Expert Review

Overall Rating

Acura is yet to reveal the entire spec-sheet for the 2021 MDX Type S but there are rumors that the Type S trim will get a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine making 355 hp. SUVs like the Cadillac XT5, Buick Enclave, and Jaguar F-Pace already are pretty popular in this segment, but the 2021 MDX is being brought to the market to give these cars a tough time.

2021 Acura MDX will arrive at dealers in early 2021!

Moreover, Acura has flexible backing from Honda which is known for its extremely reliable nature and practicality. Couple that to the luxury on offer in the 2021 MDX, the formula is stern, and thus, puts in a tough stand. In this review, we shall explore the 2021 MDX inside-out, compare the trim-wise prices and features against its rivals, and see if it is any better than its predecessor.

2021 Acura MDX Features

The completely redesigned 2021 MDX goes for sale in early 2021, with the radical new exterior design, a new interior that is rich in quality, features, and technologies along with performance-oriented specs like MDX's first-ever double-wishbone front suspension. This fourth-generation Acura MDX is available in 6 trim levels including the new Type S model. Acura hasn't released the pricing of the 2021 MDX's trim levels, but getting a minor bump in the prices over the 2020 model is almost certain. The 2021 MDX is available with two powertrains- a standard 290 hp 3.5L V6 and 355 hp turbocharged V6 with Type S. The outgoing 2020 MDX's hybrid powertrain is not released officially yet, will it be a carryover model or a revamp? Only Acura knows.

2021 Acura MDX comes loaded with premium features and modern technology!

The 2021 update of MDX is the most intriguing in the lineup's history. Some highlights include Acura’s all-digital Precision Cockpit, the latest generation of Acura’s intuitive True Touchpad Interface running on a 12.3-inch center display, “Signature Edition” ELS STUDIO 3D premium audio system with 25 speakers. The 2021 Acura MDX has also enhanced safety technologies, most of which were first seen on the new 2021 TLX. The expanded suite of AcuraWatch safety and driver-assistive technologies include enhanced Road Departure Mitigation, new Traffic Jam Assist, and new Low-Speed Braking Control.

As for the 2021 Acura MDX's price, the Standard trim with a front-wheel-drive configuration starts at $46,000, and prices climbing all the way up to $66,000 for the top-of-the-line Type S, much like the 2021 Acura TLX Type S.

The Standard trim's prices start around  $46,000 for which you get features like Jewel Eye LED headlights, heated leather seats with 12-way power adjustability, tri-zone automatic climate control, 8 speaker Acura audio system, leather interior trim, dual exhaust outlets, and the list goes on. It gets front-wheel drive as standard but you can always pay extra and avail Acura Super Handling-AWD system.

The Technology Package trim will start above $51,000 for the base 290 hp 3.5L V6 and FWD configuration. This trim builds upon the Standard trim and gets additional features like a 10-speaker premium ELS audio system, navigation system with a 3D view, natural wood trim, LED puddle lights, and much more.

2021 Acura MDX SUV's prices start at over $46,000

The next trim in line is the A-Spec Package and is only available as an all-wheel-drive only. This trim gets features like sport A-Spec seats with perforated Milano premium leather and Alcantara-trimmed interior, heated and ventilated front seats, A-Spec exclusive dual exhaust outlets.

The Advance Package again comes standard with front-wheel drive and is priced at $56,250. Features offered with this trim include 2nd-row sunshades, heated steering wheel, surround-view camera, head-up warning, and 2nd-row captain’s chairs among others.

The Entertainment Package trim further adds either a 9-inch LCD overhead rear entertainment console with Technology Package or a 16.2-inch extra-wide LCD overhead rear entertainment console with the Advance Package, depending upon what you choose. Prices for the Entertainment Package start at around $53,500. The Type S trim level is speculated to come with a 3.0 liter, turbo V6 engine that will make 355 horses, and get all the features that the Advance Package gets. Acura hasn’t yet declared the prices and the complete feature list of the Type S trim level.

Moreover, the MDX hasn’t had any recalls issued for its 2020 model year from the NHTSA which clearly tells about the quality and reliability standards of the car. That said, the current MDX will roughly cost you around $44,500. Prices may vary depending on the state but the difference isn’t much. Prices of the MDX in some states has been shown below:

Acura MDX

Cadillac XT5 Buick Enclave Jaguar F-Pace

$45,355 $34,780 $44,449

$45,090 $39,485 $49,335

$35,370 $38,252 $52,270

In terms of ownership costs, the Acura MDX will cost you nearly $5,116 for five years based on the estimate that the car will be driven for 15000 miles every year. The cost of ownership is very reasonable and pretty low compared to other cars in the segment.

What is the warranty coverage with the 2021 Acura MDX?

The MDX is offered with a pretty basic warranty package and there’s nothing really outstanding about it. Some of the warranty specs of the MDX are listed below.

Limited Warranty

4 Year/50,000 Mile; whichever is earlier

Powertrain Warranty

6 Year/70,000 MIle; whichever is earlier

Outer Body Rust-Through Warranty

5 Year/Unlimited Mile

In comparison, the Jaguar F-Pace gets a more robust safety net in the form of a better service package. Jaguar covers the SUV with up to five years or 60,000 miles of free complimentary maintenance.

