Overall Rating

While the Audi A7 sedan is already quite capable and comfortable, Audi has decided to upgrade its powerhouse and give it a plug-in hybrid version for the 2021 model year with a starting price of $74,900. The new Audi A7 plug-in hybrid vehicle is expected to hit the auto market by the end of the year 2020. But the date can be postponed, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, once launched it shall offer many clever features related to charging along with better fuel economy in comparison to the regular A7 sedan. It will go up against its two main rivals the Mercedes-Benz E350e and the Lexus LS500h which are already doing quite well in the hybrid-car segment.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The car has been rated neither by J.D Power nor by NHTSA as Audi has recently announced its launch and the car is not available or on sale yet. Although, it has been predicted that the car may score four out of five stars by the J.D Power due to the regular A7’s record. The 2020 version of the regular A7 was given a score of 87 out of 100 which is quite a good score for any car. However, the crash-test report by NHTSA is not available yet.

The expected price of the Audi A7 Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle will carry a starting price of $74,900 for the entry-level Premium Plus trim and will set its owners back $80,250 for the top-of-the-range Prestige Trim which is a great value considering the Premium Plus trim of 2021 A7 55 TFSI only costs $550 less. The price may differ from state to state based on the tax rates. Let us check that out.

States

Cost (base cost=$74,900) (expected)

Arizona

$79,094

California

$80,517

Texas

$81,079

New Jersey

$79,862

Ohio

$79,206

The above table shows the different prices of 2021 Audi A7 PHEV in different states according to the different tax rates. Some states levy lesser taxes on hybrid cars compared to most states, however, in which state the car will cost the cheapest can only be confirmed once the 2021 model is officially launched and up for sale.

2021 Audi A7 PHEV gets a sophisticated hybrid drivetrain

As the 2021 Audi A7 PHEV has not been launched yet it is difficult to predict its long-term ownership costs. However, as hybrid models are more sophisticated and require a battery pack alongside a combustion engine, their repair costs are higher in comparison to the regular models. But the better fuel economy that you get with a hybrid setup ensures that your overall ownership costs remain well under acceptable limits. Currently, there is one recall for the 2020 Audi A7 sedan and no customer complaints as reported by the NHTSA website. You can check if your car falls under the recall by putting in your car’s VIN on the website. With the 2021 model, however, we are expecting that Audi would have sorted the niggles out.

In terms of the ownership costs, on an average, you might have to shell out nearly $65,238 in 5 years when you buy a brand new Audi A7 PHEV sedan. This number is quite approximate and not exact as the car is yet to be launched but you can expect similar running costs as the regular sedan.

Warranty

Audi offers good warranty packages on its vehicles but what will be available with the Audi A7 PHEV has not been announced yet. These packages are quite similar to those of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It includes a limited warranty, a powertrain warranty, and complimentary maintenance coverage. Let us check that out. We predict that Audi will be offering the same warranty which is currently available with all its PHEV cars along with the option of extending the warranty at additional cost.

4 years/50,000 miles; whichever comes earlier

Powertrain Warranty

4 years/50,000 miles; whichever comes earlier

Hybrid/Electric Components Warranty

It offers a limited warranty of four years or 50,000 miles; whichever comes earlier, a powertrain warranty of four years or 50,000 miles; whichever comes earlier. Moreover, there is a complimentary maintenance coverage of one year or 10,000 miles; whichever comes earlier. Apart from this, the company offers additional coverage that can be used by paying an extra amount of money. This deal would cover four subsequent services after the first complimentary visit.

Miles Per Dollar

The 2021 Audi A7 PHEV offers a mileage of 21 miles per gallon in cities and 30 miles per gallon on the highways. It is said to offer a mileage of 30 miles per gallon on pure electric drive. It offers a fuel tank of almost 19 gallons. According to that, the car is expected to run almost 12 miles per dollar.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Buying Advice

The 2021 Audi A7 hybrid is a great car with exceptional features and arrangements. We would recommend going for the Premium Plus model. The reason behind this is that the Premium Plus version comes up with many standard features and equipment.

The car offers exceptional features like standard adaptive cruise control, the 12.3-inch digital gauge display, automatic high beam on the sassy LED headlights. Moreover, features like four-zone climate control and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats make the car more preferable.

The Premium Plus version costs almost $74,900. It is also said that the maintenance cost of the car would revolve around almost $1,250 per year. Well, no doubt the Premium Plus version would be best.

