When Audi launched the new A7 in 2018 it received a more than overwhelming response from the masses. Not only was the popular favorite luxury fastback sedan more seductive than its previous generation but also sported a more upscale fit and finish along with better tech hardware. The only thing it left Audi Sport fans was for a better and more powerful engine and that's exactly what the new S7 is.

The 2020 S7 debunks its earlier V8 and now uses a 2.9 liter turbo V6 that is also shared with the RS5 and the new S6. The engine makes 6 fewer horses than the previous V8 but outstrips it with 37 ft-lbs of more torque. Not only is the new S7 more brutal at its core but is also outspoken with its distinctively sporty visual cues. A lowered suspension, splitter up front, diffuser at the rear, double- slat single frame grille along with added vents and scoops is enough packaging to differentiate the sportier S7 from its regular sibling. 

Overall, the 2020 Audi S7 is a very well laid out sporting machine that incorporates all the DNA of Audi Sport, be it on the mechanical or the physical front. It can move you from your home to office and vice versa with sheer opulence and can also tame down some winding tracks on weekends. However it is not the only product in the market with such sonorous composition. With prices ringing from $83,900, the 2020 S7 shares the turf with some other Europeans like the Mercedes- AMG CLS 53, Porsche Panamera 4S and the Maserati Ghibli.

The only set back we had with the RS5 was the very small turbo lag during kick-offs, but that shouldn't be the case with its updated elder sibling. The 2020 Audi S7’s engine is escorted by a 48V electric compressor that amplifies low-end torque. The standard 8- speed tiptronic automatic transmission has been reworked to optimize the engine’s low-end torque and it communicates to the wheels through the revolutionary Quattro all-wheel drive system.The transmission pairs up with the electric compressor simultaneously to reduce turbo lag and increase throttle response.

 Acceleration

Outright acceleration across a straight line from the start is a task very ideal to the 2020 Audi S7. Audi claims a 0-60 miles show of 4.5 seconds which is not the best among its class but is fairly considerable for a vehicle with such a mass.The new 2020 S7 is 0.3 seconds quicker than its predecessor and 0.7 seconds quicker than the regular A7. However the 2020 S6 which gets the same engine but with a lighter body, does the 60 mile sprint in 0.1 second less than the S7.

Among the competition, the Porsche Panamera 4S which shares several of its mechanical underpinnings with the S7, turns out to be the swiftest among the lot. Amore balanced body proportions allowing better stability, enhanced aerodynamics and a lighter body allows the 4S to clock from 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds.

Ride and Handling

On the ride and handling front the 2020 Audi S7 seems much promising as well. The standard S- tuned adaptive dampers are very well buttoned and allow seamless switching between different drive. Part of the standard package is also the Quattro all-wheel drive system that comes paired with active torque distribution ensures optimum traction around corners. Also available as an option is the S sport package which features a limited sport differential that further enhances its handling and agility.

 The 2020 S7’s 15.7 inches ventilated discs at the front and 13.8 at the rear are similar in size to the outgoing model but they now get updated electronics for enhanced braking. The fuel output is on par with the class average and is also slightly better than the previous S7’s 21 mpg combined. Among its rivals, the MercedeS-AMG CLS 53 is the most promising on the fuel consumption charts. Even with a body that the heaviest among the lot, the Merc delivers a marginally better 23 mpg combined. Thanks to its seamless 9-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

The seats are very well padded along with good bolstering and are very comfortable. Also available with the 2020 S7 is an optional dual-pane acoustic glass that mitigates cabin noise..

The rear bench too has a decent recline angle and offers all-day comfort. The 2020 S7 benefitting from its longer wheelbase does allow generous legroom and shoulder room at both the benches. However, the sloping roofline might leave taller occupants at the rear wishing for more headroom. Well, that doesn't seem much of a complaint, since the case is very similar with most of the 4 door coupes in the market. Above all, you don't buy an exotic and outrageous sportback like the S7 with comfort and space as the first priority.

Infotainment

Its an Audi after all and just like its other siblings, the 2020 S7 gets Audi’s latest suite of infotainment system that comes bundled with a multitude of features. Replacing the orthodox dials and buttons, the infotainment system now features a standard pair of screens sitting in the middle of the dashboard. The upper 10.1 inch screen controls most of the functions like media, radio, telephone as well as the pre-loaded MMI navigation that comes with MMI touch response. The lower 8.6 inch screen takes guard of the standard four-zone climate control along with the seat adjustments.

Part of the standard equipment also includes a 12.3 inch fully digital virtual cockpit that assists the driver with a host of information right behind the steering wheel. Audiophiles needs is taken care of by the 16- speaker standard Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System. The higher Prestige trim allows upgradation to an even crankier 19- speaker audio system.

In terms of cargo space the 2020 Audi S7 completely outshines its rivals. Audi has very thoughtfully housed the S7’s proportions taking advantage of its long wheelbase and adding a sportback profile. The sheer brilliance makes the 2020 S7 confident enough to offer a 24.9 cu-ft of space behind its rear bench. Among its rivals, the Panamera stands closest to the S7 with a similarly precise sportback profile and is also longer than the Audi. However, the Porsche’s longer hood eats up a fair chunk of its length, leaving a minimal space at the rear. As far as exterior appearance is concerned, the 2020 Audi S7 dons the same enticing apparel as the A7. However, to highlight its enraged intent it does get some aggressive S sport embroidery all around. The chassis is a bit lowered that the regular A7 and at the front there is an S model specific bumper with aluminium inserts and larger air intakes.

However, the most prominent change at the front is the revised new double-slat grille. Part of the sport package also includes a front splitter, aluminium-optic side mirror housing and 20 inch five-twin spoke wheels. The rear end is dominated by a new rear diffuser inlay in black chrome matte and quad exhaust tips. The CLS 53 feels loosely held around corners and is also not quite maneuverable as the s7 as well. Above all, the Merc’s steering lacks proper communication whereas its brakes shows early signs of fading. Overall, the CLS 53 might offer ride quality and comfort on-par with the S7, but the sleeker Audi is a much better sport package than the Merc.

The Panamera is the closest rival to the S7, in terms of form and shape. The Porsche wears an iconic design and has almost the same engine but on a lighter body allowing for better performance. Apart from the engine, not only is the Porsche very premium on the inside but also offers a supple ride quality. Where the Audi races ahead of the Porsche is its fresh and sharper design compared to the conservative Panamera. The Audi is also vetter tuned for overall dynamic performance with better brakes and advanced electronics.

An elegant Italian design, a similarly powered engine and a relatively closer pricing brings the Maserati Ghibli at the same table as the 2020 Audi S7. However, when closely compared to the S7, the Italian falls behind by a large margin. The Ghibli not only misses out on the premium interior vibe of the S7, but its powertrain is also not as robust as the Audi. To sum up, the 2020 Audi S7 offers better performance, better handling, upscale interiors along with a more mature sense of practicality than the Ghibli.
