2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

It is not the first time Audi has come up with hybrids, but it surely is the first in terms of a cleaner and a more practical offering. The 2020 plug-in hybrid version is based on the familiar second-generation Q5, which is known for its perfect mix of performance, luxury, and versatility. To look at, to drive and to live with the hybrid is in many ways standard Q5, which is to say a roomy, comfortable, well equipped and quick five-seater.

The Q5 crossover has been the Omega for Audi, recording the highest sales than any of its other models in the US. Definitely, Audi must have expected the trend to flow with the upcoming Q5 TFSI 55 e plug-in hybrid, which will be the best-selling vehicle with a charge port and a fuel cap. It seems the plug-in hybrid versions of its niche cars reflect upon a smooth transition to all-electric powertrains. Worldwide, Audi plans to launch 20 electrified models by 2025, including 20 fully electric models. Starting in 2020, the US market will get a plug-in hybrid version of the Q5 crossover, A7 and the flagship A8 sedan.

Overall Rating

The 2020 Audi Q5 Identifying the plug-ins from their non-electrified counterparts requires some serious car-spotting skills. However, it’s the inside that counts. Under the hood of Q5 plug-in hybrid, Audi’s familiar 2.0-liter turbo-4 is paired with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with permanent-magnet motor sandwiched between it. The 141-hp motor contributes to the total engine output, taking it beyond the SQ5 performance levels. The Q5 PHEV suffices the mission of going green without compromising the driving dynamics wrapped around luxury, the trademark of the German automaker.

The Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid is not a vigorous or race-spec compact SUV, but in case you wish, it can shock you and others. With the solid build quality and exotic luxury, the cabin is rich in technology and comfort features. The cargo capacity will be a trade-off but rest assured, Q5 checks all the boxes to keep you worry-free on the road. Charging the Q5 hybrid takes less than 2.5 hrs using the included 7.7-kWh on-board charger on a level 2 charge point. Also, Audi Q5 TFSI e has a range of 20 miles in electric-only mode. Which raises many questions. Does it deliver on the supposed environmental benefits? Is it better to drive than regular Q5s and other hybrids? How easy is it to live with?

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Features

8.5/10

The first glimpse of the 2020 Audi Q5 PHEV’s starting price tag of $52,900 may raise some eyebrows but Audi justifies every bit of it. The Q5 is a perfect blend of performance and luxury, with ample comfort, space, and technology features to make your life easy. More than anything, the hybrid powertrain makes the Q5 beat SQ5 in terms of performance. Compared to the standard Q5, the hybrid counterpart is about $10,000 ahead and is yet to qualify for the federal tax incentives. Having said this, Q5 hybrid is available in three trim levels as the standard lineup. The Q5 Premium being the cheapest while the top of the pile, the Prestige is priced at $60,350. In due course, we believe that federal tax rebates will be revealed, till then it is prescribed to hold on the buying spree a bit longer.

What do we recommend?

For the best value for money, the mid-range Premium Plus presents the best package. For the price, the Premium Plus model gets LED headlights, front and rear park sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, a panoramic sunroof, upgraded leather interior, driver seat memory, and Audi phone box technology with a wireless charging pad that the base model doesn't get. Also, the available list of features with the mid-spec trim makes it easier to spec it comprehensively without burning a hole in the pocket.

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Worldwide automakers trying their first stint in the hybrid technology, have all complimented a naturally-aspirated engine with the electric motor setup to match the conventional output. However, there are some automakers who tend to defy the trend and set a new one, surely Audi is one of those. The gas-powered Q5 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which the hybrid counterpart carries forward to combine it with an electric motor. The 2020 Q5 hybrid boasts 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque directed via a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The Q5 hybrid Quattro is supported by Ultra Technology which is forward biased and disconnects the drive to the rear wheels until necessary, making the drive even cleaner by saving the fuel.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Engine Bay

The 2.0-liter turbo-four is a peppy engine, and most of us have seen how it makes the standard Q5 a quick luxurious compact SUV. The output from the engine is smooth and never feels underpowered, even on the highway speeds. However, the thrill-seekers turn their attention to a more powerful and high-performance SQ5. Audi seems to bring a change as the addition of electric motors to the conventional setup takes the performance-output beyond the SQ5. much more powerful and quick off-the-line, the new Q5 hybrid is much more appealing, flaunting high-performance spec with better fuel economy.

