Gone are the days when Sedans used to reign the sales chart. Crossovers and SUVs are the new trends among the masses and manufacturers are wasting little time, in bringing out the 2020 versions of the same. The MDX Sport Hybrid is one of the most popular Hybrids in its category and Acura has been quick, in releasing the 2020 iteration of the same, owing to the same fact. Acura hasn’t fiddled with the MDX Hybrid and has done no significant changes to the 2020 version in lieu of not jeopardizing the sales.

Overall Rating

For 2020, the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD comes with just the Technology and Advance Packages. Engine and Transmission options remain the same from last year and that means, you have a healthy 321 horses on tap. Prices for the MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD hovers between $53,895 and $60,645, excluding destination charges and other options that you can add in the same. Unlike the Standard MDX, you do get a 7 Speed Dual Clutch Transmission as standard in the MDX Hybrid in the transmission department.

Speaking of the rivals of the MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, SUVs like the Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 SE Hybrid, Lexus RX 450hL, and the Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum Hybrid takes a direct shot at the MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.

2020 Acura MDX hybrid Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid gets its Gas Powerplant from the standard MDX but it also comes paired to the Legendary NSX's Hybrid power plant, hence giving the MDX, its Hybrid pedigree. The Aluminum Alloy based 24-Valve SOHC V6 with i-VTEC generates 257hp @ 6300rpm and 218 lbs.-ft. Of Torque @ 5000 rpm. The Electric Powertrain consists of 3 Motors with 1 Motor driving the front wheels and 2 Motors for the rear wheels. The Front Motor outputs are rated at 47hp and 109lbs.-ft. Of torque. The Twin Rear Motors generate a combined output of 72hp and 108lbs.-ft. Of torque. The combined output of all these motors stands at a healthy 321hp and 289lbs.ft. Of torque.

Speaking of rivals, it's the mighty expensive Range Rover PHEV that packs in the most horses and torque in the category. The Acura comes in second in this respect and falls by a very small margin. Lexus and Toyota are at par with each other, with the Lexus edging out the former in the torque department.

How quick is the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid?

For a vehicle as big as the MDX, one shouldn't be expecting a lot from it. However, the MDX manages to prove ost people wrong with its acceleration performance. Acceleration from the Naturally Aspirated V6 Motor of the 2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is brisk and linear for the most part.

2020 ACURA MDX HYBRID ACCELERATION

You do have enough power on tap for overtakes in and around the city. However, you do need to wait a bit for the power to kick in, while on the highway to perform an overtaking maneuver.

Speaking of comparison with the rivals, the Acura comes in as the best of the lot in the dash to 60MPH and Quarter Mile figures. The Range Rover comes in second in this respect followed by the Toyota and the Lexus respectively.

How good is the braking and handling of the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid?

Acura has concentrated a lot on the dynamics of the MDX Hybrid and the results show the same. The Acura showcases the best braking performance when compared to its adversaries. The Brake Pedals feel light on application and so does the impact. Step hard on the brakes and you will feel the progression in them that is followed by an increase in the bite.

The torque-vectoring AWD system is quite impressive. It reduces under-steer and allows this big SUV to move around corners when you really push it. In most situations, the MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD lacks the sportiness like a regular sporty SUV, but it sure works on the handling part. The All-Wheel-Drive is designed for better terrain exploration, which is hard to find in a luxury-oriented SUV of this class. It lacks hill descent control though and we would have loved this addition as well.

How much weight can you tow with the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid?

Despite being a Hybrid, the 2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid, manages to ferry along with it, a maximum of 5000lbs of load attached to it. What is even impressive, is the way Acura engineers have polished the AWD system of theirs to ensure minimum loss of grip and control while having such heavy loads hitched to the back of the MDX hybrid.

2020 Acura MDX hybrid Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is one of the best performing SUV's in the segment but that comes at a cost. The MDX Hybrid manages to fall short of its rivals in terms of the MPG figures but manages to make up for it with it's massive 19.4 gallon fuel tank that allows for a minimum driving range of 500 miles.

2020 Acura MDX hybrid Interior

7.5/10

The MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is spacious for the midsize luxury segment, and though its third row is compact, it's more usable than most of the cars in this league. Clever single-press buttons slide the 2nd-row seats for third-row access, but the resulting pass-through for adults can be inaccessible. Otherwise, there's good access to the front- and second-row seats in comparison to others in the segment.

2020 ACURA MDX HYBRID SEATING AND COMFORT
2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid Rear Seats

A highly adjustable driver's seat and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column are available as standard on all MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD models, so you will be able to find a comfortable position across the cabin. The third row is somewhat meant for kids and perhaps adults of short heights. Still, it's good than the third rows of some other luxury SUVs in the segment. The front seats are spacious in every dimension, but the headroom in the second row is limited.

