The A4 returns with some massive changes for 2021. For 2021, these 2.0L Turbocharged 4-cylinders will be assisted by a 12-volt hybrid. The Front-Wheel Drive models have been dropped and now the A4 will have All-Wheel Drive as its standard powertrain, across the lineup. Along with these changes, there have been additions to the creature comforts list and driver assistance in all the trims. With specs like these, and at this price point, the 2021 Audi A4 goes against the Mercedes Benz C300 4MATIC, the Lexus IS 300 F Sport and the BMW 330i xDrive. Let’s dwell deeper into what the new A4, which will be launching in the Fall of 2020, has to offer.

There are many packages that you can add to your selected trim to increase the comfort and convenience that the A4 provides. 2021 Audi A4 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Audi makes the most technologically and mechanically competent cars with very high-reliability quotient and powerful engine options. Audi cars are one of those cars which age well. JD Power also indicates that A4 owners have a very fuss-free ownership experience because of the engineering that leads the Audi cars to be the best in class.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The 2021 Audi A4 starts at just a notch above $40,000 and the range-topping Prestige trim costs nearly $50,000. There are many areas where owning an Audi A4 is not that much of an expensive option. Some of these states are

Audi’s claim of being a reliable car also is cemented by the fact that there were no recalls for the latest-generation A4. What is more surprising is that the NHTSA reports 0 consumer complaints regarding the A4! Talking of repairs, as the Audi falls under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group, expect these prices to be a little bit more than the others out there.

When it comes to the ownership cost a 2020 Audi A4 will cost nearly $55,000 for 5 years, if driven for 15,000 miles each year. The A4 has been riddled by depreciation and this is one thing that sticks to all the luxury cars of this time. All the other cars in the segment demand a similar cost to own in this time period.

Warranty

Audi provides an average warranty among the other brands in the luxury segment. The Limited Warranty lasts covers 4 years or 50,000 miles. There’s also a Powertrain Warranty of the same mileage and time duration. The complimentary maintenance is also average and is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles. The A4 is also covered under Audi’s 24-Hour Roadside Assistance for 4 years, at no additional charge.

Miles Per Dollar

We had put an estimate of $55,000 for 5 years, 15,000 miles each year. This equates to $55,000 for 75000 miles, that is, a running cost of $0.73 per mile! This calculation factors in may parameters like depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, etcetera.

2021 Audi A4 Buying Advice

To us, the Premium Plus is the trim to go for as it provides the best cost-to-benefit ratio. It adds a host of features to the table such as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus, a wireless smartphone charging pad, memory function for the driver’s seat, keyless entry system and LED DRLs. Driver Assistance package also offers a nice deal by adding adaptive cruise control and active lane assist to the mix. Finally, we’d suggest the more powerful engine option because of the extra ponies it makes, without compromising on the frugality.

Is buying a used Audi A4 a good idea?

According to Edmunds.com, the depreciation for a 2020 Audi A4 is nearly a massive 24.12% for year 1 and then it tends to slow down to 12%. So, getting a used one will save you some good money. We’d recommend a second-hand A4 any day due to its high-reliability quotient and the impressive build quality. The engine options are robust and they tend to last nearly 80,000 to 100,000 miles without any mechanical hassles, given the maintenance scheduled is followed diligently.

2021 Audi A4 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Under the hood is a 2.0L TSFI turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which is tuned to provide different outputs in different trims. The lower output variant, which comes as standard in all A4s, pumps out 201 ponies and 236 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful state of the tune gives the 2.0L turbo-4 an increment of 60 horsepower and 37 lb-ft. Both the powerplants will be assisted by a 12-volt hybrid system which will give a further boost if 13 horsepower to the engine. Both the powertrains are mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic Dual Clutch Automatic transmission which directs all the power to the road through Audi’s Quattro All-Wheel Drive system.

2021 Audi A4 Sedan Engine Bay

The Turbo 4-banger does not feel underpowered on the highways. City driving is a breeze with the perfectly tuned suspension doing its job well. You are getting air suspension which will make the drive even plusher. The 7-speed auto makes gear shifting smooth and slick which means overtaking isn’t an issue for the A4.

For 2021, the Audi A4 gains hybrid assistance which adds 13 horsepower to the equation, at 0 RPM. All the cars here are equipped with All-Wheel Drive and automatic gearboxes. The A4 has a dual-clutch setup making the shifts seamless. The Lexus here tops the power output race with the most brute and as it is a naturally aspirated one, it gives some amazing melody out of its exhaust. The torque on it comes way later in the RPM band due to the naturally aspirated setup. Talking of torque, the Bimmer tops the torque game, which is produced way early in its RPM range all thanks to the turbo setup. The rest have similar torque outputs.

