One of the more popular Mid-Size SUVs in the market, the MDX from Acura is back for 2021. It continues to flaunt a fine balance of luxury and exploitable performance that is rare to come by in this segment and price point. 6 trims are to be made available for 2021 with a new Type S trim, making its way in the lineup. However, it still rides on the 3rd Generation platform that was introduced in 2014 and is also shared with the Honda Pilot.

Prices for the 2021 Acura MDX are expected to begin from $44,000 and are expected to go past the $60k mark, for the top trim. Mechanically, the 2021 MDX will remain unchanged and will still sport the 290hp producing 3.5L Naturally-Aspirated V6 motor that is addictive to drive about. It also gets numerous added technology and safety features for 2021. But can it help mask its aging design language and stand firm to the evolving competition? Read on to find out.

Acura is yet to reveal the entire spec sheet for the 2021 MDX Type S but there are rumors that the Type S trim will get a 3.5 liter, twin-turbo V6 engine. SUVs like the Cadillac XT5, Buick Enclave, and Jaguar F-pace already are pretty popular in this segment but 2021 MDX is being brought to the market to give these cars a tough time.

2021 Acura MDX SUV

Moreover, Acura has flexible backing from Honda which is known for its extremely reliable nature and practicality. Couple that to the luxury on offer in the 2021 MDX, the formula is stern and thus puts in a tough stand. In this review, we shall explore the 2021 MDX inside out, compare the trim-wise prices and features against its rivals, and see if it is any better than its predecessor.

It comes with a plethora of features at a reasonable price tag and offers all the things in the world that you would expect from a luxury family SUV. So, our pick here is the Standard trim level of the MDX with front-wheel drive.

2021 Acura MDX Ownership Costs, Reliability and Trims

Acura is Honda’s luxury division and thus Acura cars share a lot of technology with Honda cars. Honda has always had the reputation of building the most reliable cars and Acura is no different. Like most Japanese automakers, the MDX offers great value and service and is extremely reliable.

Reliability and Ownership costs

The Acura MDX by trusted reliability sources has been awarded a rating of 4.6 on a scale of 5 which is impressive and talks a lot about the reliability index of the car. The MDX is also rated very well by JD Power and gets a rating of 79 on a scale of 100. The car scores 78/100 in terms of resale. The 2021 Acura MDX gets an overall consumer verified score of 76/100 in the JD Power ratings.

Moreover, The MDX hasn’t had any recalls issued for its 2020 model year from the NHTSA which clearly tells about the quality and reliability standards of the car. That said, the 2021 MDX will roughly cost you around $44,500. Prices vary depending on the state but the difference isn’t much.

Price

Washington

$44,550

Florida

$44,500

New Jersey

$44,555

California

$45,055

Arizona

$44,850

In terms of ownership costs, the MDX will cost you nearly $5,116 for five years based on the estimate that the car will be driven for 15000 miles every year. The cost of ownership is very reasonable and pretty low compared to other cars in the segment.

2021 Acura MDX Warranty

The MDX is offered with a pretty basic warranty package and there’s nothing really outstanding about it. Some of the warranty specs of the MDX are listed below

  • 4 year/50000 mile limited vehicle warranty
  • 6 year/70000 mile limited powertrain warranty
  • No complimentary maintenance available
  • 5 year/ unlimited mile outer body rust-through warranty

In comparison, the Jaguar F-Pace gets a more robust safety net in the form of a better service package. Jaguar covers the SUV with up to five years or 60,000 miles of free complimentary maintenance.

Miles per dollar Costs for the 2021 Acura MDX

For every mile you’ll drive in your MDX, you’ll be roughly shelling out $5. Buyers often tend to ignore this aspect of the car while buying but it is extremely essential to know and understand how much money you’ll be spending for every mile that you’ll be driving.

Is buying a used Acura MDX a good idea?

There is a lot of previous-generation used MDXs out there in the market available for sale. While you can get an MDX from 2013-14 for as cheap as $8,000, there are a few well-maintained examples of fully-loaded MDXs from 2018-19 that have an asking price tag of around $38,000. A well-maintained used MDX can offer you great reliability, fuel economy, and practicality and we think that it will certainly be a good idea to buy a used MDX from 2018 or 2019.

2021 Acura MDX Engine and Performance

8.4/10

Pop the hood and you’ll find a chunky 3.5 liter, naturally aspirated V6 engine in the 2021 Acura MDX that puts out 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The power plant is mated to a 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and as standard, the power is sent to the front wheels (FWD) but you also pick the Acura’s Super Handling All-wheel Drive (AWD) system for extra money.

2021 Acura MDX SUV gets the same 3.5L Engine from 2020

The engine delivers power smoothly and in a linear fashion and feels super refined. The 9-speed gearbox is not the quickest around but is not a deal-breaker. However, the speculated Type S variant could feature the same motor with over 300 horses at your disposal. The secret lies in the fact - it'll be blessed with a couple of turbos (twin-turbocharged) to aid the case.

The Cadillac XT5 and the Buick Enclave use the same powertrain and hence both deliver the best power figures of the competition of 310 HP. On the other hand, the Jaguar F-Pace uses a small 2-liter engine and ends up making the lowest power figures in the competition of 248 HP.

