The Audi A7 has been quite a popular choice for many Americans in the luxury-sedan segment which is full of attractive offers these days. It combines luxury with practicality, as it not only offers an opulent cabin but also a great fuel economy. Hence, it has been a benchmark in striking the right balance between luxury, performance, practicality, and style. Introduced in the year 2010, the A7 sedan was based on Volkswagen’s MLB Platform but is now built over its more advanced and safer MLBevo platform which is known for its lightweight and high strength.

The Audi A7 Sedan recently received a major update along with its bigger sibling, the Audi A8 and had been quite the talk of town for the technology it offers. Hence, the. 2021 model will be a carried over from the 2020 model and shall remain more or less the same car. Currently the A7 Sedan is offered in three trims and the prices kickstart from $69,200 for the Premium trim and go all the way to $79,700 for the top-spec Prestige trim. Today, the sedan faces stiff competition from the likes of segment hot sellers like the Mercedes CLS 450 and the Maserati Ghibli. Here’s our take on the 2021 Audi A7 Sedan that’s soon going to be at the Audi dealership near you.

9.1/10

The 2021 Audi A7 trim levels will comprise of the same three trim options: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The prices of the current Audi A7 start at $69,200 for the base Premium trim which also comes quite loaded and end at $79,700 for the top-of-the-line Prestige trim. However, if you want to experience the ultimate luxury then the car shall set you back at least around $85,000 due to all the extra packages which add more to all the tech and features on offer.

The Premium trim, priced at $69,200 comes standard with host of features like panoramic roof and Quattro all-wheel drive. It is quite a loaded trim however it does not get some feel good and useful features such as the Matrix headlights, heated seats, or the heads up display.

The Premium Plus trim comes next at $73,600 and offers a lot of latest technology like the LED Matrix headlight with illumination animation. You also get features such as Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with 16 speakers, 15-channel amplifier, Top view camera system with Virtual 360 view, and most importantly, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit.

The Prestige trim lies above the Premium Plus trim and comes with feature such as Head-up display, Heated and ventilated front seats HD Matrix-design LED headlights with Audi laser light and high-beam assist, Driver Assistance package and Power soft-closing doors. This trim makes the customer feel the most special with small but flashy and feel-good features.

2021 Audi A7 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Audi is known for adding some of the most advanced and cutting edge technology to its cars and the 2021 Audi A7 , will be no different, just like the 2020 model. Like most other German luxury cars, the Audi A7 is a sophisticated machine which is meant to deliver performance and luxury rather than simplicity and quick repairs. Hence, the car will not be very pocket friendly in case of a breakdown.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

While the Audi A7 is not easy to repair in any way, it fairs well on the reliability front. The 2020 Audi A7 has a good reliability score of four out of five from J.D. Power. However, the sophistication of the technology used make for high repair costs but the good fuel economy provides for some relief in the overall ownership cost. Higher up the trim you go, the more expensive the ownership cost will get as the higher trims use the best cutting edge technology. Hence, overall, the Audi A7 is in no way a cheap car to maintain and we suggest you to opt for Audi’s maintenance packages.

The Audi A7 even though a well-sorted luxury segment sedan, has had a few recalls in past few years. However, the German car-maker is quite prompt in fixing issues and making sure that the customers don’t pay or suffer for the manufacturing defects. Currently the A7 sedan has 10 recalls as per the NHTSA’s website which includes recalling pertaining to basic seats (with or without heating), body-sensing mat within the front passenger, Occupant Detection System, etc.

In terms of the ownership costs, on an average, you will have to shell out nearly $60,000 in 5 years when you buy a brand new Audi A7 sedan taking into account it’s running, repair, insurance and maintenance cost. This is at par with many of its rivals as the cost of financing of about $7,000 is included in the cost. Also, the cost is calculated based on a 5-year estimate with 15,000 miles driven per year.

