After being talked about for many years, the legendary BMW 8 Series made its way back to the market in 2018. However, unlike the first-generation models from 1989-99, the new 8 Series also brought with itself the higher-performing M8 models. Now two years later, the topless avatar of the M8 is here with a handful of design changes.

As for the engine, BMW took advantage of the well tested powerplant from the current generation M5 and placed it under the hood of the 2020 BMW M8 Convertible. The 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 makes 600 hp and 553 lb.-ft. torque. So the 2020 BMW M8 Convertible drives the way it looks.

However, there’s more to this Beamer than just performance and styling. At a price of $133,995, the 2020 BMW M8 Convertible is significantly cheaper than the likes of Audi's R8 and Bentley’s Continental GT, but manages to undermine their existence in every aspect.

8.0/10

The 2020 BMW M8 Convertible is available in two different versions. There’s the standard Base model, and the other is the even more performance oriented Competition variant. Both variants are equally loaded with tech and features and it’s hard to tell one from the other without actually getting to drive them.

Both the variants use the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine from the M5. Although the one on the M8 Competition is a bit more punchy. The Base M8’s engine makes 600 hp. While the one on the Competition variant makes 17 hp over the Base version at 617 hp. Torque for both models remains the same at 553 lb.ft.

We Recommend:

The M8 Competition Convertible combines the best of both worlds of BMW. It shares the basic elements of the 8 Series and takes them to a whole another level by fusing it with the M family. Plus it offers that soft top fun of a convertible. Overall, this Beamer is one of the best Gran Tourers out there. An MSRP of $155,500 just makes it an even sweeter deal.

2020 BMW M8 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2020 M8 Convertible has just the one engine type like the rest of the M8 Series. The engine that lies underneath the hood of the 2020 M8 Convertible is a S63 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. This powertrain makes 600 hp and 553 lb.-ft. torque. For those looking to have more fun on the go can opt for the M8 Competition Convertible.

The latter version allows you to have more fun with another 17 hp available on tap from the same engine. The V8 on both models spends what it makes on the rear-biased all-wheel drivetrain with the help of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

How fast is the BMW M8 Convertible?

The 2020 BMW M8 Convertible comes standard with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission mated to the M xDrive all-wheel drivetrain. The all-wheel drive system is slightly inclined toward the rear two wheels of this convertible.

The 2020 M8 Convertible Front View

As a result this 4,500 pound machine accelerates with much ease and comfort. BMW claims that the 2020 M8 Convertible should do 0-60 miles per hour run just a little over 3 seconds. This makes the M8 Convertible one of the world’s quickest GT cars.

The top speed of this M8 has been electronically limited to 155 miles per hour. The optional M Driver’s package shifts that limit up to 190 miles per hour.

What about the braking performance of the BMW M8 Convertible?

The 2020 BMW M8 Convertible comes equipped with compound brakes from the factory. It features automatic braking function and collision and pedestrian warning with city braking function. So it is safe to say that the braking on this M8 Convertible is at par with its acceleration.

The 2020 M8 Convertible Front Brake 15.5 in

BMW has also made it known that this Convertible will feature a new braking system with an adjustable pedal feel to make things that much simpler. The “integrated braking system” will feature two modes, Comfort and Sport which will accordingly alter force needed to slow the car down. The carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers are a standalone performance option.

What about its driving dynamics?

The 2020 M8 Convertible sports adaptive suspension and 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in summer tyres for better performance. It also features different driving modes to match the various driving scenarios.

Suspension of the M8 Convertible has been overhauled, as is the frame, with stuff like forged links, steel x-braces and struts connecting the shock tower to the bulkhead. The transmission of this convertible usually sends power to all the wheels for better handling.

2020 BMW M8 Convertible hits 0-60 in just 3.1 sec

However, switching to “Sport” mode sends more power to the rear wheels to help in better acceleration on straight lines. The most fun can be had by disengaging the DSC. Doing so works an active rear differential with this M8’s M Dynamic mode to allow a degree of controlled oversteer.