2021 Audi A4 Acceleration and Braking Performance

The 2.0L Turbo 4-banger on the 2020 A4 did the 0-60 sprint in just 5.1 seconds, with the quarter-mile standing at 13.8 seconds. The Quattro All-Wheel Drive system works wonders when it comes to putting all the power down on the ground efficiently and kudos also goes to the S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission to enable smooth and quick gear changes.

For the 2021 model year, the 2.0L turbo-4 engines will be assisted by a 12-volt hybrid which will aid the A4 to reach better acceleration figures and better quarter-mile timings due to the extra 13 horsepower being available from the start.

2021 Audi A4 Sedan Accelerate 0-60 MPH in just 5.0 sec

The braking system remains the same for the 2021 model year. The Quattro All-Wheel Drive system provides very good traction at all times which automatically translates to a solid braking performance. That being said, this system along with the 13.3-inch rotors in the front and 13-inch rotors at the rear, makes the A4 one of those sedans that can come to a halt from 60 miles per hour in below 100 feet! The brake pedal feels firm and the travel on the pedal is perfect for day-to-day commutes. The bite from the brakes is good and there are no signs of fading anywhere during braking.

Currently, the Audi A4 is the fastest car off the line, to cross the quarter-mile and also, to come to a halt. That kind of number is unmatched even by more powerful sedans, like the Lexus IS350 with its V6! The Mercedes remains the slowest performer in terms of acceleration because of the time the turbos take to spool up. It is also very lazy on the brakes. The Bimmer is very close to the Audi but is limited by its xDrive system which doesn’t provide as much traction as the Quattro does.

2021 Audi A4 Fuel Economy

8.0/10

There’s a turbo 4-banger powering the A4, which, considering is just a 2-liter powerplant, provides impressive fuel economy. The EPA rates the fuel economy for the A4 at 23 in the city and 34 on the highway. The combined EPA rated economy turns out to be 26 miles per gallon. There’s a 15.3-gallon fuel tank storing all the gas that you need to enjoy your commutes and a long drive.

The 2021’s 12-volt hybrid system will provide better fuel economy which isn’t rated by the EPA as of yet. We expect an increment of nearly 10 mpg if driven sanely. Remember folks, more the spirit in driving lesser the miles you get per gallon.

The disadvantage of a bigger naturally aspirated engine is very evident here in case of the Lexus. It has a similar tank to the Merc but gives out way fewer miles per gallon due to the comparatively inefficient V6 under its hood. Talking of the Merc, it also has the bigger tanks of the comparison and provides the most range, everywhere! The Bimmer also outclasses the Audi here posting better mpg figures and range.

2021 Audi A4 Interior

8.0/10

Inside, the A4 is a nice, simple and clean design. you have soft-touch materials on the dashboard, the door panels, door armrest, on the center armrest and near the center console. Even the door bins have soft-touch material! The steering wheel is very well built and the stocks do not feel cheap either. Turning climate control knobs feels very nice. They are extremely sturdy and feel very premium.

The seats provide ample support and make driving very comfortable. They are made of leather which gives a very premium feeling to the seats. Although, upgrading to the higher trim will get you sport seats which is a mix of leather and Alcantara. The seats are heated also and get ventilation too to keep your butt comfortable. The headroom is a lot and the front occupants won’t feel tight. The steering wheel offers a lot of tilt and rake adjustment and a flat bottom, giving out a sporty feel.

2021 Audi A4 Sedan Front Seats

Talking of the boot, it is a nice and square boot and is dead easy to pack full. There is a bit of a load lip but for a sedan, it is easy to get things in and out. you also get tethering points to tie down things and there’s a net on either side of the boot. The boot is good for fitting in 2 large suitcases, 2 small suitcases, and a set of golf clubs.

The Bimmer provides a cavernous cabin both in the front and at the rear. It can easily fit in 5 people inside. Tall people won’t find it a hassle to fit. The Lexus provides a nice and big cabin in the front but the rear might prove to be a bit of a squeeze and not recommended for tall occupants. The Merc and the Audi have similar on-sheet dimensions but the Audi proves to be a tad bigger to fit in people comfortably. The Merc and the Audi also have similar boot space, with the Audi just edging ahead of the Merc. The BMW has the biggest trunk and the Lexus, the smallest.

How's the 2021 Audi A4's Infotainment System?