Is buying a used Audi A7 a good idea?

The Audi A7 is a series of great standard features and luxury. If you are thinking of getting a luxury car one should consider Audi A7 as an option. The A7 series provides many standard features like a magnificent interior and most comfortable ride topped with great cargo space.

Next to that, the car offers a strong engine and an impressive fuel economy too. Moreover, the infotainment is interesting but can be distracting sometimes. Overall, the A7 series is just another piece of art by Audi worth considering. And the best part is that this piece of luxe can be bought at a very low cost if you get a used Audi A7. Well, worth considering for sure.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

8.3/10

The engine is one of the best parts of the supercars, especially the hybrid ones. The new 2021 Audi A7 Plug-In Hybrid is no different. The 2021 Audi A7 PHEV is said to come up with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine tied up with an electric motor, for a combined output of almost 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It will have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive.

2021 Audi A7 PHEV gets a 2L TFSI engine paired with an electric motor

Not much can be said about the driveability or the tractability of this engine as it a new unit, but we predict that it will be focused on comfort rather than outright performance. The transmission to be used has been seen on quite a lot of other Audi cars and hence this car shall provide smooth and quick shifting. The extra power from the battery pack means that the Audi A7 PHEV will be much better when it comes to starting smoothly off the line due to the extra torque from the electric motor. Overall, it shall remain quite a capable car which will be able to handle city roads as well as highways with quite some ease.

We can see that the Audi comes up with a very powerful engine but seems to be bested by Lexus. Lexus provides a humongous engine and therefore better power and torque. The Mercedes-Benz E350e and the Audi A7 PHEV use similar-sized engines and hence their power and torque output are exactly identical. However, with two extra gears, the Merc will feel more refined on a long stretch of road.

2021 Audi A7 PHEV Acceleration And Braking Performance

The hybrids are always expected to be superior in the section of speed. The Audi A7 Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle is one of the fastest cars you can get in the hybrid-car market. The car is said to take almost 5.2 seconds for reaching the speed from 0-60 miles per hour. This is not the best in its segment but is still quite fast considering it is only 0.8 seconds slower than the much more powerful Lexus LS500h. The battery pack helps the car gain a good start from a standstill which makes it fairly quicker than the regular A7 model.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid accelerates from 0-60 mph just in 5.2 sec.

There has been no official information about the brakes of the 2021 Audi A7 PHEV and hence much cannot be said about it. But we anticipate that the A7 PHEV might get beefier brake discs due to the added weight of the battery.

The Audi, Mercedes, and Lexus stand close to each other in the race and give each other a tough competition. But Lexus seems to be the fastest among all. Also, Lexus offers the highest top speed due to its bigger and more powerful engine. The Mercedes-Benz E350e on the other hand manages to stay ahead of Audi due to its superior gearbox.

2021 Audi A7 PHEV Ride and Handling

The 2021 Audi A7 PHEV shares its suspension setup with the regular A7, which means it handles just as well, the only thing that affects its performance slightly is its higher curb weight due to the addition of the electric motors and the battery pack for the Hybrid drive train. But due to its smaller and substantially lighter 2.0L TFSI engine, this weight disparity is minimal and barely affects the overall handling characteristics of the vehicle.

2021 Audi A7 55 TFSIe gets the brilliant Quattro AWD system

Overall the A7 does a great job at leveling out bumps and thanks to its adaptive dampers, it car tackle corners with utmost gusto at the touch of a button. When compared to its rivals from Mercedes and Lexus, the A7 does outperform them around corners, courtesy of its Quattro AWD system.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

7.3/10

It is said that the 2021 Audi A7 Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle will have a fuel economy of 22 miles per gallon in the cities and 29 miles per gallon on the highways. Combined it provides a fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon. Also, the car provides a fuel tank of 19 gallons. These numbers are easily amongst the best in its segment and if you are looking for the most efficient luxury hybrid sedan then the Audi A7 PHEV should fit right into your list. But the icing on the cake has to be the fact that the A7 PHEV is eligible for tax rebates of up to $6,712 in many states and it also allows its owners to take advantage of HOV lane driving in some states.