2021 Acura MDX Acceleration and Braking performance

This is a family SUV and not a dragster. With that being said, the MDX happens to be the quickest SUV of the lot. 60 mph comes in about 6.5 seconds and the SUV covers the quarter-mile in just about 14.9 seconds. The acceleration figures are really impressive for a 7 passenger family SUV.

2021 Acura MDX SUV Accelerate 0-60 MPH in 6.5 sec

Not many people realize that a strong set of brakes come handy in avoiding any untoward incident and most buyers easily tend to ignore the braking performance of a car. The Acura MDX gets 12.6 inches diameter discs at the front and 13-inch diameter discs at the rear. The SUV comes to a complete halt at a distance of 116 feet from 60 MPH which is pretty decent for a 4000 lbs. vehicle.

Also, the Cadillac XT5 gets the largest set of brakes and hence achieves the lowest stopping distance in the competition of 111 feet.

2021 Acura MDX Fuel Economy

7.1/10

MDX delivers big when it comes to all-round efficiency. In the city, the car goes for about 20 miles on a gallon of fuel while on the highway it returns 27 miles to the gallon. It gets a combined EPA rating of 23 mpg which is pretty impressive for an SUV of this size and shape.

One can also opt for an Acura MDX with a Hybrid engine if efficiency stands high on your priority list. Acura sure knows to keep everyone happy. The 19.5-gallon fuel tank returns a satisfactory driving range of 429 miles which helps it stay clear of the last spot in the segment.

The Jaguar F-Pace has the best fuel economy figures thanks to its all-aluminum construction which keeps the weight in check and offers a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg. The XT5 and the Enclave on the other hand have the lowest fuel economy numbers.

2021 Acura MDX Interior

7.8/10

The 2021 MDX is beautifully crafted on the inside and the materials used feel simply premium. The dashboard and the center console is nicely laid out and you have natural wood and leather trim all around. Leather seats come as standard and so does the heating feature on the front seats. The front seats also can be power adjusted in 12 different ways.

2021 Acura MDX SUV Front Seating

The amount of head, shoulder, and legroom is great on both the rows of seats and even tall passengers shall comfortably accommodate themselves in. The third row of seats is one of the better ones and offers room for small adults. With that said, there’s not much room for your cargo. The MDX offers just 15 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the 3rd row of seats which is a bit scant for carrying luggage of seven passengers.

2021 Acura MDX Exterior

8.0/10

The MDX is a handsome-looking brute. It has the giant signature Acura chrome-clad diamond pentagon grille at the front and is accompanied by those Jewel LED headlights. The front facia has enough drama to attract attention and turn heads as it drives past.

2021 Acura MDX SUV  Third Quarter View

Dimensions of the MDX are proportionately laid out and that gives a big, boxy and rugged SUV stance. Further, the car gets a ground clearance of 7.3 inches which is good enough to take for some light weekend off-roading. All of these changes are subtle and have most of its design cues shared with the 2020 MDX.

2021 Acura MDX Safety

9.8/10

Acura does care about the safety of its passengers and hence it has equipped the MDX with plenty of safety features as standard. The MDX gets 5 stars and a ‘Good’ rating in almost all the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS and that speaks a lot about the safety quotient of the car.

Dynamic guidelines for the rearview camera

For 2021, Acura has also laden the MDX with more standard safety as well as assistance features. Many of the previously optional features have made way into the standard listing and thus has improved safety. The Acura also gets a good number of safety features and some of them are listed below:

  • Driver, Passenger, Front and Rear Head, Front Side Airbags
  • 360 degree surround view camera
  • Automatic emergency collision mitigation braking
  • Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow
  • Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning

2021 Acura MDX Competition

8.0/10

2021 Acura MDX vs Cadillac XT5

The Cadillac is the American rival of the MDX. The Cadillac can only accommodate 5 passengers while the MDX can haul 7. But on the other hand, the Cadillac XT5 offers a better cargo area and more passenger space.

2021 Cadillac XT5

The XT5’s V6 puts out slightly more power but in the real world, the MDX feels more athletic. The MDX is also cheaper by almost about $6000. Clearly, the Acura makes sense over the Cadillac, and with the kind of features that it has got on board, the MDX is the winner of this competition.

2021 Acura MDX vs Buick Enclave

The Buick Enclave shares platform with Cadillac and has the same powertrain. However, the 2021 MDX offers the better snob value credit to the Acura badge as opposed to Buick. The Buick Enclave on the other hand offers more passenger room and trunk volume and at the same time is cheaper than Acura.

2021 Buick Enclave

If you want a functional SUV and don’t really care about luxury, then the Buick makes more sense than the Acura but otherwise, a few dollars extra and the Acura offers more features and value to offer.

2021 Acura MDX vs Jaguar F-Pace

The Jaguar F-Pace grabs more attention than the Acura, hands down. It looks like a sports car transformed into an SUV and offers some of the best driving dynamics in the segment. But the Jag F-Pace can accommodate only 5 passengers and is down on power when compared to the 2021 Acura MDX.

2021 Jaguar F-Pace

On the flip side, the F-Pace has better fuel economy figures. The comparison here is a little bit tight but the Acura gets a slight upper hand since it can accommodate 7 passengers and has a large number of tech features on board.

2021 Acura MDX Final Verdict

7.3/10
