4 inches of more rear headroom and 7.1 inches more rear legroom than in the 8 series coupe.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Rear Seats

The seats are comfortable and supportive, while the Merino leather upholstery feels very premium and smooth to touch. The optional ‘M Sport’ seats come with additional lateral support and hug you tightly going around corners. Needless to say, the party trick in the 2020 8 series Gran Coupe is the rear bench that can now accommodate two adults very comfortably. The longer and wider body does provide ample shoulder and legroom, but taller occupants at the rear might still scuffle for some more headroom.

Seating data of the Panamera and RS7 are not yet available, however, data shows that all the other participants in the league should offer vetter shoulder and headroom than the 2020 M850i Gran Coupe. All the three style icons that the Gran Coupe rivals with, incorporate better body height and are even wider than the Beemer.

How good is the Infotainment system?

The infotainment system is similar to the one seen across the 8 series family which comprises a 10.25-inch infotainment display sitting atop the dash. The infotainment misses out on Android Auto but comes standard with Apple CarPlay with 20 years subscription at a price of $400. The system runs on BMW’s latest iDrive 7.0 and can be controlled via the rotary dial on the central panel or touch inputs. The system also responds to voice commands for different functions, that we are not a big fan of.

The easy to operate display is bright and vibrant with crisp graphics and actively responds to each of your inputs. However, the same cannot be said about the 12.0 inch ‘live cockpit professional’ digital drivers display. The driver's display is pretty complex to configure and the graphics on it do not live up to BMW standards. For music lovers, the M850i Gran Coupe comes with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium surround audio that sounds phenomenal.

  • Satellite Radio
  • Bluetooth connection and WiFi hotspot
  • USB connectivity and hard disk drive media storage

How much Cargo can you carry?

The extended body that the 2020 BMW M850i receives over the coupe rewards it with a larger boot space than the M850i coupe. The cargo bay now increases by 0.7 inches, opening up 15.5 cu-ft of space in the trunk. The cargo bay is fairly considerable since you don't buy such an exotic looking thing with large boot as a priority. Thankfully though, the rear seats can be folded down in 40:20:40 split for an even bigger cargo area, when needed.

The Audi RS7 holds the top spot among the segment in terms of boot space with a crossover like 25.0 cu-ft of space behind its rear bench. A relatively shorter hood, allowing for more body space and hatchback rear profile comes in really handy for the RS7 in terms of cargo area.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Exterior

10/10

Take a look at the 2020 BMW M850i from the front or the rear and you will barely be able to distinguish it from its two-door sibling. That's how similar its exterior sheet is, to the two-door 8 series coupe. However, glide down its side profile and the changes are instantly noticeable. Yes, the most prominent change is the two additional doors at the rear. However, to accommodate these doors and for a better interior room, the dimensions have been stretched as well.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Third Quarter View

The wheelbase is now 7.9 inches longer allowing for 9.0 inches of extra body length over the two-door coupe. The Gran Coupe is also 1.2 inches wider and 2.2 inches taller to open up more passenger space inside. The stretched up dimensions allow for a wider presence and a long tapering roofline that looks absolutely stunning. Panoramic sunroof comes standard with every 8 series Gran Coupe whereas an optional full carbon-fiber roof is also available. Apart from these subtle changes, everything else remains identical to the M850i coupe.

However, the exterior design cues of the 2020 M850i Gran Coupe is highly contested and might be subjective as well. The club which this hot new Beemer is a member of also has some extremely exotic machines and they all flash a similarly stylish profile.

BMW M850i Gran Coupe vs Mercedes AMG GT 63

The Mercedes AMG GT 63 4 door goes neck-to-neck with the BMW 850i Gran Coupe in the segment. It gets a more powerful engine than the Beemer and is quicker too. This stylish Merc provides a more sports-oriented cabin with an equally impressive fit and finish. It is more controlled around corners and offers a better passenger room as well. However, the Gran Coupe shines over the Merc with its phenomenal power delivery, better fuel economy and more cargo space.

2020 Mercedes AMG GT 63

BMW M850i Gran Coupe vs Porsche Panamera Turbo

Long considered as the benchmark in the luxury 4-door coupe, the Porsche Panamera is a very prominent member of the segment. The Panamera Turbo offers more power than the Gran Coupe, is more comfortable and provides better handling than the Beemer as well. Its interior appointments are top-notch and it also comes loaded with a plethora of tech and safety features. Apart from this, the Panamera also offers a better fuel economy as well as a bigger trunk. However, it's the M850i Gran Coupe’s exhilarating power delivery that makes it more fun to drive than the Porsche

BMW M850i Gran Coupe vs Audi RS7

Arriving in the States very soon in 2020, the Audi RS7 presents a configuration that seems the most promising in the class that it would join. Be it the sleek yet aggressive exterior flair, bonkers 591 hp engine, top-notch build quality, and interior materials as well as a larger boot. The 2020 RS7 is packed to the neck with Audi’s most advanced safety and tech goodies apart from finely-tuned sporting mechanics. We would only be able to get a bit more insight about the 2020 RS7, once it hits the stores, and we test its capabilities on the track.

2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Final Verdict

9.2/10

The 2020 BMW M850i is perfectly suited for those who want a luxury sports sedan that not only looks apart but is also extremely fun to drive and handle. The M850i Gran Coupe is one of those vehicles that not only can tame down some laps on track days, but also drop your kids to the school in utmost comfort. An adequately powered engine with blistering performance, luxury interiors, superb ride, and handling and yes, BMW's best 4-door design by far, are some of the trademark signature of the 2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe.
