First introduced in 2014 and currently, in its 3rd Gen iteration, Acura has introduced its bestselling SUV, the MDX, with some subtle changes for 2020. While remaining mostly unchanged performance-wise from 2019, only the A-Spec trim of 2020 Acura MDX gets some styling tweaks on both the inside and outside. You do get the practicality aspect with MDX as you can seat five people with ease on the inside and still manage to get superb MPG figures, out of the same.

Speaking of the rivals of the MDX, SUVs like the Cadillac XT5, Lexus RX 350 and the Buick Enclave take a direct shot at the MDX. However, Buick and Acura can seat seven while the rest can seat only five.

Five Trims are being offered by Acura for 2020 MDX that includes Standard, Technology, A-Spec, Advance, and Entertainment Packages. Engine and Transmission options remain the same from last year and Acura hasn’t fiddled with the same.

Prices for the 2020 Acura MDX range from $44,000 to over $60,000, depending on the trim and options chosen. You do have the option of choosing between the FWD and Super Handling-AWD versions in all the trims, except in the A-Spec and the Entertainment Packages.

2020 Acura MDX SUV Features

7.6/10

The 2020 Acura MDX offers a seating capacity for seven. The vehicle offered in five trim levels (also termed as packages): Standard, Technology, A-Spec, Advance, and Entertainment Package. The A-Spec package stands apart from the rest of the lineup, owing to its styling both on the inside and outside as well as some exclusive features.

While the trims are differentiated on the basis of comfort and safety features included in MDX, with each trim being a step up from the previous one in terms of luxury. The fact to be emphasized here is that these trims are identical to each other in terms of the engine specifications. All the trims of the Acura MDX house a 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 engine, belting out 290 ponies and 267 lb-ft of spinning force.

We Recommend

Unless you want to be chauffeur driven and also want your MDX's rear-seats to be furnished with a plethora of creature comforts, the "Standard" trim will do justice for most of the people.

2020 Acura MDX SUV Engine and Performance

6.1/10

Powering the 2020 Acura MDX is a 3.5 Liter naturally aspirated V6 delivering 290 hp at 6200 rpm and 267 pounds-feet of torque at 4700 rpm. The SUV delivers power in a smooth and noise-free fashion under normal driving conditions. However, when the need for spirited driving comes up, the motor does provide enough grunt on the move to cater fully to those demands and satisfy the aficionado within you.

2020 Acura MDX comes with 3.5L engine

A 9 Speed Automatic Unit is standard across the range of the 2020 Acura MDX. In terms of responsiveness, this unit isn't the quickest of the lot and feels a bit slow to respond, when on the move. We would have liked the option of Dual Clutch Transmission that is on offer in the Hybrid version of the MDX as it feels way better to drive than the standard 9-speed unit, and as a combined effect, the performance on offer in the Acura MDX Hybrid feels much more refined than the gasoline-only MDX.

From the above table, one can clearly see that Acura offers the least power among its rivals because it maxes out at 6200 rpm. This helps the company to position its vehicles to be more eco-friendly. But the torque curve is tuned to offer max torque at 4700rpm as compared to XT5 which produces peak torque at 5000rpm. Both the Cadillac XT5 and the Buick Encore come with bigger engines but no significant power change can be observed. The Lexus RX350 lags behind the Cadillac in terms of power but manages to fare better than the Acura as it redlines at a 100rpm higher than the former.

How good is the acceleration of the MDX?

Acceleration from the Naturally Aspirated V6 Motor of the 2020 Acura MDX is brisk and linear for the most part. You do have enough power on tap for overtakes in and around the city. However, you do need to wait a bit for the power to kick in, while on the highway to perform an overtaking maneuver.

2020 Acura MDX hits 0-60 in just 6.5 sec

The power delivery in the Acura MDX is nice and linear but feels a bit flat on low-revs. Furthermore, the clunky 9-speed automatic transmission is slow to respond and acts as an added hindrance in this car's way of exhibiting a handsome sprinting performance.

The rivals of the Acura are at par with it, as far as the quarter-mile drag goes. This is because they all have almost similar engine configurations and relatively closer power figures. However, on the 0-60 MPH corridor, MDX smokes the competition thanks to its lower curb weight and better aerodynamics.

What about the braking performance and handling of the MDX?

Speaking of braking, the MDX is at par with its other rivals in terms of brake feel and modulation. It stops from 60MPH to a complete halt at a short distance of 116 feet. Being the lightest of the lot, XT5 stops at an amazing 111 feet distance. The brake pedals feel light in the application and so does the impact. Step hard on those brakes and you will feel the progression in them that is followed by an increase in the bite.