Warranty

Audi is no segment leader when it comes to providing the best standard warranty on luxury cars. It offers four-years or 50,000-mile standard coverage on most of its cars which covers anything related defects caused by faulty part, poor material or poor workmanship by the factory. You can opt for the optional extended warranty which shall come at a nominal cost. In comparison to its prime rival Mercedes-Benz, the warranty provided by Audi is at par with the segment but nothing exceptional.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Comprehensive warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

4 years/ Unlimited miles

The standard warranty offer for theAudi A7 sedan lacks a traditional powertrain warranty. Hence, you might have to purchase the extended comprehensive warranty in order to get the same benefits as with some of its other rivals. However, the standard coverage does includes all of the most important parts of the car like the engine, transmission, drivetrain, and other important but smaller parts. The warranty also includes road-side assistance that will last for four years with no mileage limitation.

Miles Per Dollar

Audi A7’s annual running cost on average is approximately around 10,000 USD per year. Hence for every dollar, the car runs around 10 miles which is basically the miles per dollar average of the car.

2021 Audi A7 Buying Advice

We will recommend the Premium Plus trim from the Audi A7 Sedan lineup. Apart from Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive, it packs advanced features such as Audi’s virtual cockpit, HD Matrix-Design LED Headlights w/Laser and Ambient LED Interior Lighting. It strikes a sweet balance between price and value. If you want to add more features to the trim from the top of the line trim, you can do it with the various packages that Audi offers.

The 2019 Audi A7 received a score of 84 for quality and reliability in the JD Power report. Score wise, the A7 is at par with the Mercedes CLS 450 which has also got a score of 84.

Is buying a used car Audi A7 a good idea?

The Audi A7 Sedan does not manage to do exceptionally well when it comes to retention of its value, just like most other luxury segment cars. For the first year, the Audi A7 tends to lose between 20% to 25% of its value which comes out to be about $18,000. However, the maintenance cost of the Audi A7 for the first year is about just $800 which offers some relief to the customer.

According to the depreciation value, the 2017 model years are the best ones to look out for. The total maintenance cost of the car comes to arounf $7,000 for five years which is not bad at all considering its segment. However, if you plan to sell your Audi A7 we would suggest you to use the car for at least 5 years with 15,000 miles of run per year to get good value out of your investment.

2021 Audi A7 Engine and Performance

8.3/10

The 2021 Audi A7 will continue to get the 55 TFSI engine which currently does its duty in the current model as well. Hence, the 2021 model will get the same turbocharged V-6 that churns out 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The power is put down through Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive which is offered as standard on all trims. Also standard is the engine which even the top-spec trim gets. All this power is managed with the help of a seven-speed automatic transmission. To reduce the turbo lag and improve the acceleration, the A7 sedan also offers a 48-volt hybrid system which other cars in Audi’s line-up also share.

2021 Audi A7 Sedan Engine Bay

Even though Audi’s A7 offers the least power in its segment, it feels adequate for the everyday drive and also for undertaking long-distance journeys over the highways. The engine feels superfly refined and offers linear performance. Its hybrid system helps the car get off the line smoothly in stop and go condition which adds to the premium feeling inside the cabin. While its mid-range of the rev counter that offers the most relaxed drive, it is the top end which makes this engine put a smile on your face.

However, the Audi A7 is no rubber burner and you would have to opt for the more expensive S7 if you want to indulge into a sporty driving experience. The A7 sedan is tuned more towards comfort and cruising rather than outright performance.

The Mercedes CLS 450 manages to beat the Audi A7 in the numbers game as its output puts it right at the top in this comparison. On the other hand, the Maserati Ghibli takes the second spot but is the most expensive car in its segment. Still it is the Audi A7 that offers $ 206 per horsepower which gives the best value in its segment.

2021 Audi A7 Acceleration And Braking Performance

Audi’s 3.0-liter Turbocharge V6 allows the A7 to sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds which is not bad at all. The 2021 model shall boast the same numbers as there will be no changes done to its transmission or powertrains. The best part about Audi’s engine is the fact that it offer high-performance while being frugal as well. Its 48-volt hybrid system helps it get a quick start off the line. While it might not be the quickest car in this comparison it comes pretty close to beating the top scorer when it comes to the quarter-mile time. All cars offer excellent braking performance but it is the Maserati Ghibli that manages to stand out and offer the best braking prowess. The Mercedes CLS 450 takes the most time and distance to come to a halt from 60 mph.

