In the recent times, Audi has taken the luxury automobile market by storm with its slurry of new and redesigned launches. One of the most talked-about and much anticipated launch of the German jumbo was the new sleek-chick A7. The all new A7 is certainly the best looking sportback that one can get right now. However, a 335 hp V6 motor seemed underpowered and the only disappointment that the hearts stumbling upon its steaming curves had. Well, Audi has got them all covered. The 2020 Audi S7 is out here in the States and it is more powerful, meaner and sportier than its predecessor.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

When Audi launched the new A7 in 2018 it received a more than the overwhelming response from the masses. Not only was the popular favorite luxury fastback sedan more seductive than its previous generation but it also sported a more upscale fit and finish along with better tech hardware. The only thing it left Audi Sport fans was for a better and more powerful engine and that's exactly what the new S7 is.

The 2020 S7 debunks it's earlier V8 and now uses a 2.9-liter turbo V6 that is also shared with the RS5 and the new S6. The engine makes 6 fewer horses than the previous V8 but outstrips it with 37 ft-lbs of more torque. Not only is the new S7 more brutal at its core but it is also outspoken with its distinctively sporty visual cues. A lowered suspension, splitter up front, diffuser at the rear, double- slat single frame grille along with added vents and scoops is enough packaging to differentiate the sportier S7 from its regular sibling.

Overall, the 2020 Audi S7 is a very well laid out sporting machine that incorporates all the DNA of Audi Sport, be it on the mechanical or the physical front. It can move you from your home to office and vice versa with sheer opulence and can also tame down some winding tracks on weekends. However, it is not the only product in the market with such sonorous composition. With prices ranging from $83,900, the 2020 S7 shares the turf with some other Europeans like the Mercedes- AMG CLS 53, Porsche Panamera 4S and the Maserati Ghibli.

2020 Audi S7 Pricing and Features

Delighted by the 2020 Audi S7’s overall presentation and planning to drop one into your garage? Well, for that sake you get to choose from two available trims, Premium Plus and Prestige, priced at $83,900 and $89,500 respectively. Powertrain remains the same in both the trims but what doesn't is the list of available goodies and features. The Premium Plus is aptly garnished with superior materials and modern technicalities, but the Prestige pushes the richness even further.

Which trim to choose?

We would suggest to pick the 2020 Audi S7 in the Prestige trim. The S7 is one of those cars that very finely blend style, luxury, and sportiness together. At an extra premium of $5600 over the Premium Plus, the Prestige presents that exotic amalgamation in as best form as it could get.

2020 Audi S7 Engine and Performance

What sets the S7 apart from the regular A7 is its performance coating. To many, the shift from V8 to a V6 might seem like a downsizing but the ferocious V6 has got plenty of surprises enclosed. We are yet to test drive the 2020 S7 but the powertrain on this beauty seems solid enough. With a surge of 109 horses and 74 lb-ft of torque, over the normal A7, the 2020 must be as intimidating on the tarmac as it is on paper.

2020 Audi S7 Sportback engine has 444 horsepower

We already love the engine’s immense pulling power in the RS5 and we expect the engine to bear the same character in the S7. Yes, the 2020 S7 is almost 300 lbs heavier than the RS5, but that shouldn't really hamper its driving dynamics since it encompasses more fine-tuned mechanics as well as better electronics.

The only set back we had with the RS5 was the very small turbo lag during kick-offs, but that shouldn't be the case with its updated elder sibling. The 2020 Audi S7’s engine is escorted by a 48V electric compressor that amplifies low-end torque. The standard 8- speed Tiptronic automatic transmission has been reworked to optimize the engine’s low-end torque and it communicates to the wheels through the revolutionary Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The transmission pairs up with the electric compressor simultaneously to reduce turbo lag and increase throttle response.

How fast is the Audi S7?

Outright acceleration across a straight line from the start is a task very ideal for the 2020 Audi S7. Audi claims a 0-60 miles show of 4.5 seconds which is not the best among its class but is fairly considerable for a vehicle with such a mass. The new 2020 S7 is 0.3 seconds quicker than its predecessor and 0.7 seconds quicker than the regular A7.

2020 Audi S7 Sedan 0-60 MPH in just 4.5 sec

However, the 2020 S6 which gets the same engine but with a lighter body, does the 60-mile sprint in 0.1 seconds less than the S7.