Among all the hybrid luxurious compact crossovers flooding the market, 2020 Audi Q5 leads the pack in terms of power. The 2020 Q5 hybrid is a plush crossover that is distinguishable from the rest. The S-line attire makes it look the way it feels, powerful. Having said this, Q5’s better performance figures do not translate evenly to the intention of being a sustainable and cleaner alternative. On the other hand, the Lexus NX 300h may not be quick comparatively but is much more cleaner.

Acceleration

The 2020 Audi Q5 Hybrid is quick to take off, surging power through the turbo-four combined with the electric motors. The Q5 is a little bit quicker than the V-6 powered SQ5, charging to 60 mph in flat five seconds. The 0-60 mph time of Q5 PHEV is almost a second quicker than the non-hybrid Q5. On the start, powertrain runs on electric mode only unless you flatten the throttle. The Q5 hybrid’s top speed is limited to 130 mph or 85 mph in pure electric mode. The hybrid model makes the non-electrified Q5 feels inferior, almost not-interesting.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid 0-60 MPH In Just 5.0 sec

The standard Quattro all-wheel-drive with Ultra technology enables the Q5 to be quick and safe at the same time. In the slippery road conditions or snowy-weather, the all-wheel setup takes care of the required grip which otherwise disconnects the drive to rear-wheel to save fuel. Also, the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is quick to respond and feels the best combination for the Q5.

Undoubtedly, the excess power makes the Q5 PHEV the quickest off-the-line. The 2020 Audi Q5 manages to beat every other hybrid SUV in its class quite comprehensively even after being the heaviest of the lot. Another German, the X3 xdrive30ie falls short by 0.9 seconds in the chase to 60 mph but in an absolute sense, the X3 is strong and refined as a BMW should be. The GLC hybrid version is next in line but that should not worry you, because it is the innovative luxury for which the Merc GLC 350e is known for. Nonetheless, the purpose of these hybrids is not to win you drag races but take you around in style and vigor.

Ride and handling

The hybrid counterpart shares most of the mechanical underpinnings with the regular Q5, but the increase in power hasn’t been ignored. The 2020 Audi Q5 PHEV’s handling dynamics complement the high-performance engine, with the luxury SUV staying planted and comfortable even while cruising at highway speeds. The city driving is easy, thanks to the nimble steering response. The steering is light and reverts realistic feedback. Around the turns, the Q5 exhibits fair minimum roll or lean and all that power under the hood makes it exit corners with ease. The Q5 is well-damped to absorb even the slightest of road imperfection for a comfortable ride. The luxuriously isolated cabin of the Q5 is quiet, and the silent electric motors make it even more luxurious.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Front View

Audi equips the Q5 PHEV with three hybrid-specific drive modes to adjust the engine and battery usage. As you start up the Q5, default starts in EV mode which uses electric motor only until you flatten the accelerator pedal for additional support or battery is depleted. In the Hybrid Mode, Q5 uses the navigation route guidance to optimize the battery power along the programmed route as per the driving scenarios. In Battery Hold mode, it keeps the battery charge levels on hold to preserve it for future use. Other than the hybrid-specific movies, the Q5 gets standard five driving modes to tune the steering and suspension response as per the need.

Braking

With the increase in the performance figures, the 2020 Audi Q5 PHEV gets more stopping power courtesy of bigger rotors than the regular Q5. this allows the 2020 Q5 hybrid to showcase some exceptional braking power. In everyday driving, most braking is done by the electric motor rather than the brakes. When the driver takes the foot off the accelerator, the engine may be deactivated and coast using the battery.

The regenerative braking system is fairly intuitive and unlike the ‘one-pedal setting’, Q5 uses sensors to increase the brake force autonomously in order to keep a safe distance from the car in front and maximize efficiency.

