For starters, the 2.0-liter inline-four of the regular Stelvio gets a transplant from Ferrari. So the Stelvio Quadrifoglio sources power from a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 rated to produce 505 hp and 443 lb.-ft. torque. Consequently, in order to make it V8-ready, Alfa Romeo upgraded the Stelvio Quadrifoglio with carbon-ceramic brakes, sports exhaust, fatter tires and improved intake and cooling components for the more powerful engine.

What’s also been upgraded is the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s price. At $80,245, it is about twice as expensive as the regular Stelvio. This puts the Stelvio Quadrifoglio up against the likes of BMW X6 M50i and Jeep Grand Cherokee. All these midsize crossovers are plenty luxurious and all the more sporty, but the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a lot sportier.

Unlike the rest of the Stelvios, this Alfa Romeo is an exclusive package that comes equipped with a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8. This engine makes 505 hp and 443 lb.-ft. torque. So if the standard Stelvio is fast, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a trailblazer.

Other upgrades on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio include higher performance-oriented brakes, sportier suspension, fatter tires and bigger components to cool the bigger engine. Besides that the ZF eight-speed automatic remains unchanged. However, this Stelvio comes exclusively with the all wheel drivetrain only.

Standard on the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio are carbon-ceramic brakes that feature an all-electric assist system. But braking on this Alfa Romeo is so sharp it is disturbing. The feedback from them is such that drivers might find themselves struggling with nose-dive more regularly than they might prefer.

None of the midsize luxury crossovers in this segment have been tested for their stopping capabilities. However, the standard Stelvio stops in under 117 feet. So it’s fair to assume that the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s braking should also be that sharp.

What about its driving dynamics?

With its Ferrari sourced engine and other underpinnings borrowed from the Guilia, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a hairpin-hero. It’s relatively shorter wheelbase and precise 50/50 weight distribution makes the Stelvio Quadrifoglio switch sides quicker than some of the sportier sedans on the market. While the stiffer chassis responds extremely well to the driver's inputs, the wider tires provide better grip and improved stability.

But the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is equally fun off the tracks too. Even though the suspension and steering all favor spirited driving, they aren’t overly sporty. Rather the Stelvio Quadrifoglio comfortably glides over most bumps with much ease. For a more comfortable ride, the Soft Suspension button on the Dynamic mode instantly softens the suspension for even more improved damping.

The smart eight-speed transmission sends power mostly to the rear wheels of this midsize luxury SUV. It also keeps the engine in economy friendly rev ranges while cruising. Consequently, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is relatively fuel efficient for such a high performance SUV.

While carbon-fiber trim rightly suits the Quadrifoglio’s sportiness, some thin and carelessly fitted plastics are a total eye-sore. They really take away from the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s Italian-ness. However, the standard sports seats are thicker and more heavily bolstered than on the standard Stelvio. They do a great job of keeping the driver in place while tackling corners.

In fact, everything in the first row is driver-oriented. From the buttons to the 8.8-inch touchscreen, all favor the person behind the wheels more than anyone else inside. This can be a let down for other occupants as availability of roominess inside the cabin isn’t praise-worthy either. The sloping roof and short wheelbase compromise both headroom and legroom. This can cause discomfort for passengers over longer commutes.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s strongest suit is it the way it performs despite being an SUV, but that’s not all. Simply because this SUV looks a lot better. This design, which draws inspiration from its low riding cousin, Giulia, is a testament to Alfa Romeo’s flawless styling.

Up front, the traditional tri-lobed grille and curves look a lot more in place as the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is bigger than the Guilia. The signature squinting headlights surround the shield grille and run deep into the flared fenders. As a result, the side profile of this Alfa Romeo looks more muscular than sporty. The Quadrifoglio four-leaf clover motif above the front wheel arches sets this Stelvio apart from the rest of the lineup.
