Alfa Romeo has been a company that has focused more on the “feel” of a car rather than number. They were insistent on concentrating on the drivability and the look of the car rather than pumping up their performance numbers. However, this all changed. Today, the company is making huge waves and their cars are out proving that Alfa Romeo is ready to take on the big names.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is the performance sedan offered by Alfa Romeo. With 505 horses packed under its hood, the all-new Quadrifoglio set the all-time record on the Nürburgring racetrack with a time of 7:32 minutes.

Alfa Romeo is not shy from challenging the established brands of the market. In 2019, they sponsored the “Bimmerfest”, a BMW festival. They used the fest to pit their cars against BMW’s. If we talk about the Giulia Quadrifoglio, its BMW rival will be the BMW M550 xDrive. Audi’s RS5 Sportback competes with Giulia Quadrifoglio as well. Both these machines put up a tough challenge for the Quadrifoglio, but will it be tough enough to beat it?

Another package that Alfa Romeo offers is the carbon fiber package. The Carbon Fiber Package adds the following to the Giulia Quadrifoglio:

  • Dark Miron Giulia Badge

Other than this, the Giulia Quadrifoglia can be equipped with a variety of options to increase its convenience, usability or safety.

What configuration do we recommend?

Equipping the Giulia Quadrifoglio with the Nero Edizione package seems more attractive to us rather than the Carbon Fiber Package. The Carbon Fiber Package doesn't make significant changes to the weight of the car, while the changes in appearance are more cost-efficient with the Nero Edizione Package.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan Engine and Performance

9.1/10

This Giulia was made with only one purpose in mind, to dominate its competition. Fighting that battle is the monstrous 2.9L Twin Turbo 90⁰ V6 which pushes out an impressive 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Developed by Ferrari derived engine speaks for himself. An engine which feels in its comfort zone when you push it to the absolute

The 8HP,  ZF Friedrichshafen AG’s 8-speed automatic transmission is what transmits all that power to the wheels. Transmissions made by ZF are used in supercars and ultra-premium vehicles, with names such as the Lamborghini Urus, Rolls Royce Phantom, Maserati Quattroporte, and the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera among many more. With shift times at 150 milliseconds, the Giulia Quattroporte is unbelievably fast.

Even though the Giulia QF doesn't make the most power on paper in the class, it costs the least. With its bigger engine, the BMW M550i xDrive makes the most power at 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The Audi is placed in the middle of the pack when compared via cost but not by power. In terms of performance number, the RS5 ranks at the bottom

What about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio's "0-60" timings?

Alfa Romeo claims that the new Giulia Quadrifoglio can get a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. While 3.8 seconds is quick on its own, independent testers have been able to push the car to actually achieve a time of 3.6 seconds

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio claims a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds

In the right hand, the Giulia QF is a lethal weapon. However, it needs the right tires to put all that power to the ground.

On paper, the RS5 Sportback schools the Alfa and the BMW. While people claim the Giulia QF can match the RS5’s acceleration, it is yet to be seen. The 550i xDrive, despite having the biggest engine, is the slowest in terms of acceleration, thanks to its heavy body.

How does the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio corner?

The all-weather tires Alfa Romeo has offered on the Giulia QF before has never done justice to it before. High-performance summer tires will be able to truly put all its power to the ground. Other than that, the Giulia QF’s fantastic suspension keeps its glued to the ground. While there is some amount of body roll in the corners, it isn't significant, at least not enough to disengage anyone from the exceptional performance the car is delivering.

The DNA drive mode selection that Alfa Romeo has offered in the past should make its way into the 2020 Giulia QF as well. Standing for Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency, the drive modes tune the performance of the car to get the maximum performance, provide a relaxed yet driving experience or optimize fuel efficiency respectively.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio "60-0"?

The brakes have not been changed for 2020. 14-inch brake rotors provide great braking performance while the brake pedals makes you feel in control. The only disappointment we have seen before is, again, the tires. The Giulia QF demands a set of performance tires to fully exploit what it is really capable of.

Although the brakes have not changed, the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio offers red anodized brake calipers with “Alfa Romeo” written across it.

It was surprising to see the heavy BMW give comparable braking performance to the much lighter Audi and Alfa Romeo. Being the heaviest in the class, and having comparatively smaller brakes, the BMW performs admirably. However, the podium goes to the Giulia QF, with a “60-0” stop distance of 102 feet, followed by the RS5 with 105 feet and finally the BMW with 106 feet.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan Fuel Economy

7.7/10

Getting 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway from a twin-turbo V6 cannot be considered bad. The “Advanced Efficiency” will offer increased fuel efficiency, however, we will need to test that claim further to actually see how much efficiency is increased. On a full tank, the Giulia QF can shell out somewhere between 260 to 360 miles.

The Giulia QF is also equipped with cylinder deactivation tech which shuts off some cylinders of the engine to improve fuel economy.

The Giulia QF loses the crown of Most Fuel Efficient and Range King to the BMW 550i xDrive. The difference in range between the Alfa and the BMW is due to their fuel tanks being of different sizes. The much bigger 18-gallon fuel tank. The RS5 and Giulia have similar efficiency but the Audi has a much higher highway range.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan Interior

7.5/10

The Giulia feels to have an overhauled interior this year. While it does incorporate elements from the previous model, the changes included are significant enough to make it seem completely refreshed. Starting off with the gauge cluster. Its new 7 inch TFT display has redesigned layouts and graphics and incorporates the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in it.

