2020 Audi A4 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

When it comes to compact luxury sedans, their dedication to balance gives them a hard time. Manufacturers struggle to put together a package that offers opulence and performance without letting the price go too out of reach. Thankfully, the Audi A4 has adhered rightly to that formula.

With its powerful-yet-efficient TFSI engine and a long list of standard creature comforts, it is no wonder that it is one of the best-selling sedans in its segment. The redesign of 2017 had a few rough patches that have been fixed for 2020, making the latest version look as sporty as ever.

Overall Rating

What makes the Audi A4 so remarkable is the fact that this car caters to both the driver and the passengers at the same time. A powerful 2.0L drivetrain that is quick and engaging works well with a spacious interior that been the very benchmark for build quality in the industry. Starting out at $37,400, you get a clear notion as to why Audi names its base-level trim ‘Premium’. The add-on packages and stand-alone packages only help sweeten the deal. Furthermore, every Audi A4 is eligible for a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty package that ensures your vehicle remains in optimum condition.

Still, the competition has not been sitting idle. With numerous new emerging technologies, Mercedes-Benz has been upgrading its C-Class lineup to go toe-to-toe with the A4 sedan. Even the BMW 3-series has received quite a lot of upgrades that make it a serious contender to challenge the Audi A4. On the far side of the Pacific, Lexus has its own powerful version of the IS sedan that restricts Audi’s breathing room in the United States. Let’s see if the subtle upgrades this year get the A4 a necessary leg up.

9.0/10

The Audi A4 lineup is simple. Three trims separated on a $4,500 price difference. The lineup starts at $37,400 with Premium(*chuckles*). It gets you most of the safety and infotainment features. Leather upholstery comes as standard, although you might notice some cloth inserts at the bottom of the barrel. Upgrading to the Premium Plus gets you Audi’s famed Virtual Cockpit and much better seats. The Prestige trim stands at the top of the hill with state-of-the-art driving aids and the finish fit for appearing in the next ‘Transporter’ movie.

What would we recommend?

Since the Prestige wraps all the features in a compact package, it is the best one to go for. It still doesn’t cross the $50,000-mark with the Audi Safety Sense package, and the adaptive damping suspension makes the ride much more comfortable.

2020 Audi A4 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

You can choose one of two available TFSI engines. Both are similar in displacement, yet the greater compression ratio lets the 45 TFSI develop more power. Supplying all four wheels with 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, this one is undoubtedly the better choice. Upgrading on its predecessors, the new powerhouse raises the pressure to the turbo by 0.8 bar, making the turbos spool faster and, therefore, making throttle response much better.

The power is delivered through a dual-clutch S-Tronic 7-speed gearbox that features active rev-matching to account for the aggressive downshifts and maintain higher revs around steep corners. You have to do more than a bit of trying to get this thing to miss a mark. The Audi select drive system lets you control the response of the transmission, with quicker shifts in Sport and smoother shifts in Comfort mode.

For all its adroitness, the powertrain is the weakest when compared to other compact luxury sedans in this segment. The Lexus IS 350 is the most powerful with its massive 3.5L V6 generating 311 hp while the BMW 330i is the zippiest with the most torque. No other car can match the Quattro AWD system on the A4, but the Merc’s transmission outshines the Audi’s through its tighter gear ratios and increased number of operational clogs.

Is the A4 Sedan fast?

Even though it’s the least powerful, the Quattro AWD system helps get the A4 hit all the horses on the tarmac in the right way. The Audi A4 has the best-in-class acceleration, achieving 60 mph from a standstill in 5.1 seconds. Keep the foot down and the quarter-mile mark whizzes through before you know it. Top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph, although Audi claims that the A4 can easily go past 160.

That kind of performance is unmatched by even more powerful sedans like the Lexus IS 350. The Mercedes C-Class loses the plot since its turbos just too long to kick in to make a difference. BMW builds the 3-series sedan on a lightweight chassis that gives it some agility, yet the A4 outruns the Bimmer due to the latter’s inferior AWD system.

How good are the brakes?

Good traction translates to better braking performance as well. The Audi A4 is one of the few compact sedans that can come to a halt from 60 mph in less than 100 feet. At city speeds, the Automated Emergency Braking system works perfectly fine, protecting pedestrians and other vehicles from serious damage even if you are a bit distracted. The pedal is firm and the travel is just right to keep the car composed at high speeds, while not being too squishy in stop-and-go traffic.

While the Bimmer comes close to matching the Audi A4 for its braking performance, its xDrive system does not let it gain enough traction to get it ahead, even with summer performance tires. The Lexus IS 350 with RWDhttps://www.carindigo.com/lexus/is-300 doesn’t pack a lot of stopping power, which is amended by its AWD F Sport variant. The Merc loses out due to its smaller brakes and uneven weight distribution over its long chassis.

