Available in just a single Trim, the 2020 Audi TT Roadster comes loaded with a host of creature comforts as standard. A 2.0L Inline 4 Turbocharged Motor, is still the workhorse of the TT and you will find it coupled to Audi’s fantastic Quattro AWD System and a 7 Speed Slick Shifting Dual Clutch Transmission. Coming to the changes, you get additional safety features as standard, a New Orange Color scheme and a bigger 20” Alloy wheel as an option. For spoiling the customers, even more, Audi is offering 2 additional packages as options, namely the S Line Competition and the Technology that offers additional features like Leather Seats, bigger alloys, Sportier suspension and a lot more.

Talking of the prices, with not a lot of changes behind it’s back, the 2020 Audi TT Roadster, retails for a MSRP of $49,000 and varies as per your state of residence. In terms of who all go against the Audi, you will find the likes of the Mercedes Benz C 300 Cabriolet, BMW 430i Convertible and the Nissan 370Z Convertible as the stark rivals to the same.

What is the best configuration to go for?

The Audi TT Roadster comes loaded with plenty of features as standard and will satisfy the needs of most of the customers of this Audi. However, we would suggest that customers deck their TT with the S Line Competition package that would add a lot of luxuries to the same without a significant price bump.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2020 Audi TT Roadster stays unchanged mechanically from 2019. This means that you still get a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 Motor under the hood of the TT roadster, good for 220 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque. Transmission duties are performed by a 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic with paddle shifters. The Transmission is slick-shifting, changes gears when you want it to and allows full manual control as well.

2020 Audi TT Quattro Roadster 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine

The Engine itself, may not be the most powerful unit here but the lightweight of the Audi and the Quattro AWD system, makes the TT a surprisingly cheerful car to drive. There is a decent amount of punch on offer, once you get past the Turbo lag. Get the motor above 2500rpm and see the Turbo's spool up power, to give you a sudden push while you crave for the same.

Comparing the TT to its rivals, you will find that the TT is the least powerful among all. The Nissan 370Z Convertible takes top honors as far as numbers go. The Mercedes and the Bimmer are separated by the smallest of margins, with the former beating the latter on the same front.

Is the Audi TT Roadster, a fast convertible?

Surprisingly, Yes. Despite the power deficiency, added convertible setup and lower aerodynamic efficiency and drag, the Audi TT manages to do the 0-60 run in just 5.5 seconds and 14.9 Seconds, for the quarter-mile. Audi credits this to the TT’s low curb weight, the slick dual-clutch transmission and the superb Quattro AWD setup that allows for super-fast takeoff’s from a standstill and great torque distribution on all the 4 wheels.

2020 Audi TT hits 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds

Out on the road, the TT feels punchy to drive and overtaking cars on the motorway, isn’t much of hassle either.

Surprisingly enough, when you compare Audi’s acceleration figures with its other rivals, you will see that the Audi will overtake most of its competitors. The competitors, lag behind the Audi, owing to their heft and their RWD systems that reduce the amount of traction, available at the beginning as compared to an AWD setup. However, Nissan puts it’s big V6 to good use and manages to be faster than the Audi.

How good is the Ride and Handling of the Audi TT Roadster?

One of the biggest factors why people go for the Audi TT Roadster is it’s handling dynamics. The 2020 Audi TT Roadster, doesn’t lose any of its famed handling characters or any of that persona. Audi has used all their expertise of racing throughout these years, in developing and fine-tuning their Quattro system and that is evident in the TT as well. The Grip and Traction levels on offer in the Audi are super impressive and the precise steering and lightweight body, adds to the fun of cornering this little Roadster. The Body roll is very well contained and you won’t have any problems, swerving through traffic out on the motorway.

2020 Audi TT Quattro Roadster front view

Talking of the Ride Quality, it’s mostly on the softer side and despite its sporty credentials, the TT will easily glide over most potholes and undulations with the utmost ease. For customers, who would want a bit more sporty ride from their Audi, can spec the same with the S Line Competition package that stiffens the suspension and adds sportier wheels and some other tweaks to make the ride, even more, fun.

What about the Braking performance?

With the largest ever brakes ever used on a TT, the braking performance of this Roadster is just exemplary in multiple ways. Weighing just 3395 lbs, the Audi TT Roadster, not only impresses on the track but also on the city streets as well with its braking prowess.

2020 Audi TT Quattro Roadster front brake 12.3 and rear 11.8 in

The brake pedal is extremely precise and direct, much like the steering as well. Nosedive is very well contained and the Roadster maintains a straight line under heavy braking.

