2021 BMW 2 Series Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

The BMW 2 Series is a two-door rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that is underpinned by the old-generation 1 Series platform. Just like the 4 Series and the 6 Series, the 2 Series dives into the sporty land and takes a different approach from the regular BMW 1 Series. The new 2021 model marks the end of a legend. The same formula continues for the new BMW 2 series as well. That means power comes from a 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The BMW 2 Series feels nostalgic. The two-door and rear-wheel-drive layout mated to a manual gearbox reminds of the OG E30 3 Series. New age BMWs have lost their old-school charm. They are now bigger and heavier and the performance feels restricted by a leash but fortunately, that’s not the case with the BMW 2 Series coupe. The miniature 3 Series is a hoot to drive, even in the non-M-spec and yes, it does get a manual which is unheard of in this day and age. The base 4-cylinder engine complements the chassis and performs beautifully. For the ultimate driving pleasure, one can go for the more powerful M240i or the full-fat M2 competition.

The regular 230i coupe competes with the likes of Mercedes Benz CLA and the Audi A3.

2021 BMW 2 Series Pricing and Features

6.5/10

The BMW 2 Series is offered in only one trim and that is the 230i. As standard, the power flows to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox and is priced at $35,900 which is a $600 bump over the 2020 asking price. For all-weather capabilities, the xDrive AWD system is available at a premium of $2,000 over the base price.

As it is just a single trim, the 230i trim comes as standard with a ton of features that make life much easier for the driver and its occupants such as a 6.5-inch infotainment display with iDrive and inbuilt navigation. New for 2021 is the addition of Apple CarPlay and BMW connected services as a part of the standard equipment.

2021 BMW 2 Series Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

BMW cars are known to be driving enthusiast’s top choice. They are beautifully designed and are luxurious on the inside, everything a person would want from a car. But when it comes to reliability, it haunts the German brand to this day. BMW cars are well-built but they are not the most reliable cars out there. They are expensive to own and not that cheap to maintain and repair either. With that being said, BMW cars require unmatched attention when it comes to maintenance and if looked after with love and care, these cars can last a lifetime or two. The same goes for the new BMW 2 Series.

New-age BMW powertrains are powerful, efficient, and reliable at the same time and that is the reason why Toyota, the Mecca of reliability, chose the B58 and the B48 engines for its new GR Supra along with the ZF 8-speed gearbox. These engines are known to be ultra-reliable and bulletproof when it comes to extracting additional power from the stock engine.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The BMW 2 Series coupe is built on the previous-generation 1 Series hatchback. It is a gem of a platform and can handle a ton of power and torque, as seen with the M2 Competition. New BMWs tend to be light on the pocket as the built quality is right up there with the best of the segment so initial ownership should not burn a hole in your pocket. The motor and gearbox combination is not new either so it should be easy to get hold of spare parts for your 2 Series. BMWs thick after-sales network is a great boon for the owners as well.

As seen from the table, maintenance and repair costs are almost nothing for the initial two or even three years. It is only the fuel cost that one has to bear and that depends on the driving style. With that said, BMW cars do depreciate fast especially in their initial years.

Warranty

BMW offers a well-defined safety net for the 2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe in the form of a comprehensive warranty package which includes a limited warranty and a powertrain warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles. Along with the regular warranty, BMW also offers a complimentary maintenance service schedule for 3 years or 36,000 miles which is better than both of its competitors. Extended warranty if available is highly recommended.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Complimentary maintenance service schedule

3 year/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

In comparison, Audi offers a similar limited and basic powertrain warranty to what BMW offers for its 2 Series but the A3 gets just 1-year coverage for complimentary maintenance service. Mercedes Benz does not offer the latter in any of its cars.

Miles Per Dollar

According to the table above, we can see that it costs $2,096 for the fuel for a run of 15,000 miles which is again an average for the first year. Considering the costs, the BMW 2 Series Coupe should be able to cover 7 miles per dollar.

2021 BMW 2 Series Buying Advice

The BMW 2 Series Coupe should appeal to the driving enthusiast in you. It is not the roomiest when compared with its competitors but it offers amazing drivability, superb build quality and it undercuts most of its competitors when it comes to price and ownership costs. The Bimmer is the only coupe to get a stick shift here. Rear-wheel powered variants should be our pick of the lot.

Is buying a used BMW 2 Series Coupe a good idea?

BMW introduced minor updates and new models every other year to get the sales going but the updates were only restricted to interior updates or some exterior aesthetic design updates. In terms of performance, older 2 Series Coupes are equally competent and should be a decent bargain compared to the new one. With that said, older models lose out on a lot of standard equipment. A used 2019 BMW 2 Series makes a lot of sense as BMW introduced a suite of standard safety features.