What are the Miles Per Dollar costs of the Acura MDX?

For every mile you’ll drive in your MDX, you’ll be roughly shelling out $5. Buyers often tend to ignore this aspect of the car while buying but it is extremely essential to know and understand how much money you’ll be spending for every mile that you’ll be driving.

2021 Acura MDX Buying Advice

If you’re in the market looking for a functional and practical luxury family SUV, then the Standard trim of the MDX should be good enough. It comes with a plethora of features at a reasonable price tag and offers all the things in the world that you would expect from a luxury family SUV. So, our pick here is the Standard trim level of the MDX with front-wheel drive.

Is buying a used Acura MDX a good idea?

There are a lot of previous-generation used MDXs out there in the market available for sale. While you can get an MDX from 2013-14 for as cheap as $8,000, there are a few well-maintained examples of fully-loaded MDXs from 2018-19 that have an asking price tag of around $38,000. A well-maintained used MDX can offer you great reliability, fuel economy, and practicality, and we think that it will certainly be a good idea to buy a used MDX from 2018 or 2019.

2021 Acura MDX Engine and Performance

Pop the hood and you’ll find a chunky 3.5 liter, naturally aspirated V6 engine in the outgoing Acura MDX that puts out 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The power plant is mated to a 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, and as standard, the power is sent to the front wheels (FWD) but you also pick the Acura’s Super Handling-All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system for extra money.

2021 Acura MDX's V6 or turbo V6 comes paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission!

The engine delivers power smoothly and in a linear fashion and feels super refined. The 9-speed gearbox is not the quickest around but is not a deal-breaker. However, as the 2021 MDX will be based on the same platform as that TLX, it could come with the same 272 hp 2.0-liter turbo-four. Accordingly, the transmission could also be swapped with a 10-speed automatic unit.

The MDX Hybrid could continue unchanged, for all we know. The Cadillac XT5 and the Buick Enclave use the same powertrain, and hence, both deliver the best power figures of the competition. On the other hand, the Jaguar F-Pace uses a small 2-liter engine and ends up making the lowest power figures in the competition at 247 horses.

How impressive will the Acceleration and Braking Performance of the 2021 Acura MDX be?

This is a family SUV and not a dragster. With that being said, the MDX happens to be the quickest SUV of the lot. Its 0-60 MPH sprint comes in about 6.5 seconds and the SUV covers the quarter-mile in just about 14.6 seconds. The acceleration figures are really impressive for a 7-passenger family SUV. That, however, could remain unchanged even with the new turbocharged four-banger.

More Performance focussed than before- improved 0-60 mph time!

Not many people realize that a strong set of brakes come in handy in avoiding any untoward incident, and most buyers easily tend to ignore the braking performance of a car. The Acura MDX gets 12.6 inches discs at the front and 13.0-inch discs at the rear. The SUV comes to a complete halt within a distance of 116 feet when stopping from 60 MPH, which is pretty decent for an over 4000 pounds vehicle.

The Cadillac XT5 and the Buick Enclave have the best power figures but they somehow end being the slowest cars off the chart. The Jaguar F-Pace takes just 6.6 seconds to complete the acceleration run in spite of using a small engine and making low power. But the Cadillac XT5 gets the largest set of brakes, and hence, has the lowest stopping distance in the competition of 111 feet.

How much will the 2021 Acura MDX be able to Tow?

With a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs, Acura has ensured that you won't have much trouble ferrying around heavy stuff with your MDX SUV. Its engine doesn't feel stressed while towing, and the Super Handling-AWD setup makes up for required traction when having a trailer hitched at the back.

Only the Jaguar F-Pace can surpass the MDX with a maximum towing capacity of 5,291 pounds. This despite its least powerful engine of the lot, just like the XT5, which despite having the most powerful engine is not the least capable. The Enclave can tow just as much as the MDX, but even it has a more powerful engine.

How well balanced will the Ride and Handling of the 2021 Acura MDX be?

Handling is something that the Acura vehicles are known to be great at. Accordingly, the MDX's steering wheel is quite responsive and offers a very firm grip. It responds even to the minutest shift in driver’s input. Its accurately machined and tested steering rack helps to add to the dynamics, thereby, enhancing its character.

2021 MDX’s first-ever double-wishbone front suspension engineered for Type S-levels of performance!

Now, the 2021 Acura MDX will share the same platform as the 2021 TLX. Judging by that, it can be made out that the SUV will further transform as having the driving dynamics of a powerful sedan coupled with the practicality and luxury of a premium SUV. If you want to power through your journeys in comfort, the MDX definitely checks the right boxes.

2021 Acura MDX Fuel Economy

MDX delivers big when it comes to all-round efficiency. In the city, the car goes for about 20 miles on a gallon of fuel, while on the highway it returns 27 miles to the gallon. The 2021 MDX gets a combined EPA rating of 23 MPG, which is pretty impressive for an SUV of this size and performance.