The braking performance of all the Roadsters listed here can be termed decent when taken into account together. While the Merc and the Bimmer, showcase good stopping figures, the Nissan feels up to the mark as well. However, it’s again the Audi that takes top honors, owing to its AWD system and lightweight nature.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Audi has always impressed with its Turbocharged Motors that have offered a good balance between power and efficiency. The same is the case with the 2020 Audi TT Roadster as well. The low output motor of the Audi, yields its benefits in terms of the MPG figures. With an impressive 26MPG of mileage overall and a 14.5-gallon tank, the 2020 Audi TT Roadster, can do at least 334 miles on a full tank and 450 miles at best. This is impressive, considering that the Audi has a standard AWD setup while the others have an RWD setup.

Taking all Roadsters into perspective, you will find that the C 300, manages to outrun the BMW 430i, in the range department. The Nissan manages to sneak in the 3rd spot here despite it’s lower MPG figures but bigger fuel tank capacity The Audi, despite its superb MPG figures, has to suffice with the last spot.

2020 Audi TT Convertible Interior

8.6/10

Like most modern-day roadsters, the Audi TT allows seating for just 2. Despite this, we feel let down by the comfort on offer from these 2 seats. Don't get us wrong, the Seats offer decent levels of cushioning and contouring and the cabin quality feels upmarket. However, the Convertible Setup takes up the space of the rear seats and hence, you are left with no seats. Hence, unlike the other rivals of the Audi, you are just left with seating for 2 just adults only. The Seats feel devoid of cushioning when compared to what the rivals have on offer and we would have appreciated, a bit more cushioning from the same.

Audi TT Quattro Roadster front seats

With the usage of premium materials on most of the console, you can ignore some of the plastic bits that litter the cabin. Build Quality is something that needs a mention here as it’s top-notch, with very little inconsistencies or panel gaps throughout the cabin.

Comparing the Audi with its rivals and you will find that the German counterparts of the Audi, offer a lot more space on both the front row and on the rear as well. That is because of the larger dimensions of those cars and the relatively smaller ones of the Audi. The Nissan is bigger on space than the Audi despite similar proportions to the Audi but eventually loses out to the other German duo.

How technologically advanced is the Infotainment system of the TT Roadster?

Audi has been constantly updating it’s MMI Infotainment system every year and for 2020, Audi has made improvements to the same as well. You get a slightly more responsive and intuitive system and with all the bells and whistles, that you would want from a Car of this category.

2020 Audi TT Quattro Roadster instrument cluster

You can also get the MMI Plus system and Android Auto, Apple Car Play by upgrading to the Technology package. The Highlights include

  • MMI touch with Handwriting-recognition technology
  • Audi Virtual Cockpit
  • Audi Sound System with 9 Speakers and Single CD Player with MP3 playback capability and dual SD card slots
  • SiriusXM/HD Radio
  • Bluetooth Telephony and Audio
  • Homelink powered Garage door opener
  • Rearview Camera
  • Front and Rear parking sensors

How practical is it in terms of Cargo carrying capacities?

One of the biggest drawbacks or shortcomings that can be attributed to the 2020 Audi TT Roadster, is its cargo-carrying capability. With just 7.5 cu.ft. Of luggage space on offer, the Audi does lag behind its contemporaries in the luggage department owing to a lot of the space being used up by the convertible module. Add to all this, the lack of cubby holes in the cabin and you will find the Audi, best for intra-city commutes.

While all the rivals of the TT Roadster are on the same page when it comes to the storage capacity, it’s the Mercedes that shines the brightest here. The Nissan fails in this respect miserably while the Bimmer manages to squeeze out a tad more space than the Audi.

What about the bells and whistles on the inside?

While Audi has kept storage avenues in the 2020 TT Roadster, to a minimal level, we still think that for daily usage, the available storage options will be enough to do get the job done. Talking of the other interior features on offer, here go the highlights of the same:

  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Auto-dimming Interior Rearview Mirror with Digital Compass
  • Power Windows with Pinch protection

Long gone are the days when the Audi TT looked like a tortoise with wheels, the TT now has sharp stylized lines running along the length of the car and blends in smoothly with the LED Daytime running lights. The tiny Roadster is only 165-inches long, much shorter than even the Porsche 718. However, it sits taller than most of its rivals and hence, has a relatively higher center of gravity.

2020 Audi TT Roadster three quarter view

The compact proportions of the Audi make for a sporty ride irrespective of where you take it. It also allows for ease of parking in crowded parking spaces and maneuvering through tight spaces in the city as well. The flip side is the fact that the Audi isn’t the most spacious on the inside and feels kinda compact.

