2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: July 13, 2020

It is a typical mindset that whenever you would want a sportscar, your heart knows that you have to compromise on the luxury front. This notion is pretty common considering the likes of Lamborghini, Mclaren, Ferrari and many such brands, that talk in six figures and still fail to give you the charm of an opulent cabin.

Enter 2020 Bentley Continental GT - a charismatic sportscar that prioritizes your comfort, yet manages to give you the chills that you’d ask from a performance coupe. Moreover, the Continental GT mimics the hardcore sportscars pretty good. How you ask? Well, its got two doors, a 12-banger under the hood and offers spine-chilling performance when asked for. All of that backed up with a sweet roar from the exhaust that throws the statement of your arrival miles ahead of you. With that thought, let’s move ahead, shall we?

The 2020 Continental GT is offered in two avatars. One with a V8 under the hood, while the other one uses the W12 powertrain carried over from the Mulsanne Speed. Since there’s a lot of difference between the V8 and the W12 Continental(s), we have covered both of them as separate vehicles.

Having said that, the W12 variant is a lot faster and is an extensive fuel-guzzler as well. However, you cannot expect it to be as quick as its rivals, but the Bentley has an upper hand with its extensive and extravagant feature-list, which remains unmatched. With the prices for the base-spec W12 starting at $218,900, the Bentley extends the challenge to the likes of Aston Martin DB11, Rolls Royce Wraith, and Mclaren GT. Let’s move ahead and put things into motion.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Features

8.0/10

The 2020 Bentley Continental GT is offered in just one trim - W12. Indicating the number of cylinders under the hood, this trim comes standard with all the quirks and features that you expect from a $200k car. Unlike its less expensive V8 trim, the W12 offers better alloy wheels and more chrome elements to set it apart from the segment.

Though there is no shortage of features, Bentley also offers a plethora of options to add some exclusivity to your pick. However, if you even consider any of these options, you’re vaguely looking at a price bump of around $50k-60k over the MSRP of the car.

Key Features 12.3-inch floating touchscreen Real-time weather display

  Full LED matrix-headlamps
  Alcantara headlining
  4 seat configurations
  1,500-Watt 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system

We recommend

Since the 2020 Bentley Continental W12 is bundled as a single trim, there’s no scratching your head here. However, if you still do not feel content with the standard equipment, you can always add more features of your choice, of course for extra money.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Engine and Performance

8.5/10

Under the hood, there’s no significant update with the 2020 iteration of the Bentley Continental GT as such. It still uses the same twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter, W12 motor that gives you a leash over 626 horses that pull this 2-door chariot with a force of 664 lb-ft. This 626 HP of power is directed to all four wheels via 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe has 8-speed dual-clutch Automatic Transmission

Good news for the purists here, as unlike Rolls Royce Wraith, this British Gran-Tourer also gives you a manual control on the gearbox via steering-mounted paddle shifters. The shifts are seamless and the Continental GT seems to be very eager off the line. The W12 motor is pretty sonorous and there is plenty of power all over the rev-band - thanks to the twin-turbochargers that contain the lag efficiently.

The Wraith emerges out to be the one with the biggest motor under the hood, however, when it comes to the power figures, it falls short of the competition. The Bentley Continental GT has the class-leading torque figure that also kicks in at a very low rpm. The DB11 churns out the maximum number of horses and leads the pack in this aspect. However, this story might take a turn once the weight of the vehicles are considered.

How fast is the Bentley Continental GT?

The Bentley Continental’s W12 motor under the hood inspires it to the 60MPH mark in a respectable 3.6 seconds. If you aim for the quarter-mile mark, this luxury sportscar takes 11.6 seconds to breach the finish line. As impressive as it is, let’s admit, the Bentley Continental GT is not just about luxury but equally capable performance too, unlike some of its more expensive rivals.

The acceleration is linear and the peak torque kicking it at low RPM enables a ballistic start off the line - thanks to the stupendous balance of the electrical safety systems that contain the torque steer and ensure availability of maximum friction to the tires. The seamless shifting 8-speed gearbox is a cherry on the cake and it gets even sweeter once you take manual control.

