2020 BMW M5 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: July 10, 2020

Looks can be deceiving and BMW has the perfect representation of it in the form of the all new 2020 M5. With a 4.4L V8 under the hood of a rather simple looking body, this German sure knows how to design an underdog. All other performance sedans flaunt sharp lines and imposing road presence but not the M5. This Bimmer contradicts all that and simply focuses on what lies under the hood rather than appearing aggressive on the outside.

At the same time, the M5 is based on the standard BMW 5-Series. So it boasts of the same well-built and spacious cabin. Only, it tops things off with cetrain M-specific accents and badging. In all, the 2020 BMW M5 strives to find that sweet spot between excitement and indulgence and does so quite effortlessly. It's got an engine you'd want to rev all day and a cabin you'd want to spend all evening in.

Overall Rating

With one of the lowest price points in this segment, the M5 talks serious business. For the inexperienced , the 5-series and the M5 would look pretty much the same. With 600 horses and 553 lb-ft torque under the hood, however, it can be a total hoonigan whenever asked.

It is now available in two trims-base and competition. The competition variant adds a bit more oomph and a mild aesthetic and handling upgrade. This was available as a package which has made its way into 2020 as a variant thus appealing to a wider audience.

2020 BMW M5 is available in two variants. The Base comes in at a sticker price of $102,700 and the Competition at $110,000. Both the variants are almost identical with a few key variations. For starters, both M5 and M5 Competition source power from the same 4.4-liter V8 and get all-wheel drive as standard. But that is about it.

The Competition variant has not only been aesthetically modified with bits on the outside. Its engine too has been tuned to bump up the power but the torque remains the same. The suspension has also been tuned up for better stability at corners.

Which 2020 M5 trim should you go for?

Both the Base and Competition trims are pretty much the same, with subtle modifications to the suspension, colored exterior panels, and a Valvetronic exhaust system. So it is really a choice of how engaging you want your M5 to be.

The Competition trim is our choice as the $7,300 premium is worth it. It improves handling, gives a commanding stance and makes its presence felt with the throaty exhaust note and at the same time being more fun to drive as well.

2020 BMW M5 Engine and Performance

7.2/10

The German hoonigan is powered by a 4.4-Liter Twin-turbocharged V8 which puts it in the cage with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S and the Audi RS7 Sportback. With the updated CT6-V from Cadillac, the performance sedan category has become a hotspot.

The Bimmer’s cousins and its American brother are powered by V8’s. All of them are turbocharged with the M5 having the biggest engine of the lot at 4.4L. The E63S and M5 produce almost the same power at 600hp and 603hp respectively and stay on top of the pyramid. But the Cadillac takes over the torque game with a whopping 640lb-ft at 3400rpm. All the sedans are powered by an automatic transmission with manual override.

2020 BMW M5 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 Engine

The 2020 M5 is the first iteration of the model to have an All-Wheel-Drive System which has an adaptable Rear Wheel only mode. Hardcore M5 fans will surely miss on the lost manual gearbox which made it so much fun to drive. An M differential shifts power between the four wheels to keep traction afoot. But all is not lost as the rear-wheel-only mode makes sure the car goes sideways!

In this picture, Mercedes Benz AMG E63 S is the clear winner in terms of sheer power figures. With a price of $107,350, it brings a pretty tempting deal on the table. But it is closely followed by the Bimmer which isn’t shy of its slightly inferior performance. A look at other characteristics of the car-like handling and curb weight will help in coming to a conclusion.

How fast is the BMW M5?

The new All Wheel Drive Transmission helps shave a lot of time off this Bimmer’s 0-60. This makes it the quickest in this segment with a quarter-mile time of under 11 seconds. This is courtesy of a very cunning body structure and adaptive transmission setup which helps it catapult with such ferocity without even looking the part!

What about BMW M5's ride quality?

The 2020 BMW M5 has a distinctive personality with the sole purpose of providing maximum driving pleasure. It has very direct steering and the ride is stiff, not the uneasy type but more of the casual type. The M differential works its magic in the corners with exceptional levels of grip. All of this doesn’t make this Bimmer any less of a luxury sedan. In Comfort mode, the M5 puts on a rather subtle mask.

The adjustable M suspension gives the liberty to choose from three distinctive modes ranging from daily cruising to expressive fun to drive feel.

What's the braking capacity of BMW M5?

Stopping power is handled by slotted calipers all around with 15.6 inches at the front and 15 inches at the rear. Optional Carbon ceramic brakes help provide more bit and are more track-oriented.

2020 BMW M5 Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The M5 delivers a combined 19 miles to a gallon, which is pretty decent given its competition. With the various driving modes available, the Bimmer can be tuned to act differently. Thus, unleashing the hell out of itself only when needed. This adaptive character helps in saving fuel.

2020 BMW M5 Interior

8.7/10

The M5 has six color options for the interior which includes three shades of brown, black, Silverstone and smoke white. The interior also mimics the exterior, simple and elegant but is a lot more luxurious. Surely, the Germans like to hoon while being chauffeured! With leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber on the list, BMW surely knows how to bring the interior together.

The front row seats are optimized for aggressive driving with contours to hold the occupants in place. The rear seats are shockingly comfortable taking into account its purpose, and both are covered in leather.

While its German cousins sacrifice on the rear seating for a sportback look or better dynamics, the M5 puts in a lot of effort to keep it as comfortable as possible. The Cadillac CT6-V is the only other competitor that focuses on comfort but it loses a lot on performance. The Bimmer manages to create a balance between hooliganism and comfort.

How is the tech inside the cabin of BMW M5?

The M5 features 10.2-inch high-resolution infotainment with the latest iDrive software. It is located in the driver’s field of view and has a rotary knob on the center console to control it. The driver also has all the controls for the infotainment at his fingertips.

Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The BMW M5 is a sober-looking car, there is no denying that fact. An untrained eye would find it difficult to differentiate a 5-Series with the M5. There a few subtle changes like the redesigned bumpers, lip spoiler, quad exhaust setup and the unmistakable M branding.

The M5 boasts of a Carbon fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) roof which helps in drastically reducing the curb weight along with a lower center of gravity an improved rigidity. It has a plethora of color options for the exterior, eleven to be exact.

BMW M5 Sedan Three Quarter View

BMW has gone forward with the deceiving looks on the latest M5. It clearly doesn’t look the part of a performance sedan. At 195.5 inches, it is the shortest of the lot. It doesn’t try to shout out its characteristics and has a humble appearance until driven!

Subtle add ons like a lip spoiler and black painted exterior panels help it differ from the 5-series.

BMW M5 VS Mercedes-AMG E63 S

The only competitor which knocks on this Bimmer’s doors. It has a marginal bump in power output as well as the price. But it has a certain set of characteristics which makes it stand apart. To start with, it has a very throaty exhaust note which is enough to know of its presence.

2020 Mercedes- AMG E63S

The power is also distributed in a more aggressive manner which makes it an untamed animal in front of the rather decent( I dare say!) M5. This Merc is for the set of people who like their cars outright brutal with no split character whereas the M5 has two faces which can be swapped at will.

BMW M5 VS Audi RS7 Sportback

The Audi RS7 is a pretty good performance sedan but the fact that it cost nearly $8000 more than the more powerful BMW M5 makes it a bummer! With more curb weight and less interior space it doesn’t have much in its favor. The M5 is a clear more practical and powerful car here.

2020 Audi RS7 Sportback

BMW M5 VS Cadillac CT6-V

The American doesn’t even stand a chance in front of the M5. The only wild card it has is the extravagant seating and interior space. But we know for sure that it's the last thing on a person's mind who is in the market for a performance sedan. The hoonigan scores here.

2020 BMW M5 Final Verdict

With a tempting price tag of $102,700 and 600 horses on tap, the BMW M5 brings a very lucrative deal. Also, the due importance is given to luxury and safety truly holds up to its category of performance sedans. If looks are only secondary for you and serious performance from your comfy 5-seater sedan is the first thing on your mind, then the M5 is most definitely the one for you.

Track focussed daily driver

Pros - Quarter mile dash, refined powerband, trackworthy yet a good daily driver

Cons - Not free from awkward bodyroll, exhaust note, hypersensitive lane warning system

Overall Review

10 /10 Overall Rating

As long as its a drag, the V8 churns out enough power to put the most track focussed super cars to shame. Want to know what's even better? It is the refined powerband fine tuned for the dragstrips where the power is attained at low rpms resulting in zipping launch after it burns a little rubber beneath. Red lines at impressive 6k but could have done a little better there. So, as soon as you hit a flat corner, bodyroll will throw you from one side to another even in sports modes, something I count as a let down from BMW. All this in mind and a few other things, I still have no grudges with the performance given the fact that it nails the daily driving as well without any problems and still manages to do a stunning job when flogging it on the freeways.