Among the competition, the Porsche Panamera 4S which shares several of its mechanical underpinnings with the S7 turns out to be the swiftest among the lot. Amore balanced body proportions allowing better stability, enhanced aerodynamics and a lighter body allow the 4S to clock from 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds.

What about the Ride and Handling?

On the ride and handling front, the 2020 Audi S7 seems much promising as well. The standard S- tuned adaptive dampers are very well buttoned and allow seamless switching between different drives. Part of the standard package is also the Quattro all-wheel-drive system that comes paired with active torque distribution ensures optimum traction around corners. Also available as an option is the S sport package which features a limited sport differential that further enhances its handling and agility.

For utmost confidence behind the wheel in all driving conditions, equip the 2020 S7 with the available sport suspension along with the S sport package. Apart from the sport differential, the sport package also brings in a four-wheel steering, sport exhaust system and red brake calipers. The sport suspension incorporates a ‘comfortable’ mode for a more relaxed ride and allows the driver to switch between either a sporty or comfortable ride accordingly to the drive select setting.

How does the S& fare on the Braking front?

The 2020 Audi S7 is an all-new model and encompasses a thorough revision of its predecessor. The brakes in this mean machine to have been revised to keep its sky-high ambitions under control. The brakes, on the whole, feel surefooted and confidence-inspiring.

The 2020 S7’s 15.7 inches ventilated discs at the front and 13.8 at the rear are similar in size to the outgoing model but they now get updated electronics for enhanced braking. With numerous tech aids up its sleeve we expect the new S7’s braking performance a bit more improved than its older generation.

2020 Audi S7 Fuel Economy

Fuel economy should not be a concern for those considering a vehicle like the S7 that talks sheer performance. Let aside the spirit, Audi says that the 2020 S7 is good enough to deliver 18 mpg in the city, 28 on the highway and 22 combined.

The fuel output is on par with the class average and is also slightly better than the previous S7’s 21 mpg combined. Among its rivals, the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 is the most promising on the fuel consumption charts. Even with a body that the heaviest among the lot, the Merc delivers a marginally better 23 mpg combined. Thanks to its seamless 9-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

2020 Audi S7 Interior

We already love the A7’s rich and supple interiors and the same driver-centric interior layout has been carried over to the S7 as well. However, resonating with its exterior flair, the 2020 Audi S7 gets standard Valcona leather S sport seats with diamond stitching.

2020 Audi S7 Sedan front seats

With the available luxury package, the S7 can get up to 18-way power individual contour front seats including power lumbar adjustment, seat memory, and massage functions along with heated and ventilated functionality. The seats are very well padded along with good bolstering and are very comfortable. Also available with the 2020 S7 is an optional dual-pane acoustic glass that mitigates cabin noise.

The rear bench too has a decent recline angle and offers all-day comfort. The 2020 S7 benefitting from its longer wheelbase does allow generous legroom and shoulder room at both the benches. However, the sloping roofline might leave taller occupants at the rear wishing for more headroom. Well, that doesn't seem much of a complaint, since the case is very similar to most of the 4 door coupes in the market. Above all, you don't buy an exotic and outrageous Sportback like the S7 with comfort and space as the first priority.

What to expect on the Infotainment front?

It's an Audi after all and just like its other siblings, the 2020 S7 gets Audi’s latest suite of infotainment system that comes bundled with a multitude of features. Replacing the orthodox dials and buttons, the infotainment system now features a standard pair of screens sitting in the middle of the dashboard. The upper 10.1-inch screen controls most of the functions like media, radio, telephone as well as the pre-loaded MMI navigation that comes with MMI touch response. The lower 8.6-inch screen takes guard of the standard four-zone climate control along with the seat adjustments.

Part of the standard equipment also includes a 12.3 inch fully digital virtual cockpit that assists the driver with a host of information right behind the steering wheel. Audiophiles' needs are taken care of by the 16- speaker standard Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System. The higher Prestige trim allows up-gradation to an even crankier 19- speaker audio system.

How much Cargo can you carry?

In terms of cargo space, the 2020 Audi S7 completely outshines its rivals. Audi has very thoughtfully housed the S7’s proportions taking advantage of its long wheelbase and adding a Sportback profile. The sheer brilliance makes the 2020 S7 confident enough to offer a 24.9 cu-ft of space behind its rear bench. Adding further blow to its rivals, the S7’s rear seats also fold down to open up further space.

