The Audi Q3 is set to receive some welcome changes for the 2022 model year which might include minor updates to the exterior design. This luxury crossover entered into its second generation in 2019 and the 2021 model year added a few new features as standard. That being said, as of now, the 2022 Audi Q3 is expected to be more or less a carryover model with minor cosmetic changes.

It is set to receive some design overhaul, along with a more spacious cabin, but nothing has been made official as of now. There’s no confirmed release date of the 2022 Audi Q3, but you could expect it to hit the showrooms in the summer of 2021, based on the car’s history.

The 2022 Audi Q3 is expected to start with a price tag of about $35,000 for the base trim. The price tag could go all the way up to $40,000; while the PHEV model could cost around $10,000 more. In terms of the powertrain, the newer model will offer the same 221 Hp motor for the base trim and a 228 Hp motor for the Q3 45.

Both models will get the same eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel-drive system which does its duty in the current model. Once launched the 2022 Audi Q3 will go after the BMW X1Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, and the Volvo XC40. But will it be any better? Let’s find out.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Audi Q3 is a very popular subcompact luxury crossover SUV from the popular German automaker. The car started production in the year 2011, but the production-ready car came to the market from the 2015 model year. As with most cars, each new model year brings along a slight price hike. Although nothing has been made official yet, the 2022 Audi Q3 is speculated to get some minor design overhaul to make it look more relevant, along with a more spacious cabin as well.

That being said, the 2022 Audi Q3 might bring some new trim levels due to the fact that Audi has had plans to bring hybrid variants of the Q3 to the North American market. Although it is expected to be filled to the brim with numerous luxury features and amenities for its price range, there should be a number of optional add-on features available as well.

2022 Audi Q3 Pricing and Features

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 Audi Q3 will more or less be a carryover update with minor cosmetic changes. The fact that the 2nd generation upgrades made some huge changes to the overall design of the car, which still looks fresh, the 2022 Q3 is expected to be more or less a carryover model. Thus, it will be offered with the same trims; Premium and Premium Plus.

With the current model’s price range of $34,000 to $39,300 depending on the trim level and spec, the new Audi Q3 should start at $35,000, while the PHEV model could cost around $10,000 more. Its main rivals are BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, Volvo XC40, and other similar luxury compact crossover SUVs in the market. For that price, you will get features such as LED headlamps, wireless charging pad, passive entry with push-button start, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

2022 Audi Q3 Buying Advice

Although it's now the most expensive model, the Premium Plus trim still represents the best buy in the Q3 lineup. With this trim, you get Audi’s virtual cockpit, which does make a lot of difference when it comes to convenience. While the base trim comes equipped with an 8.8” touchscreen infotainment display as standard, the bigger 10.1” infotainment display available as an option with the “Technology Package”. The upcoming Q3 is expected to come with the bigger 10.1” infotainment display as standard across the trim levels, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

2022 Audi Q3 Engine and Performance

This is where the new Audi Q3 should bring some significant changes to the table. On top of the standard 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder 45 TFSI engine with 228 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is powering the current Q3 in the market, the 2022 Q3 is expected to be also available with a hybrid powertrain as well. However, the electrified option is allegedly available only with the 40 TFSI e model, also known as the Sportback. This version combines a 1.4 liter turbocharged inline-4 with an integrated electric motor.

According to Audi, this system develops 201 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Q3 Sportback also featured a 13 kWh battery, which resulted in a 30 miles range of pure electric-only drives, which might be pretty convenient at times. That being said, both the engines should be paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro AWD as standard. Audi claims that the standard 2.0L non-hybrid unit can accelerate to 60 MPH in just seven seconds running on premium fuel.

Although the Audi Q3’s power figure from the engine is one of the better ones in the competition, and along with the fact that it has standard Quattro all-wheel-drive across the trim levels, it is still one of the slower accelerating cars in the segment, and that too by quite a margin as well. This does have the potential to be a deal-breaker for the enthusiastic car owners who want a dynamic car with good performance potential.

2022 Audi Q3 Fuel Economy

The 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 45 TFSI engine under the hood of the 2022 Audi Q3 should be able to deliver 20 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, giving a combined fuel economy of 23 MPG, which is actually not that great, especially for its segment. That being said, the PHEV variant with the smaller less powerful engine should be significantly more fuel-efficient. The PHEV variants should be the go-to choice for the eco-conscious.

Since the standard engine in the 2022 Q3 is basically the same 45 TFSI engine that is powering the current Q3 model as well, the standard non-hybrid variants of the 2022 Q3 are not expected to be very fuel-efficient. In fact, it might probably be the least efficient SUV in the segment. But the fact there is a possibility of a new hybrid powertrain to be launched in the upcoming Q3, might be good news for the fans of the Audi Q3 due to the fact that the new hybrid powertrain is expected to be significantly more efficient than the regular non-hybrid one.

