Over the years, the NHTSA has been known for its comprehensive and independent analysis of cars, based on crash tests and various other parameters. In an independent analysis, the NHTSA awarded a full five-star safety rating to the Acura MDX, making it one of the best performing crossovers in its segment. Further, the car received a roll-over rating of four stars with a perceived rollover risk of just 16.4%, making it one of the safest cars on sale today.

The current generation of the MDX dates back to the year 2014. In its almost half a decade life cycle, Acura has given the MDX some cosmetic and safety-related aids every alternate year. Thanks to these updates, the MDX remains one of the best selling three-row luxury crossovers. What works further in MDX’s favor is the strong brand equity provided by Acura. The Japanese marque remains the top pick for those who prioritize safety and reliability over gizmos and technology.

Being in a luxury segment and competing with the likes of Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX 350, Acura has given the MDX plenty of standard safety features to ensure it remains in contention. Just like other Acura cars, even the MDX uses a modular chassis, which is stiff and rigid making MDX one of the safest cars in its class.

How safe is Acura MDX?

The AcuraWatch package has been made standard in the base trim. Standard safety features include:

  • LED Headlights
  • Auto-dimming Rearview Mirror
  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane and Road Departure Warning and Mitigation
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Multi Rear-view Camera with Dynamic Guidelines
  • Lane Keeping Assist System
  • Integrated Dynamics System with Agile Handling Assist
  • Advanced Engineering Compatability (ACE) Body Structure

Opting for the Technology Package adds the following niceties:

  • Automatic Wipers
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front and Parking Sensors

With the A-Spec trim, you only get some exterior and interior enhancements, and in terms of safety features, it is exactly similar to the Technology Package.

With the Advance Package, you get a host of additional safety goodies:

  • LED Fog Lights
  • Top-Down Surround View Camera system
  • Head-Up Warning
  • Active Damper System

Apart from all these you also get Front, Side-Impact and Curtain Airbags, Driver's Knee airbag, LED Daytime Running Lights, Anti-Lock Brakes, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Theft Protection System with Electronic Immobilizer and LATCH anchors as standard. One can say that 2020 Acura MDX is packed with enough safety features and built as safe as a fortress on wheels.

Standout Safety Features

The MDX SUV is loaded to the gills with driver-assistance, and the following standout active-safety features ensure you get a sense of utmost safety while driving this car around, with your family or friends or even when driving solo:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System(CBMS):- The system consists of a front-facing camera a radar transmitter that continuously monitors the distance with the vehicle in the front. If the system detects a potential imminent collision, it warns the driver to apply brakes immediately. The system begins light braking on its own if the driver doesn't take any action. If the system determines that the collision cannot be avoided, it initiates automatic hard emergency braking. The system assists in preventing or reducing the severity of the crash but the sole responsibility lies with the driver.

  • Lane Keeping Assist System(LKAS):- It warns the driver if the car is drifting away from the lane without using indicators/turn signals. The LKAS will gently nudge the car back into the center of the lane if the appropriate action isn’t taken. However, the driver is still in control as the system will not take over the steering wheel.

  • Blind-Spot Information System:-  It alerts the driver through warning signs on the side mirror. Warning beeps are also sounded if there is any vehicle in the blind spot of the driver's vision when the driver tries to change lanes.

  • Road Departure Mitigation System:- The system alerts the driver with a warning message on the Multi-Information Display and also tightens the seat belt when it detects that the vehicle is drifting off the road. The system then uses the active steering function of the LKAS and the vehicle’s autonomous braking capability to guide the MDX back into the original lane.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC):- Adaptive Cruise Control makes your everyday commuting a breeze. All you have to do is to set your vehicle speed and the interval between your car and the vehicle ahead, the ACC system takes care of the rest by automatically modulating the throttle and the brakes as required. It also comes with low speed follow that helps you in light traffic conditions.

  • Surround-View Camera System:- The car is equipped with multiple cameras and sensors whose video feeds and proximity data are merged to provide the driver with a top-down surround view of the vehicle that particularly helps in parking.

Is Acura MDX safe enough?

Yes, MDX is built rock solid and loaded with plenty of safety features to go along with the current generation of buyers' mindset and demand. To add sweetness to your ride, the company decided to offer most of its safety features as standard. That is MDX for you! You absolutely cannot go wrong with this one. Safe. Solid. Stylish!

The seats are at pretty high level, it helps to easily see the road while driving by providing a confident view. Also the added equipments like Blind Spot Information System, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Parking Sensors for both front and rear makes it very driver friendly too. Also it is a 5 star safety rated vehicle which provide me complete piece of mind everytime i drive.

Best looking performance SUV.

Pros - Handling, driver seat adjusted to multi-level, pricing

Cons - Confusion two infotainment screens.

Safety Review

6 /10 Safety Rating

While driving two screens of infotainment systems is quiet distracting and confusing on a lot of occasions for changing settings. It sometimes make me take my eye vision from road to digital display which is really unsafe. Apart from that all is designed well and placed within reach of the driver in terms of all buttons and gimmic controls.

So much fun on the drive!!

Took the 2020 Acura MDX up north for some end of winter season fun and driving was a breeze. The powerful 3.6l V6 engine is a charm to drive on high revs and has enough low end torque to get this big suv going. This is the Front wheel drive version but you barely notices the need of Rear wheel or all wheel drive system. I dont take it to any off road conditions so no need of AWD system.

Best looking performance SUV.

It drives smoothly and turns well. It? comfortable and sometimes I feel like I? gliding on the road instead of driving. The handling is also very good on curves and highways.

MDX is the best car for the snow, hands down.

Driving department and comfort is always taken care by Acura and same goes on for the MDX. The MPG figures are on the lower side all thanks to the beafy V6 engine. you will enjoy this car on the long drives with your group of friends, it is comfortable as well as equipped with a lot of gimmicks to keep everyone entertained on the go.

Premium SUV.

With the A spec package which adds 20 inch wheels and tyre combo, the driving and handling improves a lot when compared to the 18 inch wheel option vehicle. The super handling AWD is a charm to drive with.
