A blend of a 272-hp 4-cylinder turbocharged motor and 10-speed automatic transmission enriches the 2021 Acura RDX with a significant grunt balanced by a pleasant fuel economy. Coming in at a base MSR of $38,200, the 2021 RDX has only received a marginal rise of close to $500 from the outgoing 2020 model. Apart from the addition of an all-new PMC edition, the new 2021 Acura RDX comes in just two trims (FWD and SH-AWD) and four different packages namely Standard, Technology, A-Spec, and Advance.
For the people who want an even more enticing and sporty option, the PMC trim is also on offer for a base MSRP close to $50,000. That being said, the 2021 Acura RDX is here to compete with the likes of Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, and BMW X3. Can it come out as the best of the mid-size luxury SUV segment in comparison to the fierce European rivals even with a lower brand value on offer from Acura? Let's find out in this in-depth review of the 2021 Acura RDX.

Overall Rating
"The 2021 Acura RDX proves you don't have to spend a ton of money to get a well-rounded small luxury SUV."-Edmunds
The Acura RDX has established itself as an SUV that is high on both luxury as well as performance. With the redesign that happened in the year 2019, the RDX remains a fresh and desirable car, and with a wide variety of options it offers, it is certainly a car for families. Even though there are not many updates carried over for the 2021 model year in comparison to the 2020 moniker, it still is a very modern offering that starts at an MSRP of $38,200 for the base trim and goes up to $50,000 for the limited-edition PMC version.
Acura's lineup is extensive but rather simple. The car is offered with four trim levels namely Base, Technology package, A-Spec package, and Advance package. The car is powered by a 2L turbocharged inline four-cylinder motor that is capable of producing 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. This is paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission and the standard drivetrain layout is front-wheel drive. You can have an all-wheel-drive configuration as well at an additional $2,000 in all trims. Even with subtle interior and exterior cosmetic updates, the 2021 Acura RDX only witnesses a minor $400 bump in price tag, in comparison to the 2020 model.

Final Verdict
Like all its other siblings, the 2021 Acura RDX can be equipped with 4 different packages. The 2021 Acura RDX can be stacked up with four packages, namely Standard, Technology, A-Spec, and Advance packages. The A-Spec package sounds like it might be a performance upgrade, but it is disappointingly a purely cosmetic package. Every RDX is equipped with an identical powertrain, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Along with these packages, the 2021 Acura RDX also comes with two different trims, namely FWD and SH-AWD.
The Base Standard trim comes equipped with several features like heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, a 10.2-inch display, and a 9-speaker/350-watt premium audio system. Front-wheel drive is standard, and SH all-wheel drive is a stand-alone option for $2,000 extra. The Technology package, which is priced at an MSRP of $41,100, is also decently packed with features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, navigation with real-time traffic updates, and a12-speaker ELS audio system. The most recognizable RDX models have the A-Spec package, retailing for an MSRP of $44,100, and comes with upgrades in the form of such as 20-inch wheels, red interior accents, heated/ventilated front seats, LED fog lights, and four more speakers for the ELS audio.

If you’ve got the budget, the RDX Advance Package is the trim to go for.
Much of the RDX's appeal ensues in its value. As such, we think the Technology Package is the direction to proceed. It adds niceties like genuine leather upholstery, as well as safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. You should also think of taking the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) trim which is retailed or an MSRP of $40,225. With the Technology package stacked up to the SH-AWD trim, you are looking at an MSRP of $43,100 and is a much more compelling option in comparison to other packages on offer due to the inclusion of many safety and cabin features.

"The torque-vectoring SH-AWD system also helped the RDX change directions quickly and was backed by precise-feeling steering."-Caranddriver
The sole engine offered with the 2021 Acura RDX is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder producing 272 hp at 6,500 RPM and a peak torque of 280 lb-ft. around 1,600 RPM, which is far better than all of the competitors. The turbocharged engine gives mighty potential at lower RPMs to get you off from stoplights promptly, and the transmission is skilled at selecting the right gear for every circumstance too.
The single transmission option on offer, the 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission drives the front wheels as standard. There is also an SH-AWD trim on offer, which offers a full-time AWD system for an additional $2,000. The 2021 Acura RDX is also dynamically excellent due to a well-tuned suspension setup and top-notch braking performance on offer.
The Acura RDX is the fastest amongst the competition when it comes to dashing from 0 to 60 MPH, while the Audi Q5 takes the second spot. The BMW X3 is two-tenths of a second slower than the rivals while the Volvo XC60 stands at last. We have expected this result looking at the power figures, hence the 0 to 60 MPH times just confirmed what we already knew. The Acura RDX has excellent performance - no two ways about it.

