The BMW Alpina B7 represents the epitome of luxury from the world’s most driver-centric carmaker. With its eye for ultra-luxury and a price tag of $143,200, it also makes sure that it comes with a performance befitting its stature. That is made sure by a 4.4L turbocharged V8 which comes married to an 8-speed automatic transmission with AWD as standard. This duo can produce a mind-blowing 600 hp with 590 lb-ft of torque

In the world of ultra-luxury, the BMW Alpina B7 takes on the likes of the Mercedes Maybach S560 and the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The BMW Alpina B7 is mostly reserved for those who do not mind splurging to go for the best. And so, the brand has made sure to make it immensely reliable. The 2020 Alpina B7 has not been rated by J.D. Power yet, however, the 2019 model held a rating of 81 out of 100. So, you can rest assured that the 2021 model will only build on that premise.

The Alpina B7 held a clean streak in terms of recalls but that changed in 2020 when it was recalled due to an inaccessible child seat tether in the rear middle seat. Though this was not a major issue, the 2021 model will correct these faults.

In terms of getting your hands on one, you can expect some great deals (though it would not matter much if you are planning to buy a B7). Depending on the state, local tax laws, and dealer discounts, the final sticker price will vary. The following are the prices you can expect in some major states:

Buying the Alpina B7 is one part of the car buying process. The other part is making sure it remains in pristine condition so that it can offer the same kind of performance every single time you use it. To make sure that happens, you will have to invest some money time and again. The following are the 5-year cost of ownership of the BMW Alpina B7:

About 20% of the saloon’s value goes out the door in the first year of its purchase. And the taxes add another layer of expense which makes the first year as the costliest year in terms of ownership. Though the depreciation slows down in the following years, it is the low taxes in the following years that truly help in bringing the costs down.

Warranty

BMW is considered to be one of the best companies in terms of warranty as the assistance provided by them for the lifetime warranty as well as the elaborate warranty is pretty complete. If you are ever planning to buy a BMW Alpina and thinking about the warranty we can assure you about it that no other cars in its competition will ever provide you as much as this assistance and stats other than the Bavarian.

Criteria

Powertrain warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Further to this, BMW also provides extended warranty coverage that kicks in after the expiration of the standard warranty. The extended warranty can cover your Alpina B7 for an extra period of 3 years or an overall of 100,000 miles whichever is first. There are three tiers of the extended warranty and each tier allows unique benefits with a minor difference in price.

Miles Per Dollar

While some may use the Alpina B7 occasionally, there are also those who will use it as a daily driver. If you are part of the latter type of owners, then you might incur about $2,600 as fuel costs annually considering it runs for 15,000 miles.
Keeping those in mind, you will get about 5.8 miles per dollar, or rather, you will be spending 17.3 cents per mile you cover.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Buying Advice

BMW has kept all things pretty straightforward with the Alpina B7. So, it's best you just add the Luxury Rear Seating Package and the Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package along with the Platinum tier extended warranty. All of these will assure that the saloon will become immensely comfortable and immersive and yet stay covered for a long time to come.

Is buying a used car BMW Alpina B7 a good idea?

While a new BMW Alpina B7 costs nearly 150 grand, you can save a whole lot if you pick it up used or pre-owned. A report says that a used BMW almost costs 47% less than the new one which means you will almost pay $70,000 less if you are planning to buy a used BMW Alpina B7

Though Bimmers are reliable, they are still far from what the Japanese can offer. So, if you plan to pick up the Alpina B7 used, the best year would be 2015, and if you think that it looks too old, you can always get a 2017 or 2016 model. All of these can be picked up for fairly cheap and yet will remain equally opulent.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

For the Alpina B7, you get a well-tuned and mammothly powerful 4.4L turbocharged V8 that delivers 600 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. With an 8 speed automatic transmission as well as a four-wheel-drive the B7 is one of the most smooth and swift vehicles of the segment.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 engine

The power delivery is sublime and the slick-shifting transmission adds spice to already tasteful drive experience. Whether you want to get upfront and personal or ride it out like a king in the rear seat, you can rest assured of a very satisfying experience.

In comparison to the others, the higher-priced Bentley Flying Spur takes the cake owing to its bigger powertrain and better numbers. The Mercedes Maybach S560 seems like a disappointment as it ditches performance in pursuit of luxury. We would have hoped that it came with the AMG S63 powertrain to match up to the others.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 Acceleration And Braking Performance

While the BMW Alpina B7 is a huge and long vehicle, it can surprise you with the swiftness it possesses. The turbocharged V8 is honed to thrill and excite your senses.