Does the Audi A4 deliver on ride and handling?

The Audi A4 is not a lightweight sedan, yet its chassis distributes weight evenly to make it sharp and direct around corners. The adaptive steering is a great marvel that adjusts the steering ratio electronically depending on the car’s speed. However, it takes away from the natural feedback from the road that ruins the drive for the more engaging drivers.

2020 Audi A4 Sedan Side View

In terms of ride quality, it is as supple as you can expect from a luxury sedan. With the adaptive damping suspension, the A4 can soak up most irregularities on the road and provide decent stability around corners when you engage Sport mode. The Prestige trim benefits from the acoustic glass on the front windows that help keep most of the road noise out at highway speeds.

2020 Audi A4 Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Utilizing Audi’s patented Valvelift technology, the TFSI engine grants a good fuel economy. The Audi A4 45 TFSI returns a respectable overall mileage of 27 mpg, which means it takes good care of not extending the monthly gas bill too much if you use it to commute to the workplace on a daily basis. That also means that the car doesn’t need a large fuel tank to possess a long driving range, making it an ideal choice for the occasional out-of-town trips.

Like most of its German competitors, the Audi A4 returns a lot of miles per gallon of fuel due to its small displacement. Still, the Mercedes-Benz C300 and the BMW 330i manage a higher highway number due to the cylinder deactivation and optimized turbochargers. The Lexus IS 350 lags behind the pack due to its bigger V6 engine.

2020 Audi A4 Interior

8.0/10

It may be a superb machine to drive, but the real highlights of the overall design of the Audi A4 lie inside the cabin. The build of the interior sets the standard for all other luxury sedans in this segment. You would be hard-pressed to find any faults with the finish. Leather upholstery with microsuede inserts comes standard, and you can feel the difference of aesthetics as you climb the trim ladder.

2020 Audi A4 Sedan Front Seats

The seating position is perfectly balanced between engaging and comfortable. You never feel too restrictive when entering or exiting the A4. The side bolsters are embedded close to the B-pillar, so the front passengers have plenty of wiggle room. All seats can have heating, ventilation, and massaging functions, depending on just how cozy you want this sedan to be. The best of the Audi A4 insides is brought out by a multi-color ambient LED lighting system that sets the perfect mood for everyone inside the car.

Interior space is a key factor when choosing a luxury sedan. For that, the Audi A4 fares just about average. Yes, it is convenient for most functions and luxury is plentiful if money is no matter, but some luxury sedans at this price point, such as the BMW 3-series, offer much more space on a similarly-sized wheelbase. In the case of Lexus and Merc, there are much better options for the interior finish and many more high-tech features than just a touchscreen on the dash.

Does the A4 have an advanced infotainment system?

Audi has been constantly upgrading its infotainment system to keep up with its rivals. Their signature is the MMI Virtual Cockpit display that runs through a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster on the driver-side dash. It is an adaptive system that works on-the-fly to display the most relevant information to the driver. A new 10.2-inch touchscreen sits at the center of the console that now controls most of the A4’s systems. Old-school dials and physical controllers are now completely done away with.

For its audio system, Audi goes with a Bang & Olufsen Premium Surround Sound System. This one features 19 speakers and a 16-channel digital amplifier to permeate a natural 3D surround throughout the cabin. It is nowhere near as good as the Burmester audio system on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class but serves you beautifully if you want to sit back and chill with your favorite tunes on the trip. The active noise cancellation works wonders, keeping the most annoying disturbances outside the cabin.

Some additional Infotainment features include:

  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • AM/FM/HD Radio
  • 2 USB Ports
  • Smartphone Signal Booster And Wireless Charger
  • Bluetooth Hands-Free Connectivity
  • Auxiliary Cable Input
  • SD Card Reader
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Heads-Up Display with Integrated Navigation

Does the Audi A4 offer good cargo space?

The sleek front cabin finish leaves a lot of space in the back for storing cargo in the Audi A4. The trunk is widely spaced with easy access to the corners for storing wide suitcases. You can operate the trunk remotely with the key fob, although Audi still doesn’t offer a kick-open gesture like what you get in the Q8 SUV. In its class, the Audi A4 has the most trunk volume, surpassed only by the BMW 330i.

As for small-item storage, the Audi A4 has cupholders and cubby compartments for all the passengers in the car. The side pockets are adequately roomy to store laptop bags or purses, whereas a slide-open tray that is fit for storing wallets, while an overhead pocket allows for securely storing sunglasses. There is also a dedicated smartphone stand that may feature wireless charging depending on whether or not you opt for the Audi Phone Box upgrade.

The 2020 update to the Audi A4 redesigns the front and rear bumper, giving a more aggressive stance to the sedan while still keeping the traditional grille and taillight assembly carry on. Overall, this version looks much better than the 2019 Audi A4, which still had a few complaints from the fans since Audi redesigned the entire package back in 2017. No changes for the color schemes this year, although Audi now offers chrome and high-gloss aluminum finish for the Premium trim.

