Overall Rating

The 2020 Acura RLX, borrows it’s gas powerplant from the standard RLX. However, the Hybrid Powertrain is something that you will see in the other Acura Hybrid’s and boy, is that one hell of refined unit. For a Sedan that costs around 60 grand, Acura has ensured that they have left no stone unturned in terms of the features that they are offering with the RLX Hybrid. You get Ventilated Seats, a Premium 14 Speaker Krell Audio System, Tri-Zone Automatic AC and a lot more as standard in the 2020 RLX Hybrid. Acura is bundling it’s AcuraWatch driver assist as standard and a lot more, in terms of driver assistance features as standard in the RLX Hybrid.

Who does the Acura goes up against? Well, there are plenty of Hybrid’s at the Acura’s price point but it’s the Volvo S90 that comes the closest in terms of features and power. Perspective buyers can look for the BMW 530e or the Mercedes E Class Hybrid, if they wanna look beyond the Volvo S90.

Which trim to go for?

With just one trim on offer, the 2020 Acura RLX Hybrid can be opted for in just the Technology trim. However, this trim comes loaded with all the modern bells and whistles that you’d expect from a Hybrid Sedan in this category but at a far lesser asking price.

2020 Acura RLX hybrid Sedan Engine

7.6/10

Powering the 2020 Acura RLX Hybrid is a combination of a Gas Motor and an Electric Motor. The Gas Motor is the same 3.5L Naturally Aspirated V-6 Unit that could be found doing duty in the standard RLX Sedan. However, the Electric Powertrain consists of 3 Electric Motors (1 for the Front Wheels, 1 Each for each of the rear wheels) that add 67 horses and 68 lbs.-ft. Of torque to the standard Gas powered Motor to take the combined output to a respectable 377hp and 341 lbs.-ft. Of torque.

2020 ACURA RLX HYBRID ENGINE VIEW
2020 Acura RLX Hybrid Electric/3.5L Naturally Aspirated V-6 Engine

Acura has specifically tuned the AWD setup of the Acura and called it, the Super Handling-AWD for not just any reason. The AWD setup ranks as one of the best in the category and offers great handling on all conditions. Exclusive to the RLX Hybrid, is a 7 Speed Dual Clutch automatic transmission that complements the AWD setup pretty well. The Gear Ratios have been well matched to offer the best balance between initial torque and outright acceleration so that the drivers can squeeze out the max output from this hybrid powertrain.

When compared to the Volvo S90, one can clearly see that Volvo has a clear advantage in terms of numbers and as we will see later, Volvo makes use of this advantage quite well.

How fast is the Acura RLX Hybrid?

With over 370 horses on tap, the Acura takes less than 5 seconds to reach 60MPH. It demolishes the quarter-mile in a staggering 13.6 seconds as well. In the real world, the Motor accelerates from a Red Light to the city speed limits in no time and you will have no problems while overtaking other motorists on both the motorway and on the city.

The rivals of the RLX Hybrid, aren’t better than the same in terms of the performance they offer. While the Volvo has a lot of heft to carry behind it’s back, the turbocharged motor gives it a clear advantage and hence, is the fastest in the acceleration run.

What about the Ride and Handling of the Acura RLX Hybrid?

The RLX Hybrid is a luxury sedan, and luxury sedans usually favor ride quality over handling prowess. The RLX Hybrid has been always famed for the same fact and the 2020 RLX Hybrid, continues to offer the same characteristics. If you plan to use this car primarily for ferrying your family around, then this is the perfect tool for the job. The driver though won't love the car as much as the passengers. We would have loved a sportier suspension setup as the European rivals of the Acura, feel a bit sportier to ride.

2020 ACURA RLX HYBRID RIDE AND HANDLING
2020 Acura RLX Hybrid Side View

The handling isn't bad, but cornering abilities are certainly limited in this car. The weight, along with the soft suspension, gives this car a considerable amount of body roll. Cornering isn’t and won’t be a forte of the RLX Hybrid and the RLX Hybrid doesn’t boast of one as well. As said previously, a slightly sportier suspension would have been a welcome feature in the RLX Hybrid as the Germans feel a lot better to ride than the Acura on the corners.

What about the braking performance?

In terms of the braking performance, Acura has ensured that the Sport Hybrid has a better braking unit than the standard RLX. The brake discs have a substantial diameter, at 13” and 12.2” each for the front and rear tires respectively. Under a panic braking situation, the car holds up quite well and there is minimal nose-dive under panic and heavy braking. Braking distances of the Acura, may not be class-leading but they certainly aren’t the worst and will offer enough confidence to the driver in the real world.

The Modern-Day Volvo’s have been famed for their superb safety record and braking performances and the 2020 S90, perfectly demonstrates this fact. With just 110ft needed to stop from 60MPH, the Volvo truly outclasses some performance sedans and most of its rivals in the braking department.