2022 Audi Q3 Interior

The interior of an Audi is always a really nice place to be in, and the Q3 SUV is no exception. That being said, the 2nd generation upgrade brought along some huge changes with regards to the interior aspect of the car. It has become more modern, classy, futuristic, and overall a really nice place to be in. The new interior is a bit driver-centric with the whole center stack angles a bit towards the driver. The current model gets an 8.8” touchscreen infotainment display in the center stack, with the option to upgrade to a bigger 10.1” display with the Technology package. The 2022 Q3 is expected to come with the bigger display as standard across the trim level. But since nothing has been made official as of yet, take that with a pinch of salt. One big change for the 2021 Audi Q3 was that a handful of features were made standard across the trim levels.

This should be carried forward to the 2022 model as well, maybe with a few minor changes and updates here and there. That being said, you could expect the interior of the 2022 Q3 to grow in size a bit, with more headroom and legroom, and combine that with the plush interior, the new Q3 will give a tough competition to the other cars in the segment. But some speculate the main updates are in the inside of the car. Although the interior of the Audi Q3 is already far luxurious and feature-rich for its segment and price range, Audi is allegedly trying to make it even better for the 2022 model year. It is expected to have better cabin space with more legroom and headroom than the ongoing model.

*2021 model year data used for reference

Although the 2021 Audi Q3 is in a similar ballpark with its competitors with regards to interior dimensions, it is not the best in the segment. In fact, it might be one of the more underwhelming ones in the competition with regards to interior spaciousness, especially in terms of legroom. That being said, if the interior of the upcoming Audi Q3 grows in size, it will be a bit more relevant with its competitors.

Some of the highlight features that are expected to be carried forward to the 2022 model year include:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power liftgate
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Wireless charging pad with signal booster
  • Keyless entry
  • Universal garage door opener

2022 Audi Q3 Exterior

Although being more or less a carryover model, the 2022 Audi Q3 might take some design cues from the formidable Audi A4 sedan, with more sharply angled LED headlights, but to continue with the single-piece octagonal grille. The rear might have a more defined integrated rear spoiler, and sharper LED tail lights. Moreover, the S-line model might look slightly more aggressive, due to a broader lower opening housing of the fog lights, and a gray trim placed under the grille. But since nothing has been made official as of yet, take it with a pinch of salt.

*2021 model year data used for reference

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Audi Q3 is more or less in the same ballpark as its competitors, but it is arguably one of the heaviest, if not the heaviest car in the segment. That being said, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class dominates the competition when it comes to the wheelbase of a car in this segment.

2022 Audi Q3 Safety

The safety of a car is a very important aspect for any car in the market, and the Audi Q3 manages to be on the safer side as well. The current model is loaded with a number of advanced safety features and driving aids, especially for the price, and the same trait is expected to be carried forward to the 2022 model year of the car as well. Some of the expected standard safety features include:

  • Driver and front-passenger airbags
  • Electronic stability program (ESP) with offroad mode
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • LATCH in rear seats
  • Cruise control system
  • Light/rain sensor

Some of the advanced driving aids should include:

  • Audi pre sense basic
  • Audi pre sense front with pedestrian detection
  • Hill descent control
  • High beam assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert

Moreover, the 2021 Q3 did pretty well in the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests as well. It got an overall 5 out of 5 stars in NHTSA rating with 5 stars in most of the individual tests as well. It scored the highest possible score in most of the individual tests performed by IIHS as well, but it wasn’t crowned with any special honor, which is a bit of a surprise, to be honest. The 2022 Audi Q3 should have the same safety quotient as the model it carries forward.

2022 Audi Q3 Competition

Audi Q3 vs BMW X1

The BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 offer similar features and performance. However, the X1 being a BMW is certainly more engaging to drive. It offers better dynamics and highway manners in comparison to the Audi Q3. The X1 gets BMW’s turbocharged engine along with features such as AWD drivetrain, Steering Wheel Audio Control, Hill Descent Control, and Multi-info display. With a starting price tag of about MSRP of $35,400, the X1 is a bit more expensive than the Audi Q3. The Q3 manages to offer a better and more modern-looking cabin.

Audi Q3 vs Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class offers great interior and exterior styling, a fantastic engine, and an impressive collection of features. Sandwiched perfectly between the GLC and the GLA, the GLB feels luxurious as well as spacious on the inside. With economy better economy estimates, it comes with optional seven seats, pretty comfortable, easy to live with, and will work well for many families. The Audi Q3 on the other hand feels much more of a driver’s car when compared to the GLB-Class.

2022 Audi Q3 Final Verdict

With its relatively affordable price tag, the 2022 Audi Q3 will be quite a sensible choice for someone looking for a handsome, tech-laden luxury crossover. However, with the 2022 model year, there will be no exciting or major updates. It shall still remain a practical and well-designed crossover that offers good performance along with a spacious interior. Thus, if you are looking for a practical and luxurious crossover, we would recommend you to go with the 2021 model as the 2022 model year will not be offering a lot which might be worth waiting for.
