Audi’s identity crisis with its lower-priced sedans has been a bit of a struggle for quite some time and yet the 2021 A5 manages to stand out from its competition. Sitting comfortably between the A4 and A6 sedan, the A5 Sportback marks the entry into Audi’s luxurious sedans and sport backs. The A5 comes in three trims, Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim. Standard features across all trims are more than enough with the added assurance of Audi’s pre sense basic and city, Audi Side Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Park assist. The Premium plus as usual with its mid-price offers the best value. The Prestige takes things a notch higher with its Alcantara leather wraps and a standard 755 watts 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system and Driving Assistance package.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback

The much talked about Audi’s Matrix headlight are standard offerings on the Premium Plus and Prestige trims. The 2021 Audi A5 Sportback will have a base price of $41,800, excluding taxes, registration, etc, will increase. The top-of-the-line Prestige trim with a $53,750 price tag is a pretty hefty price tag and it almost encroaches into ultra-luxury car territory. Yet, the Audi A5 competes with the Kia Stinger, BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-class. The swooping roofline sets the Audi apart, but Kia presents a more powerful design in the form of curves, compared to Audi’s athletic body lines.

The 2021 Audi A5 Sportback marked the return of compact executive coupes. Starting with Coupes and Cabriolet variants, the A5 Sportback is longer and taller than them all. It signifies a more upscale version of the A4, on which it is based. From its frameless doors to that long fastback-like roofline, the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback is definitely one of the better-looking cars in its competition, if not the best. Interior wise, the Audi has delivered class and quality that is synonymous with most German cars. On a scale of one to ten, the 2021 Audi A5 easily scores a well-round 8.

The new Matrix LED headlights, which are standard on the Prestige and Premium Plus trims of the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback, has been the talk of the town, especially with their dance show. But with a starting price tag of $41,800, the 2021 A5 should offer some of the best in class features, and similar to most cars in this segment, maintenance becomes an issue. Does Audi offers some of the best after-sales services in the market, let's find out.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Audi’s popular Quattro system has stood the test of time so provided all A5 trims come with Quattro as standard, it should indicate that this car has at least the most reliable drivetrain. As far as reliability is concerned, the debate still goes on whether luxury and reliability go hand in hand or not. As far as, the A5 Sportback is concerned. Yes, it is luxurious and expensive, but surprisingly after-sales figures are not as bad as they might have rumored to be so. It might not have reliability scores like a Toyota, but with an average score of 83 out of 100 from J.D. Power, the A5 strikes a solid bet as a reliable vehicle.

A critical point that should be noted here is how Audi has limited most of the Driving Assistance controls to the upper trims. Drive assist includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, Active Lane Keep Assist, and Automated Emergency Braking with Forward-Collision Warning. And since the Premium Plus has always struck the best deal with some selected standard features from the Premium trim, the Audi A5 can be held as a pretty safe car too.

Reliability and Ownership cost

Interestingly, the Audi A5 Sportback features in J.D. Power's list of reliable convertibles, where it ranks after the Mercedez-Benz C-class, Audi A4, and Lexus ES. And just like all German cars, Audi scores good points in Dealership and Driving Experience but when it comes down to its resale value and quality, it takes a step back which is not that worrisome.

On average, the true ownership cost for the Audi A5 Sportback comes out to be around $61,371. This is an estimated value over an ownership period of 5 years and 75,000 miles. The maintenance cost over a period of five years is neither like that of an outrageously lavish car nor a- below $20,000 car. The Kelly Blue Book has recorded a 20% depreciation in value and that hits the cost of maintaining the car for over a period of five years.

Recalls are serious headaches and the Audi A5 has not seen any recent recalls as of yet. This has been consistent with the Audi and its lower-priced cars. Second-generation Audi A5 faced some serious issues in 2016 and 2017, wherein both airbags and the engine were at fault. Wherein the pressure in the airbags was too much for it to rupture in high-intensity situations for 2016 models, whereas the 2017 models ran the risk of overheating the electric coolant pump in its 2.0L Turbo FSI engine. Both these issues have been taken care of and the 2020 Audi A5 literally comes out as a car with no issues. Except for the loss in value figures, the Audi A5 is a pretty reliable vehicle.

Warranty

Audi’s warranty is not the best in its competition. It’s on par with its German manufacturers. However, Audi’s optional Unlimited Miles Roadside Assistance does put the cherry but when seen in comparison to other non-German manufacturers, it’s ain’t the best. Even complimentary scheduled maintenance is limited to just one year or 10,000 miles.

Miles Per Dollar Cost of the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback

Buying a $40,000 car has its perks as well as shortcomings. As good as it feels to show off this vehicle, hidden costs to maintain that gloss can at times get on your nerves. However, as far as the Audi A5 is concerned, it tries to come off as a convenient mode of transportation. With a cost of just $0.77 per mile, the Audi A5 will sound very reasonable. However, when added over a period of five years the A5 Sportback is not that cheap of a car to maintain.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback Buying Advice

The Premium Plus definitely stands out for the host of standard comfort and driving features. This begs to ask the question, should you buy the base Premium model? Well, if budget is a restraint then the Premium trim of 2021 Audi A5 Sportback will not disappoint with its standard features too, and if it wears the 45 badges then performance is merrier too. But what makes the Premium plus a giveaway is it is almost on par with the Prestige, without rear heated seats and a handful of other gizmos, and yet it costs less than the Prestige trim. So, if the A5 is something that you have been considering, go for the Premium Plus trim, eyes closed.

