It was a given that BMW's X7 full-size SUV would get the Alpina treatment, which is now available in the form of the 2021 Alpina XB7. - Caranddriver

The 2021 Alpina XB7 is quite unmatched when it comes to the performance and luxury on offer. This twin-turbocharged V8 motor under the hood comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and that helps the car to give out a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 180 MPH, both of which helps the SUV to be the fastest of the lot. The safety and driver-assistance features are filled to the brim too, as it comes as standard with forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, etc.

Available for a base MSRP of $141,300, the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 also offers lucrative lease and finance deals, making it quite value for money proposition of the segment. This ultra-luxury SUV can be had for a lease price of $2,628/month, which is for a 36-month term with a down payment of $2,674. The car can also be financed for a monthly payment of $2,377, which is for a 60-month term with an estimated APR of 0.9%. It needs a down payment of $7,629. Even though the 5-year cost of ownership and miles per dollar ratio hasn't been revealed yet, we expect it to be cheaper to live with than some of the rivals like the 2021 Cullinan and the 2021 Bentayga.

While BMW as an automaker has always gotten rave reviews about their overall build quality, the ownership costs have usually been on the higher side. The reliability factor has also

2021 BMW Alpina XB7 Reliability Ratings and Recalls

BMW pays utmost importance to the quality of building its cars and conducts stringent checks in order to make sure that its cars are reliable. While the Alpina XB7 is the newest appellation from the automaker and hasn't been rated by J.D. Power for reliability, its soul sibling, the X7 scored 4 out of 5 stars in the reliability rating and an acceptable reliability score of 76 out of a possible 100 from J.D. Power. The scores from J.D. Power are derived from several parameters on the basis of user feedbacks and responses. The following is the breakdown of the score on those parameters:

Parameter Score out of 100 Verdict
Quality & Reliability 76 Great
Driving Experience 73 Great
Resale 74 Great
Dealership Experience 79 Great

Despite being a new vehicle, the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 has already seen a recall in its nascent lifespan. This recall pertained to a fault in the child seat tether which was not accessible for the middle rear seat. This directly translated to the child restraint system for the rear middle seat to be useless, and ultimately increased the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Hopefully, the ride will not see any other recall in the year to come and pass by with a clean streak.

2021 BMW Alpina XB7 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 finds itself as a part of the elite class of vehicles that form the dream-team of ultra-opulent high riders. Carrying a price tag of $141,300, you can very well understand that owning the car will not come cheap. The standard X7 which carries a starting MSRP of $73,900 costs about $82,000 to own for a period of 5-years. Hence, you can expect the true cost to own the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 to be in the ballpark of $190,000, and that too without any options.

The majority of the ownership costs will be incurred in the first year owing to the heavy depreciation, state taxes, and financing fees, all of which are highest in the first year. From the second year itself, the hit of these parameters will decrease while other costs like fuel costs and maintenance costs will start to rise. If you want to offset some of these costs in the long term, then you can opt for an extended warranty plan that can help you out in that regard.

2021 BMW Alpina XB7 Warranty

Though the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 sits at the top of the price bracket and segment bracket of the BMW lineup of vehicles, the warranty is shortsighted with limited bumper-to-bumper coverage that is in place for 4-years or 50,000 miles; whichever comes first. The powertrain coverage is also for the same period while the roadside assistance is also in place for the same period, minus the mileage limit. The other coverages in the warranty are:

Warranty Coverage Period
Limited Bumper to Bumper Warranty 4 years / 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier
Powertrain Warranty 4 years / 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier
24-hr Roadside Assistance 4 years / unlimited miles
Corrosion Protection 12 years / unlimited miles
Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance 3 years / 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

For many, the limited bumper-to-bumper warranty might seem crippling and truly "limited" and hence they can opt for an extended warranty plan that can expand the purview of coverage to 7-years or 100,000 miles depending on your choice. There are various extended warranty plans that you can tailor to your specific usages.

Miles Per Dollar

The fact that the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 is a costly ride to own is an understatement as you can expect the fuel costs to be around $3,300 when you run the ride for 16,000 miles annually. Add to that the average maintenance costs of $2,000 and you get a true big-bucks spending high rider. At those figures, you can expect 3.2 miles per dollar that you spend on it and consecutively, a cost of 31 cents per mile that you run it around.

2021 BMW ALPINA XB7 Buying Advice

8.5/10

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 is a feature-packed and ultra-luxury full-size SUV that is offered in a single trim configuration for a base MSRP of $141,300. While the interior trims and paint job are your own choices, we would recommend you to add the Rear-Seat Entertainment system for an extra $2,200 as that will allow you to extend the courtesy of personal entertainment to the rear passengers. If you are an audiophile we would also add the impressive Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System for an MSPR of $3,400.

BMW doesn't currently build a full M version of its large X7 SUV, but the Alpina-tuned XB7 comes reasonably close to offering that level of performance. - Edmunds

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 is powered by an ALPINA-tuned 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain comes hooked up to an 8-speed ZF sourced torque converter automatic transmission that can put the power down through the Drive AWD drivetrain. Available for a base MSPR of $141,300, it can also give out a maximum towing capacity of 5,950 lbs, making it one of the best of the segment for towing and hauling.