Put the saloon on an empty tarmac strip and it will show you what it's capable of. The 2021 Alpina B7 can go from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds while the quarter-mile can come up in 12.5 seconds.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 engine accelerate 0-60 mph just in 3.5 sec.

To complement the acceleration streak, braking is also equally well-honed. The brake pedal is well-weighted and nosedive is at a bare minimum even in panic situations. The Bavarian comes equipped with ventilated disc brakes which can help in stopping the mighty saloon from 60-0 mph in 104 feet. Considering the sheer size and weight of the luxuries, this is a feat in itself.

With its athletic prowess, the BMW Alpina B7 sets the tone for the rest. The Bentley Flying Spur manages to stay head to head with the Bimmer in both aspects of acceleration. The Mercedes Maybach S560 disappoints in all aspects and hence comes in last.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Although being so large and so powerful still, the powertrain provided for the B7 is very fuel-efficient and due to the four-wheel drive train almost 80% of power is projected towards the rear wheel which creates a scenario of low fuel usage, so you can say the 2021 BMW Alpina B7 is not just for showcase and racing but is practical too.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 instrument cluster

The Alpina B7 offers 17 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined. The fuel tank is slightly on the smaller size at 20.6 gallons which allows you to get about 412 miles overall.

When pitted against the rest, the B7 wins yet again with its fuel-efficient approach. The Bentley Flying Spur is the true gas guzzler with its W12 powertrain. The Mercedes Maybach S560 sits in the middle on account of falling short on the city economy.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Interior

8.0/10

Enter into the cabin of the Alpina B7 and a whole world of ultra opulence and luxury is held in store. From premium Nappa Leather upholstery on all surfaces to immense usage of wood inserts, you get all you pay for and more. For the headliner, you get an option between panoramic LED sunroof, Alcantara in the upholstery color, and the usual premium soft-touch cloth.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 front seat

The seats are immensely comfortable in both rows and you get massager capabilities in all seats. Furthermore, the long size it comes in, you can’t fault it for spaciousness. Folks even taller than 6 feet can easily find a comfortable sweet spot in terms of seating.

In comparison to the rest, the BMW Alpina B7 takes the cake yet again. The next in line is the Bentley Flying Spur which also packs an equal amount of luxuries along and comforts but it takes a major hit in terms of cargo capacity. The Mercedes Maybach has slightly less legroom than the rest in the back but it has the most headroom in the front. It also has ample cargo capacity which works as a saving grace.

The notable features of the cabin are:

  • Nappa Leather Upholstery
  • Wood/Aluminum/Ceramic Inserts
  • Alcantara headliner
  • LED Panoramic Sunroof (optional)
  • Four-Zone Climate Control with Interior Air Filtration and last setting memory
  • Multifunction and Heated Steering wheel with Tilt and Telescopic Adjustment
  • Heated and Ventilated Front Seats
  • Heated and Ventilated Rear Seats (optional)
  • Lounge Seats for the Rear (Optional)
  • Spa Massager Seats for the Rear (Optional)
  • Alpina Badging on all surfaces
  • Floor Mats with Alpina emblem

  • Seat Memory
  • Extended Ambient Lighting with auto-dimming Interior courtesy lights
  • Front map lights
  • Rear Reading Light with separate controls for left and right

With such an elaborate list of features and creature comforts, you will find it quite difficult to fault it for anything in particular. The only additions you will ever need are the Luxury Rear Seating Package and the Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package to make it wholesome.

How’s the 2021 BMW Alpina B7’s infotainment system?