2020 Acura MDX has 12.6" front rotor and 13" rear rotor size

The torque-vectoring AWD system is quite impressive. It reduces under-steer and allows this big SUV to move around corners when you really push it. In most situations, the MDX lacks sportiness, but it sure does well on the handling part. The All-Wheel-Drive is designed for better terrain exploration, which is hard to find in a luxury-oriented SUV of this class. However, it lacks hill descent control though.

What about the towing capacity of the MDX?

With a towing capacity of 3500lbs, Acura has ensured that you won't have much trouble, ferrying around heavy stuff with you on your way to your weekend getaway. The engine doesn't feel stressed while towing that weight and the Super Handling AWD setup, allows good traction while having a trailer hitched to the MDX's back. Surpassing Acura, Buick can tow a maximum of 5000lbs when its V6 is equipped with a trailering package. However, it is only available in Essence and higher trim configuration.

2020 Acura MDX SUV Fuel Economy

4.2/10

The Acura MDX manages to be both frugal and decent on performance at the same time. The Standard FWD version of the Acura manages to deliver a combined MPG figure of 23 and returns 20MPG and 27MPG on the city and highway respectively. Switching to the AWD versions will make the MPG figures, go down by 1MPG each and thus reducing the overall driving range by a very small margin. The A-Spec package reduces the MPG figures on the Highway by another 1 MPG, thereby making the overall figures stand at 21MPG as opposed to the 22MPG in the AWD version.

Speaking of the rivals of the Acura, all of them are at par with the MDX when it comes to the fuel tank capacity and overall MPG figures. The Acura and the Lexus are at par with each other and stay at the top, in terms of the fuel economy.

2020 Acura MDX SUV Interior

The MDX is spacious for the midsize luxury segment, and though its third row is compact, it's more usable than most of the cars in this league. Clever single-press buttons slide the 2nd-row seats for third-row access, but the resulting pass-through for adults can be inaccessible. The third row is somewhat meant for kids and perhaps adults of short heights. Otherwise, there's good access to the front- and second-row seats in comparison to others in the segment.

2020 Acura MDX seating layout

A highly adjustable driver's seat and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column are available as standard on all MDX models, so you will be able to find a comfortable position across the cabin. The front seats are spacious in every dimension, but the headroom in the second row is limited.

Looking at the other spectrum of SUVs in the segment, the Caddy and the Lexus are the only 2 SUVs in this comparison that allows seating for just 5 passengers. Buick and Acura have a clear advantage in this aspect, as they allow seating for 7. The Buick offers the most space for passengers on the inside and is then followed by the Lexus. The Acura doesn't fall behind by a big margin against these and offers a respectable amount of space for all the passengers.

Creature comforts on offer?

Acura has always heard the people in terms of what they wanted and hence, they have added plenty of features on the inside of MDX. The Interiors may not feel as premium as some of the German rivals of the MDX but with the kind of features on offer, you sure won't be left complaining about the same.

  • Leather-Trimmed Interiors
  • Front 12 Way Power Adjust Seats with Power Lumbar Support
  • Heated and Ventilated Front Seats
  • Heated Rear Outboard Seats

How is the Infotainment System like in MDX?

While we have praised the SUV till now, we surely can't say the same about the Infotainment system of the MDX. While Acura is bundling a lot of features in the infotainment system, we sure feel that the integration of the same could have been a lot better. In terms of the looks, the interface feels weak and is slow to respond to user inputs. The design of the system feels slightly outdated when compared to its rivals. However, we do like the positioning of the buttons to control the infotainment system which has been very well placed, for easy access to the driver and the passenger

The infotainment features of MDX include:

  • Voice Recognition/Siri with Bluetooth hands-free
  • 10 Speaker ELS Audio System
  • USB Charging Ports and Media Connectivity ports
  • SiriusXM/HD Radio with Bluetooth and AUX connectivity
  • 8" Touchscreen Infotainment System with Navigation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

How much cargo can Acura MDX SUV hold?

The Acura MDX comes with a three-row seating configuration and that tends to eat up a lot of the cargo space. The MDX offers a cargo volume of 15 cubic feet, which is very less in comparison to all of its rivals. However, look from the perspective of a three row SUV and you will find that this will be enough for most of your weekend getaways or daily errands.

2020 Acura MDX cargo space

The Cadillac XT5 capitalizes on its 5 seat configuration by offering the most cargo space in the comparison. The Buick comes in second in this respect and is followed by the Lexus, that despite being a 5 seater, offers a paltry 18.4 cubic feet of space.

While the cargo figures of the Acura MDX may seem meek in front of the 5-seater competitors, the emphasis here should be laid on the fact that the Cadillac XT5 and the Lexus RX350 offers 30 and 23.4 cubic feet of space with just two seating rows in place. Speaking of the cargo volume, fold down the third-row seats and there is more than 43 cubic feet of space meant for stowing your luggage.