Mercedes CLS 450's 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds bests the Audi and the Maserati alike. However, while the Maserati is the most expensive car here, it is unfortunately, also the slowest. Hence, Audi deserves a pat on its back for offering better performance at a lesser price. The Audi offers a 7-speed automatic transmission across the range while the Mercedes offer a 9-speed superior gearbox.

2021 Audi A7 Fuel Economy

7.3/10

Where we can give Audi A7’s engine full marks is in terms of frugality. The 2021 model will offer the same gas mileage as the current model due to the same V6 motor being used with the same hybrid setup. This V6 engine manages to perfectly balance performance and fuel economy. The Audi A7’s turbocharged motor gets on of the best-in-class, EPA estimated mileage of 25 MPG in mixed driving conditions. However, with its 19.3 -gallon fuel tank it offers the least amount of range in this comparison. Hence, if you are buying the sedan only for long highway trip then the Mercedes CLS 450 offers a better deal.

Looking at the rivals, it’s just the Mercedes CLS 450 manages to beat even the Audi A7 in terms of fuel efficiency, although just by a margin. On the other hand, the Maserati Ghibli offers the worst fuel economy in this comparison but offers a bigger fuel tank to compensate for the lack of efficiency. The 2021 Audi A7 will offer the same fuel efficiency numbers and any further improvement can only be expected with its next iteration.

2021 Audi A7 Interior

8.0/10

The Audi A7 comes properly loaded when it comes to pampering its passengers inside the cabin. Digital displays are the theme on the inside and the top-specced A7 offers three of them. Even the base trim offers two screens which manage everything about the car. The dashboard looks quite modern and offers a sort of understatement which most German cars do. On the inside it offers features such as dual-zone climate control and high-resolution touchscreens as standard. However, even though the screen is intuitive to use it takes some time to get used to them. Materials used inside are of top-notch quality and Audi has made sure that you get top-class fit and finish.

2021 Audi A7 Sedan Interior View

The A7 offers comfortable front as well as rear seats with the front ones offering heating and cooling functions as well. They provide excellent support all around and finding a comfortable driving position is a cakewalk. At the rear, the legroom is excellent but the headspace is limited due to the sloping roofline. The power-adjustable front seats offer wide range of adjustments with options to customize the seat materials. Soft-touch materials are used all around the cabin and all the physical buttons feel quite premium. Overall, the cabin of the Audi A7 is quite the highlight as it offers quite a luxurious as well as a technologically advanced experience. The 2021 model shall continue to offer the same exact cabin with no further changes on the inside.

The cargo space of 18.9 cubic feet in the Audi A7 is not only commodious but the best in its class. If more space is needed, the folding of the second row of seats shall liberate 49 cubic feet of cargo space. The sedan boasts of advanced boot features such as gesture opening of the tailgate and electric closing. It is also a well-organized trunk and offers a low lift-over height for loading luggage easily.

How’s the 2021 Audi A7 ’s infotainment system?

Audi has come a long way when it comes to offering the best in terms of the infotainment system. Hence, the current A7 sedan offers an advanced and a very intuitive information system which comes with Apple car play and Android Auto compatibility as well. The base trim gets an 8.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen while the upper trims offer a bigger 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster as well. It offers all the information pertaining to navigation and car stats along with music/radio information to the driver right in his/her vision. The haptic feedback helps the user detect if a command has been given to the system without taking the eyes off the road. Audi also offers over the air updates and the 2021 model will continue to get the same infotainment system.

2021 Audi A7 Exterior

9.9/10

The A7 sedan recently got an update in terms of its exterior styling but still it is not difficult to mistake it for its predecessor. The sedan now offers quite an attractive look and offers advanced exterior features such as animated LED headlights and taillamps. The A7 looks very much like a coupe just like its main rival, the Mercedes CLS 450. But it offers a simpler look with its straight and elegant lines and creases. Form the sides, it looks longer compared to the 2019 model due to its increased wheelbase. At the front the big grille and the sharp bonnet shut lines help it gain an imposing look. At the rear the sloping roofline makes it stand out and the spoiler adds to the sporty touch. Overall, the sedan looks quite opulent and upmarket from the outside with the 2021 model getting the same design and styling on the outside.