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

8.5/10

The 2020 Audi Q5 PHEV will be a joy to live with, thanks to the 20-miles of official range on electric mode. The Q5 hybrid matched the range with the upcoming BMW X3 hybrid model. Also, Q5 is good at harvesting energy from the regenerative braking system and switching into electric mode at slow speeds. Official MPGe of 65 mpg combined may vary depending on the driving styles and conditions. Driving around the town, Q5 could even go upto 25 miles on a single charge. It may be noted that riding atop bigger wheels or driving in cold weather conditions eats up battery range faster in any electric vehicle.

Audi’s standard 14.1 kWh battery charge up in around 2.5 hours from a 7 KW cable and a standard three-pin domestic socket will do the same in about six hours. Q5 hybrid boast a fuel tank capacity of 15.3-gallons which can manage around 410 miles of range in mixed conditions.

8.0/10

When it comes to interior styling and features, Audis mean serious business. Be it quality of materials used or the ample of upscale features, there are hardly any other competitors that pose a threat to it. The 2020 Q5 hybrid offers ample room for four passengers to be seated comfortably. If the rear third passenger is fine with the sacrifice, the Q5 ideally can haul five.

Even for the 6-foot tall passengers, there is a room all-around along with easy ingress and egress. The cabin is well insulated and remains isolated for a quiet and serene ride. Concerned of the quality, don’t forget the Audi Q5 is a luxury SUV that remains true to its classification. The 2020 Q5 hybrid gets standard leather upholstery while the front occupants are privileged to enjoy the extra comfort courtesy of heated eight-way power-adjustable seats. The rear bench offers to recline and boast a 40/20/40 split.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Front Seats

The German footprint is quite clearly exemplified by the well-laid-out interiors. The solid built and subtle design is both user-friendly and inviting. Climbing the trim ladder - Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige expand the standard list of luxury features. All-in-all for the price the Audi Q5 stands tall with no sort of trouble in this department.

Infotainment

Audi’s infotainment systems ability and consistency have garnered popular support in support of it and has almost negated all the questions pointed at it. Following the trend, the 2020 Q5 hybrid is equipped with standard MMI Navigation plus along with the Audi virtual cockpit. Unlike the standard Q5 which gets a 7” display screen, the hybrid version is bestowed with an 8.3” das-mounted screen. The graphics are brilliant, worth more than a thousand words.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Infotainment Screen

Also, the menu settings are easy to understand and highly intuitive. The smartphone interfaces come integrated to support Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The controlling options include physical buttons, voice recognition system and Audi’s touchpad control system. To support your audio needs the base Q5 hybrid is fitted with a 10 speaker audio system while the top-spec Q5 gets a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system as standard.

Cargo volume

As many would presume the cargo space taking a hit in the Q5 hybrid owing to the battery being stuffed under the trunk floor, Audi Q5 PHEV sacrifice nothing as compared to the conventional counterpart. The 2020 Q5 hybrid gets a space of 25.1 cu-ft behind the rear seats, not something exceptional for the luxury class and can fit in only 18 carry-on bags for you. The cargo is flexible with the rear seats folded flat in a 40/20/40 fashion, expanding the hauling space to 53.1 cu-ft. For more convenience, Audi equips the Q5 with a power liftgate as standard.

Further, the cargo layout is user-friendly and accommodative to not waste any available space. Inside, the German sense is highlighted by the presence of comprehensive small storage spaces spread across the cabin. The door pockets are wide enough to hold medium water bottles, while cupholders for four occupants are available. The glovebox, a sizable storage bin under the center armrest, seatback map pockets and a storage cubby for rear-passenger provides relief to all the passengers.

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Exterior

8.0/10

From a distant view, the hybrid and the gas variant of the Q5 looks identical. It is only when you see the badging, you will realize the difference. All upcoming plug-in hybrid models will carry the “TFSI e” badge. Being the cleaner and cleverer counterpart, the plug-in-hybrid Q5 gets the special S-line treatment. S line exterior elements, S line badging, a black optic grille surround and 19” five-spoke V-design alloy wheels are standard. The automaker claims that the Audi Q5 TFSI e expand the design language of the Q models to flaunt sporty and efficiency-oriented equipment. But there is hardly any hybrid-specific embellishment on the Q5 PHEV. The Q5 hybrid borrows two exterior colors - Turbo Blue and Daytona Gray color from the SQ5. Surprisingly, the 2020 Q5 hybrid’s charging port finds a place in the rear quarter panel, unlike the A3 E-Tron in which it is hidden behind the four-ring emblem.