Is buying a used Audi A5 worth it?

With cars like the Audi that mark the start of luxurious segments, has its own sets of ups and downs. Provided this is a used Audi, there will be miles and a bunch of wear and tears here and there. Inspection should be done really carefully. Another factor with the Audi A5 is its past. If you’re buying a 2015/16 or 2017 model, make sure you get a detailed maintenance history of the vehicle. For this year models, were recalled for faulty airbags and engine coolant problems from debris. Aside from that, be prepared to make some serious expenses for cars of this segment are not that cheap to maintain over longer periods.

Audi has retained the same turbo-inline-four engine but this time they also come with a 12V mild-hybrid system, with a belt0driven alternator and starter, that can recuperate energy and store it in a small lithium-ion battery. This not only makes the new engine efficient with a start-stop system but also reduces C02 emissions, as claimed by Audi.

Mercedes-Benz in this case becomes the same On paper, the Germans easily outshine the Kia in the list of powerful engines, but this Korean hits its torque peak as early as 1400 rpm. That gives it that slight age over its competitor with a much quicker pace.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback Acceleration and Braking Performance

The A5 is not the fastest of cars but it is quick enough for a car that has a curb weight of 3,725 lbs. Being the heaviest in its segments has its perks as well as disadvantages. Audi has thoroughly worked on the agility of the car, and that has significantly helped. The 2021 Audi A5 45 TFSi can cross the 60 MPH marker from a standstill in a mere 5.4 seconds and the 40 TFSi badge takes 6.4 seconds to do the same.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback Accelerate 0-60 MPH in 5.7 sec

Not the fastest of results but definitely quick. When it comes down to their braking performances the BMW takes the cake away again, with the least distance followed by the Mercedes Benz and the Audi A5. Official braking performance of the Kia Stinger will be somewhere between 120-130 feet, provided its curb weight is as heavy as the Audi A5 Sportback.

BMW outshines all its competitors in this area. Reaching 0-60 in 5.6 seconds provided it's almost as heavy as the Audi. However, its top speed is not the greatest just like the Audi A5. Both Mercedes and Kia takes the cake away with their top speed figures.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback Ride & Handling

The 2021 Audi A5 Sportback ride quality is as sublime as you can expect from any other Audi. The road abnormalities are dealt with in a very composed manner. At high speeds, the 2021 A5 feels very composed and thanks to its low roofline, there is no significant body roll encountered by the driver. On high-speed bends, the A5 sticks to the lines in a very effortless manner.

The 2021 Audi A5 Sportback also performs well in terms of handling as well. The S-Tronic Dual Clutch transmission makes the power available throughout the rev limit and the QUATTRO All-Wheel-Drive distributes all the power very efficiently to all the four corners, which makes it a perfect driver through almost all driving conditions.

Combustion engines have been subjected to all kinds of technological developments. These have not only optimizes at all speed levels but also reduce fuel consumptions and exhaust emission. The new mild-hybrid system on the Audi is one such example. The Audi A5 Sportback without the mild-hybrid setup returned a combined economy of 26 mpg which was pretty much on par with BMW, which uses a similar system, but it has 48-volt. Although the EPA estimates of the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback have not been revealed yet, we expect it to perform better than the previous generations.

Having introduced the mild-hybrid system in this segment way before the other two Germans, the Mercedes-Benz has significantly improved the efficiency. With a combined efficiency of 30 mpg, it is not only the most efficient in this competition but will also go the longer distance. The Kia Stinger, on the other hand, is the least fuel-efficient in this competition.

The philosophy behind the design of the Audi A5 is based on sharing. It shares elements from the A4 sedan and that is pretty evident from the exterior styling, except for the swooping roofline that makes the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback really unique and plush to look at.

8.0/10

There’s a wide range of driving assistance features available to the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback and that makes it one of the safest vehicles to drive. Audi A5 Sportback vs BMW 3 series

Both Audi and BMW follow different paths with their sedans. While the Audi is more conservative with its looks, the BMW comes off across as more dynamically designed. Both have a luxurious interior but Audi’s rear headroom takes a beating because of the swooping roofline and that affects the rear legroom space too. But the BMW on the other hand follows a much more practical approach with its conventional sedan styling. So, if it comes down to choosing out of the two, the BMW will make more sense with its practicality.

Aside from that, Mercedes-Benz’s interior is much glossier than the Audi A5, courtesy the large TFT screen that sits in the dashboard of the Merc. It is one of the tech-rich cars but Audi’s MIB infotainment system is much faster and responsive than Merc’s.