2021 Acura MDX's new digital instrument cluster features different driving modes!

Sure efficiency is affected with the SH-AWD setup but not a by a lot. One can also opt for an Acura MDX with a Hybrid engine if efficiency stands high on your priority list. Acura sure knows to keep everyone happy. The 19.5-gallon fuel tank returns a satisfactory driving range of 429 miles which helps it stay clear of the last spot in the segment.

With the smaller 2.0L engine, chances are this three-row SUV might just turn up to be even more economical. The Jaguar F-Pace has the best fuel economy figures, thanks to its all-aluminum construction which keeps the weight in check. The XT5 and the Enclave, on the other hand, deliver the lowest fuel economy numbers despite having fuel tanks of size the same as the F-Pace.

The MDX is beautifully crafted on the inside and the materials used feel simply premium. The dashboard and the center console is nicely laid out and you have natural wood and leather trim all around. Leather seats come as standard and so does the heating feature on the front seats. The front seats also can be power adjusted in 12 different ways.

2021 MDX's redesigned dashboard borrows cues from the 2021 ILX!

The amount of head, shoulder, and legroom is great on both the rows of seats and even tall passengers shall comfortably accommodate themselves in. The third row of seats is one of the better ones and offers room for small adults. With that said, there’s not much room for your cargo. The MDX offers just 15 cubic-feet of cargo volume behind the 3rd row of seats, which is a bit scant for carrying luggage of seven passengers.

How’s the 2021 Acura MDX’s infotainment system?

The standard infotainment system offered with the current MDX makes do with an 8 speaker audio system combined with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Features like Siri Eyes Free, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, Pandora compatibility, and a CD player all come as standard. Acura offers a premium ELS audio system as an option and we totally recommend you to get that as it takes the in-car audio experience to the very next level.

Acura’s intuitive and driver-focused True Touchpad Interface, featuring an ultra-wide, 12.3-inch, full-HD center display

The dedicated Entertainment package trim comes with a 16.2-inch widescreen overhead console for the rear passengers. The MDX is a handsome-looking brute. It has the giant signature Acura chrome-clad diamond pentagon grille at the front and is accompanied by those Jewel LED headlights. The front facia has enough drama to attract attention and turn heads as it drives past.

2021 Acura MDX SUV comes from a line of performance vehicles

Dimensions of the 2021 Acura MDX are proportionately laid out. That gives it a big, boxy, and rugged SUV stance. Further, the car gets a ground clearance of 7.3 inches which is good enough to take for some light weekend off-roading. Now, from the spy shots of the 2021 MDX, it could be made out that the new model will look a lot similar to the 2021 TLX. But we know only so much as of now.

2021 Acura MDX Safety

Acura does care about the safety of its passengers, and hence, equips the MDX with plenty of safety features as standard. The MDX gets full 5 stars and a ‘Good’ overall rating in almost all the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS, and that speaks a lot about the safety quotient of the car.

2021 MDX's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure enhance safety!

For 2021, Acura has also laden the MDX with more standard safety as well as assistance features. Many of the previously optional features have made way into the standard listing, and thus, have improved safety further. The Acura's safety features are listed below:

The XT5 is the American rival of the MDX. This Cadillac can only accommodate 5 passengers, while the MDX can haul 7. But on the other hand, the Cadillac XT5 offers a better cargo area and more passenger space.

The XT5’s V6 puts out slightly more power but in the real world, the MDX feels more athletic. The MDX is also cheaper by almost about $6000. Clearly, the Acura makes sense over the Cadillac, and with the kind of features that it has got on board, the MDX is the winner of this competition.

2021 Acura MDX vs Buick Enclave

The Buick Enclave shares platform with Cadillac and has the same powertrain. However, the 2021 MDX offers the better snob value credit to the Acura badge as opposed to Buick. The 2021 Buick Enclave, on the other hand, offers more passenger room and trunk volume, and at the same time is cheaper than the MDX.

If you want a functional SUV and don’t really care about luxury, then the Buick makes more sense than the Acura. But otherwise, for a few extra dollars, the MDX offers more features and a lot more value in all considerable aspects.

2021 Acura MDX vs Jaguar F-Pace

The Jaguar F-Pace grabs more attention than the Acura, hands down. It looks like a sports car transformed into an SUV and offers some of the best driving dynamics in the segment. But the Jag F-Pace can accommodate only 5 passengers and is down on power when compared to the 2021 Acura MDX.

On the flip side, the 2021 F-Pace has better fuel economy figures. The comparison here is a little bit tight but the Acura gets a slight upper hand since it can accommodate 7 passengers and offers a larger number of tech features onboard at a significantly lower price.

2021 Acura MDX Final Verdict

The Acura MDX performs really well on almost all the fronts and there’s nothing one can complain about. It hauls 7 passengers, has a powerful engine, is luxurious, and has got tonnes of features and options on offer.

The Acura lineup for 2021 has a lot to look forward to

The 2021 Acura MDX offers much more than what you would expect from a car in this segment and indeed is a great proposition. If you happen to be in the market hunting for a midsize, luxury family SUV, then you should highly consider buying the MDX as it offers very good value for your money.
