Alfa Romeo is one such automaker who truly value this experience and so it still has the explosive little 4C spider in its lineup for 2020. It is powered by a peppy little 1.7L turbocharged inline-four motor that pumps out enough power to bring a wide grin on your face. This grin comes for $67,150.

Technology has caught up and now threatens this thrill of a ride with the likes of more modern and cheaper counterparts from the likes of Jaguar, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. Will the 4C hold up to these modern players? We don’t know about that yet but it surely holds up in looks with its characterized body lines and creases.

This flared Italian is offered in one explosive trim which is powered by a 1.7L turbocharged inline-four engine. Yes, the engine is small, but the power isn’t. It produces a sprint willing 237 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque that is not much but will put a smile on your face, every time you floor it.

The power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 6-Speed automated manual transmission that is not anything near the newer quicker automatic transmission but makes it fun to drive.

Alfa Romeo has pitched in a limited edition 4C Spider Italia which is limited to just 15 units for North America. It is priced at $72,150 which adds exclusive exterior cues along with yellow brake calipers, micro-suede trimmed seats and an Akrapovič center-exit exhaust system. No mechanical upgrades whatsoever.

We recommend you to go for the limited edition Italia, as the added premium of $5000 is cheaper when compared to adding it on the base trim, considering the exclusive and performance additions you get. But you better hurry, as there are only 15 of them!

2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Engine

The little Italian beauty is equipped with a 1.7L inline-4 turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed automated manual transmission. It churns out 237 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque and transfers all that power to its rear wheels. Its turbocharged mid-engine layout makes for an enthusiastic machine on track, with an excellent weight-to-power ratio. But it's a shocker that the turbo setup experiences lag despite its small size.

The meager output of the powertrain is but just numbers, as the performance is top-notch and the 4C Spider is anything but slow. But it's resonating rumble from under the hood gets invasive after a certain time and can be distasteful for some. It is a rather special type of vehicle which is not a daily driver nor a highway muncher. It is made for those relaxing drives through the back roads that bring a wide grin on your face.

Looking at sheer figures, the Audi TT is at the end of this table with the least power output. The 4C comes just before it with bumped up power figure but still having the same torque. Jaguar F-TYPE is the most powerful of the lot with close to 300 horses.

How quick is the peppy little 2020 4C spider from 0-60?

Quite frankly, the numbers don't do justice to the performance of the 4C. Clocking 4.3 seconds in a 0-60 mph run while taking 13 seconds flat in the quarter-mile, the Alfa Romeo is technically the fastest of the lot.

A small car with small engine displacement is proportional to excellent fuel efficiency, one that can resemble any bread-and-butter hatchback. The small fuel tank steals you from having fun for longer durations but good things are better experienced crisp. Despite its go-kart character, the 4C chunks out commendable numbers which are more than the competition.

Head inside the 4C Spider and you'd feel claustrophobic just looking around; the small Italian packs a compact and minimalistic design at the same time reminding you that it's meant for track purposes. Comfort was barely in mind when designing this convertible. However, we don't blame the engineers since they gave their best. Leather and cloth sport seats with manual adjustments and leather-wrapped steering wheel make up the cabin and its materials are excellent in quality along with the trim.

Getting in and out is bound to be difficult since the car is set quite low to the road. Noise cancellation is poor due to the loud engine and the road vibrations easily enter the cabin. Due to the compact size, the 4C has poor visibility with the roof up. You're likely to experience the wind in your hair during most of the drives.

The Italia boasts of microsuede laden seats and an aluminum panel on the passenger side that says “4C Italia”. A punched panel on the center console shows you as of which serial number you possess.

What are the infotainment features available in the 2020 4C spider? 

The infotainment system is just bare bone here. We would suggest you to upgrade to the Alpine audio system if you ever get weary of the exhaust note. The upgraded head unit looks very mediocre but treats you with better speakers and a subwoofer.

The 2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Spyder looks much more premium than it truly is and this manages to turn heads. The ever so short design alongside a host of curves and sleek shoulder gives out a rather expressive sports car aesthetic than anything else. Heavily bestowed with deep air intakes on either side of the side profile, the soft top carries only two doors with a passenger and driver seat.

 Rolling on 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels, the Italian luxury convertible draws sensuous curves and elegance. Bug-like headlights with rounded taillights and dual sporty tailpipes blended with the iconic Alfa-Romeo grille and character lines lay bare its charming yet distinct character. The manually-operated cloth roof tucks inside the trunk when folded. Unlike the rest of convertibles in the competition, the 4C Spider is as light as a bee and that aids in its performance and handling. It even takes the crown for the shortest car on the track.

Or about the same but with better emphasis on comfort and daily-driver material? Your call.

Audi is the only four-seater convertible of the lot. It makes for a much better daily driver than the Alfa Romeo. It is cheaper and less powerful but is well stuffed with all of the modern gizmos on the inside. It's the same drill here, if you want a track-only car which can be used on the road, then the 4C is the one to go, but if you want to have the top down experience without compromising on practicality then Audi TT is the one to go for.

The C 300 is an eye turner but not as much as the Italian. It produces more power than the 4C and is cheaper as well. The 9-Speed Automatic transmission makes it fun to drive as well. But it is heavier and loses out on the efficiency. Being a Mercedes-Benz, features are modern and keeps you engaged while in the car. But that’s where the 4C is different. The C 300 might undercut it in all aspects but can never do so in sheer driving pleasure. So once again, practicality aside, The 2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is a blast to drive in a very small package. But if the functionality is your priority then the German makes much more sense.

2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Final Verdict

The 2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider can only be defined emotionally. As there is no practical side to this car. If we were to explain this car in one word, it would be RAW. There are no driver assistance features and the steering is purely mechanical. It gives you the joy of being one with the car and enjoying it to the fullest, which is, unfortunately, missing in the cars of today.

The nimble little Italian is enough to turn around the worst of your days and that is something for which we would happily have it.