The brakes inspire confidence thanks to predicted action and a great feel. Still, the full stopping power is as reliable as ( or in some cases, better than) the competition. When you drive around turns, there's not much body roll either. You'll want SH-AWD to maximize the RDX's sporting potential as it helps the RDX power out of turns much more efficiently than what the front-wheel-drive variant can manage. The understeer is also well under control in the 2021 Acura RDX and we found the steering to be quite decent due to the sharpness this electrically assisted rack offers. However, it lacked the feel and feedback that we would have liked.
Mediocre fuel economy is a typical trait of large turbocharged crossover SUVs. However, the 2021 Acura RDX managed to return decent fuel-efficiency. With the front-wheel-drive trim, the 2021 Acura RDX is capable of doing 22 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and a combined 24 MPG.
The Full-Time All-Wheel-Drive models come in at 21/27/23 MPG, which is also quite decent for the segment. The A-Spec chops one MPG off of the highway figure due to its larger 20-inch wheels. The engine also has a stop/start feature to save a little fuel while idling. However, Acura recommends Premium Gasoline for the 2021 RDX.

The 2021 Acura RDX offers a combined fuel economy of 25 MPG which is pretty decent for a car of this size and category. Amidst ample attention to efficiency and daily driveability, all the vehicles in the race offer somewhat similar mpg figures, as expected. The BMW X3 puts out between 25 and 26 MPG combined, but all the other rivals like Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 offers close to 23 or 24 MPG combined.

"The RDX has a mix of friendly basic ergonomics and some rather different, if not polarizing, ideas for how things should be done." - Edmunds
Move inside the 2021 Acura RDX interiors, and you'll be surprised with the attention and fit-and-finish on offer. The all-black design that is available with all the trims and packages with contrastive stitching helps this mid-size SUV to stand out from the competition. As you go higher up the package levels like Advance and A-Spec packages, you will also be blessed with more enticing features like 16-speaker ELS Studio audio system, 10.5-inch heads-up display, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, Milano premium leather-trimmed interior, and many more. However, both the packages cost $44,100 and $46,000 in FWD trims, which makes them the most expensive packages of the lot. Opt for the AWD trim and you would see an increase of $2,000 to the price tag too.
The rear seats fold flat at the tug of a lever to grow cargo space from 29.5 cubic feet to 58.9 cubic feet. A nearly two cubic-foot storage bin is tucked out of the way under the cargo floor and gives a nifty storage option. The amount of head, shoulder, and legroom is great, and even tall passengers wouldn't have any problem in accommodating themselves inside. However, in comparison we found the 2021 Audi Q5 and the 2021 BMW X3 to be slightly more spacious than the RDX.

Every 2021 Acura RDX gets a 10.2-inch touchscreen as standard that's placed high on the dashboard, operated through the Acura's True Touchpad Interface, which is a well-received addition. The important infotainment features like Apple CarPlay & Android Auto are standard as well. The Advance Package of the 2021 Acura RDX also gets a 10.5" Head-Up Display, which adds to the luxury. The infotainment system should engage with the tech-savvy buyer, just as the audio system will urge the dedicated audiophile. Standard features include Siri Eyes Free, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, a nine-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and the AcuraLink telematics system. The audio experience showcased by the coveted 12-speaker ELS audio system is truly one of the best we have seen from the segment too.