Compared to its rivals, the Audi A7 Sedan is longer at 195.6 inches than the Maserati Ghibli. However, the Mercedes CLS 450 is the longest car here and offers the best road presence. With curb weights starting at 4332 lbs, the Audi A7 sedan is nearly 80 lbs heavier than its other heaviest counterpart. It also offers the best ground clearance with the air suspension capable of increasing or decreasing its clearance anytime you demand it.

2021 Audi A7 Safety

9.0/10

The 2020 Audi A7 has been among the IIHS top safety pick which explains a lot about how car the car is. The NHTSA has not tested the current A7 but looking at what it offers in terms of safety features and drier assistance features it is safe to assume that it is quite a safe car. The trim tested by the IIHS was the Premium trim which offers automatic emergency braking. The system is quite advanced and can brake the car automatically in case if a pedestrian or a cyclist comes in front of the car. The 360-degree camera is also a boon in urban spaces and there are many other optional sensors that enable the car to self-park or follow a car in front without driver intervention.

2021 Audi A7 Competition

9.6/10

2021 Audi A7 Vs Mercedes CLS 450 4MATIC

The Mercedes CLS 450 4MATIC has quite been the benchmark in its segment. It offers the best performance along with the best in class fuel efficiency as well. Not just that, it is the most spacious sedan here and also gets the best road presence in comparison to its rivals. It feels properly premium on the inside and gets top-notch fit and finish as well. However, the Audi A7 feels more advanced on the inside and comes at a lesser price which makes it more lucrative than the Mercedes.

2021 Mercedes CLS 450 4MATIC Sedan

2021 Audi A7 Vs Maserati Ghibli

Though, the Maserati Ghibli is the most expensive car here, however, it does not offer the best performance or fuel-efficiency. What it offers is the best driving dynamics coupled with the most opulent cabin you can get in its segment. Its lightweight chassis makes it quite nimble and it is simply the most engaging sedan to drive in this comparison. However, it neither offers the best space or the most comfortable ride in its class. Hence, if you are looking for a sedan for comfort and convenience, the Audi A7 is simply the better car.

2021 Maserati Ghibli Sedan

2021 Audi A7 Final Verdict

The Audi A7 offers quite a lot of tech and luxury for the price it comes at. Along with being a comfortable luxurious and gadget orient saloon, it is also quite a practical and a fuel efficient car which combines the best of both worlds. Its smart styling and ultra-advanced touchscreen displays are sure to attract a lot of wealthy tech-savvy buyers. However, it is not a sedan meant for going pedal to the metal style and is rather a subtle comfort-oriented machine. The excellent ride, safety features, and cabin on offer make it the perfect choice for customers looking for a luxurious, elegant and comfortable sedan. As the 2021 Audi A7 will remain more or less the same exact car we suggest you not to wait for its launch and get your bookings done if this car is on your shopping list this year.

Lets pro con the Audi A7

Pros - Acceleration response, road presence, stability

Cons - Ground clearance

Overall Review

10 /10 Overall Rating

The acceleration response is certainely much more than one would expect. The size and dignified built gives a different vibe about performance until I drove it. The pedal response is progressive and has that thump to throw the driver back on the seat pretty hard. All this is garnished with its stability on road where it just feels pinned down to the surface beneath irrespective of the figures on speedo. This is because of the low ground clearance but has its own set of cons as well.

Audi's wonder

Pros - All wheel steering, interiors, seats

Cons - Rear window size, armrest should have been a little higher

Overall Review

10 /10 Overall Rating

Only if the front wheel steer wasn't enough, Audi thought of the brilliant and innovative rear-wheel steer to improve the turning radius and steering feedback a couple more folds. Now I should mention this is my first car with such a feature and I must say the experience could not have been any better. It steers with so much ease in tight spots and those back streets.