2021 BMW 2 Series Engine and Performance

8.1/10

The baby Bimmer is powered by a 2.0L inline 4 turbocharged engine coded as B48. The motor is not new and can also be found under the hood of the 3 Series. The engine is a silky smooth unit that delivers power in next to zero lag. Throttle response is mega considering it is a turbocharged unit and it never runs out of grunt. Right from the get-go, the little 230i pounces ahead and with aggression

As standard, the 2 Series Coupe comes with a six-speed manual transmission which is a highlight for the Bimmer as it is the only manual transmission in the segment. The gearbox feels like a typical BMW manual unit. Gates are well defined and the throw is nice and short which enhances the sporty appeal of the coupe. With that said, it is not the smoothest gearbox around, certainly not as good as the one found in the Porsche Boxster or even the Civic Type R. An 8-speed automatic transmission is also available which works flawlessly.

2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe has 2L Engine

Both Audi A3 and the Mercedes Benz CLA are powered by 2.0L turbocharged engines but the Audi makes much less power of just 182 hp and thus feels the slowest of the bunch. The CLA is a cracker of a sedan but it can’t match with the rear-wheel-drive nature of the Bimmer and neither does it have a manual transmission.

2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe Acceleration And Braking Performance

Off the line, the performance is outstanding considering it is the base 2 Series. The engine produces a dollop of torque down in the rev range which gives it an edge over its competitors. As standard, the 230i comes with dedicated launch control which shoots the coupe to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. Spec xDrive and you can shave off another one-tenth. Be it the manual or the automatic, the 2 Series can haul through its gears rapidly and in a straight line, it can do a top speed of 144 mph.

Mercedes Benz CLA 250 takes 6.2 seconds to reach 60 mph from rest. It is more than 20 horsepower down on the Bimmer and sends its power to the front wheels and thus loses traction in the front at full wack. The Audi A3, on the other hand, takes ages to reach 60 mph, thanks to an underpowered engine mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox which restricts power for a few milliseconds to preserve the life clutches and other mechanical components.

2021 BMW 2 Series Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The BMW 230i is exactly opposite to what one might expect in terms of fuel efficiency. It is a hoot to drive and its engine begs to be revved and pushed hard and still it manages to return 34 mpg out on the highway which is quite impressive considering the performance it has on offer. BMW engines tend to be sporty and eager to rev and at the same time supremely frugal too.

Here, the Mercedes Benz CLA and the Audi A3, both are as efficient as the Bimmer yet the 2 Series has an upper hand as it produces more power and is the only rear-wheel-drive manual coupe in the segment.

2021 BMW 2 Series Interior

8.3/10

The 2021 model receives no updates on the inside. That means, it still continues with a well-designed and ergonomic cabin wrapped around in plush materials. The dashboard looks similar to previous-generation models of fellow BMW cars as the basic design dates back to 2015. It does look a bit dated but you just can’t fault the fit and finish and the build quality of panels as well as the switchgear, it all feels premium. M-sport package lifts the mood of the cabin with additions like a sporty M-performance leather-wrapped wheel and M-contrast stitching along with certain M-embossed panels on the dashboard.

The cabin is pretty spacious upfront and gets comfy and accommodating seats for all body types, at least in the front. Being a two-door coupe, rear cabin space is on a tighter side. Along with the passenger space, the cabin is low on nifty little storage spaces which is a bummer.

Behind the rear seats, however, the 2 Series is packing a solid boot. It is more than what the CLA and Audi A3 has to offer and has a usable and practical design. With that said, the second row in the CLA and the A3 is more accessible than the Bimmer but the headroom is on a lower side in the Mercedes due to sloping roof design.

Infotainment System

As standard, the BMW 230i gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen that sits in the middle of the dashboard. The whole dashboard is slightly tilted towards the driver which enhances the driver-centric feel of the cabin. In-built navigation and Apple CarPlay is a standard fitment, still no word on Android Auto connectivity.

2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe Infotainment Display

The display can be upgraded to an 8.8-inch display with the latest-generation iDrive system. It is still one of the best infotainment systems on the market. Damn easy to use and super intuitive in the way all the menus and controls are laid out. There’s no fully configurable digital driver’s display which can be a pro or a con depending on the driver’s taste.

2021 BMW 2 Series Exterior

7.0/10

The BMW 2 Series is heavily inspired by the modern-classic and ultra-rare BMW 1M. It is short and stands wide with those wide haunches at the back and yet it has the classic BMW look with a long hood and short tail end. It is one of the best-designed compact sedans out there. The smaller wheelbase makes it a corner-carving monster, be it the coupe or even the convertible.

At the front, it sports a typical BMW kidney grille and here it is designed proportionately.

The side profile is typical BMW as the window line inclines slightly giving it a sporty stance.

At the back, the 230i gets a twin-barrel exhaust tip finished in chrome along with all-LED taillamps.