Well, when there’s Mclaren in the comparison, barely would you see any other car overpowering it when it comes to acceleration figures. The others might be fast or more luxurious, but they need more than just a good motor under the hood to challenge the blisteringly quick - The Mclaren GT.

While the likes of Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Aston talk about 0-60 MPH north of 3.5 seconds. This peppy little GT car from Mclaren does the same feat in under 3-seconds. Talk about performance!

What about the braking performance of the Bentley Continental GT?

A 5,000-pound vehicle that carries 12 cylinders under the hood should be pretty hard to bring to a halt. However, this is not the case with the 2020 Bentley Continental GT. To serve the braking purpose, the Continental GT sports the biggest rotors in the segment. With a 16.5-inch rotor discharging duties at the front, the Bentley feels sure-footed and the steering stays rock solid even under panic braking situations.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe has a 16.5 in. of Front Brake

The feel from the brake pedal is also confidence-inspiring and the bite from the brake pads is gradual. It doesn’t surprise with snatchy bites that are prominent in many of its rivals. If we had to complain, the Bentley Continental’s electrical assist systems are a little too intrusive, but that’s okay. There’s only so much you can do when you expect outright performance from a car that weighs over 5,000 pounds.

Unfortunately, we do not know a lot about the braking details of the said cars. However, with the few details that we have, we believe no one can beat the Mclaren GT in terms of braking, simply because it is way too lighter than its competition. In the case of the other three contenders, the Aston is expected to perform better than the Bentley, but the Rolls Royce stays at the last of the competition considering it has the smallest rotors and the maximum curb weight here in this comparison.

How is the Bentley Continental GT to drive?

The Bentley Continental GT, even with its maddening W12 motor, is one of the most composed sportscars we have ever come across. It can be both, a gentleman and a ninja at the same time. If you’re out for a casual weekend drive, the adaptive air suspension restricts most of the abruptions of the road efficiently, thus, ensuring supreme comfort even by luxury sedan standards. This is something exclusive to the Bentley and the comfort factor keeps diminishing as you move towards the hardcore sports car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Mclaren, and Lamborghini.

The Continental GT also features a 48-volt Active Roll control system that adjusts the air suspension automatically to maintain the stability of the car when you’re tackling the twisties. At spirited speeds, the Continental GT feels sure-footed and throwing this 5,000-pound beast into a corner will surely impress you. There’s enough grip from the tires and steering feedback is phenomenal. You feel connected to the road at all times and you’ll fall in love with the sonorous exhaust note let loose by the fire-breather under the hood.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Fuel Economy

4.0/10

Courtesy of the Cylinder De-activation system, the 2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 can munch 12 miles in a gallon of fuel within the city hassle. Come to the freeways and the number escalates to an impressive 20 MPG, thanks to less engagement of the clutch. With a combined fuel economy of 15 MPG, the Continental GT impresses us even with a 12-cylinder fuel-guzzling motor under the hood.

For those who do not know, the 2020 Bentley Continental GT can disengage 6 cylinders out of the 12 just to churn more out of a gallon of fuel. To put it in other words, the W12 turns into a V6 motor in case you’re not in a mood to go all flat-out on the streets. However, as soon as the Continental senses the thirst for power, it is more than glad to transform into a fire-spitter at any given point of time.

With the biggest tank capacity of the lot, it’s the Bentley Continental GT that requires the least stops at a gas station. However, when it comes to the economy, the Bond Car (Aston) shines the brightest in this regard, locking itself in the first position. The Bentley and the Rolls lineup almost head-to-head for the third place with the former just inching ahead of the latter. This leaves us with the Mclaren GT for the second position.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Interior

9.5/10

When pitted against the test of time, a few brands like Bentley and Rolls Royce have grown on to become a synonym to comfort and luxury. Even with Bentley’s sportiest offering - the Continental GT, this notion seems to prevail with maximum points.