"Muscular and handsome, the Acura RDX stands out among crossovers." - thecarconnection.com
The 2021 Acura RDX redesign is not shabby anymore, unlike some of the yesteryear iterations. The redesign in 2019 gave this crossover SUV some aggressive lines, helping it to turn the heads for a second glance. Acura advances the 2021 RDX styling by using the simple shapes and edges of its other SUV, the MDX, and clothing them tautly around a structure that appears to be sleeker, curvier, and more attractive. All the trims and packages also offer features like LED headlights with integrated DRLs along with LED taillights. However, the A-Spec package which is priced at $44,100 for the FWD and $46,100 for the AWD trim, comes with A-Spec front and rear bumpers and LED foglights. The PMC package of the 2021 RDX gets a redesigned 20-inch alloy wheels and black chrome and gloss black exterior accents. This package is priced close to $50,000.
The lower package levels like the Standard and Technology packages, which comes at an MSRP of $38,200 and $41,100, get the 19-inch alloy wheels as standard. However, the higher packages like A-Spec and Advance packages get the 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in a wider 255 section tires. These trims are priced at $44,100 and $46,000, respectively. There are also eight exterior colors on offer with the 2021 Acura RDX. However, the Technology package receives two more interior colors to the palette. Furthermore, the PMC trim, which is priced at $51,000, comes in a single Ebony Black colored interior and Thermal Orange Pearl exterior color.

The RDX is easily one of the better-looking cars in the market and attracts quite many eyes as it drives past. With the best-in-class length of 188.1-inches coupled with an impressive height and width of 65.7-inches and 74.8-inches, the 2021 Acura RDX looks quite imposing on the road. Even with such a huge dimension, the 2021 Acura RDX is still the lightest SUV of the segment, coming in at just 3,826 lbs in comparison to the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and the Volvo XC60, all of which comes at 4,040 lbs, 4,034 lbs, and 4,109 lbs.
Some of the exterior features of the 2021 Acura RDX are:
Check out how the 2021 Acura RDX looks in comparison to the updated 2021 model
Is the 2021 Acura RDX safe? Click here for the detailed safety review.
The 2021 Acura RDX received an overall crash safety rating of 5 stars from NHTSA, which is the highest rating awarded by the coveted organization on crash safety. The Insurance Institute awarded the 2020 RDX Top Safety Pick+ for Highway Safety. However, the 2021 moniker hasn't been crash-tested by the IIHS yet. Acura's suite of driver aids is standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking.
Along with the excellent scores garnered by the RDX coupled with an impressive list of advanced active and passive safety features on offer, this Japanese crossover SUV also comes with exceptional built quality due to the construction happening primarily in high-tensile steel and aluminum. Every panel of the 2021 Acura RDX feels quite rigid and could easily withstand the impact without transmitting the force to the cabin.
The 2021 Audi Q5 ticks most of the boxes for a premium luxury SUV. It gets decent interior space, a powerful motor mated to a smooth-shifting transmission, and all the bells and whistles you could think of from a car of this segment. However, in comparison to the 2021 Acura RDX, we found that the RDX offers all these for a lower base MSRP of $38,200, making it more compelling than the Q5, which is retailed at $43,300. We also found that the RDX offers more standard interior and safety features too. Acura will also be more reliable in the long run.
Even though the 2021 BMW X3 is a bit more fun to drive in comparison to the 2021 Acura RDX, the latter is not bad either. The RDX managed to redeem itself as a better all-rounder of the luxury SUV segment due to its punchy motor, well-balanced suspension setup, and sharp brakes. The RDX is also cheaper than the X3 by close to $5,000, which further drives up the value of the RDX. Nevertheless, the 2021 BMW X3 turned out to be slightly more fuel efficient in comparison to the RDX.
The Volvo XC60 is one of the more compelling options in the crossover luxury SUV segment due to its impressive safety tech on offer coupled with elegant interior and torquey powertrain. However, the 2021 Acura RDX managed to do all the things that the XC60 does and a bit more too. The RDX will be more reliable and dependable in the long run as well. It is also cheaper than the XC60, undercutting the latter by close to $2,000, and will come with a more impressive motor under the hood too.
The 2021 Acura RDX has hit showrooms during October 2020 and has garnered quite an impressive initial bookings too. Luxury SUVs are deemed to be well-built and stuffed with features. RDX is a fun to drive SUV! Has amazing body control and there is little to no roll on corners. Handling is pretty amazing too. Acceleration is decent and could have been better especially when you consider this is an Acura!