The 2020 Acura MDX enjoys a great amalgamation of elegant yet tough, luxurious yet practical looks. As with other cars from Acura, this flagship SUV has got an attractive diamond-pentagon grille, and the Jewel Eye LED headlights are just awesome. Roof rails add more glamour to MDX's personality and provide practicality as well. The hybrid version of MDX looks similar to the standard version.

Talking of Acura's dimensions, you will find it somewhere in between the Buick Enclave and the Lexus RX. That means you have enough space for passengers on the inside of MDX while having the ease of maneuverability, courtesy of a relatively smaller footprint on the outside. We do however feel that Acura could have added a bit more ground clearance to the MDX, to add to it's SUV character.

Note-worthy Exterior features?

Being a flagship offering from the luxury-oriented Japanese carmaker, the 2020 Acura MDX reeks of a plethora of classy features that will surely make you grab one. Some of the few highlights include

  • Jewel Eye Headlights with Auto On/Off Function
  • 20" Alloy Wheels
  • Powered Moon Roof
  • Remote Linked Power Operated Tail Gate
  • Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers
  • LED Puddle Lights, Fog Lights, Taillights and Puddle Lights
  • Auto-Dimming, Heated and Powered ORVM's with Integrated LED Turn Signals
  • Roof Rails

2020 Acura MDX SUV Competition

8.0/10

Acura MDX vs Cadillac XT5

The Cadillac XT5 offers everything, that an American expects from it. It's spacious on the inside, is fabulous to look at and offers ton loads of features on the inside. However, the Cadillac offers seating for only 5 people and isn't exactly as well build as Acura. The Cadillac feels luxurious on the inside but a close observation of the same and you will find inconsistencies, all around the cabin. Acura offers tremendous value in terms of daily driving abilities and fetches a far better resale value than the Caddy as well. If features are what you are all about, the Caddy XT5 will suit your bill well but if you want to go for a sensible package, then you should opt for the Acura.

Acura MDX vs Buick Enclave

Between the two of them, Buick offers almost similar features at a lower sticker price. In addition to that, Enclave has better reliability, superb aftersales service and also provides one-year complimentary scheduled maintenance. Moreover, it is brewed at home making it an irresistible buy. We recommend you to buy the Enclave if fuel economy is not an issue for you, otherwise, take the MDX home.

Acura MDX vs Lexus RX 350

The Lexus RX 350 is the closest to the Acura MDX in terms of dynamics, looks, and design. There isn't much differentiation among the 2 in terms of pricing and performance too. However, while the Lexus seats only 5 people, the Acura boasts of seating for seven. Lexus feels a tad more premium on the inside and is sure to turn heads with its looks. You can't go wrong while choosing one of these 2 SUV's but if you have a higher focus on practicality, Acura would be the best choice for you then.

2020 Acura MDX SUV Final Verdict

7.3/10

The 2020 Acura MDX, aims to be the jack of all trades and Master of None and it sure comes close to achieving that. The MDX offers a superb ride, feels planted at motorway speeds, returns amazing MPG figures and can seat 7 people at ease. While the interiors of MDX may not feel as premium as opposed to what the competition offers, they are surely built well and will stand the test of time, as opposed to Acura's rivals. If you plan on regular commutes with your family and friends and want a cozy drive, without the hassle of going to the gas station frequently, then the 2020 Acura MDX SUV will fit all those bills for you.

So much fun on the drive!!

Pros - Smartphone connectivity, comfortable and spacious interior.

Cons - Transmission Still Has Room for Improvement

7 /10 Overall Rating

Took the 2020 Acura MDX up north for some end of winter season fun and driving was a breeze. The powerful 3.6l V6 engine is a charm to drive on high revs and has enough low end torque to get this big suv going. This is the Front wheel drive version but you barely notices the need of Rear wheel or all wheel drive system. I dont take it to any off road conditions so no need of AWD system.

It drives smoothly and turns well. It? comfortable and sometimes I feel like I? gliding on the road instead of driving. The handling is also very good on curves and highways.

MDX is the best car for the snow, hands down.

Driving department and comfort is always taken care by Acura and same goes on for the MDX. The MPG figures are on the lower side all thanks to the beafy V6 engine. you will enjoy this car on the long drives with your group of friends, it is comfortable as well as equipped with a lot of gimmicks to keep everyone entertained on the go.

Premium SUV.

With the A spec package which adds 20 inch wheels and tyre combo, the driving and handling improves a lot when compared to the 18 inch wheel option vehicle. The super handling AWD is a charm to drive with.