In terms of comparing these Roadsters, you will find that the German duo of the Bimmer and the Merc are the longest of the lot. In terms of girth, all the Roadsters here have nearly the same girth but it’s the Merc, that you have to be least bothered for scratches when traveling through tight spaces. However, the long wheelbase of the Merc makes it the least sportier of the lot while tackling corners.

Any Eye-catching features?

With the 2020 Audi TT Roadster, Audi has pulled out all stops to ensure that the TT looks modern and sleek from any angle that you look at. That has been made possible by the use of some sharp character lines, all throughout Audi’s body and modern features. Some of the highlights include

  • Rain/Light Sensor for automatic windshield wipers and headlights
  • Fully Automatic LED Headlights
  • LED Taillights with Dynamic Turn Signals
  • Power-Adjustable, auto-dimming, power-folding, heated ORVM’s

2020 Audi TT Convertible Safety

9.9/10

With the growing concern over the safety of passengers in modern-day automobiles, manufacturers are stepping up their game and offering plenty of features as standard on their vehicles. Such is the case with the New TT Roadster as well. Even though IIHS and NHTSA haven’t tested the 2020 Audi TT Roadster, we do have the list of Safety features that the Audi comes loaded with to ensure the peace of mind of the passengers.

Standard Safety Features on offer?

  • Front dual-stage airbags, front thorax side airbags, knee airbags, and head curtain airbags
  • Power Central locking System with safety unlock in case of airbag deployment
  • ABS with EBD, ESC and secondary collision brake assist
  • Anti-Theft alarm system with immobilizer
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • LATCH in rear seats
  • Electromechanical Parking brake

Audi TT Roadster vs. Nissan 370Z Convertible

The Nissan 370Z, may not seem a direct rival to the TT roadster. However, considering the price range and the dimensions of the Nissan, one can’t stop but compare these 2 compact convertibles. Both the Nissan and the Audi have excellent build quality. Both come with a lot of features and pack a punch, in terms of the way they drive. However, the Audi is the thriftier of the duo and feels way more premium to live with on a daily basis. The Nissan, on the other hand, is way more powerful than the Audi and offers little more comfort and convenience than the Audi. So, if you want the VFM convertible, the Nissan will be your best bet, but if you prefer a luxurious ride and the Audi badge, the TT roadster will be the one for you.

2020 Nissan 370Z Convertible

Audi TT Roadster vs. Mercedes-Benz C 300 Cabriolet

In the battle of the Germans, you will find it difficult to choose between one of the 2. However, both cater to different audiences in some ways. The Merc is for those, who would want a comfortable commute from their office to home and vice-versa and be able to ferry your family of 4 with ease. The Audi, on the other hand, is a bit more sporty and is best suited for just 2 adults or 2 adults with 2 children at best. You won’t be disappointed with both of these Roadsters but if comfort is your preference, the Merc should be your choice, otherwise, it’s the Audi that should be your pick.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Cabriolet

Audi TT Roadster vs. BMW 430i Convertible

In this battle of the Teutons, it will be very hard to choose between one of these 2 Roadsters. The BMW is the sharper, more agile and fun to drive Roadster of the duo. It also offers better space for its occupants and looks a bit sportier as well. However, Audi takes the lead in Mileage, comfort, and pricing. You won’t go wrong with buying any of these 2 Roadsters and we can’t exactly pick a clear winner. However, if a sporty Roadster is your preference, the Bimmer will suit you the best but if you want the Jack of all trades, the Audi should be your choice.

2020 BMW 430i Convertible

2020 Audi TT Convertible Final Verdict

The 2020 Audi TT Convertible, is one of those vehicles in the market that offers the fun of a sports car while allowing the roof to be down. The TT feels solidly put together, comes loaded with a host of features and feels premium on the inside. Despite having seating for just 2, the Audi ensures that the occupants of the TT, thoroughly enjoy every moment that spend inside it. The Intuitive Infotainment System and the Excellent handling manners, makes the Audi, a thoroughly fun to drive car. Hence, to sum up, if you plan to take your better half or just a friend to enthusiastic drives on the weekend or commutes from office, the Audi TT Convertible will be a superb choice for achieving those goals.

Strictly taking about the driving, the best part of this Audi undoubtedly would be the handling. The weight distribution is so perfect and the way it carries itself on the turns/corners is just brilliant. Takes off with even more enthusiasm when hitting the gas after a corner.

Common inline 4 under the hood pops out a distinctive exhaust sound that can't be mistaken for something else. It resonates on top of a linear grunt and I love that

Weight distribution on turns

Strictly taking about the driving, the best part of this Audi undoubtedly would be the handling. The weight distribution is so perfect and the way it carries itself on the turns/corners is just brilliant. Takes off with even more enthusiasm when hitting the gas after a corner.