Mercedes Benz CLA 250 has the longest wheelbase and is the widest of the three compact sedans here which translates to the most legroom on the inside. With that said, it is not the tallest sedan and thus suffers from a tight headroom.

2021 BMW 2 Series Safety

7.0/10

BMW 2 Series comes loaded with an extensive list of standard safety features. NHTSA safety ratings are not available at the moment but the 1 Series fared well in the test so we can expect the 2 Series to perform well too.

Some of the safety features on offer are:

  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Seat-mounted front side-impact airbags
  • Parking Assist
  • Driver's and passenger's front airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with dual-threshold and dual-stage deployment
  • Front and rear Head Protection System (HPS)
  • Knee airbags for driver and front passenger
  • Automatic-locking retractors (ALR) on all passenger safety belts
  • LATCH attachments for child-restraint safety installation
  • Coded Driveaway Protection
  • Anti-theft alarm system

2021 BMW 2 Series Competition

9.0/10

2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe Vs Mercedes Benz CLA

The Mercedes Benz CLA is one of the cheapest new Mercedes on sale right now and brings a lot of premium and super-sophisticated technology at a respectable price. The second-gen CLA is one of the best looking cars in its segment and attracts a ton of attention out on the road which cannot be said for other cars in a similar price bracket. Performance is plenty and the chassis feels sporty as well. Compared to the Bimmer, the CLA is miles ahead in terms of cabin’s look and feel. It brings the S-class inspired twin-digital display along with highly premium materials all-around the cabin.

2020 Mercedes Benz CLA

2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe Vs Audi A3

Audi’s smallest sedan is also one of the oldest compact sedans in this competition and it feels the oldest of them all. Under the hood, the Audi A3 loses out on precious horses as the 2.0L turbocharged engine only produces 180 odd horsepower. With that said, the A3 is one of the most practical compact sedans here and on the inside, it's a typical Audi affair.

2020 Audi A3

2021 BMW 2 Series Final Verdict

8.2/10

The BMW 2 Series is a dying breed. Front engined, rear-wheel-drive and a manual transmission with over 240 horsepower, these stats can attract any motoring enthusiast. 2021 is speculated to be the last model year for this 2 series which then will be replaced by a front-wheel-drive powertrain. Not just the performance, it scores big on practicality as well and it is priced super aggressively. The baby Bimmer is worth shortlisting.

First BMW

Pros - Performance, performance, performance

Cons - Little uncomfortable rear seats

Tapping the pedal always results in a grunt and this grunt never happens to be unescorted. It can speed up in no time and stop even quicker. Cruising at 80 on a freeway is just another day for this 2 series coupe. One of my favourite features is voice command, it understands what I? saying and quickly responds. Most of the ameneties are dedicated to the front row and the second row is just to check the box on the papers unless you have kids who might enjoy the shorter head and legroom No improvements needed in the overall design and styling. With such performance, the brakes are equally impressive and always exceeds my expectations Overall it? very reliable and safe to drive on the road. I couldn? get a better car for this price of $43,100. They offered me coffee and never rushed into things

everyday challenge!

Pros - Advanced safety features, potent acceleration, and comfortable interior.

Cons - Insufficient MPG, body roll, no paint protectio

Test drove it and found this BMW 2 series sporty and equally practical. The mpg isn't the best which is understandable along with the body roll which isn't. It's not able to take the corner well (or at least how I would have expected) The technologies which are there are pretty new, yet now I didn? encounter any issues with the software in it. Interior is very nicely crafted, and the seats are pretty comfortable. It has good legroom and the design overall looks premium too 100% perfection, stunning, and damp hot design. So needs the paint protection film I like all driver assistance features like the side mirror lighting feature, and backup camera to drive safe on the road. The BMW brand is extremely loyal to the customer and I? also happy with the performance. Financially purchasing this type of costly vehicle is a big deal but I bought it for a fair price and got the quickest approval The dealer helped to get the right one. Customer service is very informative.

Entry level just for the name!

Pros - Driving modes, red upholstery and paint on the outside, parking assist

Cons - Back seat space, no options for carbon fiber trim

2 Series surely got us what we needed. I usually drive alone for which it is just perfect. The power comes at a tap and the stability is just amazing. Won't call it a family hauler since its not The dash trim only has wood grain options and no carbon fiber actually. Love the drivig modes though which entirely changes the driving dynamics The interiors are not the best in class nor the worst either. Just like any other couple with 4 seats (or two if comfort is the in question) and the outward visibility is great BMWs have always had the best built quality and the 2 series is no different here. Does the parking for you if that's what you call safe Happy with the monthy price, mpg, and the entire driveability Not sure about the sticker price but we got a discount on it Undoubtedly the best car buying experience even if they didn't offer the discount which they did without asking
