The BMW 8 series received a red-carpet welcome amongst the people who still insisted on getting more. After remaining long discontinued for years, the BMW 8 series has stood to the expectations of its customers. In 2021, though, BMW has no new plans for those who are willing to buy a BMW 8 series gran coupe. This successor of the exotic 8 series coupe, with two extra pillarless doors, already offers a lot more to catch one’s mind. However, it's totally unchanged for the upcoming model except for the prices.

The BMW 8 series although having the same DNA stands out from its pack with more evolutions, a twin turbo V8 engine, robust performance, comfort, safety, and advanced tech goodies. Often termed as the “gentleman’s racer” this supreme trim serves to its name in every sense. However, the BMW M850i gran coupe has remained unchanged since the 2019 release but it still manages to look new and fresh everytime in the market. Even with a high fanbase, the BMW M850i Gran Coupe has to compete with the highly capable Lexus LC 500, the mighty Mercedes-Benz AMG S63, and the powerful Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Overall Rating

The 2021 BMW M850i is set to showcase itself in dealers near you, however, it is going to remain unchanged from its previous version and is offered in all three coupe, gran coupe and convertible versions. Some addition to the features list could have better justified the hike in prices. However, it is similarly safe, and drives with the same smoothness and carries the same ride and handling aesthetics of the previous version. BMW still could have worked on the shortcomings of the vehicles, however, the slow demand of the vehicle might have hindered the thought.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Buying Advice

The single trim offered by the M850i Gran Coupe gets you almost everything a car can offer you. The Gran Coupe is worth considering and buying if what you need is luxury, sport, safety, and reliability all under a single roof.

Is buying a used BMW M850i Gran Coupe a good idea?

There have been huge discussions and debates on whether buying a used M850i Gran Coupe is a worthy choice. However, the discussions ended up in the conclusion that the 8-series Gran Coupe is a good vehicle from the beginning of its sales. However, the M6 from Mercedes is a pretty good alternative for the BMW M850i Gran Coupe as the used M8 can be of lesser price and more value when it comes to the user segment.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Engine and Performance

The 2021 BMW M850i gran coupe is equipped with the same twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine of the 2020 model that features track-ready cooling systems, a Twin-Scroll Bi-Turbo and above all a uniquely designed dual oil pan that helps maintain oil pressure during intense maneuvers. The powerful engine features mind-blowing power delivery when your legs press down the throttle.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe has 4.4L Turbocharged V8 engine

Equipped with all these well-defined features, the trim’s power output gets to be around 523 horsepower and delivers a 553 lb.-ft. of torque. The All-wheel drivetrain along with the sharp and fast-shifting 8-speed ZF automatic transmission marks exceptional performance on the roads.

The bimmer comes out to be second-most powerful after the mighty S-Class which is obvious from what it costs. The torque figures also come after that of the S-Class but far better than the Lexus or the Porsche. The competition proves the M850i Gran Coupe to be a budget-friendly power-packed performer.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Acceleration and Braking

The 2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe with the 4.4-liter V-8 engine under the hood gives sleeker acceleration on the tracks and roads. The lighting-fast 8-speed automatic transmission distributes the power to all the wheels intelligently letting you accelerate faster. The M850i gran coupe takes around 3.6 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from a perfect 0. The Quarter-mile race is completed within 12 seconds which is also impressive in the segment.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe accelerate 0-60 mph in 3.6 sec

The brake of the car is extremely responsive to situations and offers firmness and confidence even at higher speeds. The responses are immediate but the 60-0 braking distance data is not yet available for the model.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Fuel Economy

The intelligent engine and powertrain of the 2021 M850i Gran Coupe offer good mpg figures indeed. The figures are made far better and practical than competitors. However, the M850i Gran Coupe gets a smaller gallon tank which means you will have to stop frequently at the fuel station. This would reduce the goodness of the efficient engine and makes people feel like they empty the tank faster.

The bimmer offers 18 miles per gallon in city drives, 25 miles per gallon on the highways, and 20 miles per gallon combined figure. The tank sets a range of 324 miles on the city, 450 miles on the highway, and 360 miles combined.

The Lexus LC gets the largest fuel tank capacity which means it gets a better range advantage. However, the AMG S63 gets the best MPG figures and range. The bimmer is as good as the rivals in terms of economy and efficiency of the engine but disappoints with the smaller fuel tank.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Interior

The interiors of the 2021 M850i Gran Coupe are mind-blowing and luxurious. The beautifully toned interiors are sophisticated and premium as it feels. The cabin is completely built of high-quality materials. The interiors get Merino leather upholstery which is smooth and heavenly. Moreover, the interiors are now more spacious and the rear seats are offered which indeed is roomy. However, the rear seats may not be much comfortable for taller fellows as it would be in almost every car of this segment.

One shall opt for an optional M Sport seat that offers additional support and hugs you around the sides. The seats also offer enough space for your leg and shoulders and let you settle comfortably. The heated and ventilated seats in the front let you relax during long drives. The integrated central console extends to the rear seats. The rear seats get a central arm-rest with storage.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Competition

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe vs Lexus LC 500

The Lexus LC is less powerful and has less torque when compared to the BMW 8-series. The M850i Gran Coupe is faster and gets a more efficient engine under its hood. The interiors and tech inside are also better for the M850i Gran Coupe than that of the Lexus.

Lexus LC500

The external dimensions are also lesser for the Lexus LC.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe vs Mercedes-AMG S 63

The competition goes neck-to-neck when it gets the Mercedes on one side and the bimmer on the other. The Mercedes- Benz AMG S63 is more sporty, stylish, and luxurious which is justified by the price point. The bimmer is cheaper but less powerful than the Mercedes.

Mercedes-AMG S 63

However, the M850i gets better fuel economy, spacious and roomy interiors, and better cargo capacity.

2021 BMW M850i Gran Coupe Final Verdict

The BMW M850i Gran Coupe is one of the handiest, fun-to-drive, efficient and powerful vehicles that are stylish and luxurious. The M850i is signature craftwork from the BMW, in terms of safety, practicality, and reliability. And yes the BMW M850i Gran Coupe is the best pick in the 4-door luxury sport sedan segment and worth buying.