The front seats of this British sportscar are no less than the ones found in many ultra-luxury saloons. Ofcourse, there’s leather all around and it doesn’t end here. In case you want more options on the interior fittings, Bentley also offers a wide array of fabric options to basically curate your own car. However, this optional list also consists of some exotic fitments which build on top of the MSRP of the car.

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Seating

Standard features associated with the comfort of the passengers such as heating, ventilating and power operated adjustability traits are all available here. Furthermore, in case you want the Continental to caress your back while you enjoy the drive, there’s also an optional massaging feature that you can add to your shopping list.

Having said that, the front seats have a wide bench with immensely appropriate thigh support, surrounded by large bolsters on either side. All of these combine to impart a plush feeling and spending hours here won’t bother you at all. However, the rear seats seem more like a formality as the restricting legroom takes away the feel of a “Bentley” and the sloping roofline further spoils the mood. As compared to the Rolls Royce Wraith, the Continental’s rear bench is completely overpowered by the ones in the former and works against the latter’s favor.

Though we do not have the exact numbers for a couple of competitors here, but let’s admit that nothing comes close to the Bentley and Rolls Royce in terms of cabin space. The Aston Martin, though spacious by sportscar standards, fails to match the Bentley. Come to the rear space and there’s no challenging the Rolls Royce Wraith here. The Mclaren GT just stays out of question here with two fewer seats than the competition.

Does the Bentley Continental GT comes loaded with tech inside?

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Infotainment System

Adhering to the innovations in technology being introduced into the automotive world, the Bentley Continental GT complies with this ideology and features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is studded with some class-leading features. Having said that, some of the drool-worthy features associated with the 2020 Continental GT’s infotainment system are:

  • Standard 650 watt, 10-channel, 10 speaker audio system
  • 30 GB hard drive for instant access to map data and more
  • Bluetooth connection to smartphones and tablets with music streaming
  • Heads-up Display
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Sirius XM Integrated satellite navigation
  • Night Vision Camera
  • Apple CarPlay

What are the creature comforts on offer in the Bentley Continental GT?

Apart from the infotainment system, the Continental GT also comes loaded with a slew of features pertaining to the comfort and convenience of the occupants. Some of such extravagant features found in the Bentley Continental’s cabin are:

  • Dual-tone color split interior trim
  • Single-tone, 3-spoke, hide trimmed steering wheel
  • Alcantara headlining
  • Semi-Aniline Leather to Seats and Door Inserts
  • Inductive Phone Charger (Wireless Charging)
  • LED welcome lamps by Mulliner
  • Ambient lighting
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 12-way heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats

What about the Bentley Continental GT’s utility?

The 2020 iteration of the Continental GT is not the best when it comes to offering cargo spaces. With a meager 12.6 cu.ft of volume in the trunk, this British coupe barely manages to match the standards of the segment. However, it does come with its own quirks such as power-operated tailgate which, by the way, can also be operated with its smart key itself.

There are dedicated nets and compartments at the back, just in case you need to hold some precious items. Moreover, since it is a low-slung coupe, the Continental’s tailgate lifts high and loading/unloading factor is further eased out - thanks to its low-set boot lip.

When pitted against the competition, the mid-engined Mclaren GT makes the most of it. Not only is Mclaren’s trunk bigger than the most, but it also provides you another storage area at the front as well. Apart from Mclaren, the Rolls Royce Wraith shines bright too, with the biggest trunk of the lot. The Aston’s 10 cu.ft of cargo capacity just remains out of the league here.

The Continental GT just received a major overhaul last year where it grew longer and wider and also lost some inches from its height. Frankly, the 2020 Continental GT’s road presence as a sportscar might have increased, but with a compromise on the luxury front. Nevertheless, the 2020 Continental GT still stands out of the crowd and you won’t be mistaken with its identity.

The driver now sits a little farther from the front wheels and the increase in track width also translates to a more composed behavior around the curves. There is an increase in the chrome elements on the outside and the auxiliary headlamps have now shrunk in size as opposed to the earlier ones. A similar treatment has been given to the upswept LED taillamps that are further blended neatly into the sloping roofline of the car.

