2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Features

The BMW 8 Series Convertible is offered in two trims the base 840i convertible and 840i Xdrive convertible.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible third quarter view

The only difference between these two is drivetrain; the former is a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) whereas the latter is an all-wheel-drive (AWD). Apart from this, there is no difference between the two trims.

  Dynamic damper control

The base trim priced at $101,625 comes with RWD drivetrain, Active kidney grille, Sport exhaust system and 12 speakers premium Harman Kardon Surround sound system. Both the trims have the same features and mechanism and we can say both are a carbon copy of each other except the drivetrain.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

In general, BMWs are very reliable cars and the 840i continues with the trend. The German standard has been well maintained by BMW in the 8 series to justify its position and worth in the market.

Reliability and Ownership costs

As mentioned earlier, BMW’s are always reliable and trustworthy. If you are buying a BMW then there is no need to sweat over its reliability too much, as they have been featured in the top 5 reliable brands many times. Coming from the brand top-end lineup, 840i convertible is surely a reliable choice. JD Power has given the 8 Series a predicted reliability rating of 3 out of 5. The 2020 model was reviewed by JD Power and it received an overall score of 83 out of a hundred.

Talking about ownership costs BMW’s have been a bit on the costlier side than the others in the market but they are always worth the money you spend on them. The 840i convertible is costlier than most of its rivals but the offerings are also higher than its rivals which make it competitive and worth it. The annual maintenance of the 840i convertible is around $1200 to $1600 which is slightly higher than Mercedes or Audi but doesn’t make any difference in overall ownership cost as the owner has to shell out some money on maintenance of such performance-based and luxurious cars.

On average, a BMW 840i convertible will cost you over $100,000 (Which includes all additional fees) and any car under this segment will cost nearly the same. The above table shows the price for the 840i Xdrive variant for the previous years. The prices for the 2018 and further are not available because the second generation 8 series were only introduced to the market in 2019 after a 10-year break.

BMW offers 4 years or 50,000 miles of warranty whichever occurs first, moreover, it also offers 24/7 roadside assistance and towing to the nearest BMW dealer. The warranty provides free replacement of parts and complimentary services at regular intervals. Apart from this Corrosion warranty is offered for a duration of 12 years with no restriction on miles.

Powertrain warranty

4 years or 50,000 miles

BMW dealers also offer an extended warranty that covers your vehicle for 3 years and 50,000 miles more than the standard warranty that brings to a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles of warranty. It is advised to buy an extended warranty as BMW’s parts are costly and the money spent on buying a warranty is better than spending later on costly parts.

Miles per Dollar

In this we will be factoring the annual maintenance cost and how many miles the car runs on average in a year. However, we do not have the data for the annual maintenance figures for the BMW 8-Series Convertible, but we are expecting it to have a very high mile to dollars ration.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Buying Advice

We recommend you go for the AWD version as it provides better acceleration and torque figures. Among the competition, 840i has a better value proposition and comes with better reliability.

Is buying a used BMW 8 Series Convertible a good idea?

BMW 8 Series depreciates fast than its rivals and has a lower resale value. Being the top-end model, ownership costs are way too expensive. Buying a used 8 Series is not a good idea as it burns more money from your pocket in terms of maintenance and repair costs. So, it is always good to go for a new one.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Engine and Performance

The BMW 840i houses a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine which generates 335hp and 368 lb.-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed sports automatic gearbox which delivers the power to the wheels very efficiently.

The transmission is well calibrated and does not feel clunky as it used to be. There is also a presence of paddle-shifters, which come mounted on the steering wheel, for the times, the enthusiast within you demands more than just a regular shot of thrill.

331 lb.-ft @ 1,950 rpm

367 lb.-ft @ 2,000 rpm

While comparing the BMW 840i with rivals, the power produced by the 840i falls short and is lowest of all but when it comes to torque 840i is the boss. Although you cannot term 840i an angry monster or a beast it is just a car with average figures. The inline 6 engine is just okay for the 840i, and some changes could have easily made it better than the others.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Acceleration and Braking Performance

The BMW’s 3 Liter engine enables 840i to sprint and touch the 60mph mark in just 5.0 sec from idle. The figures for 840i are good. However, not great as there are cars in the segment which give better figures than that of 840i.

2021 BMW 8-Series Convertible

The braking performance of the 8 series is also on the bright side stopping the vehicle from 60-0MPH in just 110ft.

The Bavarians have put a lot of effort into building the 8 series but just fall short while competing with the rivals. If we consider the 0-60 timings, then 840i is the slowest of all and even in the quarter-mile, the results are the same. All these drawbacks of 840i clearly leave a lot of room for improvement.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Fuel Economy

The BMW 840i is surely going to give you a ride filled with excitement and thrill but at the same time, it will also keep your pockets safe with its low fuel demand. The 840i manages to churn out 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, a combined mileage of 24, which is pretty good for a car giving such performance.

This is where BMW 840i stands undefeated; the mileage given by 840i is better than all its rivals making it the most fuel-efficient car in the segment. The fuel capacity of 18 gallons is good enough to have a long ride with only a few stops at fuel stations.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Interior

The cabin of 840i is surely a nice place to be in; the interior is so well designed that it looks luxurious as well as aggressive at the same time. The interior of 8 series cars has become the face of the Bavarian’s hard work and dedication towards their cars. Furthermore, talking about interior space, the front row has an ample amount of space that allows you to stretch your hands and legs to the fullest without any hindrance.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Rear seat

The seats are well cushioned and ventilated for the comfort of the occupants and are covered with Nappa or Merino leather upholstery giving it a decent yet attractive look. The cabin is soundproof, and occupants feel relaxed and cozy inside the cabin. Although the company claims that 840i has a seating capacity of four but practically it seems difficult for four grownups to sit and have a ride in the 840i. The space in the second row can barely occupy children so accommodating adults is out of the question.

The space offered by 840i is equivalent to its rivals and no huge difference is visible between them except for the BMW and Porsche having a rear seat. Furthermore, the interior of BMW feels more appealing than the others and this is all because of premium craftsmanship which goes missing in the others. However, Porsche and Jaguar offer a blend of color tones in the interior to make it look sportier than the 840i.

2021 BMW 8 Series Convertible Competition

2021 BMW 840i Convertible V/S Jaguar F Type P380-R

These two cars are better in their aspects. Still, if you compare these two cars then Jaguar comes out to be a more powerful and dynamic sports car than BMW whereas the latter is more reliable and efficient with wider and longer dimensions than Jaguar. Jaguar thrills you with the speed and performance whereas BMW provides you with smoothness and better ride quality. The one big advantage which Jaguar has is the price, Jaguar F Type is nearly $12,000 cheaper than 840i convertible. Still, both are good cars and it all depends on the needs and preferences of the buyer.

2021 jaguar F Type P380-R Convertible

2021 BMW 840i Convertible V/S Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

These two cars have a good history of rivalry and have always given a tough fight. As we know, performance-wise Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is better than BMW 840i Convertible and 911 gives you more thrill and sporty feeling than 840i. The 911 is a bit on a compact side whereas 840i convertible has a wider and bolder stance. The mileage of the 840i is better and the ownership cost is low when compared with 911. Although Porsche is a reliable car 840i can be trusted more in the long run. If you are a performance freak and more into sports cars, then 911 is surely your taste and if efficiency and class are your taste then 840i will surely suit you.