Among its rivals, the Panamera stands closest to the S7 with a similarly precise sportback profile and is also longer than the Audi. However, the Porsche’s longer hood eats up a fair chunk of its length, leaving a minimal space at the rear. The other two contestants, the CLS 53 and the Ghibli do sports curves somewhat similar to the S7, but their sedan like conventional attire restricts their cargo area.

What features to expect on the inside?

2020 Audi S7 Exterior

As far as exterior appearance is concerned, the 2020 Audi S7 dons the same enticing apparel as the A7. However, to highlight its enraged intent it does get some aggressive S sport embroidery all around. The chassis is a bit lowered that the regular A7 and at the front there is an S model-specific bumper with aluminum inserts and larger air intakes.

However, the most prominent change at the front is the revised new double-slat grille. Part of the sport package also includes a front splitter, aluminum-optic side mirror housing, and 20-inch five-twin spoke wheels. The rear end is dominated by a new rear diffuser inlay in black chrome matte and quad exhaust tips. There is also an optional optic package available that unlocks a black exterior kit and unique 21 inch 5-V spoke wheels in Anthracite.

The Audi A7 has always been the better looker in its segment and the 2020 S7 is no different. There are other cars in the same class that also flaunt a similarly dramatic profile, but no other brand does the four-door coupe better than Audi. What sets the S7 apart from its rivals is Audi’s perfect composition of elegance and sportiness. The way those sleek and edgy body lines sweep across its long curvy body makes it look stylish and very premium at first glance. At the very same time, the sport-specific exterior tweaks add just the right amount of muscle in its persona.

What are the most notable highlights on the outside?

  • 20" 5-twin-spoke design wheels
  • Singleframe grille with platinum double slats
  • S-model specific front/rear fasciae and side sills

2020 Audi S7 Safety

Along with performance the S7 has always been very concerned about occupant safety, and the new 2020 S7 gets even more serious with the concern. The 2019 A7 upon which it is based, received good scores from the IIHS. With the incorporation of most of the advanced safety features available in the segment, to tame down its wilderness, the 2020 S7 certainly stands ahead than the A7 on safety parameters. Some of its notable safety features include -

Safety Features

  • Advanced Airbag Protection System with 6 airbags
  • Power central locking system with safety unlock feature if airbags deploy
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with secondary collision brake assist and traction control (ASR)
  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD) and brake assist
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • Electromechanical parking brake
  • Rear view camera

2020 Audi S7 Competition

Audi S7 vs. Mercedes-AMG CLS 53

The Mercedes- AMG CLS 53 is a very strong contender in its segment. It looks stylish, has a punchier engine and an effortless transmission along with plush interiors. However, when compared to the S7, the Merc has a more cramped interior room and it also scores less on practicality. Another area where the S7 edges past the CLS 53 is its dynamic handling. The CLS 53 feels loosely held around corners and is also not quite maneuverable as the s7 as well. Above all, the Merc’s steering lacks proper communication whereas its brakes show early signs of fading. Overall, the CLS 53 might offer ride quality and comfort on-par with the S7, but the sleeker Audi is a much better sport package than the Merc.

2020 Mercedes AMG CLS 53

Audi S7 vs. Porsche Panamera 4S

The Panamera is the closest rival to the S7, in terms of form and shape. The Porsche wears an iconic design and has almost the same engine but on a lighter body allowing for better performance. Apart from the engine, not only is the Porsche very premium on the inside but also offers a supple ride quality. Where the Audi races ahead of the Porsche is its fresh and sharper design compared to the conservative Panamera. The Audi is also vetter tuned for overall dynamic performance with better brakes and advanced electronics.

2020 Porsche Panamera 4s

Audi S7 vs. Maserati Ghibli

An elegant Italian design, a similarly powered engine, and relatively closer pricing brings the Maserati Ghibli at the same table as the 2020 Audi S7. However, when closely compared to the S7, the Italian falls behind by a large margin. The Ghibli not only misses out on the premium interior vibe of the S7, but its powertrain is also not as robust as the Audi. To sum up, the 2020 Audi S7 offers better performance, better handling, upscale interiors along with a more mature sense of practicality than the Ghibli.

2019 Maserati Ghibli

2020 Audi S7 Final Verdict

Got a big wallet and out in the market for a comfortable luxury car that is extremely stylish as well as aptly powered enough to tame tracks, but you want to avoid the fuel-guzzling V8 monsters? Well, there are only a handful of cars that pass the eligibility test to your garage, but the 2020 Audi S7 is the one that passes the test with distinction.