2020 Audi A4 Sedan Three Quarter View

It is best to go for the signature LED DRLs. These bring out the true character of the car and let bystanders know that you are coming from miles off. Puffing up the rear design is a set of dual exhaust tips that deliver the glorious sound of the engine. Other than that, the panels are kept elegant and simple, with no sharp edges to throw the lines off of the aluminum body.

Is the Audi A4 a large and heavy sedan?

With an overall length of 186 inches, the Audi A4 is the largest executive sedan in its segment. Not surprising, considering the shape of the car would ruin the airflow if the body was shrunk down. The base trim has a running ground clearance of 5 inches, which can be adjusted to a margin of 1.5 inches both ways with the adaptive damping suspension.

The A4’s weight is comparable to all other luxury sedans in this segment, which means a win for the driving dynamics as the car never feels so heavy. The longest wheelbase is possessed by the 3-series Bimmer that keeps its weight distribution much better. Mercedes-Benz keeps the C-Class sedan down low, while the Lexus IS 350 has the slimmest profile because of its short track width.

2020 Audi A4 Safety

9.0/10

Being the 2019 Top Safety Pick Plus sedan for the IIHS is no small feat, yet the Audi A4 has achieved just that. It has received near-perfect scores from both the IIHS and NHTSA, making it the safest luxury sedan for American roads. Thanks to its aluminum chassis with optimized crumple zones, much of the energy from a crash is easily diverted away from the passengers. A set of 8 airbags keep the passengers away from any harm caused by impact with the dash.

And that is if you get into a crash in the first place, which is next to impossible with the advanced suite of driver aids and safety systems aboard the A4. Audi really went all-in this year, making the Safety Sense system standard and optimizing the blind-spot monitoring to account for fast-moving objects. Both the standard and optional systems scored a ‘Superior’ rating with the IIHS, keeping the car collision-free at speeds up to 35 mph.

Safety Features

  • Electronic Stability Control(ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact beams
  • Dual-Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Airbags
  • Front And Rear Parking Sensors
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Audi A4 vs Mercedes-Benz C300

Mercedes-Benz has always earned some serious respect. The C-Class is where the luxury brand truly picks up and takes the initiative to offer more comfort for passengers. Only the rear ones, mind you. It is not nearly as fun to drive as the Audi A4. Its non-sporty character is reflected on the outside, with executive styling and not-so-meek finish all around the exterior. The Merc beats the Audi in terms of technology. For the interior and safety of the car, the Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan utilizes the futuristic tech that the A4 can only dream of.

2020 Mercedes-Benz C300

Audi A4 vs BMW 3-series

Taking a step away from its performance roots, the 3-series sedan is now more luxurious and refined than its previous generations. Not many cars survive when loading up on opulent features and making more space, but this Bimmer proves that it was all for the better. This trend has enabled the Audi A4 to have much better driving dynamics and performance, despite BMW having a superior drivetrain. Yet, its balanced notion between practicality, agility, and comfort makes you question whether you would churn out the extra cash for the A4.

2020 BMW 3-series

Audi A4 vs Lexus IS 350

Only a few luxury brands from Asia can match the Audi A4 for its opulence. The Lexus IS 350 sedan takes charge as the compact sedan up for the challenge. However, ‘compact’ is a bit too far considering that it resembles more to full-size sedans for its dimensions. Lexus lacks Audi’s technology and efficiency but more than makes up for it in practicality and reliability. Not to mention the massive V6 engine that gives off a more satisfying growl every time you pin the throttle down.

2020 Lexus IS 350

2020 Audi A4 Final Verdict

8.1/10

With whatever few flaws it had now remedied, the Audi A4 earns the A-list car tag that it definitely deserves. It is a fun automobile that juggles wonderfully in various aspects of a compact luxury sedan. It’s a shame that still no hybrid powertrain is known to be in the works, making it a more suitable car for the future. Yet, it is a package that serves you well enough to consider it as a long-term companion.

"Audi is arguably ahead of everyone else"

Audi is arguably ahead of every other make on this planet and if anyone reading this doesn't agree, you might want to drive one so that we're on the same page. The best part, all the aspects are perfect and it still stays great on gas.

Never faced any issues with it while driving. I assume that's what they call a good car.

A series is the best one from Audi and beats all competitions for sure. Comes short of few things but everything under the hood is nicely designed and works flawlessly. "The best ride money can buy"

2.0L engine delivering the sporty performance and at the same time nailing the looks inside out. Sounds more like a lie until you get hands on an Audi A4 like I did. This is hands down the best car I've owned till now. It has a sporty aspect to the driving but never misses to drive smooth.