Starting off, the steering wheel has been redesigned. The new and improved steering wheel has less Alcantara and more leather. It was seen in the earlier cars that Alcantara had more wear and tear which diminishes the look of the interior after a while.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Rear Seats

The revised center console which the refreshed leather-wrapped gear shifter feels good in the hand and gives a premium feel to the interior.

The seats are the same as last year. Highly potent bucket seats keep you in place when you floor the gas pedal to shake the beast loose. The seating position is engaging. Plenty of views in all directions instill confidence in the drive.

Alfa Romeo has done a good job of isolating the cabin from outside sounds, however, there are some vibrations. However, don't fret, most of that vibration is from the V6 engine twisting the body as it revs higher. In our book, that's almost good.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio infotainment features?

At your fingertips, you get an infotainment system that has an 8.8-inch touchscreen. The screen in placed in the center well within reach of the driver and passenger both. The screen is responsive and intuitive, with enhanced graphics, configurable widgets, more capacity for personalization, and added vehicle performance pages.

The optional Harman Kardon audio setup bumps up the audio performance to the standard of the car performances in every other field. With a subscription to 12 months of SiriusXM Radio, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay it makes a complete package.

How big is the Cargo Space in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

The cargo space of the previous generation was set at 13 cubic feet. While the cargo space was comparable to competitors, the trunk on the Giulia QF opened higher and narrower to the others. This made packing it with heavy or large items rather difficult. However, the rear 60/40 split seats

Cargo space is where Giulia falls behind, with the least in class cargo space. Although the rear seats fold down to increase cargo space, the increase in space is not yet known. The RS5 21.8 cubic feet is the most spacious in the class. This is when the seats are still up. After the seats come down, the 35 cubic feet are crossing into SUV territory.

Most of the exteriors of the Giulia are the same as that of last year. Slowly but surely, the Quadrifoglio has been becoming an icon on the streets. The styling of the car has a lot to do with creating that particular image in the minds of the people to admire, want and fear this monstrosity. The tri-shaped front grille, the sleek headlights, a sporty indentation which starts from the fender vents all the way up to the rear fender, all make the car look ready to speed away.

The inclusion of an active front spoiler improves performance by limiting drag and increasing downforce according to the needs of the car.

9.9/10

While the focus of the Giulia QF has been on breathtaking performance, safety and security of the occupants are never compromised. With its new level 2 autonomous and driver safety features, the all-new ADAS features the following:

  • Highway assist system
  • Traffic jam assist system
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Active Blind Spot Assist
  • Driver attention alert

The 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio hasn't been crash-tested yet, but the safety features make it abundantly clear that the Giulia is safe. Some of them are:

  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Stability Control
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Traction Control
  • Pre-Collision Safety Systems
  • Front and Rear Head Airbags
  • Emergency Braking Assist

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs BMW 550i xDrive

Bigger engine means a heavier, sluggish body and fell fuel economy. However, it isn't the case here. While the BMW is heavier, it is anything but sluggish. Also, with a fuel tank much bigger than the Giulia QF. However, the Giulia can give the 550i a run for its money. With its powerful engine and quick transmission, the power difference between them might not be much, but it's apparent. For a slightly lesser sticker price, the Giulia offers what the BMW is capable of and more.

2020 BMW 550i xDrive Sedan

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs 2020 Audi RS5 Sportback

The RS5 looks visually more pleasing in our opinion. The sleek lines, the sloped back and the aggressive front look makes it look like a luxury yet fast vehicle, exactly what it is. However, with the looks come the compromises. A below-par rear cabin room makes it difficult to use on a daily basis. All that while costing much higher than the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Giulia QF not only can match the performance of the RS5, it can also match the amenities and luxuries the RS5 offers. Even though the cargo space is lesser on Giulia, in our opinion it offers the best bang for the buck and is the obvious choice.

2020 Audi RS5 Sportback

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Sedan Final Verdict

The legends of the Quadrifoglio are forged in steel. Alfa Romeo has given tears, sweat, and blood to make their cars what they are today. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is the pinnacle of their excellence. Not only does this car deliver comfort and satisfaction, the tremendous power it holds has the potential to outperform any of its rivals.

If you think that you can push the Quadrifoglio while you're driving a BMW M550 and win, you have another thing coming. Not only the Giulia QF push back, the last thing you’ll remember is the trails its tail lights leave behind and an afterimage of its 4 leaf clover badge, while the distant grunt of a V6 pierces your ears.

A proper sports car in almost half the price than the conventional big shot ones. The performance might not sound like enough at first but believe me when I say, 505 ponies take the driver's breath away when hitting the gas. Twin turbocharged engine does exactly what it's supposed to, delivering punchy acceleration. Low ground clearance and performance tires on the other hand help in pin point handling response where it sort of commits to the corners. Talking about the brakes, costed me another 8 grands and these have been working impeccable. Gives an extra set of confidence to floor the pedal know when you trust the brakes underneath.