The Bavarians have made sure that after a long day, you get the comfort of entertainment not just in the front seat, but also in the rear seat as well. The ride comes with an iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, with the traditional iDrive control. A 10.3-inch touch screen display is in place to function as the primary unit and is supported by a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Surround System system.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 dashboard

The other features of the system are:

  • 12.3-inch digital Black Panel Display with LCD main and trip odometer
  • 10.25-inch central infotainment touchscreen
  • 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System with 464W output
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite Navigation with Real-Time Traffic
  • 2-USB Ports with 2.1A charging ports
  • Drive Recorder
  • Wireless Charging (Qi Standard)
  • HomeLink
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Anti-Theft FM
  • HD Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • Gesture Control
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • BMW TeleServices
  • BMW Connected App and Concierge Services
  • ConnectedDrive Services

If the present system seems crippled to you, you can spend the big bucks and get the Rear Seat Entertainment System and the top of the line Bowers and Wilkins Premium Sound setup. With these add-ons, your car will not only be luxurious but have the capability to be a make-shift discotheque.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Exterior

9.9/10

The exterior of the Alpina B7 looks awfully similar to the BMW 7-Series on which it is based. That being said, you get Alpina specific accents and design specs all around the car. It can be likened to a shark with the class and panache of a high rider. The massive kidney grille is supported by sharp LED lights, deeper splitters, and the aerodynamic body. This not only helps the car to sprint faster but also makes it look more fierce and dynamic.

2021 BMW Alpina B7 third quarter view

The sides are lower and pressed into the overall chassis well, while it rides on large 20 inches wheels which adds more muscle and sharpness to the overall look of it. The chrome accents have been incorporated into the build very subtly and make sure that it gives off the look of a 150 grand vehicle along with its mighty build

As you move over to the back, besides the badging, the noticeable differences are the Alpina signature chrome detailed quad-exhaust pipes and the immensely subtle reworked rear diffuser. There are also some Alpina specific color schemes that can quite visibly stand out in a crowd of 7-series.

The most unique features of the exteriors are:

  • 20/21-inch Alpina Classic Alloy Wheels with all-season or performance tires
  • LED Headlamps with DRLs and Laserlight
  • LED Taillamps
  • Chrome Accent finishes
  • Alpina Signature Quad-exhaust tips
  • Alpina Special Color schemes
  • Heated and Power Adjustable Side mirrors with turn signals
  • Auto-dimming Side mirrors
  • Specially designed Alpina style front apron, front diffuser, and rear diffuser
  • Soft Close automatic door operation
  • Automatic Headlight Control
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Through-loading system
  • Ground-illuminating lights in the exterior door handles
  • Extended Ambient Lighting

Since the exteriors are pretty well built and inclusive, you might not need any customizability besides choosing the color and the size of the wheels. A thing to note is that in most cars, as you move up to bigger wheels, the ride gets stiffer, but the Alpina B7 remains the same comfortable self as the smaller sized wheels.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Safety

Almost all the safety features from the 7-series have added to the 2021 BMW Alpina B7, and then some. The overall enhanced chassis of the Alpina provides more stiffness and steadiness compared to its previous models. The safety measures equipped in the brand new Alpina are:

  • BMW’s Active Protection System
  • Front and rear Head Protection System
  • Rear-view camera
  • Active front headrests
  • 12-dual stage SRS Airbags
  • LATCH
  • Active knee protection
  • Parking assistant plus

Opulent saloons like the Alpina B7 are considered pieces of art (which they actually are). And so, they are not tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. For the 2021 model, we don’t see an exception happening. That being said, if the ride is ever tested, it is sure to perform quite well, hence ensuring the safety of the passengers.

BMW Alpina B7 vs Mercedes-Benz Maybach S560

The Mercedes Maybach S560 has long stood in the vanguard and symbol of ultra-luxurious chariots that are reserved for those with the taste for the finer things in life.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S560

The S560 is luxurious, comfortable, spacious, and with the Maybach badge, insanely luxurious (you can get a private fridge for champagne). That being said, it loses out from the Alpina B7 in terms of spaciousness, performance, and most importantly, the price which is higher than the Bavarian.

BMW Alpina B7 vs Bentley Flying Spur

If you have ever been mesmerized by the British standards of luxury, then the Bentley Flying Spur is definitely one to look out for. Decked up with luxuries from top to bottom, it is the most powerful of the lot and also the most luxurious.

2021 Bentley Flying Spur

While mere mortals might just keep lusting for it, the Flying Spur packs all the immersive luxuries in a classy and tasteful manner. That being said, all of this comes at a price that is much higher than the Alpina B7.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Final Verdict

If you want to make sure that you can announce your arrival in style and yet get bang for the buck for your money, then the 2020 BMW Alpina B7 is surely worth venturing a look. It is luxurious, comfortable, powerful, practical, and most importantly technologically advanced.

All of this at a package that costs less than many others makes the deal a whole lot sweeter and hence allows you to truly immerse yourself in the experience of a lifetime.