Coming with the automatic air suspension system with airbags on all four corners, the 2021 Alpina XB7 turned out to be excellent in the ride quality front. It manages to absorb all the bumps and potholes with ease, making it an excellent highway cruiser as well as an urban commuter. However, the 2021 Alpina XB7 wasn't the most fun to drive offering of the segment, mainly due to the high body roll and vague steering setup. As a result, the car doesn't inspire confidence while taking corners at higher speeds.

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 managed to do the 0-60 mph in an impressive 3.6 seconds. The car could also hit the quarter-mile marker in 12.1 seconds and can do a top speed of 180 MPH when going flat out. With 15.5" front brake rotors and 15.7" rear brake rotors, the 2021 Alpina XB7 gave out excellent braking performance too. However, the 60-0 mph braking distance hasn't been measured yet. In comparison, the 2021 BMW X7 did the 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds.

Buying the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 is a dream for many, however, its MPG figures are far below the stature of any other Bimmer for that matter. Save for some minor trim pieces and Alpina logos, the interior of the XB7 is identical to the regular X7's. - Edmunds

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 is one of the most opulent and spacious offerings of the full-size SUV segment that is sold in the United States. This SUV comes with the all the bells and whistles like leather upholstery, 4-zone automatic climate control system, heated and powered seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and many more as standards, all of which adds to the comfort of the passengers. Available in 9 interior colors and 11 wooden inlays, the interior also is very premium. It is well designed too, with spot-on ergonomics. When it comes to the interior space on offer, the 2021 Alpina XB7 doesn't disappoint either.

The front row of the 2021 Alpina XB7 turned out to be the most spacious of the lot, due to the impressive headroom and shoulder room on offer. The leather upholstery and the excellent under-thigh support and side bolstering provided by the seats make it a comfortable place to be. The second-row seats are also quite phenomenal, even though we found the legroom of 37.6" to be lower than all the rivals. The 2021 Alpina XB7, which is available for a base selling price of $141,300, is also the only 6-seater SUV of the segment, and hence it offers a third-row too, which has usable space for 2 adults. However, the cargo capacity of 12.8 cu ft was the lowest of the lot.

The 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 would be our pick of the lot if you have a big family, as it is the only offering with a third row. Even the front and second row of the XB7 is also very spacious. However, the 2021 Mercedes Benz Maybach GLS turned out to be the most spacious in the segment, with the best-in-class headroom and legroom. However, both the 2021 Cullinan and the 2021 Bentayga gave out a slightly lower interior space than the 2021 XB7. The cargo space was the best for the Cullinan, which is followed by the Maybach GLS 600 and the Bentayga. When it comes to entertainment, the 2021 XB7 gets the 12.3" touchscreen Drive infotainment system and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system as standard.

This Drive touchscreen infotainment system turned out to be very intuitive to use, mainly due to the excellent icon layout, touch sensitivity, and a long list of useful features on offer. You can also control the system with the rotary controller that is present in the center console, making it easier for the driver to use while behind the wheel. Many connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, AUX, USB, etc are standard too. The audio experience showcased by the 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system turned out to be the best of the lot too, with punchy bass and clear vocals. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer are:

  • Extended Merino leather upholstery on seats
  • Anthracite Alcantara headliner
  • Illuminated door-sill finishers with ALPINA designation
  • Expanded Check Control vehicle monitor system

Alpina fits the XB7 with standard 21-inch wheels and all-season tires, but our example wore gigantic, narrow-spoke 23-inchers - Thecarconnection

If all you get is a glance at the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7, you would probably pass it off as the BMW X7 since the former is based on the X7. However, when you look closely you will start to notice the subtle difference that begins with the front fascia. You get a chrome sill across the bigger and more pronounced front kidney vents along with blue laser light capable automatic LED headlights as standard fitment. Along with that, there are subtle additions of chrome elements and the Alpina badging at the bottom to make the difference clear. The car can also come in 9 exterior colors, chrome wrapped grille, and all of this contributes to the road presence of this luxury SUV.

Move to the side view, and you will notice the neatly integrated roof rails along with the giant 23" alloy wheels that steal the show. The tires have been changed from all-season to Pirelli Summer Performance tires so that the car can stick to the road like glue. The subtle fender flares, heated and powered side mirrors with integrated turn indicators, and a decent length of 203.3" also adds to the character and presence of this SUV. The rear view of the 2021 Alpina XB7 is highlighted by the quad exhaust system, shark fin antenna, integrated rear spoiler, and the LED taillights. The curb weight of 5,860 lbs is also decently low for the segment, helping it in the acceleration times.

Compared to its rivals, the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 looks the bulkiest of the lot. While the Bentayga is essentially a mid-size crossover, it is almost as long as the Alpina XB7 and is marginally wider as well at 79.1". Even the 2021 Rolls Royce Cullinan and the 2021 Maybach GLS 600 also turned out to taller, wider, and longer than the 2021 XB7. 10/10

The Alpina XB7 is loaded with tech, and almost all of it comes as standard equipment. - Edmunds

Some of the safety and driver-assistance features on offer with the 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 are:
