MDX - Multi Dimensional Luxury. The alphanumeric moniker stands true to the 2020 Acura MDX’s character. It was one of the first Crossover Luxury SUVs to feature third-row seating. Over the years a lot has changed! The now new MDX Hybrid is based on Acura’s new design language called “Acura Precision Concept” to meet fast-changing consumer tastes and preferences.

Under the hood, it also features a three-motor hybrid drivetrain setup imbibed from the supercar Acura NSX to improve acceleration, fuel economy and add more traction to help in those tight corners. Facing stiff competition from Range Rover Sport Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX Hybrid in the crossover SUV hybrid segment, Will Acura MDX Hybrid be able to prove its worth again? Read the performance review to find out!

What powers the MDX Hybrid?

Under the hood, the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid shares the same engine with the original MDX. Powered by a robust 3.0L naturally aspirated V6 engine which produces a power output of 257hp at higher revs of 6300 rpm with a peak torque of 218 lb-ft at revs of 5000rpm. As a perk of its gene redesign, an electric powertrain, based on the NSX is attached to complement the gasoline-powered engine. A three-motor setup with one 47hp motor on the front and twin rear motors rated at 72hp adds to the muscle and efficiency of this luxury crossover.

Front Motor produces a peak torque 109lb-ft. While the rear motors produce a peak torque of 108lb-ft. A lithium-ion battery pack provides juice to power these electric motors. The combined system output power is 321hp and the combined torque output is 289lb-ft. To add sweetness to the ride, the company threw in a motor integrated seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission for quicker gear shifts and a drive-by-wire throttle for precision and responsive acceleration.

From the above table, you can observe that Range Rover Sport P360 MHEV walks tall with its powerful engine thanks to its electric supercharger supplementing the twin-scroll turbocharger that helped it oust the competition. However, it will burn a hole in your pocket with its near 70grand price tag. The Toyota and Lexus hybrid variants, even with its more potent 3.5L V6 engine and the rear electric motor couldn’t match the prowess of the Acura MDX Hybrid. While Range Rover has the numbers required for the win, you can’t really ignore the great value proposition of the MDX Hybrid.

How quick is it from 0-60MPH?

Straight of the line in the 0-60MPH corridor, the MDX Hybrid loses to the Range Rover by 0.1 seconds. Much credit goes to the tri-electric motor setup that the MDX Hybrid has acquired from the NSX & its lightweight for finishing so close to the all-powerful Range Rover Sport Hybrid. Unfortunately, data on MDX Hybrid’s top speed is not currently available at the moment.

2020 Acura MDX Hybrid SUV hits 0-60 mph just In 6.3 sec.

Range Rover’s impressive performance is due to its twin-scroll turbocharger and the electric supercharger which makes the turbo lag almost negligible. Lexus and Toyota, on the other hand, don’t boast impressive acceleration figures. But their CVT transmission helps them to stay on the correct gear ratio at any given time thus reducing emissions and improving fuel economy.

How is the ride and handling?

Acura has upped its game on the handling front with its Precision Concept Design Language. Its electric powertrain setup helps it conquer those tight corners with ease. It also comes with a Vehicle Stability Assist system that adjusts the engine’s torque and applies brakes to help stabilize the vehicle. AWD models use SH-AWD to redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability. The Active Damper system soaks up all road bumps and can quickly stiffen up at the press of a button to provide more agile handling. The interiors are very well insulated from ambient with acoustic windshield and windows.

How is the braking performance?

The braking system on the MDX Hybrid is the standard ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Pressure Distribution and Brake Assist. With Collision Mitigation Braking System being offered as a standard safety feature, the onboard computer can direct the braking system to use up to 80% of its braking power to prevent or reduce damage from an imminent collision.

Acura MDX Hybrid has a stunning brake performance with a stopping distance of 121 feet even with its moderately sized brake rotors. The Range Rover even its biggest brake rotors surges 3 feet ahead before coming to a standstill. You could blame its heavyweight for that. Acura’s other rivals also post comparable brake performance figures.

Conclusion

Acura MDX Hybrid is not only just where Posh meets Practical, but it is also where Performance meets Practical. It bundles utility and comfort into a single package. Although it lacks some features such as Hill Descent Control, for a large three-row Luxury SUV, it does perform decently for its class.

Ever wondered what it would be like if we could fuse all the quality strands of automobile and keep the unwanted ones or is it just me.