2020 Audi Q5 Plug-in-hybrid Three Quarter View

The Audi Q5 hybrid differs in size from the regular non-hybrid version. Riding on a similar wheelbase of 111-inch, the Q5 hybrid matches the height and width with the regular ones. However, the Q5 hybrid differs in length, which sees a 0.8” growth, measuring 184.4-inches. The addition of the battery and other mechanical components, the Q5 hybrid’s curb weight encounters an increase of 640 lbs, weighing at 4.685 lbs.

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Safety

8.0/10

Audi’s superior build quality has always been one of the strong points that have allowed the automaker to sail across the test of time. Neither do we doubt the technological prowess of the automaker, that is known around the world for its future-proof and reliable technological equipment. The federal safety rating agencies haven’t rated the hybrid Q5 specifically. Since the Q5 PHEV shares similar underpinnings and features, as the standard gas-powered Q5, we present you with its crash test ratings for reference. The NHTSA rated the 2020 Q5 with five out of five stars while the IIHS crash-test yielded a score of “Good” in almost all tests with the collision avoidance system getting “Superior” remarks.

The standard equipment is now-dated and features a rear-view camera, rain-sensing wipers, collision warning and mitigation, and high-beam assist other than the airbag system. Moving to the Premium Plus will add park assist and rear cross-traffic alert, and the top-spec Prestige is privileged with the surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist.

Key safety features

  • Advanced Airbag Protection System with 6 airbags
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) in rear seats
  • Rearview camera
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Offroad mode
  • Collision brake assist
  • Traction control (ASR) and crossbars

Two Germans are yet again head-to-head with one of their most anticipated compact crossovers. Both, the X3 and the Q5 use a similar spec, 2.0-l turbo-four engine, supported via electric motors. Q5 enjoys a fiar lead over the BMW counterpart in terms of power but that does not mean the X3 is any less. BMW’s strong and refined powertrain may not be as quick but it is fun to drive. BMW undercuts the Audi Q5 by quite some margin but gets expensive for the top trim. Even the add-ons are costlier and lack of standard features in X3 plug-in hybrid adds to the cost. Drivability is excellent in both but the 2020 Audi Q5 is luxurious of all in the class.

2020 Audi Q5 PHEV Vs Lexus NX 300h

To begin with, Audi Q5 hybrid is way ahead performance-wise from the Lexus NX. space-wise, Audi gets a similar amount of space and Audi’s are a far nicer place to house. Other than the compelling price points, Lexus NX offers a better MPGe figure to make it easier for you to run. However, considering the infotainment system, technology and performance on offer, Audi’s pricing feels justified. Lexus NX needs to come up with better utility and versatility to beat the German counterpart.

2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The Q5 Hybrid is under speculation for its limited driver’s engagement but that does not take away the flamboyance of it. Other than limited cargo capacity compared to the rivals, Q5 PHEV will surely turn the tables around in favor of the automaker. Exceptional performance figures enable the Q5 to be the table topper and the unquestionable luxury footprint of the automaker makes it a formidable affair. At first, the daunting price tag asked a few questions, which the Q5 has managed to answer all at once. To drive, to look at and to live with, 2020 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid is a perfect example that is here to flourish.

The best one ever

Overview Rating

The efficiency of our new Audi is not up to the mark of regular hybrids but still impressive. Audi has done a wonderful job by not only focussing on the gas efficiency but the power aspect of the suv as well. Now these batteries installed helps with good fuel efficiency and added power as well. The refined power it makes is the best in class. So, in other words, the engine is able to deliver more power with more miles for a gallon. Who would have thought it was possible.

If Q5's reliability and driveability wasn't enough, plug in hybrid on same platform which checks just the right boxes covering the shortcomings of the conventional Q5. Not just the mileage where it excels, this hybrid nature gives it a little more subtle drive quality.