Speaking of what the rivals offer and you will find the Lexus and the Toyota, edging out the Acura in terms of numbers. However, in the real world, it's hard to differentiate between them. The MDX shines in the second row, courtesy of clever engineering from the designers at Acura that ensures generous levels of space for passengers occupying those seats.

What are the creature comforts on offer?

Yes and in plenty. Acura has always been known for offering a plethora of features on the inside and the 2020 MDX Hybrid, is no different either. Step inside the MDX and you will be amazed by the variety of features on offer. Here is a list of few of those drool-worthy features

  • Leather-Trimmed Interiors
  • Front 12 Way Power Adjust Seats with Power Lumbar Support
  • Heated and Ventilated Front Seats
  • Heated Rear Outboard Seats
  • 40/40 Split-folding second-row seats
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control with Humidity Control and GPS Linking
  • Keyless Access with Push Button Start
  • Auto-Dimming Frameless Rearview Mirror
  • Power Windows with Auto-Up/Down, Auto Reverse and Key-Off operation
  • Heated and Leather Wrapped Electronic Tilt/Telescopic Adjust steering wheel
  • Ambient Cabin Lighting and Active Sound Control

How good is the Infotainment system?

While we really like what Acura has done to the Interiors of the MDX Hybrid, sadly though, we don't have the same opinion for the infotainment system. Acura has bundled all the modern apps and services that one expects from a car in 2020 but the manner in which they have integrated all of this certainly needs some re-work. The interface feels laggy and slow to respond and pairing devices is a bit of a task as well. The layout feels a bit dated but we do like the buttons that have been thoughtfully placed, for easier access to both the driver and the co-passenger.

INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM

  • Voice Recognition/Siri with Bluetooth hands-free
  • 11 Speaker ELS Audio System
  • USB Charging Ports and Media Connectivity ports
  • SiriusXM/HD Radio with Bluetooth and AUX connectivity
  • 8" Touchscreen Infotainment System with Navigation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

What about the Cargo carrying capacity then?

The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD comes with a three-row seating configuration and that tends to eat up a lot of the cargo space when you compare the Acura to its rivals. The MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD offers a cargo volume of 15 cubic feet, which is very less in comparison to all of its rivals.

2020 ACURA MDX HYBRID CARGO VOLUME
The MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD offers a cargo volume of 15 cubic feet

However, look from the perspective of a 3 row SUV and you will find that this will be enough for most of your weekend getaways or daily errands and won't leave much to complain about.

The Range Rover Sport PHEV manages to take the best advantage of its 5 Seater configuration by offering the most space on the cargo front. Talking of the Lexus' dimensions, you will find it somewhere in between the Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum Hybrid and the Lexus RX. That means, you do have enough space for passengers on the inside while having the ease of maneuverability, courtesy of a relatively smaller foot print on the outside. We do however feel that Acura could have added a bit more ground clearance to the MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, to add to it's SUV character.

What are the highlights on the outside?

Well, speaking of standout features, you will find plenty of them in the 2020 Acura MDX Sport hybrid. Here is the list of few of those features

  • Jewel Eye Headlights with Auto On/Off Function
  • 20" Alloy Wheels
  • Powered Moon Roof
  • Remote Linked Power Operated Tail Gate
  • Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers

2020 Acura MDX hybrid Competition

Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD VS Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 SE Hybrid

Land Rover is globally famed for its Luxurious offerings and the Range Rover Sport P360 SE Hybrid is no different. This Range Rover feels like one from both the outside and on the inside and pampers it's occupants with a sense of luxury and opulence. In terms of performance as well, it ain't no slouch and can be as fast as some of the hot sedans out there. However, all this comes at a steep price and the price difference is a big one. The Acura on the other hand, offers a lot more practicality, reliability and features at a much lower asking price. The Acura is for people who want a practical Crossover while the Land Rover is for those, who want some class and panache out of their daily driver.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 SE Hybrid
2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 SE Hybrid

Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD VS Lexus RX 450hL

The Lexus is the closest to the Acura in terms of dynamics, looks and design. There isn't much differentiation among the 2 in terms of pricing and performance and are identical there as well. However, while the Lexus seats only 5 people, the Acura boasts of seating for 7. The Lexus feels a tad more premium on the inside and is sure to turn heads with its looks. You can't go wrong while choosing one of these 2 SUV's but if you had a higher focus on practicality, the Acura would be the best choice for you then.

2020 Acura MDX hybrid Final Verdict

While the Auto industry is witnessing a slowdown in sales of vehicles, Crossovers and SUV's are showing no signs of slowdown. Acura has been at the forefront of this growth with it's SUV's and the MDX Hybrid continues that. The 2020 Acura MDX Hybrid, offers both performance and practicality, with the Legendary Japanese Reliability and superb resale values. Add to all this, a feature loaded cabin and a long list of driver assistance features and what you have on your hands is the perfect Hybrid Crossover that will make your daily commute to office fun and a great weekend family companion as well.