The infotainment system is a 10.1-inch touchscreen. There’s no swivel wheel to control it like there was in the previous generation. The shortcut icons on the side are large enough to not distract you while driving. It also makes a clicking sound when you touch them. The system is a very high resolution one and responds quickly to the touch inputs.. You get AM/FM/XM radio as standard with HD radio. Talking of smartphone integration, there’s smartphone integration through Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

2021 Audi A4 Sedan Infotainment System

There’s Audi’s Virtual Cockpit behind the steering wheel which is a 12.3-inch display. It shows the speedometer and the tachometer. You can also change their size and customize the display according to your liking. You can have your navigation on the virtual cockpit along with information about your car’s settings, drive modes, rear-view camera, etc.

Some of the key highlighting features of this infotainment are:

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display
  • Front USB Ports for data transfer and charging

8.0/10

The A4 is a very smart looking car. It got a new headlight and all LED taillights and a more pronounced grille, giving the A4 a fresh look for 2020. The A4 takes a more conventional approach towards its styling. The profile is stylish and box-like, leaving the sloping roofline to the Sportbacks. There have been tweaks made to the bumper as well. You get silver trims to make the A4 feel more premium. There are creases that have been added to the rear three-quarters, inspired by the A6. The front bumper has been tweaked too and now you also get a vent between the headlights.

The BMW weighs in as the heaviest and with the longest wheelbase. But it carries all the weight well and rides smooth. Even the braking is impressive but not as impressive as the Audi. The Audi stands the longest of the bunch and also the widest. The height is similar to the others. All this dimension is very smartly utilized to provide maximum space inside for the occupants. The Merc has the weight advantage here and is also the lowest to the ground which means you are more likely to scrape the under-side of your Merc than the others in the group.

2021 Audi A4 Safety

9.0/10

Audi has fit in a lot of safety tech inside the A4 which include adaptive cruise control, lane departure prevention, Matrix LEDs, active lane keep assist, etc. In case of a crash, there are 8 airbags to provide a cushion in case of a crash. There are crumple zones inside the chassis that can send the impact of the crash away from the occupants.

When crash-tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS, the A4 achieves the highest accolades – a ‘5-star- rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick accolade from the IIHS.

2021 Audi A4 Competition

9.1/10

2021 Audi A4 vs. Mercedes Benz C300 4MATIC

The C-Class is Merc’s entry point in the market and it offers a lot of kit for an entry car. The brand focuses on providing the utmost luxury and comfort to the occupants for as little as it can, but only the rear ones. The A4 provides all that the Mercedes offers, but with a sporty character to it. It caters to the front occupants too. The Mercedes outclasses the Audi in terms of in-cabin tech but the Audi proves that it is a better driving machine.

2021 Mercedes Benz C300 4MATIC Sedan

2021 Audi A4 vs. Lexus IS 350

The Lexus provides a very strong powerplant under its hood which sounds good but the A4 bags all the performance attributes. The A4 is more frugal, has better acceleration and stops well than the Lexus. The Lexus almost mimics a full-size sedan and thus has a weight disadvantage. Both the cars are similarly equipped on the inside and offer a lot of creature comforts. The Lexus is, being a Japanese, more reliable than the Audi and the repair costs are very low.

2021  Lexus IS 350 Sedan

2021 Audi A4 vs. BMW 330i xDrive

The Bimmer is the one that provides tough competition to the Audi in terms of performance. It is more frugal and also has a very robust powertrain but is bogged down by an inferior All-Wheel Drive system. It also has the superior iDrive infotainment system which is a very intuitive one to use. The Audi is very well-balanced and provides the best mix between comfort, practicality and performance but looking at what BMW offers, it might not look as great a proposition.

2021  BMW 330i xDrive Sedan

2021 Audi A4 Final Verdict

8.1/10

The 2021 Audi A4 is the most fitting car for someone who wants the ultimate comfort while driving, around town or on highways. It is fun to drive and has a lot of safety tech on board to make the drive a safe one. The Quattro helps in putting the power down smoothly and you can also go long distances on this. With the hybrid powertrain coming in in 2021, you can rest assured that the A4 will act as your long-termer with the subsequent ownership costs getting down.

A series is the best one from Audi and beats all competitions for sure. Comes short of few things but everything under the hood is nicely designed and works flawlessly. Although A4 is a little more inclined towards zippy driving dynamics but that doesn't stop it to give out one of those business suit dressed drives sort of vibe.

Audi is arguably ahead of everyone else

Audi is arguably ahead of every other make on this planet and if anyone reading this doesn't agree, you might want to drive one so that we're on the same page. The best part, all the aspects are perfect and it still stays great on gas.

Skillfully crafted interiors of our Audi A4

Never faced any issues with it while driving. I assume that's what they call a good car.

A best ride. :P

The best ride money can buy

2.0L engine delivering the sporty performance and at the same time nailing the looks inside out. Sounds more like a lie until you get hands on an Audi A4 like I did. This is hands down the best car I've owned till now. It has a sporty aspect to the driving but never misses to drive smooth.