The adaptive suspension reads road conditions, steer and passenger movements to accordingly adjust each damper individually. So this Beamer is not only fun around corners and on race tracks. It is also pretty plush over bumps.

Even the steering can be adjusted either to Comfort mode or Sport mode depending on the drive. The M Servotronic power steering improves stability and response. Hence, this M8 Competition feels pretty wieldy all around.

2020 BMW M8 Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The BMW M8 Convertible is a Gran Tourer as is proven by its fuel ratings. Despite all the power from that twin-turbo V8 and the kind of performance that this Beamer delivers, the M8 Convertible is significantly fuel efficient.

It returns a fuel economy of 15 miles per gallon in the city, 21 miles per gallon on the highway and 17 miles per gallon combined. Compared to other cars in this segment, the Beamer’s fuel efficiency is better than average.

2020 BMW M8 Interior

The 8 series of the BMW lineup has a unique cabin. So the M8 benefits largely from it too. At the top of the dashboard is a 10.25-inch infotainment display which is a part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional. That system also features a 12.3-inch instrument cluster which provides a similar feel as the X5 SUV and Z4.

The customizable display changes appearances depending on the choice of driving mode. Carbon fibre is standard trim on the inside. For what is not covered in it, leather and alcantara take over. So the cabin has a pretty premium feel to it.

2020 BMW M8 Convertible Front Seats

Seats in the front row are quite heavily bolstered and feel very sporty. Not that they are not comfortable. Also there’s plenty of room in the front row. The front two seats are separated by a center console which includes controls for audio system and air conditioning.

Space in the second row might not be as accommodating as in the front. Not that it is at all cramped. It is just smaller than what other competitors have to offer. A set back of its coupe like design.

So far we’ve talked about this Beamer’s engine, its brakes and seats. All things that are on the inside. These are the things that come secondary to what matters most. What does the car look like? Because quite frankly a car that boasts a twin-turbo V8 has to look the part.

So for the year 2020, the M8 Convertible has received a rather modest touch up. The front looks agressive with blacked out signature BMW kidney grille which houses the M double bars. The air intakes are also larger now to improve aerodynamics and cooling.

2020 BMW M8 Convertible Side VIew

At the side, the side-view mirrors have also been redesigned for improved airflow. Complementing them are the flared front wheel arches with M gills in the front side panels. The roof in this convertible is made of a flexible textile that comes in black as standard or in Anthracite silver as an option.

Moving on to the back, several noticeable changes have been made to it too. The rear now replaces the trapezoid exhaust outlets for the traditional M-Spec quad-exhaust outlets. On top of them is the sleek spoiler to complete the overall sportiness of this M8 Competition.

2020 BMW M8 Competition

BMW M8 Convertible vs. Mercedes-Benz AMG S63

This comparison seems fairly moot. Sure the Merc offers premium luxury and exquisite driving experience, but the M8 Competition Convertible can do all that while being significantly cheaper at the same time. Also this Beamer is the one car that will not let that smile disappear off of your face when you throw it around in corners.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63

BMW M8 Competition Convertible vs. Audi R8

The Audi R8 is a great car. There’s no two ways about it. It’s quick, it handles great and is also more or less fuel efficient. So what about the M8 Competition Convertible? Well, it is quicker than the R8. With adaptive suspension and different steering modes, it handles better than the Audi. At the same time it is more fuel efficient. Still, if all this is not enough, the Competition Convertible also has a second row and a much bigger boot. Match that!

2020 Audi R8

2020 BMW M8 Final Verdict

The BMW M8 Convertible is easily worth every penny you spend on it. With the kind of customization options that it offers, it is a hard-to-beat package. Even without all the additional packages, this Beamer can still rule. It has best in class acceleration, fuel economy and cargo volume. Plus with the additional Driver Assistance Packages the 2020 BMW M8 Convertible is easily the best performance Gran Tourer of the year 2020. The other Competition variant simply tops things up with its even more powerful 625 hp engine.