2020 Acura RLX hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

One of the biggest USP’s and advantages that Hybrids have over their Gas-powered Counterparts is in the Fuel Efficiency department. The RLX Hybrid offers pretty decent MPG figures on both the Highway and the City. Talking of numbers, the RLX can traverse a minimum of 422 miles on the city and 437 miles on the highway, making it one of the most fuel efficient hybrid sedans in its category. Acura says that they have achieved these figures, courtesy of their supper efficient Hybrid Powertrain and the well-optimized DCT and AWD setup.

In terms of the MPG figures, the Volvo loses out against the Acura, when you take into comparison the individual figures. However, when you go for the range, the Volvo edges out the Acura by the smallest of margins, courtesy of its marginally higher Fuel Tank capacity.

2020 Acura RLX hybrid Sedan Interior

6.6/10

The RLX Hybrid is a proper luxury car on the inside, and its interiors are extremely premium. The space in the front seats is very generous, which is primarily due to the generous exterior dimensions. has a very comfortable and spacious interior. The seats are soft but supportive and feel more like a couch than a car seat. The rear seats are also quite spacious, with Mercedes rivaling space, although it isn't as great as the front space. Still, if you prefer a chauffeur-driven ride, this car makes a great choice, owing to its space and comfort. What also adds to all this, is the soft suspension tune that absorbs all the undulations and the speed humps that the Asphalt has to throw at the RLX Hybrid. While this may aid the RLX’s ride comfort, it also diminishes the RLX’s cornering abilities.

When comparing the Acura against the Volvo, you will find that the Volvo offers a higher amount of legroom and headroom for the rear passengers against the Volvo. The Acura may feel spacious on the front but on the whole, both these cars are equally matched in terms of the space and comfort that they offer.

Cargo Volume

At 12.0 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, the RLX Hybrid saloon doesn't have the largest trunk around. The seats don't fold down, which is disappointing, but there is still a lot of usable space in this car, enough for your daily family needs, such as carrying luggage. One of the deterring factors to the cargo capacity is the additional space occupied by the Electric Motors and the Battery pack.

2020 Acura RLX hybrid Sedan Exterior

The RLX Hybrid is a full-size sedan and thus has a strong road presence. Still, it isn't as tall as it is long, and if you look at it from a distance, you'd probably think its quite a subdued sedan. The wheelbase isn't too big either, which helps keep the turning circle in check. The weight is just under 2 tons, a lot for a sedan, and you feel the weight under cornering and braking.

In terms of the looks, Acura stands apart from the rest of the sedans available in the market. It's sleek character lines stretch throughout the entirety of the body and makes the Sedan feel aerodynamic and sporty.  The sleek design of the bumpers and cleverly positioned headlights, add to the appeal of this sedan and attracts attention, wherever you take it to.

2020 ACURA RLX HYBRID DESIGN
2020 Acura RLX Hybrid 3rd Quarter View

The 2020 Acura RLX Hybrid Sport is quite a distinct looking car, but to call it handsome would be a bit of a stretch. It doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good-looking car, as looks are extremely subjective. The front end of the car barely avoids a fashion disaster, with shapely headlamps and spiderweb style front grille. The rear tries hard to be sporty but isn't much.

The proportions are good though, and in the side profile, the car looks quite handsome. The dual-quad tailpipes are the sportiest design detail on this otherwise boring looking car. When compared to the Volvo however, you will feel that the Acura loses out to the Volvo and hence translates into the slightly lower amount of space on the inside.

Acura RLX Hybrid vs Volvo S90

The Volvo S90 is one of the most popular Sedans in the segment, owing to it’s low starting price, long list of creature comforts and unmatched safety proposition. Hell, it’s luxurious on the inside as well and efficient too. However, the Acura is a lot better built than the Volvo, is very well equipped and will stand the test of time far better than the Volvo. If you weren’t to be wooed by the Creature comforts on offer and would look for a well rounded package, we would strongly recommend the Acura over the Volvo.

2020 Acura RLX hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

Acura didn’t feel compelled to make changes to the 2020 RLX Hyrbid, over the 2019 version owing to the fact that the RLX Hybrid had already made a mark on the segment and stood out as one of the top hybrids in it’s class. For 2020, the RLX Hybrid packs all the traits for which, it was so popular among the masses. It still has the fantastic ride quality, super smooth drivetrain, long list of driver assistance features and creature comforts that can make any guy, go gaga inside the RLX. While the RLX misses out on some modern touches like Apple Car Play or Android Auto, you will not miss sit, considering Acura is packing plenty of nifty nerdy tech savvy features as standard. Add to all this, a fantastic track record for reliability and maintenance and you will still not feel bad, buying this Uber luxurious hybrid from Acura.