What are the eye-catching features in the Bentley Continental GT?

There’s a reason why you would never get mistaken for a Bentley as it comes with a plethora of unique traits on the outside to set itself apart from the crowd. The 2020 Continental GT is no less as it brings a few design elements of its own that not just add to the character of the car but also adds to the convenience factor as well. Some of these features are:

  • 21” five tri-spoke alloy wheel - painted
  • Full LED matrix-headlamps with High Beam Assist
  • Deployable rear spoiler

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Safety

8.0/10

When you are investing over $200k on a car, especially a fire-breathing coupe that is so fast it makes you question the parameters of time, safety is never a compromise here. And if it’s a Bentley, you won’t have to worry about safety at all. The 2020 Bentley Continental GT is based on its entry-level luxury offering - the Flying Spur which has proven its credibility time and again whenever tested. Borrowing the same underpinnings, the Continental GT has been blessed with a reliable chassis that needs no introduction.

Apart from its robust architecture, the Bentley Continental GT is filled with various driver-assist systems up to the brim, just so you’re always safe. Some of such advanced safety features integrated into the 2030 Bentley Continental GT are:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • 48V Active Roll Control system
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Pedestrian Warning and City Assist
  • Top View Camera (360-degree camera)
  • Active Lane Assist
  • Night Vision camera

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Competition

9.0/10

Bentley Continental GT vs Aston Martin DB11:

Both coming from the same country, the Aston Martin seems more like a dedicated sportscar with a hint of luxury and comfort inside. The Bentley, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. Being in the latter feels more like a luxury sedan with sportscar like dynamics. No doubt the DB11, apart from its James Bond heritage, has a charm of its own, especially the typical V12 groan that stays exclusive to it. However, let’s be practical and Aston’s V12 motor doesn’t behave like one. It is laggy and a little lethargic off the line. Furthermore, the Bentley’s feature-list and creature comfort remain unmatched. Hence, if we had to pick one, we’d gladly go with the Bentley.

2020 Aston Martin DB11

Bentley Continental GT vs Rolls Royce Wraith:

Over the years of their prevalence, the Rolls and Bentley have grown together to become one of the most luxurious brands in the world. Never does it happen that you can discuss a Bentley without talking about the Rolls Royce. Going by the same lines, the Rolls Royce Wraith’s opulence and charisma remain unmatched, especially because of its impeccable interior, tons of passenger volume, and stupendous ride quality which, by the way, doesn’t impart a sports car feel at all. Now if you are actually looking for a coupe that behaves like one, the Wraith’s longer gear ratios and massive road presence don’t really impart that feeling. The Bentley Continental feels more engaging and you won’t have to compromise on the comfort factor as well. Hence, if you need a driver-focused coupe with tons of luxury inside, the Bentley is a better deal especially with its accurate pricing as compared to the Rolls.

2020 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Bentley Continental GT vs Mclaren GT

Be it a GT or any other car to wear the Mclaren badge, the folks at Mclaren ensure that any car you pick remains a suitable weapon for the track as well. Inspite of being a Gran-tourer, the Mclaren GT still remains a track-focused vehicle with a hint of luxury inside. Moreover, it is also a dedicated two-seater GT car as compared to the 2+2 seater Bentley Continental GT. If the Bentley cannot match the sheer performance offered by the Mclaren, then the Mclaren also cannot match the opulence, luxury, and comfort offered by the Continental. To put it simply, both are good at what they do. So it all boils down to your priorities, what do you like more? To arrive faster, or to arrive fancier?

2020 Bentley Continental GT W12 Coupe Final Verdict

Well, that completely depends on what you want. If you want a charming car that not just gets you from point A to B fast, but also with supreme comfort and luxury, then you’re looking for something like the Bentley Continental GT. With class-defining features and sports car performance on the tarmac, the Continental not only imitates the best of sports cars out there but also challenges a few luxury sedans to match the kind of opulence it offers. To put it simply, if you have the kind of silver in your pocket, the 2020 Bentley Continental GT strikes a perfect bang for your buck.