While the mileage is pretty impressive, the fuel capacity is a little low with the Audi A7 Hybrid. On the other hand, the more performance-focused Lexus LS500h provides the worst fuel economy between these three cars. The Mercedes-Benz E350e however, strikes the best balance between performance and efficiency.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Interior

8.0/10

The inside of the 2021 Audi A7 Hybrid will not be much different from that of the regular Audi A7. Thus the new A7 PHEV comes up with Audi’s virtual cockpit interior. This five-seater car is comfortable enough for five adults to fit in comfortably with enough room to stretch out at the back. It gets an array of digital displays with the base trim getting the 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with the 10.1-inch display for the top-specced trim. The cabin looks as attractive as the exterior and offers a comfortable and tech-laden experience.

The front seats offer the best comfort and the driver’s seat has been picked up from the S7. It gets 12-way power to adjust along with a heated function. The upper trim gets an 18-way power adjustment along with a cooling and heated function as well. At the rear, you get ample room as well, including headroom, even with the low-slung roof of the Audi A7.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in-hybrid Sedan dashboard

The hybrid is loaded with features that make the car convenient too. Features such as ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a night vision camera system, and many more.

Additionally, features like traffic sign recognition, rear sunshades, massaging front seats, quad-zone climate control, lane-keeping assist, dual-pane acoustic glass, and power soft-closing doors enhance the convenience of the car. The car is indeed a masterpiece of amenity.

Again, there is no huge difference between the dimensions of the Audi and Mercedes. But there is a difference. The interior dimensions of Audi are a little better than that of Mercedes. Hence, Audi’s interior is much more spacious and comfortable.

Along with this, the car provides a cargo space of 24.9 cubic feet. This is pretty big. Furthermore, features like a panoramic sunroof, push-button start/stop, power liftgate, keyless entry, and many more. Moreover, the car is stuffed with a long list of hi-tech features. Let us check that out as well.

How’s the 2021 Audi A7 PHEV’s infotainment system?

As we mentioned earlier, the car is stuffed with loads of hi-tech features giving the car a modern touch. These features include a 10.1-inch colored touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Coming to the audio arrangements, there are 16 and 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen stereos.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in-hybrid Sedan infotainment system

Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • The 10.1-inch colored touchscreen infotainment system
  • 12.3-inch digital gauge display
  • 16 or 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen stereos
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB connectivity (four USB ports)
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Wifi Hotspot
  • HD radio
  • Satellite radio
  • The dual-zone climate control system

Well, we can undoubtedly say that the car’s inside is a whole new realm of luxe and comfort.

How’s the 2021 Audi A7 PHEV’s Cargo Capacity?

The exact cargo capacity figures for the 2021 Audi A7 PHEV aren't clear just yet but we anticipate that since the vehicle does have a substantial battery pack, it will it into the boot space. Judging by the regular Audi A7's 13.4 cubic feet of boot capacity with both its rear seats folded down, this number might be slightly less but the usable boot space should be very similar to the regular car.

2021 Audi A7 55 TFSIe gets a liftback boot lid

But when compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz E350 e, the 2021 A7 PHEV does fall behind mostly due to its sloping roofline. Hence Mercedes's cargo capacity of 35 cubic feet is greater than even the standard A7. But the A7 does score higher in terms of practicality and accessibility thanks to its massive boot opening which comes as an advantage of its Sportback design.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Exterior

9.9/10

The new 2021 Audi A7 Plug-in Hybrid model will wear a handsome look that will be meant to grab a lot of attention when on road. Well, the regular Audi A7’s aggressive and sporty look will pass on to the hybrid model as well which will get the same design and shape. This means that the 2021 A7 Plug-in Hybrid shall look quite racy and sharp on the outside. It shall be a treat to the eyes with its racy rooflines and a sporty fastback stance.

2021 Audi A7 looks elegant and sporty

From the front black, horizontally carved grills along with sleek LED headlights give the car an ultra-sporty look. From the rear, the sloping roofline and sleek LED taillamps renders it a low-slung stance. From the side, the car looks absolutely scintillating and offers a very sharp and imposing appeal. Henceforth, the Audi A7 Hybrid is one of the most astonishing cars in the supercar market.

2021 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid Sedan Safety

9.0/10

The 2021 Audi A7 PHEV hasn't been crash-tested either by NHTSA or by IIHS and also has not been rated by the J.D Power. The car is expected to do exceptionally well in the field of safety and security. This prediction has been given based on the previous performances and the long list of safety features the car provides. The car offers features like seven airbags and an automatic braking system. Moreover, a rear child safety lock and daytime running lights with night vision enabled and automatic high beam setting. A traction control system along with a rollover protection bar and fog lamps and parking aid is installed in the car. There are backup camera systems and an electronic stability control system in the car.
